Odd Problem with SGHi257M - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The problem is that the phone will not ring for either incoming or outgoing calls. Someone phoning me gets no rings, it goes immediately to voice mail. When i try to call out the screen looks perfectly normal - all of the correct icons are showing up so it looks like it is ringing, but it is not ringing either at my phone or at the person i am calling.
The problem is cured by restarting the phone. Only after i restart the phone do i get notification about any messages that were left.
This happens only when the battery is at about 40%, but not always - just occasionally and rarely. It happened today for the first time in a few months; it also happened a few times, a few months ago.
I would think that at 40% battery there should be no battery charge related problems? 40% should be plenty to run the phone?
Any ideas? I am going to return it to the store and ask about this, but i would like to have some more info to go on, if any is available.

Update: It may very well be happening more often than i thought. I do not get a lot of calls, certainly not every day, so it could be quite consistent and i may not have noticed. For the next while i'll let it run down every other day and check.
It happened today. I just decided arbitrarily to check. Battery at ~35%. I phoned to check if i had any messages. Everything looked normal as i said in my original post, but it did not ring and did not connect.
Before re-starting i checked to see if Mobile Data was working. It was not. After re-start both Mobile Data and the Phone were working.
I am wondering what is the technical significance to the Phone problem of the Mobile Data also not working? They must be somehow related in the hardware or software structure of the phone.

I got my phone back today. On the report it says ...

Work performed
[202]-Full sw upgrade & phone reset

I'll see if it happens again or not over the next few days and report back. To me it sounds like they did nothing to the physical components of the phone, just flashed/installed/configured the various software components.

Here we are, exactly one week later, and the phone failed in exactly the same way. So the "repair" process they applied did not work. I'll be returning it to the Rogers store today and will report back here with the results.

I may have the solution to this problem of network drops now, finally. I took it back to the Rogers store where i bought it. This time there was a more knowledgeable guy there. He took one look at the screen and said "I know exactly what is the problem". What he noticed was that the LTE notification was not showing. This city is an LTE hot spot. The phone should connect with LTE virtually anywhere, anytime. He said it is not the phone at all, but that there is a "switch" that needs to be reset for my account; something to do with the SIM card. After a couple of phone calls he returned the phone and said that it is fixed.
Time will tell. I'll post again.

False alarm. The fix made it worse. Now it not only drops network connections, but also drains 50% of the battery over the course of one day with very little use. Used to drain 20%.

Just reporting that the so-called knowledgeable guy was incorrect. Still dropping the networks. I went back and he was incorrect again as he believed that you had to have Mobile Data enabled to make/receive calls. Oh well, he was doing his best. Got thru today so far with no dropouts, and battery drain returned to normal ~20% loss for the day. Will see what happens overnight and tomorrow.
Getting kind of tired of having an unreliable device. Hope this gets settled soon. I'll be back to him as soon as it drops out again.

Here is a summary of this problem and of the work done by the official repair center, the results, and finally at the end a couple of questions ...

It never connects, it eventually gives up.
3. Mobile Data is not working. With Mobile Data enabled there is no icon on the notification bar. Google search and PlayStore do not run.
4. Wi-Fi is working. The icon is on the notification bar when it is enabled. Google Search and PlayStore work with Wi-Fi.
5. The problem is temporarily cured by restarting the phone. Only after i restart the phone do i get notification about any messages that were left. Then eventually the problem re-occurs.
When i sent phone back the first time this is what they did ...

I have set up the CleanMaster [CM] and BatteryDoctor [BD] Apps. I have turned off any automatic options in both. I make only light use of the phone - a few calls per day, maybe one Google search, nothing else. I run the 1 Tap Boost CM Widget and the Save Power BD Widget after each use of the phone.
I also have installed NoWallpaper [saves a wee bit of battery power], SmoothCalendar [very nice and very useful] and one of the Clock Apps [with a useful 1 x 2 Widget].
I have not yet disabled the 50+ Apps that CleanMaster reports as harmless to disable as my phone is still under warranty and has this issue that the service people have not yet been able to resolve. But i will be doing that and i highly recommend it to others.
I have had the phone back from the 3rd repair for 6 days now. I am leaving it powered on overnight. At the end of the first day battery = 89%, second day 74%, 3rd day 55%, 4th day 46%, 5th day 31%. That is 5 days of light use. Was 23% this morning so i re-charged it to 100%. I'm happy with 5 days of light use.
I do not have written notes on the previous battery performance. But from memory it used more than 20% the first day, at least an additional 30% the second day. There was not enough to trust it for the third day as it lost more overnight. I was running BD and CM, using the CM Widget but not the BD Widget.
I am wondering when the phone will fail again. I'll post again when that happens as i feel certain that it will. But i secretly hope it will not
So, finally, here are my two questions ...
What is the actual, presumably hardware, problem with the phone that they are not able to find?
What did they do to improve the battery performance so dramatically? Did they for example lower the CPU clock rate?

