So, I'm a total beginner with regards to understanding how to mod your cell phone, but I am tech savvy. I've spent the last week of my life attempting to understand how to Sim unlock my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 mini Sph-L520 so that I would be able to use a prepaid Straight Talk wireless card with it. At first, I thought the process was going to be rather simple. I thought I could just buy a code online. Turns out that this phone isn't a GSM phone, so this type of unlocking isn't possible. I next heard as tip about getting my phone flashed, but apparently flashing is just installing another operating system on your phone. Though I could see how that might be able get around the Sim Unlock, if possible I would like to keep this stock OS. Also, I'm not certain if flashing my phone would automatically enable me to use another carrier. I then learned what rooting was. Though I now understand that I could simply use Kingo to root my phone, I don't know how that would allow me to use another carrier. So i've spent my last week or so understanding all this new terminology, but I still don't have a definitive answer. I really want to thank this board for existing because I've learned a tremendous amount just reading these threads. So if anyone could help me out here that would be great!

I did contact sprint, they said that the phone wasn't stolen and that everything was okay. They then transferred me, but told me that they could only give me the msl code. Is that what I need? Would that carrier unlock my phone?

Does the phone have a slot for a SIM card? If so you could try following this thread step by step. Not saying its going to work but its worth a shot. Its also going to depend on what version software your on. You could always pay $30.00 and get a code from CellUnlocker.

I'll attempt it, but the method described is for a regular Galaxy S4. My phone is an S4 mini, would there be any difference?
I attempted this method, and it didn't work. The phone would not let me flash that rom with odin. It failed every time.

All you have to flash is the modem but that will probably fail also since its not for the mini. You have to find a way to get into the service menu for the mini and then it would more than likely work.

That's not working either. I have installed Cyanogenmod following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2669991
but no signal trying to cannot on GSM network.
I have also tried:

but of course that didn't work too, and since Sprint unlock codes doesn't work either it looks like we are stuck
My baseband is L520VPUAMK1.
Any help would be highly appreciated,
Cheers!

Sprint L520 S4 mini is completely unlocked for use of any CDMA 1x/evdo/4G LTE services in the world. Carriers like Smartfren, Intertelekom, Reliance, Tata and MTS will work flawlessly on this phone. Only read its SPC code, make it RUIM only from DFS and insert any CDMA carrier's SIM

How to convert galaxy s4 mini sph-L520 in gsm for France?

International/domestic sim unlock
The GSM portion of the s4 mini can be unlocked .I'm more than sure of it because I have a friend who has his own method .Look up randy unlocks on ebay.He can do it remotely and will call you on the phone and it only takes thirty minutes. I've unlocked plenty of regular Sprint s4's myself ,that process is very easy. The s4 mini would be too if you could find the modems anywhere. He has never told me how he does it but get ahold of him.
Can anyone help me ? Can you back up your radio.img from your unlock phone and send to me ?

Hey everyone!
I keep reading over and over and over the same questions: HOW CAN THIS NOTE 8 BE ROOTED?
It is very simple actually and takes a few seconds and ZERO flashing. I have read super complicated methods and this one I present to you below is BY FAR the absolute easiest. I have done this myself on dozens of Note 8's. It works perfectly every single time.
1. Download and install "SafeRoot".
2. Unpack it.
3. Run "install.bat".
4. Reboot Note when script finishes.
ENJOY FULL ROOT after a few seconds of time.
I hope this helps the many people I have read about asking how to root this nice little device.
Click thanks if this helps you out! (maybe this will be a "sticky" post so many can be helped)
Thanks!
GREAT!!!
Thank you very much!
Thanks!
This worked fine for me, and was, as described, SUPER EASY. i was able to de-bloat, but cannot find anyway to move apps to the ext SD card, as I hoped. Any suggestions?
Ok, I rooted my i467 the hard way....but, do you any news on the custom recovery yet? Thanks,

Where would you recommend for buying the unlock code?

I rooted first with saferoot.zip.
and later performed the unlock. There are a few online unlockers. I prefer one that does not ask for personal information and uses paypal. Just an email and IMEI number. They are all about the same cost. I cannot remember who I used, but I chose the mid price option for 1 to 2 day responce, though I got the unlock codes within an hour.

Thanks for your response. If you don't mind more questions -
1. Would rooting the Note 8.0 make the devise eligible to install Samsung Premier Suite?
2. I presume the saferoot.zip folder should be downloaded to Note 8.0, so no cable is involved. Right?
3. Would unlocking the device mean I'll be able to use sim cards from European and Asian GSM carriers and use the Note 8.0 for tethering?
Thanks again for you kind response.

No, the saferoot.zip is unzipped and ran from the Windows based PC, and you will need the Samsung charging cable to connect.
As for using UK, Canadian, and Asian GSM networks. You will need to load a modem file manually, and if using wifi edit the database with sqlite to the region and channels you are running. For example, US will have nothing listed for channels. To get 14 channels, you can change to JP and 14, and will work everywhere, even in the states.
I have not gotten that far with manually loading the modem file as of yet.
Once you root with saferoot, you may opt to install the Rootcloak app from play store, and install the needed substrate driver, it will tell you when you setup rootcloak.
Any app that does not work with root can be added to rootcloak's white list. I have not found any issues with it and it works very well.

