Wiping data reboots phone - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

rom: 4.4 aokp
kernal: ktoonz
Hey guys, i need some help. i encountered a strange problem when flashing to a new rom from 4.4 AOKP. Before the problem happened, when entering recovery, it said:
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
i wiped cache, reboot phone and it was gone. however, when proceeding to wipe data to flash new rom, the phone would reboot. managed to somehow fix the problem by restoring to a previous backup. backup went through but rebooted during data restore. everything was broken so went back to recovery and wiped data. this time wipe data worked, everything seemed fine so i thought. So i flashed cm11 m6, realized it was too bare for me, so i once again go back to recovery and wiped data to flash a new rom. it happened again. phone rebooted during data wipe.
im guessing i will have to odin back to stock to fix this problem. Last time i needed to use odin was at md5, so im a little rusty on some of the information about this knox thing. Using root66 version of UVUENC2 wont cause any problem for me correct? i will be able to still flash custom roms correct? odining to stock will not wipe my internal sd card correct?

Odin will not wipe any user data. But if coming from cm/aosp you will have to factory reset. (Reset from stock recovery does wipe internal sd. From cwm/twrp internal sd is preserved).
You will trip the warranty bit if you flash recovery after updating to 4.3. This only matters if your device is still under warranty or if you care about it. Otherwise Knox is removed from all root66 and custom roms.

[Q] Cannot install new rom or restore backup - please help!

Help!
I have a rooted Evo that I had MikG 3.11 on. I was in the process of flashing a new Rom: Energy_3.15.2012.Sensation.Sense.3.6_ICS.zip when just a short way into it, it rebooted back to recovery.
I'm using RA-supersonic-v2.3 for recovery.
To begin the flashing process, I:
Wipe CACHE
Wipe DALVIK-CACHE
Wipe BOOT
Wipe SDCARD:.android_secure
Wipe SDEXT
Honestly, I can't recall whether I also wiped SYSTEM or not and am wondering if I did and that created my problem?
The last thing I did was Wipe ALL userdata/factory reset.
Then I attempted to flash the new rom.
After the flash failed, I wiped All userdata/factory reset again and tried the flash the rom again. Of course, it failed again.
Then I tried to restore my nand backup of MikG3.11 and it did the exact same thing. It showed about 2 dots of the restore process and then rebooted again.
I have no idea what I did wrong or what I should do next.
While waiting for one of the experts here on XDA to help, I'm going to pull my sdcard and back it up.
Please help! Thanks.
I had an old nand of Myns rom from last May and it restored just fine. Wheh!
Now I'm trying to Wipe all and restore my current MikG nand and am getting an error when formatting SDEXT
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid argument)
Error mounting /sd-ext/!
Skipping format...
Any ideas what would be causing this?
I mounted SD-EXT and then wiped it and that seemed to do the trick. I was able to nand back to MikG.
I have no ideas what may have happened or why the phone was behaving like it was. I've never seen that before.
Before attempting to flash Energy rom again, I'll redownload it I guess.

I'm not sure why you think flashing that Energy ROM is a good idea. It's for the Sensation. I think you missed that in the title. The EVO doesn't have an ICS Sense ROM available.
Just be happy you didn't brick your phone trying to flash a ROM for an incorrect device on it. That's what messed up your partitions/mount points.

Used ODIN to go back to stock and now stuck on SAMSUNG screen

I can get to download but nowhere else
the phone wont get past the glowing Samsung after the ATT "rethink" animation
I used ODIN 3.07 and the root69 LG1 file
LG1 from here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31039805
Try using ODIN 3.0.4

SIMPLE FIX....
preform factory reset in recovery before (or after) flashing stock.
Stock odin flash does not flash or wipe data partition. and some files that you have in there become incompatible with older firmware and stop stock from booting.
NOTE!!!!! factory reset from STOCK recovery WILL WIPE SD CARD TOO!!! CWM recovery factory reset WILL NOT wipe sd card... backup your pics and downloads!!!!

I had a similar issue and was able to resolve it by using this guide to install CWM
http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-sgh-i747-att-clockworkmod-recovery-99791/
reviving this thread because I'm having a similar issue. It was all my own doing I know I know. I was flashing the rooted/cwm tar from the sgs3 toolkit and the phone would do this thing where it would show the first 2 boot screens then go black and keep the blue LED on which actually alternated from lightblue to dark blue. I then tried to flash stock which did nothing. Then I got it to boot past the boot screens and show me both the samsung and att animation. it now hangs on the SAMSUNG screen. when I try and wipe data in CWM (6.0.2.3) it says this
(re-written)
-- wiping data --
Formatting /data...
Error Mounting /data!
Skipping format
formatting /cache
formatting /sd-ext
formatting /sdcard/.android.secure..
error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure!
skipping format...
data wipe complete.
I cannot get anything to wipe or mount and I cannot efs clear it in odin. I would love to be able to get back to stock since I believe this is recoverable. Thanks for reading my mess of problems and attempting to give some advice.