I have posted about this problem on four S4 mini forums and on one S forum. No one has ever seen or heard of this problem. It is clear that my phone is the only one with this problem.

Thanks fort the response, i told her not to get the phone.

Well, it gets worse. The phone messed up today same as before. A bit more than two weeks after the "repair". I was at home in one of the strongest signal areas. Would not receive or make calls or use mobile data. So back to the Rogers store. By the time i got there it had started working again so i could not demonstrate the problem. Also used a lot of battery power today, about 40% with light usage compared to 15% or less per day for the past two weeks.
What the counter guy at the Rogers store said is that there is nothing wrong with the phone, that all cell phones do this, and that i should adjust my expectations.

Can we put together a list of known issues with this phone for those of us who are thinking of switching so we can see everything in one place instead of having to sort through all the mess to find the issues and resolutions. Thanks
This list is just a copy and paste of the main points listed in the first 5 pages so far to save you some reading. Its just a summary, nothing more.
- vertical lines on some models with specific box date
- dead red pixel on some models
- some models has odd camera flash light, when powering off
- occasional errors when playing media on the sd card
- battery has stayed stuck at "100%"
- WiFi settings shows connected to the correct network but keeps scanning (Power saving mode problem.)
- lock screen locks up me sometimes
- wouldn't stay powered down while charging
- it takes quiet some time to charge up
- it's always warm even when not it use, but it gets super hot when charging
- screen lock bug
- take a pic, then tap the gallery button in the camera app, share to facebook, will not upload, says cannot locate pic. go to regular gallery, upload pic same way and it works fine.
- issue with the display staying on
- games freezing up and crashing after about 5- 10 mins of game play
- trouble with data when connected to wifi.
- wifi works but the 4g will not get internet access.
- music player other than orginal makes all kind of funny things skipping ,play not play or stock

Same here, rebooted on its own after about 2 days of up time. No other issues besides that.
so, off all the stuff i've read in the forum thus far:
the list is something like this:
- vertical lines on some models with specific box date

Yeah it works fine with PlayerPro, but I'm still trying to find another podcatcher that I like. I'm kinda pissed that I paid almost $7 for Doggcatcher & now it barely works >:|
So far my only issue is that the battery has stayed stuck at "100%" twice now (only had the phone for a week obviously). Both times it was in the morning after the phone had charged all night, and then I take it with me for school/work. I used it for a few hours at school and it stayed at a 100% so I took it by T-mobile and they hadn't seen that before.
They did the same thing I did which was remove the battery and restart the phone. After that it read correctly (around 76% or something). Still I don't want to have to pull my battery every day after it gets a full charge. I'm going to see what it does tomorrow in the morning and go from there....anyone else have this issue?

I can understand that the most embarrassing thing to do in public is a battery pull. I haven't done a battery pull since my blackberry days

Haha yeah I can deal with it from time to time maybe, but I don't wanna be doing every freaking morning haha
I also have the 100% battery bug. I don't have to pull the battery though, just doing a reset by power off/on works to clear it. It *is* kind of annoying though...
I have seen this as well. It happened the last two mornings after charging overnight.

