I want to give my Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) to my youngest son as a wifi only gaming device. I don't want him to have browser or direct Internet access. I basically want restricted user mode like there is on the tablet versions of Android. I have been trying for 2 days to find a way to make that happen. I have multi user setup but the second profile never loads. Has anyone else done this and had success? I am running Cyanogen 11 but I just want anything that will work this way. I have tried Parental control apps but none of them work as well as the restricted profile on tablets either. I don't care what rom I need to run to make this work.
Vanir rom has multi user support like tablets. Should work

i noticed that this was very very silent news as i assume rogers doesnt want people to use this, since it basically allows free unlimited calling:

however, i am unable to download it as i dont have a tablet. i've actually tried using a device spoofer to make my galaxy S be recognized as a nexus 7 but still doesnt let me download.
does anyone know if non-tablet can install tablet apks?
regardless, perhaps this opens up more of how one can develop a non-tablet version.
I created a backup apk (https://www.dropbox.com/s/i0x1q4d5yj1toyv/One Number_1.2.1.apk) and tried installing it on my phone but it FCs after the splash screen... not sure if someone can try seeing what's happening?

thanks! i was able to install it but yes crashes also after splash. i assume it needs at least a minimum resolution.
also tested on galaxy note (tablet resolution), no dice, also crashes.
The app works great on the transformer Prime. Use it all the time. Would be awesome to get it working on the s3.

When I connect my vpn, wi-fi changes to limited and probably because of that, some macro apps say I am not connected (like hulu or abc for example) but netflix works and also I can download apps from the store.
Does anyone know how to solve this limitation ?

Might be a split tunneling issue...
Do you lose access to web/WAN based resources from a x86 based laptop too when using the same vpn profile?
If so you might need to speak to whoever set the vpn up on the firewall device.
The same problem is in the "full" version of Windows 8.
Until MS will present patch for this (Windows Update) there is no solution to the problem.
Hopefully we will not have to wait long for it...
For now all I can advise is patience

Be happy that everything works in desktop mode - it would be truly tragic if in desktop mode Chrome would have the same problem.
I am wondering if they will do something about about browser abilities.
For example HBO Go - it needs Silverlight to work. This means that the only way to watch anything is to run browser in desktop mode.
Since so many stuff is not working in Moder UI, apps in most cases are quite useless - I have to admit that Netflix app is AWESOME! - what was the point for Modern UI in first place?
If Ms truly wants to make it work (like it did with Windows itself in the past) it needs to open Modern UI - just set very clear requirements for developers in order to avoid fragmentation in future.
I'm looking to possibly get a Galaxy Note 8.0 down the road for a custom dash install for my car. I was wondering if there was a possibility to get the Xposed Multiwindow Mod from the Galaxy Note II to work on this device.

It works fine. Please do not comment if you are unsure of things, because you can start a huge row for developers.
I am running it right now on my tablet, and it runs great.
It works perfectly for me!

Really? Can you run Spotify and navigation side by side?
I was able to get it working also.
Folks should be aware that it is very difficult to use the CWR tools to get rid of it again at this time, though you can do it manually via ADB.
Also that Odin recovery does not wipe out installed apps, which I did not know and am happy about. (I tried changing dpi using a different one of the Xposed modules; it did not work and my phone bootlooped. I had the uninstall around, but was not able to install it via CWR.)
The multiwindow one works nicely. There's also an app in the play store that works for enabling multiwindow view for many more apps.
I don't use Spotify so I don't know about that one in particular.
Out of curiosity what is the diff with this and multi window mgr. Be gentle i am using mwm but int in the diff.

I don't know, MWM just didn't Work for me.

It's very similar to multiwindow manager, honestly. MWM is a little funky in that the app itself doesn't know that the Note 8 exists yet. I think I told it I was using a note II and it let me add whatever I wanted to multiwindow mode.
The one thing I have not tested yet with the new way of adding multiwindow functionality to the device is the camera. With MWM running, if multiwindow mode is enabled the camera locks up the device.