If you Odin back to stock, it should give you the stock Recovery, not CWM or TWRP. Try doing the Odin to stock again, then use the stock Recovery to reset to factory defaults.
If you used a JB stock with Odin, then try using an ICS stock with Odin. ICS is more reliable when it comes to fixing flash issues.
it looks like you didn't wipe cache and dalvik.
just go back to recovery and wipe them.
Don't know what I did but I fixed it. Thanks for replies. We can lay this thread back in the ground now.

An odd situation please help?

Okay so to start off I had RSL14 Hyperdrive installed on the rom, ended up trying a new one and when going to wipe data, cache, dalvik, system as usual i ran into an odd error. I am using TWRP recovery and when going to wipe data, the phone just restarted, so i rebooted into recovery and tried again same thing.....which was odd. So i reinstalled twrp and then tried again same thing. Then I decided to install CWM 6.0.1.2 and it wipes data and everything fine, but when going to wipe cache, dalvik, or data it sometimes states E: unknown volume for path {/sd-ext}. On top of that everyonce in a while it says E: unable to format unsafe partition?
Please help its causing me problems and I am a flashaholic.
Regards,
Sean

Unsafe partition usually means your internal partitions got corrupted somehow.
I would suggest to flash a stock ROM via ODIN or ADB. You could try MSkips toolbox if your comfortable using it-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488

If I flash the stock recovery via odin will this fix the partition? I'd really hate to have to do that but reflashed both recoveries a couple different times and like the rom im currently on but if it must be then I guess I have no choice.

I think you need to flash both of them over.

Make a backup, ODIN back to stock rooted, then reflash recovery and restore

I was gonna tell him that, but I figured with all the issues he was having, it was better to start from scratch.

[Q] unable to wipe cache or restore to it

Long story short, I've spend the better part of 2 days trying to get my phone to working order.
I tried to flash the stock 4.0.4 rom into my phone. After I did that, the radio stopped working so i wanted to go back to my previous All-star-v7 rom that i had backup in the external sdcard.
When I was installing 4.0.4 i had to switch from CWM to TWRP to get it to install. I switched back to CWM using ODIN but now when i try to wipe the phone so i can restore a backup, it hangs up on wiping /cache and if i try to restore it hangs up on restoring cache....
What do i do? I had used the infamous super wipe and cache wipe to get the phone into 4.0.4 I think i messed up something because of using those...
update: Strangely, I can restore a backup of 2.3.6 and even though it hangs on restoring /cache. I restart the phone and it boots up to it. I also find that google play is unable to update any of my apps, it looks like it's because of the corrupted /cache. how would i fix it?
update2: i used odin to flash into TWRP 2.6.3.1 and did a cache wipe and it's stuck at "unable to open '/cache/recovery/.version'. anyone know how to fix that?

[Q] CM 11+ not flashing?

Hello! I'm new to the forums here. I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 3 LTE (T999L) that i have rooted, (root 66), flashed custom recovery, ClockworkMod recovery (v6.0.4.5) and have installed CM 10.0. However when i downloaded CM 11, it wouldn't flash, I looked it up and found I needed to change the files by deleting all the Assert lines in the updater script, so I did, and compressed it, loaded it to my SD card and tried to flash it. (System wipe, wiped cache, dalvik ect...)
CWM gave me a Installation aborted. So I looked at the CWM log and it said: "using /data/media for /sdcard/0/clockworkmod/.last_install_path.
"Can't partition non mmcblk device: /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.3/mmc_host/mmc1 "
I don't know what to do from here, so if anyone can point me at the right direction that would be great. I'm like 20% sure that it's the kernel, but like I said, I'm not that sure. I have rooted 3 devices with no problems but I have never really run into this before.
You should wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, and reset data in Recovery. And then try flashing the new CM 11 ROM. Make sure it's compatible with your Phone.
If this fails then I recommend using Odin3 to flash to stock touchwiz ROM for your Samsung (getting the .md5 file or .tar ROM). Followed by wiping cache partition, wiping dalvik cache, and resetting the data in Recovery. Then flashing CM 11 in recovery by installing the CM 11 zip specifically for your phone.
Let me know the follow up.
Flashed back to stock (root 66), via Odin, flashed the same recovery, wiped system, cache, and dalkic in that order... And still got the "using /data/media for /sdcard/0/clockworkmod/.last_install_path.
"Can't partition non mmcblk device: /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.3/mmc_host/mmc1 "
Im using CM from d2tmo page. I know im using the right CM files...

Try using different recovery. Try them all philz touch, TWRP, and Clockwork.

I suggest stop using CWM (ClockworkMod recovery) simply because it's outdated. Please use TWRP. If you still have issues with the ROM then please check if you have the latest bootloader for your model to resume trying.
