Hello everyone, I have a quick question and would like someones opinion. I got an s3 from tmobile a couple months ago and it's still running 4.2. I was thinking about rooting it when i have more experence but for now i was just planning on updating to 4.3 but I've heard there was problems rooting an s3 due to knox. So should i just wait to update and just root or is everything fine and i can go ahead and update? Sorry for my dumb question I'm kinda new, been lurking around the forums for a month but just finally made an account Well thank you in advance I appreciate it.
P.S I Also heard you cant downgrade once its updated, is that true?
You cannot downgrade your firmware. But you can still flash older roms and kernels. If you are still under warranty, know that flashing will trip the warranty bit in the bootloader and cannot be reversed.
Otherwise, I see no reason not to update. Knox is easily removed. If you care to do so, I suggest updating by flashing the NC2 root66 firmware via Odin. You will be updated, rooted and knox is already removed. You might even be lucky and avoid tripping the warranty bit this way.

yea I am still under warrenty. I was going to wait until it expired then root but i thought updating would cause problems when i did decide to do it. Thanks for your answer tho, I'm just going to update now, I don't want to root now and i have problems its still fairly new.
You can update either by ota, or flashing the official firmware with odin. See my sig for my firmware thread. If you go the Odin route you will get much faster firmware downloads by going there.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and i started rooting not to long ago so i guess I'm a little bit higher than noob level but here's the thing, I did not do my research prior to updating my S3 to 4.3 via OTA update. I was already rooted with 4.1.2 so when i updated I thought i would just remove the root which it did but super user was still on my phone. I was only given the option to "turn off" (new feature of 4.3) and me being OCD about my phone I didn't like that. So I tried to use odin to go back to stock 4.1.1 thinking I could Just upgrade back and I was denied. I did some research discovering that I cannot do that because I was already on 4.3. Later on I found out it was possible to re-root 4.3 which is in the general forums. So I did that and removed knox with the "DeSamsungnizer" and tried downgrading to a custom firmware Cyanogenmod 10.1 based on 4.2.2 to be exact but I was denied again on the Clockworkmod recovery screen (also tripping the warranty counter). So since that didnt work I thought why not upgrade to the the cyanogenmod 10.2 based on 4.3 and that DID work... so i tried to odin back to 4.1.1 on cyanogenmod since i've done it before but again I was denied.. doing more research I discovered that andriod 4.3 came with a new bootloader so today I tried going back to 4.1.2 on my phone via one of my previous backups on CWM and it worked, once again, I tried to odin back down to stock 4.1.1 thinking I restored the old bootloader which I was finally denied again. So now I'm here, sitting on the rooted 4.3 with a locked bootloader and tripped warranty counter. So now youve heard my story, you are probably wondering why I'm here telling you all this, here's my question.
Is there any way I can downgrade this locked bootloader or unlock the bootloader itself that comes with 4.3 so I can finally get rid of the root, restore my warranty and go back to the experience had when I first bought the phone? honestly, I'm ready to retire from rooting, ive seen all the bells and whistles, tried custom firmwares, used rooted apps and all that, but now, I just dont care for it anymore. If there is no way to fix this problem currently, which a lot of those might have ran into as well is there any news of developers working on a fix for this? If there is I would like this forum to be the central discussion thread for our 4.3 bootloader issues. Thanks for reading! I hope someone can help!

Short answer NO. no you can not, you upgraded to the 4.3 bootloaders you're now stuck there, make the most out of it, I have hard bricked my phone 3 times in the last week trying to get back to an older version. Good luck.
Phone was lost, just got replacement this morning.
My last S4 had been rooted running custom firmware for months w/o issue.
Read through a bunch of threads, ranging from the opinion that the bootloader change + knox wont be a big issue to the sky is falling.
Is it recommended to root my phone at this time, I do have JUMP and would be replacing it once something better comes out? The phone is running 4.2.2, caught it trying to update to already.
Thanks.. I know this may seem redundant but haven't been active on these boards since I got my CFW going. Not seeking help in flashing or anything.. just advice

Up to you. If the stock rom is bearable and you wanna run the 4.3 stock rom then by all means, go for it.

Being that your'e using the T-Mobile M919, the whole KNOX bootloader situation doesn't pertain to you as long as you're sure you're on 4.2.2. Root it, flash it, theme it with Hello Kitty... whatever, it doesn't matter; you can still revert back to stock and reset any tripped counters. 4.3 is when the problems begin and the KNOX counter is implemented and can't be reset.

I second this.
SO LONG AS YOU ARE ON 4.2.2
- You can root flash do whatever, theme with hello kitty or barbie xD like lordcheeto said or keep it stock
- Install recovery and flash away.
- Will always be able to revert back to 100 percent stock
TAKE 4.3 UPDATE
- I think you are still able to root it without tripping knox counter. Can't remember the last status of that was. But as long as you root it without a custom recovery, i think you are ok. From what i can remember, the bootloader checks the recovery status and trips the knox counter based off the recovery that is on the device. If its different then stock, it trips. But double check with Google about this first.
- If you trip knox counter, you will NEVER (as of now and possibly forever) get it back to zero.
Rooting with safe root won't trip knox and also disables it. But recoveries, kernels, roms, etc will trip the flag

Root it with chain fire and never look back.
You're on 4.22, so you're golden. Just flash a rooted stock ROM that's on 4.3 and you'll avoid Knox.
I'm running 4.4.2 and never seen this Knox stuff.