I saw the battery stuck at 100% as well on mine. Another thing i noticed that i have the WiFi ON all the time. So while i'm in office it is connected to the WiFi and the phone sits in my pocket for about an hour or more before i actually use it (using another phone at work), so after i wanna use it and it shows the WiFi connected symbol but no connection. Go to WiFi settings and shows connected to the correct network but keeps scanning. Turn Off WiFi and turn it back ON and its running again. Although i did not noticed this issue at home. Is it that at home my phone is always on table and not in my pocket....is it something to do with my my pocket
Power saving mode problem. When activated, it turns off gps, wifi, blue tooth etc.. (Whatever you choose) at specified battery level. However, when power is recharged past the set power saving mode point it doesn't turn these features back on. So annoying.
So when fully recharged, you have to go back and manually re-enable your gps, wifi, screen brightness etc..
This seems like a software issue, do the other brand gs2's have this problem?

My Galaxy S II wouldn't stay powered down while charging. Everytime I turned the device off while charging it would automatically power back on. I honestly wasn't sure if that was simply the way the phone was designed (which would be odd), but sure enough at the T-Mobile store today we opened up a brand new Galaxy to see if it would remain 'off' while charging. Sure enough, it could.
Long story short, I have the 100% battery malfunction, and an "unable to charge turned off" issue. Swapping out phones at T-mobile as we speak Another GSII btw, even with these annoying issues its a great phone. I think (hope) I just got a lemon?

Sometimes the battery works great, lasts a couple days. And sometimes, I get strange spikes where the battery drains extremely quickly (see attached images).
I have tried:
1. New device - I swapped my unit yesterday
2. Hard reset - restore all factory settings (and erase everything) off the phone
3. Battery cycle - i.e. let the battery run out entirely, recharge it from scratch
I have also tried diagnosing the issue via the stock battery app, GO Power Master, and BetterBatteryStats, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary when the battery usage spike occurs. Maybe there is some process running wild, but it doesn't seem to do anything...
Has anyone had similar issues? The only non-Google Play store app I have installed is Visual Voicemail - the apk I downloaded from this board.
You have tried everything I would normally suggest, but might have noticed something. Your sharp drop coincides with that red band on your signal bar. The red part signifying no cell tower signal. The sharp drop seems to start there. Is your phone stuck searching for cell towers when it has already re-established a signal? The earlier dip in the battery also has a red bar under it.
Also battery performance is not linear. If you are at 50% after 24 hours, you will not necessarily get another 24 hours. I am alwaysfinding myself at 50% after 18 hours and think, "Cool, I've found the right kernel" but sure enough I'm still plugging it into charge at 24 hours!
I know you say you normally get two days (which is very good) but this is all I can think of.
I use a powerful automation app called Tasker. With it you can set any phone setting to any phone condition. I've just checked, and it is possible to set a profile based on signal strength. With this you could specify a weak or no signal to do any manner of things, from play a notification sound, to turn off 3G and auto-sync. Set an exit task and it will also turn 3G and auto-sync back on when signal strength is healthy again. Might be worth a try.
Edit: If you have root access, Tasker supports the app 'Quick Boot Plus' as a plugin. With this you could set Tasker to reboot your phone if it is out of signal for more than 'x' seconds. I know it might not be very practical, but it would tell you if you we are looking at the real culprit.
Another edit: Scratch that. You could set Tasker thatif it sees no signal for 'x' seconds, turn on airplane mode, wait 'y' seconds, turn off airplane mode. No need to buy a plugin.

Yes, that's a good point - there is a drop in battery starting with the red line for the signal. I take the subway to/from work in the morning and evening. But I don't see any problems connecting after I get outside (i.e. it doesn't seem to be searching for signal).
Perhaps next time I can try setting airplane mode on/off when I notice the battery draining quickly - and see if that helps the issue. If it does, clearly it's a signal issue.
I like the Tasker idea, I will give that a try! Thank you for the suggestion.
I wasn't by any means expecting another 24 hrs, but that drain of "50%" occured over a span of like 3 hours... with no screen usage (i.e. the phone was just sitting next to me at the desk, supposedly "idle").
Whatever you do, don't cycle your battery deeply unnecessarily.

I've got this issue but it's down to my signal. At home it's fine and battery last's me well but as soon as I get to work my battery starts to dip due to Vodafone having poorer signal. Bad signal is killing my battery too bad we can't change radio's as of yet due to no S-OFF.
what happens when we can s-off? i mean what adv will we encounter regarding with the issues that we are having?

