I have recently got my phone back from repair and I have done some tests on it. It seems the magnetic sensor isn't working, most compasses don't work and ones that do are way off and seem to be using the gyro not the magnetic sensor. Hardware test apps report the sensor as there but no readings. Also the pedometer does seem to work either in the fitbit app as it does not register any steps.
I have used the Sensor List app from the store and these seem to be the only 2 not working. Is this just me or does anybody else have this problem?

just you mate all mine working fine
What did you use to determine they are working? I have used the native hardware test using the code *#*#3424#*#* and it seems to fail there too. Apparantly the hall sensor test which is the magnetic sensor is supposed to show the clock when a magnet is put near a blue square on the screen. On mine it doesn't, but instead it turns the screen off and I can hear a click . However the magnet is fairly powerful so it maybe affecting something else. There doesn't seem to be a pedometer test and all the other tests seem fine.
Thanks

Hi,
I've searched high and wide for a solution (other than sending it back to Motofailure repair) and am failing at finding one so far. So I'm hoping I can get some help from here.
So, this is the situation: I make a call, screen instantly turns dark and will only light up again when I press on the area where the light (&) proximity sensor is.
I've already tried the following.
1.) Done a factory reset (3x) - with mem card, with reformatted mem card, w/o mem card.
2.) Clearing the dust on the earpiece hole using an air duster.
3.) There were times that I worked properly after I've uninstalled apps but the issue came about again after a couple of tries.
So, now I'm thinking that I might want to root my Defy to set things right. I'm quite familiar with RSD Lite as I've used it before on my RAZR2 V8.
A bit of background: I bought my Defy on pre-order so this is one of the earlier models. I had the earpiece problem and sent it to Motofailure repair and the whole process took a month (32 days to be exact - long story. I'm avoiding having to send this PoS back. They updated the software when I got it back.
As far as I can recall, I didn't had this problem before the earpiece problem. And I'm thinking it might be a software problem hence I'm now looking at a solution by rooting and flashing the ROM with an original one.
I have no way of finding out (as far as I know) whether this is a hardware problem (hence hesitating to have it sent back to Motofailure repair).
What I've also observed is that when there is direct bright light, it works normally but when its dim, then the problem appears.
I don't have any screen protectors, just so you know.
Can anyone advise me on what to do?
During a call proximity sensor is activated to turn off the screen at the moment it detects proximity and asumes you are using the phone against your hear, so it turns off screen to save energy.
I think you might have some app installed in your phone, using and reversing the sensor status so it detects proximity when there isnt, and viceversa
You might want to try removing apps using that sensor and see if problem gets solved, there is also an app in the masket called sanity; which makes extensive use of proximity sensor for vaqrious things, and have an option to reverse proximity sensor, you might want to try it and see if problem gets fixed.
You might try this things: remove apps using proximity sensor, test phone. Deactivate in pocket detection; test phone, and install sainity, test phone, install a new rom?
If speaker is bigger than original one, or there was an assembly error, light/proximity sensor won't fit into right place.
I've seen such reports and you can't do anything unless you open up thing and check the problem, but you haven't seen the right assembly so you may not know the right place.
Are you using any screen protector? I know some screen protectors cause this problem.
Edit: Nevermind, I see that you're not using any.
how to calibrate the proximity sensor?
My new defy 's proximity sensor seems cannot work correctly, when i making a call ,the screen shut off immediately, and the screen could not light on by any key,but when i touch the proximity sensor with my finger, the screen may be light on!
so i download a app to test the proximity sensor which name's"Android sensor data",this app fingue out the state of proximity sensor,"near" or "far",sometimes I just passing my finger over the proximity sensor, the reading will show 'near' and then remain 'near' even when my finger is moved away!
Can anyone else help me to calibrate the proximity sensor?google told me some android phone can do this ,such as htc, zte etc.
goole tell me android phone have some standard testcode, such as *#*#4636#*#* can show the phone statue,it works correstly in Defy,*#*#0588#*#* test the proximity sensor ,but it doesn't work in defy!!!
I don't think this issue could be solved trough software tweaks. Chances are this is a hardware problem. Maybe you should contact the Motorola support.
try disabling in-pocket detection
have the same problem. it started 2 days ago. Im using CM7. It just turns dark and wont wake up unless someone else is calling me. Just got it tested, and when i cover the sensor with my finger it says 0cm distance for long time.
I've tried data wipe and similar, but nothing helped so far.
EDIT: I've just tried wiping the place where proximity sensor is with some soft cloth and alcohol and for the time being, it works. O.O
Could Wipe Dalvik help?
Just a simple question, does the compass work?
I'm running psx and noticed the compass didn't work in maps. So i downloaded a compass app and that didn't work either and reports a magnetic sensor error.
It does. Yours appears to be a defective unit.
Thanks for checking.
Yes it looks like it's faulty.
Just an update, it was my magnetic case stopping it from working.
Hello Guys,
I'm facing issue with my Samsung Galaxy Note II proximity sensor and Network Issue on it,
Network Part:- First of all it was working fine, after getting patch for KitKat 4.4.2 and installing network issue arise, like suddenly i'm not able to make call's or receive it or even unable to access 3G internet on it, it will show 2 tower on device and "H" symbol but no calls will be done or receive it, while network goes unavailable.
Proximity Sensor:- Proximity sensor is not working properly from last 15-20 days, I tried resetting device, blowing air on sensor on whole device, executed few application gyroscope explorer and few other, but issue still persist.
Today I came to know, when I press front camera part or near to it, then proximity sensor is working fine with out any for a while, then again I need to press it near front camera.
Thanks waiting for your solution's....
Did you managed to get a solution for that!

