I just downloaded the 2.2.1 Froyo 34.4.9 update.zip and am really anxious to give it a try. I'm kinda new at this, I have a rooted Defy (Superoneclick method) and I did root and flash a custom ROM on my CliqXT (adb push method) and have both working good. So, I'm not completely dumb to this stuff but I read in a couple of the thread posts that some people have had issues with 3G and WiFi after installing this update. I do believe that troubleshooting that stuff might be a bit over my head so I'm just wondering if this has been an on going issue or if its rare? If I follow the posted instructions correctly do I have a good chance at ending up with a trouble free version of Foyo? FYI...My Defy is Rooted (factory ROM) 2.1 update1 with Blur Version 3.6.36 and I have a Nandroid backup.
I wasnt sure where to post my previous question since I found the info in the Dev's forums, but I guess because I haven't posted at least 10 times I wasn't allowed to post my question in the Dev's thread I got the .zip from. Funny because I saw a post from someone that didnt even know what "root of the sd card" was but they're allowed to post in that thread. Not trying to offend anyone just making an observation. New to this site so I'm just learning the rules.
I dont think you should be so anxious I upgraded today and the only issue was that it was initially a bit slow but after a few minutes everything was zipping along perfectly.. My 3g is just fine and my Wifi as well. I was able to reroot using superoneclick (update undoes root), and overclock using milestone-overclock app.
I was getting near a near 1000 quadrant score at stock b4 overclocking and got in the 1400's after overclocking to 1200mhz @80.
If you follow the directions it should work no prob.. Welcome to froyo
Those problems you mentioned only apply to the leaked FroYo SBF files. And it only affects those that flash the SBFs to phones that are not specific to that SBF.
I flashed the leaked FroYo for T-Mo USA on my T-Mo USA Defy and had no problems.
You should be fine with the official update.
If you can, please make a nandroid after you update and post it here...
Thanks!

On the Moto forum an Admin is asking for any issues discovered by those who have updated to 2.2. Not sure if this means they're still trying to sort it.

"Common Folks?" Wow, I hope that wasnt supposed to be some kind of insult. You should remember something, its us "common folks" that have the clean Nandroid backups the Dev's seem to be needing, its us "Common Folks" that flash the custom ROMS and donate to the Dev's in appreciation for their hard work. But if us "common folk" aren't welcome here then I can leave because the last time I checked I was able to root and install custom ROMS on both of my phones without your help. Not bad for "common folk"
Lol you took my comment way out of context. I'm not a dev. I don't even have a defy. I'm about intermediate android when it comes to roms, flashing, etc.
I simply meant that, until now, you needed to root, install custom os, etc to get froyo.

Ok, sorry about that. The official OTA 2.2 release was done for a limited time a month or so ago (supportforums.motorola.com/thread/44255?start=0&tstart=0). I have a rooted Defy with custom recovery and download the update.zip from the Dev's forum. Sorry if I wasnt clear about that.
Hi! So what about that nandroid?

I havent installed the OS yet. I got a little more research to do but once I do it I'll be happy to provide the Nandroid. I have a couple questions about the current status of my SD card that I wanna look into first. Hopefully i'll be running Froyo in the next day or so and will provide the Nandroid ASAP.
I would like to know if I have Clockwork Recovery installed, can I still flash the official rom using the Update.zip file on SD card? Thanks.
Just want to be clear on the Nandroid backup. Are you asking me to make the backup right after flashing new OS before anything else gets installed? Basically a stock Defy running Froyo? If you give me details on what you're wanting it'll help alot with my learning process and it'll help make sure that you get what you're looking for. And does a Nandroid backup contain all info thats on SD card?
Yes, a Nandroid right after you update so that none of your data is on there and everything is stock.
Nope, the contents of the SD Card are not included when you make a Nandroid...
Thank you, your help is appreciated!