Well S-OFF, we can unlock bootloader without having to use HTCDev meaning we can revert back to stock easily and without it tampering the status. We can lock it back to it's original state.
We can flash kernels without having to use fastboot.
We can flash radios. By flashing other radios we can improve our signals if one radio is bad, an improved signal is friendlier on the battery.
I get a weird spike too but mine causes the phone to die. Also mine was done overnight when I was sleeping. (see attachment) I'm not really sure what I can do. I hope this was a one time problem...but i'm not so sure. I'm still under warnty and this is my second HOX

[Q] Phone Repaired, What Did They Do?

My S4 mini SGH-i257M was malfunctioning so i sent it in for repair. The local Rogers store sent it to FutureTel in Markham [Toronto] Ontario Canada. This is what they did, according to the Completion Report that came back with the phone ...

It has been two weeks now and not only has it not malfunctioned, but the battery life is significantly improved - from 2 or 3 days of light use [usually just 2] to 5 days of light use.
What did they actually do? Does the recalibration affect hardware or software? Did they perhaps re-clock the CPU down to a slower speed? Any way to check this? What do they mean by adjusted battery level?
The phone is running KitKat 4.4.2, not rooted.

The first part (RF calibration) means they adjusted the radio to improve reception and transmission(rx/tx), so your call/network/wifi reception will be better; the battery level adjustment implies they altered the voltage to improve battery life. In both cases it's more likely they replaced faulty parts with fully functioning ones. Good to see you finally got your issue solved Mick

Unfortunately they won't give you the proper information on what they did nor will u able to find it. There are some apps which tell u what system and software it uses but that's about it

I also would like to know what they did with 'improving radio frequency'. Got the same problem as you, and would like to check if it's possible to manually fix the radio/frequency-problem, cause the guys from the repairshop didn't fix anything for me..
Otherwise: is there an app that notifies me when network connection is lost ?
I found this one : (updated url) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cnigrini.networkmonitor that works well..i now see immediately when my phone loses network connection.
However, now i still have to manually reset it by turning on/off airplane mode. Is there a way / app that does these steps automatically ?
So notifies when network dorps, and then refreshes it..
That would be one way to solve the problem i think..

Well, it gets worse. The phone messed up today same as before. A bit more than two weeks after the "repair". I was at home in one of the strongest signal areas. Would not receive or make calls or use mobile data. So back to the Rogers store. By the time i got there it had started working again so i could not demonstrate the problem. Also used a lot of battery power today, about 40% with light usage compared to 15% or less per day for the past two weeks.
What the counter guy at the Rogers store said is that there is nothing wrong with the phone, that all cell phones do this, and that i should adjust my expectations.

Hey Mdawdy, thanks for posting that one, when reading the descripting it seems like this one is doing both things: checking when connection is down, and when it is, puts the phone on/off airplane mode so that it reconnects again.
I will be testing this one for this time now..
It's probably true that all cell phones lose connection some times, for example when being in a place where connection is very low, but the problem with this Galaxy s4 mini is that it doesn't reconnect again when in an area where signal should be good...
Probably some software thing i think..
I'm still at 4.2.2 by the way.
Edit: found out that with a non-rooted device with android 4.2 or above, it's not possible for an app to toggle airplane mode on/off. So there are probably no (non-root) apps existing that will do this .

I installed and tried this one. Appeared to be working altho i did not have a network drop. Then i turned on, used, then turned off Wi-Fi. From then on the App continually reported that the network was lost even when it was good. Restarting the phone did not fix it. So i uninstalled the app.

For me it's also not working properly, and i bought the full version (
It's not notifing me when connection/wifi drops.. but I only see it when opening the app.
Also, like i said, i don't think there's an app that toggle's airplane mode on/off when gsm-connection is lost, because it's not possible with a non-rooted android phone that runs android 4.2 or above..

Since the update my WiFi has dropped out on my home network twice. Have to restart or turn airplane mode on/off.
Also I don't think the battery has improved any....

After the update, at the settings / power the scrolling is laggy. This module was updated, something is just not right at my device. I did a factory reset, no avail. It's lagging only over here, pretty annoying...

