[Q] The WORST battery life for 3800 mah battery - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

i have the extended battery of 3800 mah. but im still having bad battery life. ive tried all the basic things to fix this problem. (sync off, location off, 4g off, etc) i even put on airplane mode but i can only reach up to about 2 hours on screen time. my bro has a note 3 with a 3100mah battery. why can he last the whole day and i cant even last 5 hours on battery? i even tried using titanium backup to remove google now launcher and google search as this also eats up battery. what else options can i use. (i used wakelock detector and app permissions to stop wakes) thanks.

What rom are you using and which kernel? Also what settings do you use? Any overclock?

Thanks for the speedy reply! Currently I'm at resurrection remix 5.1.1 (latest) using fancy kernel r50. CPU over clocked at 1.3 (not a big difference) and govoner is ondomandplus. Scheduler is sioplus. And read ahead buffer size 1024. That photo is the amount of time my battery dropped a percent.... Sometimes I catch it slippin. And it drop 2 percent. Then when I lock my screen for about 30minutes it goes up 2%. And yes. I wiped battery stats. But still to no avail. GPU clocked at 512 BTW. I have the multi core power saving on too. Set to 2. I use greenify to sleep apps also. Any ideas?

The thing with extended batteries is very often their actual capacities are far less than what they quoted. I suggest you try getting hold of the official extended battery (I can't remember the actual mAh maybe 2100) as with it my phone could last from 2.5 - 3 hours of on screen time, depending on the ROM and kernel.

Was using CM11 M releases until the theme engine bug introduced in the recent M6 build. So I have been trying out different ROMs and SlimKat has been the most stable. The SlimKat stock kernel is good enough otherwise Fancy Kernel is a stable and better choice.

Here are screenshots of a day of quite heavy usage while connected to the WiFi with the latest stable SlimKat Build 5 with its own kernel, using the Galaxy Nexus official extended battery that is 2000mAh. 2 hours 45 mins with 30% left to go.
By the way I rebooted the phone twice to change the LCD density as shown in the graph.

I manage to get 3 hr sot and 1 day uptime with vanir and its stock kernel. Maybe the gpu @512 mhz and the "power hungry" io scheduler are killing it. Try some tweaking. A diffrent governor and tunables. Try Nephilims settings.

I'll turn my phone off at 45% at night and wake up and it'll be dead so you guys all have better battery life than me. I'm on fork my life (omni) without any kernels

It was $10 on eBay is that legit? XD and I managed to get 3 hours screen on time with this battery before. Now I can't. And this battery doesn't have a company name ?

Vanir has always been so bad with battery life for me. Stock battery and extended. Dies in 1 hour for stock battery. And dies in about 2-3 hours with extended. Very little sot. About 20 min

Wow I don't think it's very legit. It could be just above 2000mAh in real life and then couldn't hold as much charge after a while that's why the battery drained so fast. Not to mention the risks of using dodgy batteries [emoji46]
I think I bought mine from a Korean eBay seller for at least $30 or more. The battery is also NFC-enabled and comes with a back that added a bit of thickness so most gel cases could fit.
---------- Post added at 01:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:49 AM ----------
One other thing to note is that even with genuine batteries they will start to lose charge or can't hold charge like it used to after 2-3 years. That's why I think phones with removable batteries are better especially if you plan to use them for up to 5 years. You can just get a new battery after 2-3 years

I'm not really worried about this that much. Because I will be having an upgrade in august. So I guess I'll keep this battery I have. But I am getting decent battery right now with pacman ROM with stock kernel. With some init.d battery tweaks built into the ROM. And using app opps

[Q] even with extended battery only 6 hours

I've gotten the 2,100 mAh extended battery. I've turned off lte. and with NO web surfing or video, I run out of juice in 6 -7 hours. Not even a lot of calls. Maybe 20 minutes max. In Settings, the battery tab shows Android OS using 60% of the battery. My wife's Droid X show Android OS at 2%
What's going on? What could be using so much of the battery?
Any references to where tishas been discussed?
sean
how many days have you been using the extended battery? i also had 6-8 hours when i first got it, but just wait a couple of days, you will be fine. it takes a couple days for the battery to actually settle. i have had the extended battery for over a month and now i get 12-14 hours on one charge, with LTE & WiFi & GPS on, 40% brightness, and quite a lot of use
Just got mine yesterday... also having similar results the first full day of use...took off the charger at 10 and was at 25% by 6. I was at work only slightly browsing forums, web, calls, etc ...

