I was wondering if I were to delete the att apps (att hotspots, att nav. etc.) Would that cause any unwanted side effects?
Sent from my LT28at using XDA Free mobile app
Dont know what you mean by delete? If you mean disable? No, it will not hurt to disable those apps. Those are on just about every att phone. There are lists every where showing you what apps you can disable. Just goole em and you will see. If your rooted. There is a very good app called systemCleanup that will tell what apps are safe. Either way you choose. Both are good options. Search or systemCleanup.

Sounds good, I have clean master which says that there could be problems if I uninstalled them

Just disable those apps if You are not sure. Mostly these apps will show "problems if uninstalled" as they are installed via Your update directly, but don't cause any issues if uninstalled. You can always experiment by taking backup of the app, then uninstall it. If nothing is wrong, then fine, else You can restore them.
Disabling them caused no issues but what I am really trying to do I get control of my hotspot/tethering without the need of an app like foxfi when I try to turn them on, please contact att, but since my phone is unlocked and I am not with att there is nothing they can do.
Sent from my LT28at using XDA Free mobile app
Yes, if your trying to use the hotspot in settings thats going to happen. That is tied in directly to your phone. Which is a att phone. You are essentially running a att rom. The only other way that I would know of. Would be to use a different carrier rom. But then you open up to other issues that would not be good. Just stick with foxfi. Be happy it works. For alot of us. It no longer does.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T217A using XDA Free mobile app
I figured that was the case, anyway, I really like the foxfi app because it hides your tethering usage from your carrier

In theory, yes. If T-Mobile finds out about it though...

If T-Mobile finds out oh well. I already paid for the data once. Why should I have to pay for it again. Either why the will still slow my speeds after 5GB.
But rooting the phone and freezing or removing the tether manager worked for me as well.

Just an FYI. After I uninstalled the tethering manager and rebooted phone I no longer had mobile data or calling or any connecion via the radio.
I had to install it back from the stock back up. Once I did and rebooted it went back to being fine.
In case anyone else runs into this doing the above.
just a reminder, you don't have to uninstall. just freeze using TI Backup, works the same way, but safer.

I have the free version and freeze is not an option. But I am new to TI backup and just grabbed it from the market.
can you confirm portabe wifi hotspot is working by doing this? please let me know before i return the phone.
i'm currently tethered just fine. the only issue i see is that the only way to start tethering is through the settings menu (which is fine... i don't want to start it on accident anyway).

I totally agree with clamder. Its best to just freeze all the apps that you don't want rather than uninstall just to be on the save side.

WiFi Tether Wireless Tethering now that we have root
Thanks to ronin4740,
to get the factory wireless tethering to work you must delete or freeze tethering manager with titanium backup (or similar app). the you should have the wireless tethering feature working.
Wireless Tethering now that we have root
I was wondering if anyone was successfully able to get wireless tether to work now that we have root? If so please share what you did so that we all can get wireless tethering to work. Thanks in advance!

No rooting itself, but there are mods after for tethering, not sure what the other part of your question is.

Lol sorry. Tethering is blocked off cause of the whole verifying through att ****. But would unlocking it take that off? Guessing not qas a wild guess.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Unlocking your phone does not remove carrier restrictions. It simply lets you use different carriers on your device. However, once you root your phone, you can install the tethering mod on your phone via CWM.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
if you want tethering without AT&T knowing about it, pick up FoxFi or Elixer Widget.
both these are free, and basically toggle your Wi-Fi HotSpot settings, without going into settings. and because these apps toggle the setting for you, it somehow bypasses the verifying with AT&T.
have fun.

+1000 to that, thats my only bloat left!
on my att phone, hot spot seemed to be a shortcut that linked to the tethering section of my phones settings. because of this, I figured it was not a standalone app that you could delete. instead I thought maybe it was a shortcut that the carriers created to go right to tethering settings. I ended up just hiding the application so it doesn't show up in my app drawer. if anyone finds a more permanent solution id like to know!

If it just happened randomly, then it's probably on the carrier side. Call and see if they made any changes recently that could affect this. Otherwise, I'm just not sure.

I'm actually wondering if it could be T-Mobile's fault....sorta. with all of their recent changes and network upgrades, couldn't it be possible that some important things are now different, but your carrier has no idea about it as they may not have been informed? Or maybe something like this wasn't expected. It's just a guess of course, but I know the primary apn changed in markets where T-Mobile deployed LTE. Maybe other things changed too?
I know you said you tried the different apn's, but try the file linked below. Rename the current apns-conf.xml with .bak and copy this one over. It's in /system/etc/ I believe. Then reboot and see if it helps. It's all I can think to try right now. But this has only the new T-Mobile apn. All others are removed.

If you're stock, not rooted, there's not a lot you can do. Chances are it's an issue on the carrier side still. Have you tried your SIM in another device? Tried a new, or someone else's SIM?

Well I can still send mms if I use a third party app, without having to use Wi-Fi.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk now Free
Usually a stock sms/mms app sends via the carrier, so it goes over a secure line through their servers....or something similar to that. Hard to explain. 3rd party apps don't care about your carrier and just send over the internet, be you connected via WiFi or mobile data.

I know, and I understand the frustration! But those are some of the very reasons why I think it may back a carrier/account problem.

Fixed it! Had to modify the solavei apn. Basically mms proxy had to be black, had to change authentication type to none, add the ,supl, mns, admin, hipri whatnot. Basically even though this was suppose to be imei specific, it was incorrect.

the wifi tether for root users is not working with the liquid smooth rom just released, but the optimus DE rom works just fine as well as stock. tried reconfiguring it all different ways and mimicking the optimus rom settings I had that worked just fine. not sure why it works fine for one and not for another. any ideas?
just so everyone knows, I'm not a total noob at this. I've had a Samsung nexus S 4g forever, had it rooted for almost 2 years. great phone, moved up to the optimus for its hardware capabilities, but have had some issues with configurations on certain apps. great phone so far, the lg firmware makes it a little difficult to play around with. I've tried wiping davlik, pulling data from my other rom and everything. I went from a 4.1.2 rom to a 4.3.1 rom. i'm wondering if the 4.3 doesn't support the wifi tether? I use the crap out of it and haven't ever been billed for it. its awful handy, and sucks not to have it. tried the trevE mod version too, with the exact settings off my other rom it always starts with errors. if I turn it to NetD it works properly but doesn't show up when I scan to find it. not sure whats going on here?

I think most CM/ASOP ROMs have tethering built in. That's why the app doesn't work.

Stock ROMs you have to pay for. Or root and the app.
CM/AOSP depending which one, have a free hotspot built in. I think it's usually in settings>phone or roaming. Somewhere around there on the settings.
