This paragraph is intended to provoke thought and is not necessary for answering questions about ROMs, so skip past it if you want: When it comes to cell phones, I like freedom and options. Google has been criticized by the Electronic Frontier Foundation for censoring AdBlock from Google Play. The EFF also levied a criticism for Google doing away with AppOpps. I remember separately having a YouTube account and Gmail account, gracefully using both. After Google bought YouTube, the two were merged without any choice to keep them separate. Then Google+ was introduced and using YouTube became annoying without accepting a Google+ account. Eventually they shoved it down the throats of YouTube users and leaving a YouTube comment was blocked without creating a Google+ account. When you sign up for a new Google account, your searches are saved by default in the history unless you manually turn the feature off. Of course, the NSA leaks raise more questions. Google offers many efficient, valuable, convenient services but I want to maximize my freedom.
Some facts about my phone situation: I own the LTE-capable Samsung Galaxy S III SGH-T999L. It is rooted. It is locked to T-Mobile. Titanium Backup Pro, Root Explorer, and Terminal Emulator are installed. I backed up Knox with Titanium Backup and (as far as I can tell) uninstalled it. To my knowledge, there is no backup whatsoever of my operating system in its current state or original state. I do not know how to back everything up before I try flashing a ROM. As much as I want a non-Google ROM, I am unwilling to sacrifice LTE.
I never flashed a ROM before. Where do I begin if I want to do this safely and correctly? Is there a safe, stable, non-Google ROM tested to work specifically with the SGH-T999L and fully maintain LTE capabilities? Will I have to sacrifice anything major if I flash a ROM? Can flashing a ROM significantly affect battery life? Are there any important considerations you think I should know about before trying to flash a ROM (besides how to do it properly)?
Thanks.
There's no such thing as a non-Google ROM on an Android phone. Not and useable as a phone, at least.
And yes, flashing a custom ROM can significantly improve your battery life, especially with a custom kernel, although just flashing a custom kernel on a rooted but completely stock phone can help, too.
I don't have first hand experience with they model phone so I can't answer your other questions. Good luck!

I did not know that all Android operating systems were by Google. Thanks for letting me know.
When it comes to corporate tracking (e.g. collecting usage statistics in the background) or restricting phone options, is there any advantage that a custom ROM has over a stock ROM without bloatware?

Not really, if you're worried about all that stuff you might as well get a burner flip phone. Anything you do on the internet can be tracked in some way. But there is an all called Who's Tracking? and many similar ones.

Happy day,
I've spent some time learning about my phone, messing around a little bit with what comes stock and such. One thing that keeps nagging me is how much of my data the various programs in Google Play want. What business is it of a game-maker to want my contact list? Why should a ringtone or wallpaper or recipe or any other program require that I surrender my data? Sure, they want mine for billing or marketing, that's fine, but why my contacts?
Here's one. A company called Droidhen makes a game. They require the ability to read phone status and ID, which gives them info about me and the number a call is connected to. Why do they require knowing the number to which I am connected?
The list goes on, of course, and maybe I misunderstand Google's warnings about what these companies want, but perhaps not?
Which brings me to the reason for my post. I would like to be able to use and pay for programs that do not access all of my accounts, take my data, track me and such. If I use a program that needs to know my location in order for it to work, that's fine. But in the end, I want to limit what companies can seize.
Will rooting provide me with access to the privacy controls I want?
You could try using this, it's a port of how MIUI handles superuser and permissions. I have not used it myself but it seems like it has the features you are looking for by managing what permission's an app is allowed to have.

For the droidhen game, it needs the ability to read your phone status and Id so if someone calls, it will go to the phone call I think. I havent looked into it much but theres options out there

Seems like Deb is more or less unsupported by devs. Seen multiple people start working on it only to drop support because they don't have time.
Am I surprised? Nope. It wasn't going to be that popular anyway. Should I get a flo instead? I use wifi a lot at home but not at work. I am using T-Mo for LTE since Verizon are assbags about it as well which kills popularity of it even more.
How should I go about selling my Deb... if anyone wants it at this point?
Great answer.
I am wondering more or less the same thing.
Does anybody know any issues with flashing ROMs or kernels meant for the FLO on the DEB? I am wondering if it is just the cellular connectivity that is affected. So can I use any of the stuff intended for the FLO on the DEB with only the loss of the cellular or are there other issues as well? If so, it would be cool to restore a nandroid to restore a DEB ROM if I really needed cellular, and restore a FLO ROM if I wanted to play with the latest software.
*EDIT* Gotta say though. CM 10.2 nightly is working great. I have CIFS support, USB Audio, as well as the "empty app mounted directories fix".
I will try Xposed and Tablet UI later.