Me too got my gnex and full charged at 8am and usually i will be down to 25% by noon.
I have tried flashing kernel (fransco) and rom (bigxie) and same.
They are talking about the device is not getting deep sleep. Any recommendations on what apps could have wait up or prevent the phone from getting deep sleep? I assume email push, IMs? But then iphone has them too and they can last long...
Any help is appreciated. Thx.
when you get a new battery, the first few days are gonna suck.
I'm sitting at 14.5 hours @ 29% left. I leave 4g on all the time. I'm a moderate user, heavy user sometimes.
Yes Android OS is the culprit. The problem went away after I put a the Open Kang Project rom on it.
I didn't hear about an official 2100 mAh battery. Maybe it's not original. Not original batteries are most of the time over stated. you can remove 50% of the mAh in that case.
I bought the official 2000 mAh battery with a new back cover (because the old one won't fit) and it gave me 10-20% more autonomy. Now it's up to 12h

Just root and flash a custom rom. I'm on the standard battery and getting 1.5 days with moderate use 3G + Wifi on Manhattan IC112 rom with overclocking enabled to 1.32Ghz (using imoseyon kernel that come preloaded), bluetooth on half the time, sync on, and a ton of extra features. (full day with moderate-heavy usage).
Almost similar performance on MCR Ir10 rom.
Using XXKK6 radio.

This is nonsense. AOKP probably does provide better battery life but that has nothing to do with "Android OS" being "the culprit". Battery life for Android OS is reported differently in ICS than in any previous version of Android, that's why it shows a higher % than previously. It's neither a bad nor a good thing.

3800mah battery cycle?

Hey guys, i got the 3800mah siedio, and its lasting 4hr screen time, but i heard it can take 5-10cycles to get the best usage. I have charged it 5times, but is a cycle like using it all day? I used it only to 50% and then charged it for the last 5days, and still only 4hr screen time. Should i return it and try a hyperion or keep it and keep charging? Is a cycle considered 0-100%? or, not sure what to do. On Bamf JB rom 50Screen, 3g, no wifi, gps, or bt

only 4hours yes, not sure what to do, no apps are killing it, idk if its apex or something else. Umm, could it be defective? or, on like 4hr screen time, 14hr standby, my battery was dead,
any idea? was hoping for 8hr screen time or more
on 3g or wifi?
I get close 3:45 on wifi and 3 hours on 3g on my stock 1750 mAh battery. Your battery must be defective, even accounting for the fake mah written on the battery

I have a Hyperion and a qcell 3800. It really depends on the ROM for me... I'm running CM10 nightlies and sometimes I get the same "screen" consumption and my battery is dead in 2-5 hours. When I was on the stock ICS rom it seemed to last a lot longer. Perhaps it is just something that needs to be worked out with these roms?
Could you try running something like go power management to see if it lasts longer?
Just bought a 2000mah Batt OEM
can you post the link for stock ICS rom for galaxy nexus vzw plz
well i got a replacement battery and a nexus replacement, and no improvement. On 3g still only recieving about 4hrs of battery life. I tried stock ics, bamf jb, and liquid smooth ics with franco and trinity kernel, no luck. I am debating of selling the phone, or exchanging the siedio for a hyperion. I really want atleast 5-6 hrs of screen time on it. What is weird is, I was using IM+ and even without it, battery drains the same, but it mostly drains quicker when browsing. I should be able to get 5-6hrs of browsing on 3g i would think. I am wondering if Google is checking for updates, for some reason, it has all my picasa pictures, can i disable all that, so only have gmail? maybe it is download stuff, idk but would stop eventually i would think. Really love the phone, but i got better battery on my 1750mah battery on my droid x, or even on a iphone. BTW, i always keep gps, bt, wifi, and 4g off. and 40% brightness.

Why Do People Complain About Battery?

I've seen so many threads here and at The Verge that I just don't understand. I've been using Android devices now for about two years and I've NEVER had a problem with battery life being worse than my iPhones. I have a 3GS and the battery on it dies after about 8-10 hours of moderate use. Meanwhile, I'm at 12 hours on my SGS3 and 50% battery. I also have quite a lot of applications running in the background. Granted, today I have been low usage, but yesterday I was on the phone for hours and I still went 12 hours before the battery icon turned yellow. I haven't HAD to recharge before 12 hours for ages, even my Atrix went longer than that. I even have a screenshot from a few days ago where I went 14 hours and only dropped to 63%.
Are people just nuts or what is going on here?
People expect to play games at max brightness for hours and still get 12 hours battery life.
In with you, I use my phone constantly through out the day, I run my business from my phone, and routinely get 14+ hours per charge no problem. I just made a few tweaks, nothing big, and I'm good to go. This phone lasts noticeably longer than all my previous iPhones 3,3g and 4. Plus it charges twice as fast as those and never over heats... all my iPhones would get so hot that I couldn't charge them in the car with out testing then in an ac vent, and that's just from half an hour to an hour of talking... sgs3, I can talk for hours with no overheating, and it charges like a boss.