Yeah, its true. It slipped my mind. Probably this particular portion of the software was developed at the last moment, and they didn't have enough time to test it thoroughly
I have narrowed my wifi drop outs to the beyond pod app.
My camera won't focus after updating. I had the problem prior, but did the alcohol microfiber run to get the coating off and it was working great. After I updated the camera now seems like it won't focus, only objects within 5 inches are in focus. I did a factory reset and made sure that the camera wasn't set to macro mode. Nothing is working to fix this problem. I think my camera might just be broken now.

Now after a few days i think that the battery cannot hold on so long as with 4.4.2. Previously i could run it two days with moderate use, now the battery level drops to 20% after 24 hours.
At the update the battery was not fully charged. Is this behavior normal after the update, did i make a mistake, or does anybody else have the same problem?
I'm on 19% after 13 hours. WTF is going on? I cannot see any suspicious app causing this. Can i revert to 4.4.2? LOL...

I have (or had) the same problem as you with the new update. Try clearing the cache partition (that's what I've been told). I'm still keeping my eye on the battery to see if it's fixed. The problem for me was that Android Kernel and Android System was using too much battery.

These battery results are pretty bad compared to what I was getting prior to 4.4.3 (i got 2d5h once with 4h on screen and 7 hours awake).
Hi! I think i was able to fix it, the issue appeared on other devices which received 4.4.3. I cleared the cache for Google Play Store and for GP Services. Now i'm at 50% after 20 hours.

just tried that and hoping it works. I've tried turning off fast boot but having the same issues others are reporting also.

Hi, everyone, this is my first time here, so bear with me. On Wednesday, August 28, I downloaded the new Kit Kat 4.4.3 update from AT&T onto my One M8. Right after and for a few hours after, everything was in great condition as always. I've had my M8 since launch and haven't had a problem since and hold it very dear to me. Then, after about four hours, I noticed the phone was getting hot, really hot. I had power saver on as always and I saw that the CPU was taxed at 97%, just having Instagram running and YouTube actively showing a video. So I restarted the phone, clearing the cache and making sure that nothing was working too hard. That's when the problems really started coming up. It was getting hot but I ignored it and went to the Play Store to update my banking app and download Reddit News. After seven minutes of a normally one minute (if that) update, I stopped the download, cleared the cache and tried again. Nothing. So Google Play won't download, update, or install apps, Google, or third-party. That's not all. Hangouts will not send messages. Even in full LTE connectivity and 5 GHz Wifi AC, message could not send both to Android users (one used messages, the other Hangouts) and to an iPhone. It was like deja vu with my old iPhone 4S. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL. YouTube was giving me hell, too. When I would type into the search bar to search for a video, the search bar would clear. For example, if I'm looking up and type into the search bar on YouTube "Linus Tech Tips," then it'll work. But if after that I backspace or "x" out "Linus Tech Tips," and type something else, say, "Build a Gaming PC," If I use Swype (Swiftkey, Google Keyboard, or HTC Sense), the first word shows up, but as I'm typing, the subsequent words are erased and "Linus Tech Tips" shows up in the search bar (check him out if you don't already). This is EXTREMELY frustrating and now I can't watch The Joy of Painting. Damn. Finally, the CPU and heat I mentioned before is crazy. The CPU is always between 79% and 99% at all times. the RAM is usually at about 75% as normal, but the CPU is running nuclear hot. It's going to 105-115 degrees Fahrenheit. This worries me, all of this, because I wonder if this is the fault of the new 4.4.3 update for the AT&T M8 model or maybe underlying causes. I've had Malwarebytes scan my phone and find nothing. That caches are cleared and nothing seems to work. If anyone can help I would be extremely grateful because my only option in my mind is to do a hard factory reset of the device. Well, I think that the factory reset fixed it. It's been over an hour now, and the phone isn't overheating anymore. Battery life has only dropped 2% in that hour instead of the 2% every five minutes after the update.
After the 4.4.3 update the camera's manual mode doesnt change the exposure the same way as it did in 4.4.2 so i cant see the pics in the viewfinder at night before i actually take the pic and look at it, and that really sucks.