Do you have any suggestions as to how to backup? I rooted the official (beta) tmous 2.2 with superoneclick (Z4 didn't work), and tried to install tenfars recovery module, however, it won't work with this rom. Is there another one that you suggest to use?
Try this one: kb7sqi's Recovery
Also, have you tried disabling USB Debugging before booting to recovery on Tenfar's Recovery?
You'll have to do that for it to work. The same goes for kb7sqi's Recovery.
Nasty bug or something...

this version doesn't work on this rom either...and the updated version was pulled.
Replied to your PM.
You can use Tenfar's and even kb7's old one. They both work.
You just need to disable USB Debugging before rebooting to recovery...

hey guys, im new to the forums and a recent convert from IOS
now i have a desire hd software build no 1.32.707.5
what would the best way going about rooting this be?
the phone is great but has a lot of bloatware i want to get rid of asap
not sure bout putting a new rom on yet
ive been tryin to read up as best as possible but getting conflicting reports from every thread i seem to open
with this version would i have to downgrade before i root?
can anyone point me to a straightforward huide to rooting and the software i would need?
thanks a mil
Hi and welcome to xda.
Your software version is good for rooting, no need to downgrade.
To root you should follow THIS guide as it contains everything you need to do.
Just follow the guide until you achieve ENG S-OFF.
thanks a million
will try it out this afternoon!!
Good luck! You won't regret it!
ok guys
i was sucessful in rooting my DHD
now what course of action could i take from here?
whats would be good apps to install now and how do i go about removing the more stubborn apps i dont want?
also what would be a good rom to install at this point if i so choose without having to do a radio flash
Downgrade or not?
There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice about whether downgrading from is necessary. Here they say not, other guides says its necessary to shift down to 1.32.
Is it necessary or not? Jhonnieblue did you downgrade?
Try Cyanogenmod7-RC2

Radio is separated by ROM, you can try later new radios, to test how much your "new" phone juices in your specific mobile carrier.
In my case, I installed CM7-RC2 ROM and it works just fine with 26.04.03.30 radio on Orange Romania. Keep in mind that you must have S-OFF enabled, otherwise you can't revert to an old radio. And make sure you have the right radio for your device or you will turn it into a brick

If you choose CyanogenMod 7-RC2 first, install ROM Manager. Since I can't post links for the moment, try to google for the full guide of rooting DHD on wikipedia for the official steps (or find the same link on cyanogenmod official site)
Then Google Apps (or gapps), the latest version for your device.
Then any app from the market, for me the first was Market Enabler, since in Romania Android Market was not available at the time. And still it is...unfortunately.
Silly prob, just developed from nowhere. If my wifi is either switched off manually or by itself it cannot be switch on again. Found a painful way around it and that is to reboot into recovery, delete dalvik cache and cache, reboot again and its there. Obviously this is annoying process so am hoping some one has experienced this same issue an found a fix. Or someone knows whats happening.. thx:good:
Can you post the output of fastboot getvar all (removing the IMEI and serial number) and also which ROM you're using?
Because Lollipop requires the new firmware so if you're now using a Lollipop ROM it's more than likely your issue (you've not mentioned either so I'm making assumptions but because of how rude you have been I don't really care). Next time I won't bother but trust me, I wouldn't have if I didn't know what I was on about. Have fun fixing it yourself

Exactly what eddy says. You came here for help.....we didnt ask you to come here.
And you seem to know which advice will be given, if you are that good why don't you write in the OP what you already know about the issue and provide logcats so we can dig through them to spot some error maybe. Ever thought about that ?
If i were you i would say : thanks for the reply eddy but ...... etc etc. This kind of "a developer is qualified to help" attitude won't get you far here. At the end of the day it's not our device that needs a fix.
Happy fixing
Moderator Information,
Thread has been cleaned. For info the older firmware does not work with the newest versions of Android. This is because the wifi drivers were changed in the newer version. The only fix is to update the firmware, this can be done via s-off methods or going back to stock and flashing the latest OTA.
Here is a good link for updating the firmware:
[2015.02.08][GUIDE] FUU and Firmware flashing
Im still abit new to XDA so forgive me for any rookie errors. Just like Veroby, I am also having wifi issues, I am aware that you need to upgrade firmware to upgrade to Lollipop but since I'm S-On only option for me is to revert to stock using a Stock Nandroid Back up of my cid (OPTUS001) from Mr Hofs thread, to go back to stock, which worked fine, but after doing 1 OTA update, my wifi will stop working! Same as what veroby describes. Help us out guys! Will provide information if required.