It's probably too late to say this, but I got mine a couple of days ago and I requested an unlock from AT&T as a non-customer and they sent me one in less than 12 hours.
I'm just putting this here so that people know that they should ask AT&T first. It's free and of course it's completely legal. If you are denied, then may be you can go to those websites.
Hope this helps...

How do you request an unlock from AT&T as a non-customer?
I request an unlock as a former AT&T customer, and after several phone calls and an online request, I still couldn't get the unlock code. At first AT&T claimed I had reached maximum number of unlocks for my account, and then they said this phone/tablet is associated with another account and only the account holder can request the unlock code. Another friend of mine also requested an unlock and was also told she had reached her maximum allowable unlocks (5/year). There is no way she could have requested 5 so far this year. In fact, it's zero. In all, good for you that you could get the code, but for me, it's a very frustrating experience.

I got an unlock code a couple days ago for Note 3 as a previous customer, though I had a line for 1 day. With the Note 8.0, I called them and told them I'm not a customer but I bought a used one with clean ESN that was fully paid, so they take your email and open a case for you, after which they contact you. In both times I was lucky that they sent me the unlock code in less than a day...
This is BY FAR the easiest ROOT method available for this tablet. Over and over I still see people posting ?'s about rooting this. Use SAFEROOT. It's a no brainer and takes 5 seconds. Enable Developer Mode on your Tab. Install USB drivers to PC. Plug the tablet in. Run install.bat from unpacked SafeRoot folder in admin CMD terminal. DONE.

Doesn't this use the same exploit as towelroot? If so it has been patched in kernels dated June 3, 2014, or later which shouldn't be a problem for Note 8.0 users unless Samsung releases another OTA update.
Just be aware that rooting is only halfway there if you want to run custom ROM's and kernels. Flashing a custom recovery will still trip the KNOX "warranty void" flag if you have already upgraded to 4.4.2 even though that can be done from a rooted Android ROM using apps like Flashify.

The "official" Samsung stock ROM is still sitting @ 4.1.2 so this Root method still works perfectly when @ stock rom. You are correct in that people wanting custom roms will still need to go about loading preferred recovery methods. I offer the root method simply because there aren't a lot of custom roms floating around for this Tab and it allows for users to gain access and modify things they obviously wouldn't be able to on the stock rom. I doubt there will be any OTA for this Tab ... but you never know. -smiles-

I didn't realize that AT&T still hasn't provided the KitKat upgrade to this version of the Note 8.0. I have the WiFi only version (N5110) but I know that Rogers Canada has provided KitKat to their users of a model very similar to the AT&T version.
If and When AT&T decides to provide that update both rooting and flashing alternate firmware will be more difficult and likely to trip the KNOX flag in the 4.4.2 bootloader that voids the warranty.

Thanks for having me as a member. I am a noob and do not understand much of what I have read the past few days. I felt this forum was the best place to post. If you can help me, thanks. If your local to Richmond, VA, even better. :good: If you run a business that can help me, feel free to send me your info. :fingers-crossed:
I had an ipod touch 1 that died and I purchased a samsung galaxy tab 3 model sm-t217s from a co worker who loves all things wireless and sprint powered. I discovered 2 card slots and saw one was a sim card. I promptly returned it to my coworker who said they didnt use the tablet anymore and had another phone. I advised them to call Sprint and see if it needs to be returned and if they needed to do anything that a reset of the tablet sold to me.
The tablet works ok, did a lot of updating and wants a sim card.I enabled developer mode or menu in settings and can get a lot of extra data like imei, hex, meid, mac id, etc, etc, etc.
Question:
Ok, If possible can in theory this tablet work on straight talk, wallet pop or some pay as you go data service ? Yes or No? and which one, which one do I need to buy?
What does flash mean?
What does unlock mean?
Do I need a sim card before attempting to unlock?
Do I need to root it?
Reading the forums in searching other than enable developer I tried to "upgrade" the OS on the tablet. I downloaded oden 3.09 and "installed" twrp2.7 and or cwm try 15. I got a boot menu when I hold down the volume and power button. I then tried 2 files I had uploaded to the sdcard Supersu 2.01 and the 2 abovementioned.
When I select install from sdcard It looks like it wants to install it, but I get some red text that says something to the effect signature invalid, verification failed, etc. I do not have it word for word. I found another thread here about that and the solution was to use cf root. What is cf root and do I need to do anything with it?
Thanks for your help. I feel like an idiot as I cant figure this out of get this to work as I had purchased a used samsung note 10 2012 model and successfully installed 4.4.2, but reverted to the stock os as the samsung crap made the stylus more useful.
PS, Im not a robot.
You can't bring it to Straight Talk, but I'd recommend bringing it to FreedomPop. You need to get a SIM card, but you can buy that off of Ting.
SIM unlocking won't really do any good. I did that on mine and it did nothing for me lol.
You won't be able to flash much, since there aren't many ROMs out for it. I personally used stock until I recently flashed Negalite.
Ive done a lot of reading in regards to this. almost every place I read says other roms should flash on device not of those carriers. reason im investigating this is because CM for sprint has all the sms issues. and after reading through all the tmo roms im not seeing anyone mention sms issues. every time I try to flash another carriers rom it reads that they are carrier specific and fail. is there a way I can make another carriers rom flash to sprint. my device is unlocked, though im using a sprint sim for lte and from what im reading also, its just a matter of an apn setting for sprint, and/or a radio flash for sprint. anyways, comments?

