Help with flashing ROMs - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello, I was able to root my S3 by following the video tutorial, and I installed CWM recovery. However, when I go to flash a rom in bootloader, CWM recovery isn't recognizing my sd card. I've looked up numerous threads and haven't found anything that will help me. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? USB debugging is enabled and my S3 is rooted with 4.3. Thanks for any help!

Is the sd card mounted in recovery? What format is it? Latest version of cwm? Maybe try twrp instead.

When I tried to mount the cache and sd card I got an error, It's a .tar that I put on using Odin, and it's version 6.0.1.2.

Pretty sure 6.0.4.5 is the latest. If that doesn't work try twrp.

I still get the error with the latest version. Could this be a problem specific to the SGH-T999L?

Other T999L users are able to flash just fine. If it were me, id start over by flashing the root66 firmware (NC1), and try again. Have you also tried flashing with TWRP? Mobile Odin?

Yeah I tried TWRP and got the same error, and mobile Odin said my device wasn't supported. Root checker confirmed that my device is rooted so that's good, I just can't seem to get this sdcard read error to fix.

Only other thing to try is replacing the card.

Update CWM with no OS?

Ok so after rooting and installing CWM 5.5.0.4, I went to install the latest ParanoidAndroid. Big Mistake.
Fail, Error, etc.
I found out I need the latest version of CWM to avoid the error. Well, seeing as I've already wiped the operating system, I can't just check USB Debugging in the OS, Because there is no OS. I went into download mode & no dice. I tried mounting and unmounting in CWM and no dice.
So I can't use the Toolkit to update CWM.
So then, how do I get the latest version of CWM? Can i do it through ODIN?
Does Odin recognize it? Did you try plugging the SD card directly into the computer and putting a flashable zip on it?
Odin back to stock and start over. Use root66 method, its easiest.

Odin will work with the CWM in my signature.

Please help!! Error (bad)

Hey there xda.
I have an i747m with rogers, and I am on stock touchwiz..
Phone is rooted, reset, wiped, update cwm, and whenever I try to install any custom rom (carbon, liquid, paranoid) I get installation aborted (bad)
Please help
THanks
Have you tried TWRP instead of CWM?
Install this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5zMHVwLmdvb21hbmFnZXIiXQ..
Then go to settings in the app and select "install openrecovery script".
Then reboot and try to install a ROM again.
What version of cwm is it? And just to double check, you're using i747m rom releases, correct?
Ive never tried anything other than cwm so I will, also I just use roms that are for i747 and that are in the rogers section..
I never see any roms that say i747m they all say i747
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Make sure your recovery is the d2att version not the d2can version. It doesn't matter if you flash any i747 ROM on an i747m the only thing is you may have to set your APN manually other than that everything will work
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Alright awesome, so do you think the issue is my cwm? Maybe someone couls.give me a link to one that works for them?
Thanks for all the replies so promptly its really appreciated
Also that goo app downloaded a recovery that is d2can

Yes. Or you can just use the terminal emulator way which you can do from your phone if you feel comfortable enough doing so.

alright so I used teamwin recovery and I tried to use a rom I am positive works, liquidsmooth. and It said unable to open zip..

Redownload the ROM and try again. Just to be sure, you are not trying to flash it using ROM manager or too manager?

Nope installing straight from twrp and its not working..
Im installing from external sd card, and I've tried carbon rom and liquid neither seems to work.

you could redownload a ROM and try again or flash this in recovery: twrp2.4.4.0
flash it and reboot recovery (under advanced i believe). its obviously a previous version of twrp and may allow you to flash the ROM zip

Getting TWRP from goomanager...says no recoveries were found for your device?

Rooted via odin. Everything smooth so far. Downloaded goomanager. Hit Menu/install open recovery script, it asks "are you sure you would like to do this? This will download and write a recovery image to your device." I click "yes". And it says "no recoveries were found for your device". Anyone know what is up?

You don't have a T999, but a v/n/l. You'll have to flash the T999 version manually.

It is if you have a T999. But for it and another T999 variant you should just use the T999 recovery. See my Sig.

I get the same "no recoveries ..." message when trying to install TWRP on Goo Manager. How do I install the TWRP zip file on my wife's T-Mobile S3? The phone is stock, but rooted using mrRobinson's method. I download the zip file from here (thanks to DocHoliday77) and flash using Odin?

Flash the zip in recovery, tar in Odin. Your choice.
If you have the T999L TWRP doesn't have a recovery specifically for it. And I am glad they don't. Only use d2tmo (T999) recoveries. Otherwise your just adding one more reason some roms won't flash.

