[Q] GPE on a regular One M8? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am thinking about buying a One M8 and I was just wondering if one can install the Google Play Edition on a regular One M8, if I am not happy with the Sense Gui and want a plain Android?
Also what will I be missing, if any, if I install the GPE?
Regards,
BTJ

Yes. You'll lose sense features. There's a couple threads about it already. Xda has a nifty search feature.

This. I'm running this myself and it kicks ass. Every bit as smooth as Sense in my case.

Why are you guys linking a page for GSM phones only in a Verizon m8 section? Has it been moded so you can get the ota updates with the Verizon variants now?

No. But all gsm One m8s can flash any gsm rom. If you change the Cid/mid or supercid and flash stock recovery you can receive otas for the variant you flashed. Though, most devs incorporate the updates from otas into their roms fairly quickly.
Suffice it to say I never really understood people's obsessions with getting otas right as their released.

So whenever an android update is released, there will be a new gpe rom available to download shortly thereafter? Or will there just be an update for the gpe rom?
Thanks

Yes there will be updates, it might be a full rom or OTA, depends on the dev. And normally you get it before it would be pushed from the carrier anyway

Need help in identifying a compatible rom

I have AT&T flavor of m8. I have heard that people are flashing roms from international versions to AT&T versions. Something like this used to be a big no no.
1. Can someone please help me in identifying how is this possible?
2. Which ROMs from this m8 forum can I install on my AT&T version?
I'm S_offed.

I have the att m8 which I converted fully to gpe...can't go back to sense till ruu's become available later if I wanted to...anyway the reason international Roms work is because the att version is pretty much the same hardware as international/gpe... Any ROM from the international side will work... Before I did the ruu gpe conversion...I ran viper arhd insert coin virtuous renovate on my att m8 with no issues.

Ok, I really want to try a few roms from international section. Is there any rom that I have to avoid?

As you are s-off, could you not update your cid and firmware? Then you are free to flash any rom.
I'm not really clued up on carrier branded phones through so I could be mistaken.

I was wondering if modem or any driver component meant for specific version of hardware is included in Rom, and I flash it over to AT&T version, then will it not be a problem? But I think it really not is an issue.

CID/MID has nothing to do with roms, the only time this comes into play is if you are trying to OTA or RUU back to stock, RUU and OTA check the CID/MID and determine whether or not the model is compatible with that particular OTA/RUU... As for modems, generally roms do not include radios/basebands, most roms are just system/boot, if a radio is included it is more then likely stated in the Devs OP, also with S-Off its easy enough to fix radio issues should you run into this. As I said the ATT variant is based off the international and gpe variant hence any rom will work.
You don't need to update the firmware. You can flash any gsm Rom. They pretty much all have the att apn but if not just manually input it.

An easy question

Hello I have an HTC One M8 from tmobile and I want to root it. I was going to wait until I upgraded to lollipop and then root but from the looks of it, it will take some time until tmobile releases the update. Do you think i should wait until the upgrade and then root? Or should i root then update? How much time do you think it will take for the carriers to release the update?
Thanks in advance

I would think that the update to Lollipop should be hitting us soon. HTC's promise is that the update will be out within 90 days of source code release which was Nov. 4th. Just a few more weeks and we should have it. If you check HTC's software update status site it says that its being integrated, then will need certified and then rollout. The developer/unlocked versions had rollout within a few days of starting certification.
Thanks, so whats the safest method to root the phone? Ive seen an htc quick root tool but is it updated to work with my phone?
Thanks again

I just used fastboot commands since my computer is a Mac and most of the quick tools are meant for windows. I unlocked the bootloader with HTCDev, then installed TWRP then let TWRP root the phone. I then went on to S-Off and flash the GPE RUU and found that I liked Sense better than GPE.
--------------------------------EDIT-------------------------------
I should point out that I am now back to completely stock with S-Off.
I dont know much about rooting but I see people that install cyanogenmod...can I install that? Is it better than the stock m8 OS?

I personally like stock. Cyanogenmod is a AOSP modified ROM and pretty well made based on when I was using it a few years ago. Can't help but expect they've only gotten better. If you move away from a stock sense or a modified sense ROM, you will lose some of the specific features of the phone (proper use of dual lens camera, quick unlock shortcuts, blinkfeed, etc.)

Oh so what can I install if I cant install modified roms? What other advantages i have with root? I know I can have apps like titanium backup and greenify but those things arent that important to me.
Thanks again youve been a great help

You can flash the international FW. I did. Worked with android revolution and a few aosp ROMs without a problem. Make sure you supercid first in order for your phone to take a different FW. I run 2.10
As said above, you can flash other firmware, I myself was using the international as well. Just be aware that you'll lose wifi calling.

Is there a root for T-Mobile Android M M8?

Hey guys, I've been waiting to get android M and sense 7 before I root my phone, now I realize that root availability depends on firmware and carrier.
Could you guys please tell me if there's any way to root the One M8 on T Mobile, android M?
It doesn't matter what phone nor carrier. You have root. 2 different ways if your s-on or off. Just search the HTC One M8 thread and you'll find it.

Oh, sweet, thanks! I was confused since I keep seeing some guides that say they're exclusive for like, AT&T m8 or what not.. So I can use any guide for Android M root for M8?
Only way is to S-Off your device with Sunshine
http://theroot.ninja/
It costs a one time fee of $25 in which it'll Unlock your Bootloader and S-Off. You can then fastboot flash a custom recovery to install SuperSU or a compatible Custom Rom

Here be the latest tmobile US firmware for the htc 10 - https://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-10-t-mobile/news/. I myself flashed the US unlocked/developer firmware, but that requires S-off and changing your CID. Im pretty sure either firmware set will be ok for any current rom you wish to flash, as most require version 1.80.x atleast. If you plan on keeping to stock rom, I would for sure recommend flashing the unlocked/dev firmware due to less bloat, even though the tmobile firmware is pretty clean. Good luck