Phone loses certain settings or apps if the battery dies suddenly

I have searched as much as I can, but can't find any info on this. It has happened on both mine and my wife's M8, but only after updating to Marshmallow. If the phone dies suddenly without being able to shut down fully most of the time it will lose certain settings, like sounds, data and Wi-Fi turned off, saved Wi-Fi networks gone, etc. If it happens while starting up it has lost whole apps, all contacts; mostly acting like a first boot but some installed apps, settings, call history, text messages, etc did remain. Any ideas?

I spend the same, and also turns off me having 20 % battery....google traslate, sorry.
I get the exact same issue, but no idea why it happens :/

It's a glitch with HTC's Marshmallow version. It happens on stock as well as custom ROMs. Nothing to do but wait for an update from them, or always make sure your battery stays charged. It happens to me at 6%

I am having the same problem, heaps of settings change, including default keyboard, messaging app quick settings wifi etc
if my phone was dying at 5%i could deal with it but it is dying anywhere between 20 and 30% and often catches my unawares.
An update to fix this would be great.
Yup, I have the same problem only I don't lose saved wifi networks but I get signed out of every single app. I also get a google play services error which requires me to clear the apps data.

I have been having these problems for the past 4 months (running Lollipop)
I thought that the Wifi passwords issue and app logouts was due to low system memory. (battery would die around 15%)
Since doing a factory reset and 2 weekends ago, the battery dies around 25% and I still experience app log outs etc.
My device is close to the 24month warranty limit and I need a fix urgently.
I also have Bluetooth call random clipping happening both on lollipop and Marshmallow.
This is killing me. Any fixes yet?
Lately it's been losing home screen icons and a couple settings even when I manually shut the phone down. Ironically yesterday when it died suddenly some previously missing icons I had yet to restore reappeared.

A few times now manually shutting the phone down before the battery dies has led to all Google related icons (Chrome, YouTube, Play Music, etc.) being removed from my home screens and having to manually re-add them. When the battery dies it's a roll of the dice what, if anything, will be changed/lost.
In addition to almost everything already said RE: most customization is lost, apps and widgets disappear on restart, etc. I've noticed that all of the (mostly AT&T) apps that I disabled are enabled and updated when the phone comes back on! This is so annoying and is my first major problem with this phone! It's taking time to have to redo all my settings each time the phone dies!

Yesterday mine died at 30%, and upon restarting it went through the "Optimizing Applications 1 of 261" then proceeded to come up with a warning that the phone had an internal error and might be unstable until doing a factory reset. After clearing the warning it was stuck in a "Sense Home has stopped working" loop until I could get into Settings and clear the data for Sense Home. This allowed me to at least make sure things were backed up before doing a factory reset, but more than half of my contacts were missing as well as many text, call history, etc. A similar thing happened with the wife's M8 last week and had to factory reset hers then too.
I had this problem and had my battery and main board replaced in the final month before 24 m warranty ran out.
Do a battery test *#*#3424#*#*
Then hit more, and select battery test.
Battery has to be 100% to complete teat which takes an hour. Do this when you don't need it.
My test would often show 91-94% but I had one that said 71% which I saved a screen shot.
Since the battery and main board replacement it's still my favourite phone.
solve the problem of battery and loss of settings , change the battery of my htc, now everything is fine , 3 days that the battery is discharged properly , I hope this information will help someone.
Not positive I've lost settings, though I'm fairly certain I have. I have lost app permissions many times. And my phone seems to die around 30% and won't let me boot unless I am plugged into charger. I was recently forced into a factory reset due to a message that popped up just like a somebody else a few posts back. This is a recently replaced phone (VZW replaced it as the prior had battery problems). The prior one did not do this. I hope HTC get's their act together and fixes the issue. Highly annoying.
Ive been having this issue since the beginning of the year and now it seems to happen every few days. I pretty much don't have a choice but to buy a new phone at this point, which sucks because I love my m8.
This is exactly the same issue I've been having. I'm at my wits end with having to re-do all of my settings and apps daily, and sometimes (randomly!) it won't hang onto a charge for more than a few hours even if I'm barely using it. I basically have to leave it on a charger all the time to keep it from shutting down and losing all my settings! I used to love my M8, but for the first time ever I'm considering swapping to a Samsung just to get away from these issues. I've had this phone for a little over two years and these problems only just started around March 2016 - but they've been an absolute constant since then, and only getting worse.
