nexus 7 2013 gaming overheat - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi everyone ,
I recently acquired a nexus 7 2013 and i really love it .
The screen is gorgeous , the processor is really super fast , it never lags .
I'm just wondering about one thing :
Whenever i play heavy 3D games such as dead trigger 2 , asphalt 8 and real racing 3 , the tablet gets hot , it even reaches 70+ degrees celsius when i play dead trigger 2 but never exceeds 60 or 65 degrees celsius when it's real racing 3 ? Why does it heat that much when playing dead trigger 2 and not real racing 3 ? Is it a question of optimisation ?? Also , is it normal that the tablet's temperature is about 40 to 50 when i'm surfing and chatting or watching some videos ?

It could be the texture type some of the older ones create more load on the gpu creating more heat and more power drain, I wish ASTC was mandatory for opengl es 3.0/1 hopefully it is in opengl es 3.2 best one at moment is ETC2

Thanks for your reply .
However , i don't get it . sorry for being such a newbie .
Asphalt 8 is supposed to be one of the most heavy games when it comes to graphics . what i understood is that some games may be using old textures , but why ? Is it going to be the same for future games ? Because i become really worried when my cpu reaches 70+ c . I know that the adreno 320 inside the nexus 7 2013 is opengl es 3.0 capable , but what is open gl es 3.2 ??

The device is designed to shut off when it reaches its set max operating temperature dont worry. I think its 75 degrees by default

No i'm afraid it's not 75 because last time when my tablet was plugged in i tested asphalt 8 and it became too hot 82 degrees celcius so i guess that thermal throtling is somehow around 85-90 degrees .

But really, the point is that the kernel limits the max cpu temp for you so need to worry. Even 90 degress wont cause harm. Over time though very high temperatures can affect the life of the battery.
Thermal throttling is a completely different concept

I've seen reports that with lates Adreno drivers temperature is lower in heavy games

Anyone has got this problem too ? Should i be too worried? Besides , my battery's temperature never exceeded 28 so my only problem is with the cpu and gpu ? Do you think i should root my nexus 7 and flash a new custom rom like paranoid or cyanogenmod , but i'm afraid i won't be receiving updates from google :/ so where's the point of buying a "google" product ?

You think this is an issue?
For me when i play about 15mins, tablet gets warm near the camera and speakers randomly shuts down.
RMA right now, and needless to say i feel like i sunk $220 into the toilet. (not even mentioning the widespread touch / grounding issues)
It was my first ASUS device and will be a last one. I didnt even had such issues with chinese brands.

Yes i also
Well i too have nexus 7 lte model and i am facing the same problem from a while.... My cpu temperature goes from 60-78°c while gaming........ It is because optimization some games are optimized for tab while others make it damn hot

[Q] Gets Hot, only when playing game. is it normal?

I started to play kritika and real racing 3. My new G3 gets to 104 degree F when i play kritika for 10 min, but the temp is only between 90- 95 , when not playing any game. i had the phone for 3 days. never had the dim down or auto switch off issues, only this heat. is it normal?? mine is LG G3 D851.
It's normal :good:
coincidentally, the battery inside the G3 says to not let it get hotter than 104F
The game can utilize CPU to the maximum so the unit can get very hot.
Nice, considering the ambient temperature here can reach 120 degrees on a daily basis...
Sent from my LG G3
Today it reached 106 in 7min when playing kritika(heavy graphical game), heats up slowly when playing clash of clan.
Do you think I should replace my device with my carrier?
YES
O yes...playing games with heavy graphics or watch movies for a long period can heat it up pretty quick ...I personally take the case off when playing to help it stay a little cooler, and if i am home i take the back of as well, since i have heard cases of damage from over heating. :good:
I was typing the Battery temp as 104 and 106. cpu is at 120 - 150F

It's the same with every phone I used for the last 2 years. Plastic, glass or metal, the phone still gets hot.

if I buy a case and use it. would it cause more heat to be contained? or would it release more heat out? planning to buy a rubber case

Celcius? Yes, that's crazy.
I got the same during gaming and charging or using nav with car charger
any suggestions ? like should i be worry or is it made to be stressed\overloaded\heated like that

Not sure, maybe return it? High temps like that over time can weaken solder joints and cause damage. 90+ is definitely high. Highest i saw was 70+.
btw forgot to mention that that was with the termal *something something* on , in the hidden menu .
now turned it off again and i guess i'd get a bit of a lags but "not fried" cpu

Does the OnePlus 3 get extremely hot to the touch?