I wouldn't flash another carriers roms. it can make your phone brick and just a paper weight. other carriers have different settings and files that our phone doesn't..i don't know how to explain it better but I don't recommend it

That is kind of unfortunate if that's the case that SMS doesn't work right out of the gate on Sprint CM ROM's then. While I have gotten used to it, it does get annoying after a while having to reconfigure using the *#*#4636#*#* method every time.
I have tried to flash a few other carrier based ROMs via TWRP but they typically fail anyways (which is probably a good thing). I don't think I've ever actually successfully flashed another carrier based ROM through TWRP.

You can't just flash a tmobile rom on this device. It sounds like to me you need to get your phone unlocked to use tmobile sim. I would suggest http://www.idoneapps.com to sim unlock your phone.
I have no idea what you mean by password screen. What firmware are you on? How did you root your phone? Did you turn off reactivation lock?

hi everybody
Friend of mine gave me this phone with the unlock code.
The phone keeps going to the hands-free activation screen ( which fails of course because it's either got no sim or a T-Mobile SIM in there)
Someone said it said enter double hashtag and then the msl code followed by hashtag
That just takes me to a screen where I can enter the "NAM info" T-Mobile's nearly worthless support told me to put my phone number into both the mdn and msid fields. Obviously this didn't work.
I tried the double hashtags 72786 hashtag to reset the radios, no joy. But before it should no signal at all any of the time where is now it does seem to have a connection to Sprint.
I found other sites that said that I need to enter the UICC unlock code, tapping that option or update PRL or pretty much anything else on that settings screen, just kicks open the hands-free activation screen again, before I did the step above to reset the radio I kept getting a 407 error.
Something that's probably complicating this whole process is that this phone did have a custom ROM on it and still has TWRP on it. The custom rom was wiped and I grabbed the Android 6.0 debloated stock ROM from on here and installed that to get this thing unlocked.
I'm open to trying custom roms but I need one that's going to be as stable as stock.
I would appreciate any help you guys could provide I've wasted probably about six hours on Google already. I got a lot of what appears to be pretty low-level information off of the hands-free activation menu though I've posted those photos.

One thing I find curious as you can see in one of the images that says that the Linux version is 4.0.4. But the ROM is definitely a 6.0. I'm an IT guy but I'm pretty novice when it comes to cell phones, is this something to do with the kernal?
I've been trying to download Dr ketan mod but while there's instructions for the p varient, there's no ROM download for the P version of the note 4 on his site.

I can't really help you but I can give you some info.
For 1, to unlock it correctly, you should be on stock firmware. You use Odin for that. There are plenty threads here that explain how.
2. Even if you do go stock. I've seen multiple people that can't unlock this phone, even with sprint help. It's like they don't care.
But yes, I've always heard what unlocks the phone is the uicc unlock code. But good luck getting it or getting it to work.
3. I wasted a week trying to figure out unlocking my phone. Not because of $, just wanted to try to figure it out. But i said, F#&k it. And paid Idone apps to unlock mine. Worked flawless!
Good luck!
As far as roms. There are plenty that work great.

Looks like I broke the second half for the quote mechanism, sorry when u load up Odin, will it find the stock round that's supposed to be on this phone? Cuz I got what I thought was a closest to it.
The phone still has trwp recovery on it tho, and it knows it's custom.
I got the msl code, seems to work. My fear is that the problem is on the phone and not the carrier end.
How would a non stock ROM impact this process assuming that everything was kosher on the carrier end?

I don't understand. Does your phone work with service? Did it ever have service? If it had service and now it don't, then you did something.
All i meant. Is if your trying to unlock your phone. It's best from stock.

Sorry, for the newbness. I have tried to read through some threads to get an idea of the correct way to do this. Of course, first time trying to flash a device. I have a Galaxy S9+ 965U. Purchased the phone from U.s. Cellular, but I am switching to a Verizon provider. So if I am reading correct, I am going to want to flash the U1 version onto my device, then I should be able to find a Verizon O.s. here and run that? Or what are my options if using Verizon for service? Sorry if it seems easy to some, but maybe my ADD keeps some of the descriptions/ instructions from sinking in fully. I have seen the thread here on U1 to U conversion, but I haven't seen the Verizon O.s. or do I need to run the Verizon O.s. with Verizon service?

I'm on the same boat, I have an Tmobile S9 and I want to use Verizon on it. Someone please help.
I'm not sure if we have to use a Verizon O.s., or maybe a custom flash from a private party. But honestly I wouldn't know which custom flash would be good or work good without being buggy. If anyone has any input, it would be appreciated.