Curious about this myself. Anyone have a good answer?
Possible scenarios:
A) It won't work at all no matter what (find this hard to believe)
B) It just works, but no mobile data.
C) It would work, but requires minor porting or conversion and will not be able to have data.
D) It would work with WiFi and Data with minor porting post-compile.
E) It would work, but requires pre-compile porting (see no reason why this wouldn't be the case).
F) It would brick your device.
Scenarios BCD aren't all that bad. If porting could be done, it would be curious to see what all is required. Scenario E would work for those willing to do a little source massage, so long as you can grab a full source (not all Roms seem to provide this).
Scenario F should be warned about if the case. However, if it were true I suspect you'd see more "I bricked my LTE Nexus 7!!!" posts.
Honestly, I don't see why you should. I've built experimental roms for it straight from multiple sources and it's no different from the flo in the aspect of ROM compiling. Kernels has been a hit or miss due to idk. I'm currently running stock with fauxs kernel. I've built ROMs for numerous devices and in the end I can truly say. Its just due to laziness that some/most don't support it. Whatever that reason they choose not to release a build is their own. I think the main reason is that not many people who dev own the deb version. You gotta remember the nexus line is ever changing.

Hey guys,
I have a couple of questions,
1. What are some of the best roms for my Sprint s3, im curruntly running Stock kitkiat 4.4.2 rooted. I have tried Pac Rom but i find it over heats my phone for whatever reason, Ive also tried Vanir, hellfire, Cynoginmod( also Nightly), Im trying to find one that wont over heat my phone and also one that i can remove the data bars on top basically make my phone wifi only,
2. Is there any way to possible get Flash player working on kit kat 4.4.2 on my s3 i read some things about different ways.
3. Is there any other good Cracked App stores other then Aptoide, Blackmart, appcake. Or is there a hacked version of google play store where all aps or in app purchases are free besides using freedom since freedom is not legal in our country. i already use Freedom with market unlocker to be able to use freedom. I miss my iphone for this reason because it was so easy to find awesome cracked app store or free in app purchases apps,
4. Is there a way to easily Flash my phone to another career like something i can flash to do it for me something like what iPhone had which was called sam Prefs.

Hi all
As you can see in the image, the Samsung Notes app is running wayyyy too much in the background, eating up my battery. This is even after I make sure the app is closed after using it!

I tried to set the app to go to sleep, but this was not possible as it is a Samsung dedicated app. I couldn't even optimise this app either. The only solution seems to be "force stop"ing this app, which I prefer not to do as I use the app once or twice a day to write notes.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to stop this app from running so much in the background?
Possibly notes is trying to continuously update to the Samsung Cloud?

Thanks for your response, but nope - I've disabled everything from being able to backup to Samsung cloud
Personally I don't understand why the applications stay active in memory after I stop using them, since I can't tell the difference even if my life depend on it if apps is cold started, or starts from memory, either way it starts almost instantly, so yes I would definitely force stop it myself, especially that I feel this "feature" of all apps staying in memory is more for advertising purposes than anything else, especially now. There is a switch to either put app to sleep or not allow background activity, one is under apps inside battery menu, another under battery usage menu. I'm trying to limit all apps from running in the background, except for map which needs to be constantly updated for traffic, but what a pain in the neck it is, there are over 400 apps on the damn phone.

Disable or uninstall this trashware.
Switch to an app that stores your notes in a standard format such as text files etc so you can always read them in the future.
Finding a good free office app is now almost impossible for Android. I use an old copy of Kingsoft WPS Office. Today's newer versions though are pure crap unless you pay, pay, pay.
Used Samsung Notes on my S4 but restoring them became a tedious nightmare when I migrated to the Note 10 platform because Samsang "upgraded" their app so it wasn't backwards compatible with their older version's note files.
Don't trust Samsung with any data you care about; they will make it obsolete by their time table not yours.
Thanks for nothing Samsung... feel the wuv for the rabid gerbils in the box.
First day on new Samsung Galaxy S21 FE phone. After some hours, I noticed that I don't have a search features in Settings anymore. It was there as expected on Android, but now it simply disappears. Any idea what can change this behavior?
Additional info - I made debloat as instructed in XDA forum for Samsung phones. Maybe there was something which could damage it?
You debloated it Dependencies...
Be very careful what you disable especially with the smaller Samsung system apps. Some are useless bloatware, but many just sit there unless needed.
In Android 10 Samsung added dozens of small system apps that preserve the UI functionality and appearance. Android 9 on the same device didn't have them but both look and behave nearly identically.
The "damage" isn't permanent. Either undo the edit(s) that caused it or a factory reset will purge all the edits and revert it to factory default settings.
Tnx.
I didn't find a solution, so I made a factory reset.
Now it works again (until my next debloat session ).
I use a package disabler and block about 80.
Some of the lists I've seen are way more than I would do. Things like that settings search feature which can be useful at times.
I poked around a bit, this is the app that provides that service.

I really appreciate you making this comment even after OP had resolved their issue. It's very helpful for future people who end up searching Google for the same issue, like I just did, haha.
I found my search function missing as well and I figured it had to have been dependent on an app I disabled, but I couldn't imagine what app. Thankfully I landed here and your comment saved me a lot of time I would have spent scouring up and down the apps list.
Funny thing is I don't remember ever even seeing the Settings Suggestions app when I was debloating. I definitely would have figured out what that was for and not disabled it. I used the app "ADB AppControl" on Windows and I did run the "Basic" (lowest level) Debloat wizard, assuming it wouldn't disable anything so essential, but I'm certain that's what must have disabled it. So there's a warning for anyone else, always be careful with one-click solutions! Hopefully this helps anyone else who ends up here on another future Google search.