Not going to respond further here.
Ok guys i roamed a lot on the internet trying to get a way to fix a not so common problem(but yes a major problem) on the htc desire 816. Finally resolved mine and hope that it will solve yours too (note that having a super CID phone is a plus point, i have that, proceed at your own risk) which means my phone is not region locked
Please note this may lead you to bricking your phone if not done properly.
UPDATEDFollow the steps below:-
Download your version of stock ROM.zip or RUU.exe From HERE
If your one is in .exe format then simply connect your phone and run RUU.exe and don't follow the steps given below
Rename the file to 0P9CIMG only(dont change extension .zip)
Place the file in your Ext. SD Card
Turn off your phone
Enter into bootloader by pressing VOLUME DOWN + POWER
Your phone will automatically recognize the zip file and start flashing it
Be Patient
Delete the zip after your phone has succesfully returned to stock.
HIT THANKS IF I HELPED :good::fingers-crossed::good:
First off, thanks for the post I've been searching this everywhere. Unfortunately though while updating, I got this error message in recovery: "Package expects build fingerprint of htc/htc_asia_wwe/htc_a5dwg:4.4.2/KOT49H/37"a number"983.1:user/release-keys or htc/htc_asia/wwe/htc_a5dwg:5.0.2/LRX22G/510432.1:user/release-keys; this device has htc/htc_europe/htc_a5dug:5.0.2?LRX22G/510432.1:user/release-keys". I'm assuming 'a5dwg' means my phone is a asia wwe model and thus not compatible with the european recovery.img I downloaded from your given link? If so, where can I find a stock recovery.img for asia wwe model? (My phone is a Desire 816 dual sim with 4.4.2 kitkat, sense 6, software number 1.58.707.1, kernel 3.4.0-g4ff7e8c and baseband version 1.31.50.0624_2) Does anybody else know?
I'll post that soon if I find it

To tell someone, that doesn't even know the correct way to flash a device, to get S-OFF (which completely removes ALL security, so the flashing won't stop, even if it is a bad flash) is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! I know experienced users that bricked their phone gaining S-OFF and attempting to flash a file, they THOUGHT were for their device. So imagine an unexperienced user trying the same.
Also, maybe you should tell the user that S-OFF costs real money. You need to buy the sunshine app or for MTK variants a dongle to make it work.
It's really nice of you posting this tutorial, but please consider that most of the users in this section of the forums are inexperienced and seek help.

Yes I do know that but you must also know that there is no other simple method right now to gain S-OFF without the sunshine app which costs 25$ at the time.
I know that they can end up doing it wrong, but the files that i've stated are stock roms or ruu files and are not that much of a problem if they know which one to look out for.
I should have told them that. Sorry my bad.

On December 27th you posted here that your phone was pure stock and you couldn't update. Now a few months later your phone is now set to S off which by the way requires you to preroot your phone first and now your set to SuperCID which takes even more knowledge to do through ADB/fastboot properly but your still "new" here? Now your saying your phone isn't even rooted and after asking the OP for his "supposed" help(which none of which is documented anywhere here with interactions back and forth between the two of you) your thanking him for what exactly? Coming across the one other "new" guy with an S off and SuperCID set device? This is all sounding very fishy and "real" people are being hurt here who don't have S off and SuperCID and are soft bricking their phones left and right from what I'm reading here. Shame on both of you (OP) for giving such incomplete advice and having more unlocked phone's then the rest and not even sharing your back and forth discussions here in XDA to inform the rest. I think you should consider reading my post where I've clearly mentioned "this may lead you to bricking your phone if not done properly & proceed at your own risk"
Nukaru has also already stated in a post above what i should have told regarding s-off and the info i provided.
If you notice i have asked people to post their specific problem in detail and also i had sent them PM's asking them the details of the problem. I've helped them as far as i could. I'm not a developer or someone with great knowledge in these things but what i've written is from my experience of the problems that i faced and how to resolve them.
The original post was completely different from what it is now which is much easier to do. People who were following the steps in the earlier version of my original post faced those problems that you are talking about.
I appreciate your criticism for this post and i also say that what you are saying is not completely incorrect.I'll soon edit this thread to give proper info to people in need.