Thanks Doc. I definitely have the t999, not the L or any other version. I don't know why goomanager isn't recognizing it, I'll try flashing the zip in recovery. I forgot how much I don't like CWM.
The reason y'all are getting the errors with the goo manager app is because the servers have been down since Friday. They are replacing the servers, they have been warning for couple of months that they were doing it. They've said they will announce on their twitter when it's back up and running.
Are you running a custom Rom? Or flashed a mod? Sometimes the software you flash will report it as being different.
For example, I have a T999, but have posts all over here with T999L, T999V and T999N in the Sig!

Good to know, thank you for that info. I'm currently using eweman's srx 1.8 rom, it's just a standard 4.1.2 TW rom with a theme. I successfully flashed twrp through recovery so it's all good, I was just wondering why it wasn't working through Goo, now I know.

Failed at Odin

Hey gang, I'm stuck. I wanted to start my phone up back from stock to sell it to my friend and he wanted it not rooted. So I went to Odin and did all the steps correctly but it keeps failing. Ok last night I was able to use it and I did all the set up and even installed the update on my phone and now its on 4.3 over the air.
I wanted to put the S3Rx rom to show my friend what you can do with the phone but I can't install it because Odin keeps failing. The only thing I've noticed different was that the phone has now this "knox" app. I don't know if samsung made it harder to root your phone or what with this 4.3 upgrade.
Can someone help me solve this? what I want to do is just root my phone again. Any clues?
What are you trying to do in Odin?

I don't know what you mean about cf-auto root. I even tried the other method up the installing the twrp.tar file and using Odin trying to flash the Knox removal zip, and nothing seems to work.
I don't understand I used to do this all the time and it never gave me problems. I used to do this to clean out my phone with so much junk that it was chewing up my storage space.
If all you want to do is remove Knox then flash a recovery with Odin, and flash a stock ROM like stockmod 4.3, its also pre-roooted.. You cannot do that with Odin
Edit: also if you ever want to restore to stock or use root66 you need to flash the 4.3 tar versions, nothing below or it will fail everytime.. Things changed with the 4.3 official update

with this I can't get to flash a rom. I was trying to flash the S3Rx 3.0 aroma but whenever but it just won't and whenever I try to go to recovery through Rom Manager theres an era.

I've never used TWRP. I don't even know how to get it. If I do go to Rom Manager it says "you must root your phone for Rom Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su".
thats what I get when I go into Rom Manager.
when I pick ClockworkMod Recovery it asks for either 2.x or 3.x+ I pick either one and it says that it has been set up to use your existing recovery installation. then I tap OK and when I get out of app and go back into it, it says there is an update available for CWM I click at it and then it does the installation at 100% then I get "an error occurred while trying to flash your recovery"
So basically I have no recovery that can flash any roms. I really appreciate your help and patience. I'm just going insane here I honestly believe its that upgrade I got OTA to 4.3 because all along before I had 4.1.2 and gave me no problems. I think what it was is that when I used Odin to unroot my phone I did all the installation to get back to stock, then I was wondering about updates so I went to the menu and tapped on the Software upgrade and then it was upgrading (500 and something megabytes) then it reboot and it was 4.3
You need to download the recovery from http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/d2tmo and flash it with Odin.. Keep in mind that this will trip the warranty counter just to let you know, and you cannot reset it.. After that you can flash the ROM

Help!!!! Possible brick fixing to happen in twrp

Hey guys I just rooted my s3 using towelroot and then dl twrp app and attempted to install recovery when it was finished I rebooted to twrp recovery and it says there's nothing on my phone no data or anything. Before I rebooted the system to figure out what happened it told me there was no OS on the phone so now I'm stuck in twrp. What do I do? I've never used that app, does it auto select the recovery for you, or do you have to choose? If so which one did you try?
Did you wipe anything?
Have you tried to reboot even though it tells you there's no OS?
You may have to Odin the stock firmware. Yes you need a computer to do so.

Towelroot is a new way to root devices. I've only used it with my note 3. It only gives you root. And only downloaded twrp manager in play store and ran the install recovery script from inside the ago. I did all this because I don't have access to a computer right now. I was able to boot back into the phone without anything happening to it. Now I need to know why when I was in twrp recovery that twrp was not able to read or Mount any of my data or partitions...?

You can use Towelroot for the S3 too. I have a thread about it in the General section.
As for the recovery issues, I'm not sure. What model is your device? What firmware is it running and what version of TWRP is installed? (I think the latest is 2.8.0.1. Try both that and 2.6.3.1.) You can get the recovery from my signature.
If those don't work, try philz recovery instead.
