[Q] Custom ROM & samsung apps etc help - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hi all,
I've just bought a note 2014 edition, upgrade from the Note 10.1.
I am not going to make the same mistake and leave my new tablet as stock (my note 10.1 is laggy as hell - yet its supposed to be a quad core super fast tablet with 2GB ram!). So to that end I'm going to put a custom rom on it (not my first time doing this - simple linux/windows commands I'm very comfortable with).
So my questions are:
1 - Can i install samsung apps (like samsung hub, learning etc) on the custom rom and have my tablet recognised as a samsung device so I receive updates for these apps? (I don't get these from google play store).
2 - Which is the most stable rom you guys have tried and recommend?
3 - Will the multi window still work (I want to be able to use it for all apps)
4 - How will the new rom behave with the S-Pen? It is still detected once it is removed and popup appears?
5 - I really want to ensure I keep the s-note app so would deffo want that to be kept up to date
Thanks in advance folks!

It even has 3gb of Ram!
After I bought the Note last november, I was irritated to find out that there wasn't yet a single custom rom for this relatively popular gadget. A situation which hasn't changed in the meantime. And in a couple of months the device will be EOL and the user base will start to shrink, probably faster, if there's still not a single custom rom then.

[Q] Improve the Tab Pro like the Tab S?

I have a Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 SM-T520.
i just tried the new Tab S 10.5 and it is way smoother than the Tab Pro 10.1, has anyone else noticed this?
Now because these devices are pretty much identical except for the extra 1gb of RAM in the Tab S, so if I increase the RAM in my Tab Pro using Roehsoft Ram Expander could I expect my Tab Pro 10.1 will become smoother?
Also would I be able to flash the Tab S ROM on my Tab Pro? would it work without any problems? In case it has more optimized software?
Kind feel gipped that both devices are essentially the same yet the Tab S is miles smoother.
Thanks Guys
Both Tab S and Tab Pro have 3gb ram don't they.
I have the 12.2 Tab Pro and that says it as 3gb ram
Only the 12.2.

10.1 has 2 GB.
Sent telepathically to my SM-T520
bought the 10.1 at BB on release day and have been there several times lately looking at the S and besides tthe screen size and improved screen (this doesnt mean that much to me) i am very pleased with the 10.1 and they seem to behave the same with all my looking.
i dont think having their rom would change anything and honeslty my 10.1 isnt laggy and has replaced my laptop for everything but for work.
i am certain that we will see some kind of S Pro or something hit later this year when the holidays hit and i will jump then.
i turned on Developer Options and set animations to 0 as i always do on everything and mine runs smooth.
Sammy has just this week firgured out how to actually get 6 of the 8 cores working together at once and we havent seen that update and probabaly wont for some time and that will make a huge difference.
also if like me you are on the web a lot with all that white background you will get better battery life on 10.1 but if your a video person with all the black background time you gain with the S.
I think all new android devices run the smoothest when they are new. As you download apps u can't help but have stuff running in the background. Android devices tend to slow down the longer you have them based on my experience.
I imagine demo mode is probably meant to run as fast as possible so that buyers aren't turned off by lag etc. If you have lag on your pro it has to have something to do with an app pulling too much ram. However, that extra 1gb of ram probably makes a difference. I know it did with my note 3 vs every other Samsung device I've owned. My pro 8.4 doesn't lag but it doesn't feel as fast as my note 2014 did while I had it. Software optimization has never been Samsung's strong suit.