Before I flashed Cyanogenmod on my S3, I rarely reached over 10 hours of battery use with data on.
Neither one of my galaxy phones overheated to where they shut off until one decided it was dirty and jumped in the washer(rip 1st sgs2) .
I had changed my iPhone 4 back glass to one of those metal backs. Now when its on charge it will almost burn your hand if ur holding it. And I have had it shut off while on Facebook. Battery never last very long on I phones if the brightness is up data going WiFi seeking and jbing.

people complain even though they jumped from a 3.5 to a 4.8 720 screen device. Faster processor etc. With hspa or LTE speeds. I mean really. lol
My battery life is great! Much better than any other phone I've owned...12 hours of use for me is nothing....I get 18+ without a problem....frequently I've gone well over 24 hours.
Chargers. That is all.
I mean don't these people go home and charge your device?

I think some phones came with defective batteries. I'm running juice defender and could easily make it through a 16 hour day. 3-4 hours of screen time was not uncommon. 3 months later, and I can barely get 10 hours of use and 1.5 hours of screen time. Time to get a new battery!

I am not sure what is going on. I don't have the best battery life I can get 10 to 12 hours moderate use. Steaming music, reading rss feeds, checking email, 2 to 3 hours screen on. I would easily last a day on my iPhone 4. I have juice defender, lowest screen setting, custom kernel with under volting. I think it has something to do with my area. Att is so congested in my area I am barely able to use data sometimes. It's better with lte but still an issue at times.

People use their phones differently. Just saying.
If I don't turn the screen on, with LTE data, my phone dies in 9 hours (I tested it). And this doesn't mean there's a problem with it. I have around 15 different push notification apps running in the background, all of which are using data almost continuously. I don't think I can expect it to last much longer. And if I know I'm not going to be near a power source for longer than that, I simply turn off syncing to get better battery life.
To me, it looks like the LTE radio is the biggest battery hog. Let's see if the iPhone 5 can somehow get around this problem so that other manufacturers can take note

I was going to mention this. I noticed a significant improvement in battery life once I used JuiceDefender to turn off data while my screen is off. 4G LTE is the main culprit of most of the complaints for battery life (in addition to brightness). That is going to be a big problem for the new iphone if they can't get the battery management for 4G correct. It has taken Samsung a couple of years to get the battery working decent with 4G. I have my doubts that Apple could top them the first year running LTE on the iphone. Who knows, maybe that will be the "new" feature they have been working on over the year, LTE power management. That's the direction Motorola has headed in their new RAZOR MAXX devices. We'll see, either way, the consumer comes out on top as we have more competition to drive down prices and receive better products each year.
Best battery life for SGS3
With AMOLED and Android u gotta take special measures to get good battery life:
- kill bloatware. NostalgiaTurboSlim script will help. Or freeze unneeded apps - like Maps and enable them only when needed.
- disable various notifications - Play Market, WiFi etc
- disable ads - root and download AdAway app - they steal your mobile traffic, battery life and make you blind!
- put dark nonLive Wallpaper
- remove any widgets you don't use. I just removed all of them.
- disable animations and transitions
- disable haptic feedback
- disable touch tones/sounds/vibrations
- try using nonAuto brightness (I gave up on that - sunlight does not allow me to change anything manually)
- disable autorotation
- use dark Opera browser user.css
- use inverted or dark themed apps and Gapps, there is dark MMS, Twitter and Facebook in my ROM
- downclock CPU to 1GHz, or enable PowerSave On.
- use modern KToonsez kernel with PegasusQ governor, it downclocks CPU during screen off
- use CPU1 disabler script if your ROM/kernel supports it
- keep chargers around you, buy them at amazon
- buy spare OEM battery - I'm against aftermarket batteries, they are all fake rated
Or just buy latest iPhone 5 and enjoy.
Remember: Android is for tinkerers! That's why we love it! :victory:
Why do people still use some sort of battery management app life JuiceDefender or the like.
GET RID OF THEM NOW !(most of you that use it are probably coming over from an Iphone so you may be new but aren't well educated in how the Android OS works)
This phone comes with its own Task Manager as well as removing unwanted apps that are running in the background that you have previously used and don't need running.
So get rid of these dumb apps that don't do anything.
-End rant.