I genuinely appreciate your response and your desire to help people I'm sure is genuine but I did read your whole post and every single persons response one after the other. I learned that from my first days here at XDA that sometimes the responses gave me more info than the original post. Plus I'm OCD when it comes to reading. I also am not an expert/dev and have just learned by reading obsessively and dealing with my own device's issues over the years so I'm not saying you don't have the right to help here( we need more people to help.)
What I am saying is maybe you should be "reading" more tutorials from more experienced people and devs to get your information gaps fixed better before "writing" more tutorials that are (and I've read all of them to be fair) incomplete with dead links and more emoji filled than correctly filled. PMing is great and it's commendable that you are taking that much effort into helping people but that doesn't help the next guy that comes across this forum after you've gone to sleep and wants to get the information you and the other person communicated. I guess if the mods are fine with it I have to be but my advice is to read some of the better written tutorials and support forums then compare them to yours and you'll pretty much see what I'm talking about and if you don't then none of what I'm saying matters anyway. Good luck to you and I mean that.

Thanks you understood me really well. Appreciate your advice, working on it.
I have a problem with my HTC one M8 At&t (It's unlocked to any provider) it's also rooted so if you can help me either unroot it or add a ROM that would be so helpful.
Well the problem with my phone is.
1) It won't update to 6.0 its stuck on 5.0.2
2) ROMS won't install at all. Maybe because it doesn't have TWRP (I don't know where to get that)
3) The phone is S-on relocked and it says "This device has been tampered' then a warning
I asked HTC and they didn't help at all. I asked people that I know but they are IOS.
So this is the last resort. I was recommended by a friend to ask you wonderful people. I mean i have some knowledge but it don't have anyone to show me the ropes of how to do it. But please if you guys can help add link with steps.
Thank you and have a good day dudes.

I'd suggest you watch this video to install TWRP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HWj_1KHbuY
And then I'd also recommend installing CM13 since it's really stable. It can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc...m-cyanogenmod-13-0-nightlies-htc-one-t3256696

1. If it is AT&T, it won't update on non-AT&T network.
2. Unlock bootloader and install TWRP
3. The phone was unlocked before and now it is relocked.
Post fastboot getvar all without serial & imei no to confirm which device variant that you have and what to do with it.

I would suggest the OP not follow that video. Followed literally, it will not only direct the OP to install a horribly obsolete version of TWRP, but also one that is not intended for his version of the M8. The "wlv" version TWRP in the video is for Verizon, and would install TWRP to the wrong partition, maybe even brick the phone. TWRP has since been updated and unified to identify the M8 version, and install on the proper partition accordingly; but such was not the case at the time the video was created.
This is one of the main reasons I don't recommend rooting by watching YouTube videos. They aren't detailed enough to point out all the nuances and potential pitfalls of the process. They just spoonfeed enough knowledge to you get you into big trouble, without any knowledge or skills to get you out of that hole.
Also, the random "root" website referenced in the video doesn't appear to have any downloadable files any longer, anyway. At least not that I can find, upon examination. So if the OP that route, they would have hit a dead end. I also personally don't recommend such "root" websites, as they almost always just steal content from XDA, without giving proper credit.
All the info the OP needs is right here on XDA. An excellent guide for unlocking the bootloader and installing custom recovery is here. Although the guide is dated (hard for anything for this phone to not be dated at this point - it is over 2 years old) and I have the following additional advice:
- HTC drivers on the guide are dated. But if you plug the phone into your PC, it should auto-install HTC Sync and the required drivers
- You can get TWRP right from the source here. I'm not sure if your existing firmware will play well with the latest version (TWRP 3.0.x), but I'm pretty sure version 2.8.7.0 will work well (and known to be very stable).
- Only need to follow the guide through "ROOTING YOUR DEVICE" Step 8, that is unlocking the bootloader and installing custom recovery (don't flash SuperSU). From there, get the desired custom ROM on the phone, boot into TWRP, backup the current stock ROM, then do default wipe (data, cache, Dalvik) in TWRP and flash the ROM.

An alternative would be to flash the Marshmallow RUU to update to full stock image. But in order to do so, the OP will have to update to Marshmallow firmware (which requires some knowledge of using fastboot) and then run the Marshmallow RUU. The RUU in listed on my AT&T M8 Index thread here (along with a lot of other useful info), with the info/link for flashing firmware highlighted in red text.