I haven't tried the camera yet while using it but I don't take many pix with a tablet. For MWM to work you have to disable the patch it mentions when you launch it first. Other than that it works with all my apps. I also love multi touch gestures app.Update just used the camera with no issues. First time I tried it. Pretty good image for a tablet.
I'm using the Xposed method and while the camera doesn't fc there is apparently no shutter button. In fact I'm typing this from one window with the camera in the other.

And I have to admit that this is far from my go-to camera - but occasionally I'll launch the app accidentally or on purpose, and it'd be nice to not have it hink out on me.
The fix for me has been to disable multiwindow mode in the system preference, and that may well work for the Xposed mwindow modification as well.
Xposed is a framework with developer interest from the companion Samsung devices and it may allow for other things to arrive fairly quickly on the device, before a full rom is ready.
This is awesome; I'm definitely going to be getting one of these for my dash install later this year
For any office jockey types like myself that use a desk dock, I highly recommend checking this app out --> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.droidcontrol.takecontrol&hl=en
Developer Website -->http://droidcontrol.com/
In essence, your Note 2 just becomes another screen that you can slide your cursor over to and interact with the phone.
I'm in no way affiliated with the app or developer but I posted here because the developer seems to have abandoned the project and I'm hoping for some suggestions/alternatives from XDA.
I was using RootBox on my Note 2 and both the app and ROM worked beautifully... used it over the course of a week and fell in love with both of them.
Long story short, I badly needed (two-way) call recording which I simply couldn't get working on RootBox despite trying Xposed framework, system files, apps etc. so I reverted to Alliance 4.1.2 which is a compromise relative to RootBox BUT call recording is crystal clear...
So what's the problem?
TakeControl no longer works nicely on the TW ROM (only works in the upper 720px region as per the image below) and the developer doesn't seem to be responding... :crying:
And what am I asking?
1. Can anyone suggest a reason why this might be the case and if there's a workaround?:fingers-crossed:2. If not, does anyone know of a similar app that works? And I'm not talking something like SnapPea and variants

For remote controlling my phone, I use teamviewer. Samsung has a partnership with TeamViewer to allow you to remote any Samsung phone using either your own phone or the pc version on TeamViewer.
Install this on your phone - TeamViewer QS
and install the PC piece - TeamViewer PC
It works pretty good to controlling your own phone and if your parents need remote help with theirs.

Hey everyone I just bought my 8.0 tab woohoo!! I'm just wondering if it's really worth it to root the tablet? What (is)are the best benift(s) for the tablet?
Sent from my GT-N5110 using xda app-developers app
There are many different reasons as to why people like to root. Here are a few examples:
1) Some want total control of their Android Device whether it be a phone or table.
2) Some want certain apps that will only work with Root Permissions.
3) Some want to install a ROM for either its features, customization, or just cause it looks cool.
4) Some want to flash multiple ROMs cause they just like messing with their device. These people are also known as "Flashaholics". Terrible sickness to get...
Those are the main ones I can think of, i'm sure there are more reasons, but these are mainly my reasons.
As for if it's worth it? That's up to the user. I will forever Root any Android Device I acquire. Some devices I will add a Custom ROM or some I will just leave Stock Rooted. Example, I put Custom ROMs on my SGH-i777 (SGS2), but I leave my Note 8.0 Stock Rooted. I don't want to lose all the features of the S-Pen, I specifically bought this tablet for that reason.
Now if it was any other tablet that didn't have great stock features, I probably would've put a Custom ROM, or just bought a Nexus 7.
Worth it? Maybe. But what do you have to lose? You can root and not utilize the extra functionality, and still receive OTA updates.
I rooted because there is a plethora of functionality in apps and programs I can use and I don't have to swallow verizon updates that they force on my phone due to my roms I installed. Great benefits by rooting. It's your phone, root it when you need it! Lol

If you do decide to root, i highly recomend multi window manager its on the playstore and allows you to add ANY apps you like to multiwindow you can play a game and watch a movie at the same time, or have ebay open while on whatsapp it lets you choose what to put in the note 8s multiwindow and works very well.
Enjoy
