Im just using the stock gs3 from tmo.
If you all would be so kind as to give me a few pros/cons to root for this phone.
Im am not concerned about voiding warranty.
Im wondering if there are any immediate perks to being rooted:
like bypassing tmo's restriction on wifi hotspot; to my knowledge, tmo now only lets their customers use wifi hotspot with the 5gb plan and not the 2gb plan.

I'm short on time right now but if you root your phone you can download an app called wifi tether, which requires root permission, then you use your phone data on your laptop all you want.
With a rooted phone you can also download new roms that people develope and try out a lot of new functions before the official update.
You are more exposed to security risks once you root your phone I believe, but just don't install apps from random sites
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I really see no cons to rooting except warranty which isn't really true. If you study the warranty and know your stuff you can verbally defend your right to root and not lose warranty.
Pros: everything.
I do not see the point of having a non rooted android phone with some sort of recovery.. Custom ROMs, themes and titanium backup for all your apps
here ya go http://bit.ly/UUaCxg
Don't do it and please leave.
All you need to do is read over all the great threads around here to form a decision.

Ive rooted before and I have explored almost all the developers' work on other phones.
Just to clarify im asking about this phone specifically. The first guy already answered my biggest concern about the wifi hotspot.
If you guys can think of any other immediate perks like: unwarranted tmo restrictions that are resolved via rooting this phone.
I will never go back to bone stock gs3 because I would miss out on _________.
Im already aware of the capability to "pirate" most paid apps.
Also there's the possibility of finding a more buttery smooth rom than the stock rom of course.
Extra battery life via underclocking with an aftermarket kernel is obviously another big one, but things im looking for are things on the same level as how rooting allows me to bypass the wifi hotspot limitations that tmo put on the 2gb plan
Sent from SCH-T999
I'd say that if you just want a phone to work and don't get about any extra stuff, don't bother rooting it. If you're interested in modifying your phone and basically being capable of doing A LOT more than you can with stock, root it.
Just make sure you do a lot of research before you do anything. I read hundreds of pages on this forum before I did anything just in case.
Adfree app, which requires root, changes everything for the better.
I mainly use my root for ad block, titanium backup, and maybe delete gsiff_daemon (didn't delete it yet because it hasn't tried to kill my battery yet). Something else that could be useful maybe GMD gesture control
There are a lot of nice apps that require root. Even if you don't have any apps in mind now, at some point you'll probably come across one you want and you'll kick yourself for not having gotten around to rooting yet. Besides tripping the flash counter and warranties the only con is the possibility of failing miserably and bricking your phone, but as long as you follow instructions you'll be fine.
ability to flash different radios for better/worse signal.
ability to flash different roms for better/worse battery life.
I have rooted every Android I have had in the Nexus One/Mytouch4G/HTC Amaze....and have had my s3 for a good 4 months now and have yet to root it.
Just meets my current needs and runs awesome without root.
I may one day, but honestly don't have the time or want right now.

Jesse im in the same boat, the phone is already pretty snappy...
Im considering rooting it though to bypass tmo's restriction on wifi hotspot, and to be able to use google voice as my voicemail.
When I finally do root ill be looking forward to checking out the endless development for this popular device

Sent it back as I installed root and custom rom - managed to lose imei etc (didn't backup)
Even after the noble efforts of some kind forum members I could not save the phone
They have sent me a new note n7100.
I want to root it and back it up only. I can live with stock samsung rom
I don't even need cwm installed as the root is for a few certain apps and a cheeky overclock.
Is it safe enough to just root? Will I be able to unroot and update my stock rom?
Thanks

There are stickies everywhere with information on rooting. Only you will know when you are comfortable enough to root your phone. If you are not comfortable doing it, , don't. Read and study more until you are not longer afraid.

I just picked up the Note 2 yesterday and looking to do the same . I came from the vibrant which had no flash counter or normal rom check . From what I've read cf root is most likely what I'm going to use but I'm not very familiar with this flash counter stuff . I'm on the jump plan and plan on upgrading in 6 months and I don't want my upgrade to be rejected due to flash counter and so on . An help is much appreciated .

I kinda think you have to root for firewalls, avast anti theft, no ads, also directory bind and increased sound Volume.
The root is pretty simple and there are enough guides to get your counter reset and indeed lose the modified tag. It worked for me.
Dr ketan has a few real good guides. Don't be scared. I've rooted four of these and now I've a custom rom too.