Everywhere I looked they said that the OnePlus 3 has the least thermal throttling and best sustained performance of any phone out there. But nobody discussed why exactly it did not throttle while other phones did. Everyone simply said "Oh they must have very good thermal management or something". Then I saw a video comparing the temperatures of the ZTE axon 7 and the OnePlus 3 (google "Zte axon 7 vs OnePlus 3 antutu thermal throttling"), it turns out the reason the OnePlus 3 doesn't throttle isn't some magical thermal dissipation and management, it's solely because they raised the temperature at which the phone would throttle to beyond comfortable zones. In the video with just a few iterations of Antutu CPU test, the OnePlus 3 metal skin's temperature reached a scorching 47 degrees Celcius. Google shows that holding anything metal at 50 degrees Celcius for more than a brief moment can cause tissue damage (1st degree burns). And this phone was just shy of that temperature during Antutu's benchmarks when only the CPU was running, so can you imagine what temperatures it would reach when you're playing a highly graphical game where both CPU and GPU are being taxed at the same time? Why does nobody talk about this?
nothing to worry about IMO

Thank you for your useless opinion friend.
The only game i play on the one plus it's hearthstone but I don't notice an high temperature during session ... I think a benchmark it's one of the most stressful things you can do with your smartphone...

No actually Hearthstone is not a demanding game at all, not even remotely. In fact an iphone 4 could run it without busting a sweat. And many games can actually be more stressful than a benchmark because you would be running both CPU and GPU at the same time and would likely be running the GPU at 100%. Most GPU benchmarks run the GPU at 100% too but without using the CPU at the same time.
A non issue imo

I can't figure out why the hell that idiot in the video used real racing as a benchmark. Do these people even know what a GPU or CPU is?
Anyway, that video is not reliable, especially since the OnePlus 3 uses a 1080p display and has to push far less pixels than those other phones, that game does not tax the phone's hardware in any way shape or form.
The CPU starts throttling at 75°C like pretty much any other phone out there... This thing just dissipates heat better than any other Android phone out there which is why the chassis heats up a bit more. Don't worry it doesn't get that hot at all

The fact that there's a lot of us out here using the phone, but as far as I've seen zero reports of people getting burnt by hot phones, in. Y experience it stays way cooler to the touch than either of my last two phones (Xperia z2 and Samsung s3).

Mate 20 x overheating

I'm facing an extreme overheat in top of the phone and when i use cpu monitor to check cpu temp sometimes it goes to 52 degrees in normal use ( browsing)
i tried software solutions none of them worked
I think that my cooling system is damaged
Can anyone help me please ?
Hmm, rather strange. I can game a extremely graphically demanding game and my baby stays cool, as soon as I leave the game temps starts dropping fast

Question Games unplayable due to thermal throttling stutters. Any fix?

Just trying to play Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Snapdragon 860 Xiaomi Pad and I notice fps drops on 1x and 4x. Try every setting, nothing changes. Even Gpu usage is only half.
Then I enabled fps counter and whenever it hits 30 C max it throttles to super low fps and doesn't go any bit higher. Explains the stutters I had in other Games.
30 C is nothing, feels like a scam, it runs like a low-end device.
Is there any fix? Any tutorial that works? With root or so? Just 35 C would be enough, It’s just 10 C here too. If not don’t buy Xiaomi for games, it’s not playable at all! It’s like a bad joke.
Over here the same problem and stuttering in fixed 60hz emulators

Sucks man, surprised no ones talking about this. The device is easily strong enough for 3DS and even some Switch games, but with this maybe it can't even do some older emulators smoothly, will do some more testing.
So here is the Video:
Flickering is due to the video recording only, but you can still see that it runs fine until the temp hits 30c, then it becomes very slow. You can see the graphic turn orange.
hopefully a developer can port a kernel of the xiaomi x3 pro that they share the same soc and all these problems can be solved, since I bought it for emulation and it does not work smooth as silk
I hope so! But I found a fix for this problem at least, you have to use Citra, not Citra MMJ, there seems to be a problem with that version. In normal Citra it runs at 60 fps at over 35 C but it still has some frame drops from time to time.

I have Poco X3 Pro... it does have thermal throttling also... but I managed to get rid of throttling by flashing a HAVOC OS custom rom...
MIUI is known for throttling SOCs...
I have the same problem when playing Hearthstone. Anyway to turn off thermal throttling completely ?