To be honest the best thing you can do to fight lag on the tab pro is dump the horrible Magazine UX launcher. Samsung really sucks as a software company and it really shows with Magazine UX. Google OTOH makes some of the best software and it shows with the Google Now Launcher.
BTW I tried really hard to force myself to use magazine ux for 6 weeks after I got my tab pro. What a waste of time. I was wondering why my battery always ran down fast, and the app drawer was laggy etc. But it turned out it was the god-awful Touchwiz/Magazine UX bullsht the whole time. Switched to GNL and it was like i had a new tablet (again!)
Seriously if anyone is complaining about lag and is still using Touchwiz, I'd say that the solution is right in front of their nose, lol
What should I do if I want to switch to GNL..just install it from play store ?
Do I have to uninstall the Touchwiz as well ?
Can I go back to Touchwiz if don't like the GNL at a later time ?
Thanks

no, u can only install it from the play store if you have a Nexus device. for Galaxy Tab devices, you need to sideload the apk.
see here:
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...-drive-google-now-launcher-and-play-services/
No need to uninstall Touchwiz. it stays on your device, but it won't be always running if you switch to GNL.
of course you can switch back later if you want. btw if u decide to switch to GNL, i suggest removing all icons/widgets from your Touchwiz home screens and re-adding them to your GNL home screens.
Thanks and will try soon..
I can only speak of the Tab Pro 8.4. But it was laggy on TouchWiz, and going to a CM based ROM made it much smoother. Honestly, I don't see any of the TouchWiz features (with exception of MultiWindow) to be of any added value; and I'm hardly missing TouchWiz one bit (again, MW is all I miss).

personally i use All Share, Hancom Widget, WatchON, love Samsung Calendar, SideSync, love the Email, and a few others i am sure i am forgetting. i use to despise TW and all layovers but TW has grown on me. like my Note 3 i will take the custom TW based Roms and use Root and Xposed to customize it the way i like versus trying to force back CM like Roms to give me the TW features back i like which never works right when going that direction.

Yup, I completely recognize its a matter of personal taste, how you use your device, etc. I kinda had a love/hate relationship with WatchON. The rest, I either didn't have much use for, or didn't like them. I actually stayed stock on my Note 8 for the year I used it (broke the screen), but I am the opposite of you on the Tab Pro (how TouchWiz grew on you), I was fine with TouchWiz before and for whatever reason now I can't stand it. I was using CleanROM for a couple months. But now I'm on Codename Lungo (CM based) and can't imagine going back to a TouchWiz ROM.

Any cyanogen+snote apps?

Hi everyone, even if I'm here since few years, I never had to ask for anything, always found what I needed by the magical search button. Now the time has come to ask xD
I've got an "old" N7100, and I've found many Sammy roms with s5/n3 features, which is nice. I'm actually using the DN3 rom, but I've been wondering if there's any CM based rom with the snote features (such as the snote, air command, scrapbook and all that stuff).
I'm asking for a simple reason, when I first rooted my device, I had android kit kat 4.4.2, once I removed most of the junk (music/readers/video/game hub, Samsung apps, flipboard and all those preinstalled useless applications) my system was very smooth, running with less than 30 system applications. Now I've tried many roms, some didn't even work, but all the others (like the DN3) have like an hundred system apps and run with almost the double amount of ram. That translated to an heavy battery drain, even for a 3100mah battery.
On the other side, I've tried a couple CM based roms, needless to say the size of the rom itself (about 250mb vs 1.2gb) was smaller and the run at less than 650mb of ram, but with the huge loss of all snote features and the sad futility of our spen.
Now, I know we have about 2gb of ram and all, but I'm the kind of guy who wants both features and battery life, not to mention a smooth system.
How come no one has ever tried to merge a CM with all our beloved snote apps? Is that even possible?
If it's not, why can't anyone make a simple rom without 7850 features when we need like a dozen (at best), just improving our stock Note 2 with, let's say, Note 3 snote features and maybe other optimization (super battery save mode and other useful things)?
And also, why are we stuck at 4.4.2 when I managed to find 4.4.4 for an entry level Ace 2 (GT-I8160)? Is there any hardware limit I'm unaware of?
Would you suggest me any lightweight rom close enough to my description?
Thanks to anyone who took the time to listen, many thanks to the few who will answer (I hope someone will) and my apologies for the long post and the bad English (I'm Italian, that's my best english).