Rooting is a piece of cake. It's finding a custom Rom that suites you which is the real problem. It's like a jungle out there for us noobs.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If the gains you perceive from rooting (custom ROMs, Tasker/Titanium, nandroids, etc) outweigh your risk-aversion to possibly losing your warranty or damaging your phone, then don't do it.
Having said that, if you follow all the instructions carefully and understand the process, you should have no issues. I've rooted the last half dozen phones/tablets and it's been smooth sailing.
After losing my IMEI it took me almost 3 weeks to find a solution to my uprooted device, now that I regained the IMEI back I rooted it for the first time, installed the triangle away and returned the status to normal the counter was already 0. I've also noticed that the OTA update is functioning properly.
Found the correct thread and files and I've successfully rooted and have the unlimited multi window mod .

Ok. Let me push you over the edge. I had never considered rooting a phone until I got the note 3. I decided to root so I could customise the pen widow ap. It has been the best thing that I have ever done with a phone. Yes the note 3 can be a little temperamental when attempting to flash ROMS but there is a lot of support and if you need help pm me and I will help to get you going. Going to put in a plug here for my ROM of choice. JEDI ROMS are good but I have not found a better setup so far than X-Note. Any questions about it and I will be glad to answer. Don't let other people's problems change your mind about rooting. This is a must root device.
Thanks mate, is that compatible with tmobile. I checked thread and it looks pretty sweet. I liked the air command themes. I got some questions, I'll pm you

Totally worth it man. Very easy to do as well. Not only the customizations mentioned above but also aosp roms and such are wonderful. W03 Slim is fantastic!
It's so easy to unroot the phone and go back to stock, so you might as well give it a shot and see how you like it. Unless you're completely incompetent then nothing too bad should come out of it. I personally like having my phone rooted without any custom ROMS. But that's just me, a lot of others would say different.
I am hoping to unlock SIM for a t-mobile phone / region unlock. I understand I can do that by rooting it. Can I root and leave it with stock firmware, and will I get OTA updates? Also, is it safe and easy to unroot. IF it's unrooted, will they know it was rooted (i.e. warranty void?)
Thanks
Rooting doesn't void warranty either. I was skeptical too. Rooted on 4.3 and loving it.

Waiting for my phone. Hopefully it's still on 4.3. So can someone confirm I understand everything all this correctly.
I can root with Root de vega (if still on older firmware) and it won't trigger anything to void warranty. I just want to use region unlock to try unlock the sim/region. After that...I can either unroot? or keep it root. IF I keep it root...but I want the latest firmware (not custom)...is that possible? I've seen video about flashing the firmware from Sammobile with Odin which brings it back to unroot stock...but what if I just want the newest stock firmware without unrooting? Do I need some other recovery and flash something else? Will putting in different recovery cuz the warranty tracker to trigger?
I did search with both the site and Google and couldn't find anything. Has anyone rooted the AT&T Galaxy Tab 8.4 SM-T707 yet? I see lots of other models but not this one. Thanks in advance!
Nope. No root for att model
If you just bought it and were planning to mod it, return it. I made the mistake of getting one, and learned about the root and custom roms situation too late.
Can't afford one without the ATT next program so I guess I get to wait until they do root it. Oh well. Thing is frickin sweet.
Root or not it's a awesome tablet. Especially with that screen! Lol. But once you do get it rooted and debloated or flash a custom rom. You'll see how well it truely performs. Got my fingers crossed for you getting a root soon man
SM-T707D, a variant of Galaxy Tab S 8.4 for Japanese carrier NTT-Docomo, can be rooted with using cf-auto-root modified by Japanese dev Tesuri. (not myself)
I have no idea if it works also for SM-T707A, but you guys can download the modified cf-auto-root from the link in the following tweet.
https://twitter.com/tesuri/status/547412357031292930?s=09
FYI) CPU of SM-T707D is Snapdragon 800. 'SC-03G' in the tweet is carrier's device name for SM-T707D.
Sorry, I've misunderstood. T707A's chipset is not S800 but Exynos. Plaese do NOT try to use the cf-auto-root above.

Still no root?
Count me in with the others who bought this without realizing it wouldn't have TWRP or custom kernel or CM12 like the WiFi model. Ugh.
The problem is ATT lock their bootloaders. Locked bootloaders mean only official firmware can be flashed.
Some will just reject it, some will brick your device.

Why does it need confirming? Just try it.
Kingroot worked on my T707A, but now the Daydream screensaver never kicks in. I guess it's a decent trade off for being able to install Adaway, Xposed Mods and full SD card access.
Edit:
I uninstalled the KingMaster application and now Daydream works fine. Seems that KingMaster app tries to close certain things down to save battery.