How is your battery life

My galaxy w battery is dying before it reach one year usage! and it is swollen.
What about you?
If you doubt your battery is ok or not check whether it is swollen. This is detectable by feeling and viewing the inside/phone-side of the battery case. Also, when the battery is placed inside/phone-side down on a flat, smooth surface, it will rock and will sustain a spin motion. The case of a healthy battery is flat, and the battery will not a spin easily.
I think the battery quality is low. Isn't it? I've not seen any phone with this horrible battery life! My previous phone battery could last for more than 4 years!
not even a day , 15-16 hours and i had to charge it . I got the phone for 11 months and this is the situation . Using arco's cm 10 beta 1 btw .

I think an updated custom kernel for CM10.1 A2 is really needed now. Sadly the devs are busy
I'm not getting any battery savings from Hurtsky's kernel.

Same here. Samsung batteries suck big time in my opinion. I never had a Nokia battery fail outright in 20 years of using their phones, but my first Samsung phone battery lasted around 9 - 10 months and then started to fail - bulging, inconsistent performance, inaccurate battery level reported (even though battery health was reported as good)
On a new, calibrated battery I can get 30 - 40 hours from a charge under moderate use - when I get round to it I will be buying a spare battery for when this one dies (I do always buy genuine parts) as I have so little faith, and I am now a wiser man to how poor the quality is and what the signs of it starting to die are.
I notice that Sammy don't give 12 months warranty on the battery when you buy a new a phone, just on the handset itself.
My battery life just 3 hours whe I use to browse with 3g connection

Today I saw one of my friend who has a galaxy sII. I asked him about its battery. He was unsatisfied.
The phone itself has a good battery life but the life cycle of battery is too short. When the battery gets damaged battery saving tricks aren't effective.
Now my phone shut itself down even when the battery is above 50%. I'm going to change the battery but I wonder how much will be the life of the new one?
Isn't there any petition to force Samsung to be responsible for its batteries?

Me too. Still with CM9 RC2 because of 2.6.35 Kernel, wich is way more battery friendly than the new 3.x kernel. With Arcos stock 2.6.35 Kernel my battery lasts for 3-5 days and with my personal kernel even longer.
Reagarding battery life in general those new generation high density batteries do not last as long as the old low density batteries you were using in your old phones. Most of the high density batteries will last up to 1 year, but that´s it. However now you can get them for about $10, so it´s not such a big pain in replacing them once a year. The old low density batteries did cost twice or 3 times more when you had to replace them. Now they are cheap too, but a few years ago you had to spend much more for such a battery.

[Q] Normal Battery Life with Stock Battery?

I'm on CM11 M6 and I recently was forced to switch back to the stock OEM 2100 mAh battery from Samsung due to a heat problem with my external battery. I'm just trying to see if what I'm getting is normal battery life or if there is any tweaking I can do to improve battery life?
ROM: CM11 M6
Kernel: KT747 AT&T 4.4 with Asswax CPU governor and BFQ scheduler
Battery: Stock OEM 2100 mAh
You seem to be around normal results from what I've gathered. On stock battery you should be getting around 4hrs of screen on-time. This of course varies on the age of the battery as they run out of juice as they get older.

4.3 touchwiz only gets me 2:45 on screen time, 4 hours is generous.

I've only ever been able to get 4+ hours of screen-on time with a larger 4200 mAh battery from Hyperion. At the most on either AOSP rom's or stock rom I get about 2.5, MAYBE 3 hours depending on kernel setup.

Yeah thats way below norm imo. I can't prove it atm as I haven't used my phone as much today but I've attached a SS of my stats as they stand atm.
I've got approx 2hrs of listening to music on there. Thus the large difference between screen on/awake time. Otherwise after 10+ hrs of discharging it's looking great to me.
I'm thinking of leaving my screen on for a couple hours tomorrow, I'll come back with the results if I do perform the test.

Here you go gents, after 2hrs of screen on time I still have 50% of my battery remaining. Leaving me with approx another 2+hrs in the remaining battery life as the initial 2hrs was gathered in almost 5hrs. This is using the stock Samsung 2100 mAh battery.

How are you achieving these stats? One of the things about Android that really pisses me off is I always feel the need to do my own power management and I can't seem to find a way that sticks.

I don't do much to be completely honest. The only thing I do specific to power management is use Greenify to Hibernate apps that are causing excessive wakelocks.
Other than that, I have Quantum 3.63 ROM with QuantumKernel 3/16 installed running with intelliactive and row.