just replace proximity sensor, it's cheap and helped me to solve similiar issues. my sensor got stuck in one position, sometimes was ok, but now it's working very good, paid 6$ with delivery. easy install

Appreciating your feedback.
It would be great if you explain a little how to install such part! And from where I can buy it.
Many thanks for your valued support.
I've tried using camera electronic level out of box, it's off by a degree. I've tried calibrating many times to adjust the gyro sensor.. And it's still off by a 1 degree even after going through the proper procedures. Anyone having the same problem?
Even when playing racing games, I have to hold the phone slightly slanted to drive straight..

Incorrect gyro sensor issue.
yes, the same thing i have noticed in my phone, i have tested several units and they all suffer the same gyro sensor issue.
I do not know if this is hardware problem or software issue, till now I have not heard any thing about fixing this problem.
it is strange that we both are only ones who noticed this issue!!!!

nope... mine too
I also experienced this problem with the G4. I believe it is being caused by the camera hump causing the phone not to sit perfectly level when the gyro calibration is performed. I put a piece of card under the bottom of the phone to compensate for the camera and make the phone sit flat, reran the calibration (from the settings > display menu) and this has fixed the issue for me.

good answer! - I'm buyin' it!
So, I recently installed Lineage OS on my n7 and noticed auto rotate wasn't working. Then flashed it back to stock thinking the lineage rom was bugged, still no auto rotate, it used to work last time I used the tablet around 3-4 months ago, so im wondering did the gyroscope get fried or something?
Anyway which board contains the gyroscope, the motherboard or daughterboard, anyone know? Recently replaced the daughterboard so im thinking that may control the gyroscope? I want to replace whichever board contains the gyroscope as it doesn't even show it moving in check my android app, don't really want to waste money on the wrong board if possible, so if anyone knows for certain it'd be a huge help!

The gyro is on the daughterboard but it never fails. Connection of the wide silver cable between the boards is the problem - see my earlier post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66952073&postcount=3

But then wouldn't the gyroscope show as moving in apps that can test it? It shows up as stuck, and on the twitch app it acts as if i am shaking the tablet cause it just keeps going from dark mode to light mode because twitch app has a feature that allows you to shake to enable dark mode/light mode.
Anyway I have tried re-seating the ribbon cable about 20 times now and still nothing shows up on gyroscope, even tried 2 different cables

The gyro and compass sensors share the same I2C data line connecting the two N7 PCBs. Please check with a sensor test app if the compass works - if yes, then the gyro has failed indeed.
Some apps will show you the sensors names - N7 has:
gyro Invensense MPU-6500
compass AKM AK8963
:good:

Hmm, the compass seems frozen as well I don't understand though the ribbon cable seems to be fine no matter how many times I disconnect / reconnect it nothing seems to change... Very odd
I have same issue, I use rotate app to manually rotate and also automatically rotate some apps. Eg auto rotate YouTube and media player to landscape.

With the silver ribbon cable connected at one end try and get it tightly moulded around the battery hold it there and connect the other end. I found this out recently after a battery swap it helps to push the connecters in a bit more those few microns matter. I was having screen rotation problems after a recent battery swap after doing this everything's perfect again.