[Q] Best custom ROM for Samsung N7000 (Note 1)

Hi all,
not sure this is the best place for the following question, please refer me to a more appropriate one in case.
Having realised that Samsung has no intention to release Android upgrades for my N7000 (shame on them, this is still a great device, which I paid a lot no longer than 2 years ago), I've decided to migrate to a custom ROM. CyanoGenMod seemed the obvious choice, especially because everybody mentions it on Internet and the flashing procedure is so easy.
However, I'm seeing that they've just put a sort of generic Android on it, they didn't consider the specific device features at all. For instance, the original Samsung Android had an app to connect their app store and they have very good apps thre (eg, S Organiser, S Memo), now I understand I cannot even reinstall these apps manually, because they're based on a specific framework. Poor support for the stylus pen is another thing I miss (it was so easy to take a screenshoot by just touching the screen with the pen tip).
So, my question is, is there another custom ROM that is best for this kind of phone? I'm rather expert on IT, however I'd like something relatively easy to install, stable enough and with a significan user base (makes stability more likely an troubleshooting easier).
Thanks in advance for any help.

[Q] [Question][ROM] Fastest / Efficient Rom 4.4 -5.0 for GT N5100

Hey everyone!
Since I have the Galaxy S5, I am not using my Note 8.0 as full media device anymore.
Mainly for reading and taking notes and that's the point.
Currently I've got the CivZ_FlexNote8.0-KK with Android 4.4.2 and the CivZ SphereKat Rev4.0 Kernel.
It's working, that's is not the problem - but I want a really slim, fast and efficient ROM.
So, what is the most efficient ROM right now?
SlimKat?
Thanks for every answer!
To be honest, stock does a great job. I trim down Google services and freeze what I don't need. Been there with modded ROMs, and find more trouble than what they are worth. Rather mod my stock ROM and be happy everything I want works smoothly as long as Google does not mess with updates.
This Note 8.0 will be the last Android device I'll get... Sticking with Linux, Apple, or Windows devices. never in my life have I had such an issue with an OS, if you can call Android an OS.

Note II AT&T Rom choice - Advice

Hello all,
I may get teased a little bit for this one - but I am a bit of a traditionalist. Even as an IT guy, I tend to shy away from custom, enhanced or otherwise modified ISOs of windows. Not because I am afraid of them... I just like the "stock" look. I would like to stick to the same thing on my phone.
I am still running the stock version of my ATT firmware, 4.x.x. I like it just fine, and it suits my needs for the most part - (Other than the ATT bloatware that crashes constantly for several minutes upon reboot)
However, my device is beginning to slow down and I find myself using Chrome more and more because the older stock browser does not seem to want to render some sites very well. I expect it is only a matter of time before I start running into "sorry, you cannot run this app" type of issues.
So on to my questions....
1. Will upgrading to 6.x or 7.x improve the performance on my device?
2. If so, I see there are a ton of apps to choose from. Is there one specifically that is "less modified" or at least enables some sort of "gotta-have-it" functionality?
3. Can you elaborate on why you chose to move from the stock rom? I understand there are alot of "testers" on this forum who like to play with things. However, my phone is used heavily for work purposes. Simplicity and Stability remain key drivers for me.
Changing to a custom ROM may improve some areas of performance while decreasing in others such as battery life, camera, and stability.
By apps, I assume you mean roms. I can't make any recommendations as I have not had a note 2 for a few years but I have found that custom ROMs based off a stock rom are pretty stable. I always like to start with a very bare-bones ROM and add functionality via apps as needed.
I have moved to custom ROMs in the past when apps won't run on the phone's stock rom.
I've run my note 2 on DN3 for a number of years. You can still find a link to the thread in this forum and you will need to root your n2.
Not hard. 1 advantage is you can remove the bloat and it's still a rom that runs well on our device since it was built for our device in it's prime.
If you have any questions send a PM. Happy to help.