Correct. I've rooted my my second GS4G on 4.3 MK2 and it did not trip the KNOX counter. If you're still on 4.2.2 MDL, then there is no need to update your bootloader. Simply flash ROMs through recovery and flash the 4.3 modem. You will have the goodness of 4.3 on KNOX-less 4.2.2 bootloader. :highfive:
Background info (can be skipped):
So I successfully rooted and installed custom recoveries/roms on my phone back when it first came out.. Fast forward and now I have a different GS3, everything stock 4.3. I was just about to unroot and all that fun stuff but it's been a while and now I'm hearing about KNOX and the obstacles it brings with it. I spent some time reading up on it but right now I'm a little lost and scared of bricking the phone.
How do I unlock the bootloader on 4.3? How do I unroot a phone with KNOX? I've found a lot of How To's, but they were all written before 4.3 and KNOX and I'm afraid of bricking my phone...
Thanks, and sorry if this is a repeated question (it probably is, but I cant find solid answers).
Find and Odin a build of stock 4.3,only wadi you'll brick because of Knox is if you try to Odin a build that didn't have Knox in it, hope that clears it up a little for you

Hello,
I haven't been here in so long. After reading through the forum I am a little confused.
I am on stock 4.1.2, rooted, and using CW recovery.
I see all the discussion about not updating to 4.3, but I'm not sure if what I have read is up to date or not.
Is there still a problem updating to 4.3? KNOX?
How should I update to 4.3? Do it need to undo root and go back to stock recovery? I'm not sure how to do this. I have used custom ROMS in the past but it's been too long.
Also, it seems that rooting 4.3 is no problem. Is this true?
Thanks,
rblancrt

Sure, you can upgrade to 4.3 if you want to
the reason why people said not to upgrade to 4.3 is because a lot of people DO NOT READ and come asking for help this or that after they upgrade
and the main reason why people mention not to upgrade is because you can unlock for free as long as you can downgrade your phone to 4.1.1, mainly the bootloader since 4.3 bootloader comes with KNOX
since you're still on 4.1.2, you can downgrade and unlock your phone for free while you still can before upgrading it to 4.3
so this is what you should do, check, if your phone is fully unlocked, if not, unlock it then upgrade
or if you're rich and you don't care, just upgrade and then if you wish to unlock later, pay for unlock code =D
and rooting shouldn't be any problem regardless of which version of android you're on.
to upgrade, you can just download the stock img and flash it through recovery or just use odin flash it
or if you're prefer the old fashion way, the long way in fact, is to unroot, upgrade through system update
I would say don't upgrade. The new bootloader has a warranty bit (aka the Knox counter) that, once tripped, can't be reset. Ever. By anyone. The ONLY way I would even consider upgrading is if you need Knox security for work (the majority of us don't). I wouldn't even upgrade if I were selling the device. Let the new owner make that decision for themself. But, I would unlock it. Even if you never need it, it may add a few bucks to the selling price of the phone later on.

But what exactly is the effect of this Knox counter. If it's only that I can't reflash a stock ROM and send it back to Samsung that time has long passed.
I guess I'm getting bored with my phone, had it almost two years, and thought updating to the latest firmware might help.
What are the repercussions of going to 4.3 or higher?
Thanks again for the great info.
If you are out of warranty, the only drawback, imo, to updating is you cannot downgrade the firmware or modem. You could still flash older roms and kernels, just not the full firmware and not the modem.
Personally, I wouldn't let knox deter me from updating, or recommending it. This is for each person to decide, but I feel the benefits outweigh any drawbacks. knox is easily removed or disabled, and I find the latest builds to be some of the best in terms of performance and battery. (of course there are always some who disagree with that on every update!) of course there are no guarantees, but most seem to be quite happy with both 4.3 and 4.4.2.
As for downgrading.....I have never found a real need for doing so. Some have though, so thats something you need to decide for yourself.
You can try some of the available roms w/o updating the firmware btw. But if you decide you like them, I do suggest going back and fully updating for stability and performance, but thats something for you to decide if you want to go that route.
There will be some who agree and some who do not, so in the end its up to you make an educated decision whether or not you want to.
Hi I'm still on 4.3 MI7, should i update to 4.4? I've heard people saying in the forums that 4.3 is still better. what would you suggest? I just want to root either way i end up going. My pervious note 3 was rooted through ODIN with knox tripped, but when i got my replacement i never rooted it so I'm stock right now. If i stay on MI7 would i be able to use towel method to root? From my understanding NE6 would work with towel method but wasn't sure with MI7. What are some pros or cons to updating to 4.4? Any help would be useful
P.S. if i do update why would be the easiest way to keep all my data, apps , ext.. thanks in advance ~CANGOODZ~
I'm holding off as well. I'm waiting for confirmation that there is a safe way to roll back. Once I see that, I may go for it.
In the interim, I've been considering Darth stalker as a ROM.

I would want to remain stock without custom recovery and knox 0x0. Just so I can run some tweaks and tb. I ran wicked roms and all my previous devices but it seems for the note 3 evil art hasn't been keeping up with his roms. Is anyone able to help me with what I should do about updating and towel root?
I made last night a thread asking a safe way to update MI7 to NE6 (it's what you need for towel root), maybe you want to keep an eye on it too:
