Hello, I just bought an R800x Verizon Xperia Play. I have no use of the phone part of it, but am mainly looking to overclock it and use it more for gaming with emulators (SNES, n64, Gameboy). However, on the side, I have noticed people using newer versions of Android which seems rather interesting. The current version seems decent (seems out of date though), but I was wondering what are the advantages to upgrading? Also I was wanting to know if there is any cool upgrades/apps you guys would recommend.

One of the advantages of upgrading to any newer version of Android would be the increased amount of compatible apps available for your phone. Another advantage would be the amount of features you get over the Stock ROM. But with advantages you also get disadvantages, as newer versions of Android need more resources to run the actual OS(except for Kitkat witch uses less resources than its predecessor Jellybean), leaving you with less resources for Apps/Games.
I'm currently using [ROM][GSM][CDMA][CM10][MULTIBOOT][NEOL+PLAY]Racing SPEED EDITION EOL and playing Pokemon Black in DraStic (NDS Emulator), and I haven't encounter any problems

Wow that's awesome, can you please tell me how??
I've noticed people have upgraded to jellybean 4.1.2, is that a good idea? Will I be able to play Pokemon Black or overclock?
Also, I've noticed that I would have to unlock my bootloader, and i'm not quite sure how to do that, but I definitely want too.

The ROM I'm using is actually based on Jellybean 4.1.2 (CM10), and i have it Over Clocked (BTW using Lupus kernel V13).
Yes, in order to be able to get Jellybean 4.1.2 you will need a Costume Kernel and in order to get a Costume kernel you will need to Unlock you Bootloader. Since your Xperia Play is R800X you will not be able to get Fastboot Mode unless you use a paid method to Unlock you Bootloader. You can unlock you Bootloader via the Test Point Method for free but it will not enable Fastboot Mode, you can still Flash a Costume Kernel but you will have to find the Costume Kernel in FTF form in order to be able to Flash it through Flash Mode in FlashTool.

Is there a specific tutorial you recommend me taking a look at? I am ok with not having a fastboot mode but it seems like I might be missing out without it
Also, when I type in the code to my phone, I go to configuration but I do not see rooting status anywhere. It just says MEID and MEID Software version along with the available speech codecs and working brands...

Use the tutorial I have already provided (Test Point Method). The only problem with not having Fastboot Mode is that you will need to wait until some one converts a Kernel from .img to .ftf.
The Rooting Status doesn't really mater, Since your phone is R800X its Probably (99.9999999%) "Bootloader unlock Status: No".

Ok, awesome thanks for the help I plan to test point mine later today. Anything else I should be aware of?
Also I noticed you said my rom has to be in .ftf format... Does that mean I'll be able to use a version of jb 4.1.2

The Kernel (NOT the ROM) has to be in .ftf instead of .img. Boot.img is for Fastboot Mode and kernle.ftf is for Flash Mode.
Yes, you will be able to use android 4.1.2 if you want.
My Xperia Play is R800a and I also wasn't able to get Fastboot Mode but I was able to Flash Lupus Kernel V13 (The FTF Version) via Flash Mode in Flashtool, then flashed a Jellbean(4.1.2) ROM (.zip file) via Costume Recovery(witch is build into the kernel)
PS

Ok I have attempted to unlock bootloader with test point and now i am officially confused. I understand what point I need to hit on the back, but when do I do it? I mean, I followed the tutorial, downloaded the s1tool, but upon attempting it nothing happened. I had my closepin on the testpoint while i plugged in my usb cord and I witnessed nothing happen.... I felt like I was supposed to have the phone in a special mode or something, rather than just off.

Did you installed the drivers?
If yes, try running S1tool in compatibility mode.
Also try using this Test Point:

Ok, so the guide says my "Windows will try to find the drivers and will attempt to install them. ", which is fine, but I never got that prompt from my computer. Also, when you say run S1tool in compatibility mode, you mean administrator? And do I just leave the phone off right?

Okay, first you need to download Flashtool(This is the easiest way of installing the drivers) and install it like any other Program. Once done go to C:\Flashtool\drivers and run Flashtool-drivers.exe to install the drivers.
To run S1tool in compatibility mode just right click on S1tool.exe and click where its says something like "fix compatibility problem" then click on the second option. Then Click on "The program works on an older version of windows" then chose WIndows XP. Click next and save.
And yes, the phone has to be off through the hole process.

Now, what kernel is available that is .FTF?

If it worked than you should get something like this: LOADER VERSION: "r4A069"
(r = Unlocked Bootlader and R = Locked Bootlader)
Here is a link to a website that has lots of kernels in FTF format(its the best list but its in Spanish)
http://www.taringa.net/comunidades/...pilacion-de-kernels-ftf-para-xperia-play.html
But before you flash a Kernel I would recommend to look for a ROM you would like to try out and see what Kernel it supports.

Anyways, hoping that it worked I found this to be useful http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2184897
I like the Super Jelly bean 5.5 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2372122 ) but the instructions is something i have never dealt with yet...
* flash your favourite FTF-62 or 79
* flash JB kernel lupus JBv8 480p XPLAY** turbo kernel 3.1 for NEO L
* you can flash lupus jb v13 480p also..but i still recommend for 600+data partition and little more performance v8 480p for xperia play.
* full wipe/cache/system
* install rom from sdcard

To flash FTF-62(or 79) and the Kernel you need to do it in Flashtool
Steps:
1.Open Flashtool
2.Click on the Thunderbolt Icon
3.Select Flash Mode
4.Select the FTF file
5.When FlashTool tells you to:
.....Power off your phone
.....Hold the Back Button
.....Connect phone to PC
6.Once done Power On
To Flash the ROM(.zip file) just enter the Recovery by pressing the Back Button at boot

Sorry, I know this is the arc forum, but as there is no mk16 forum, I saw that usually people post pro development's in arc's forums.
I bought an used mk16 with the 4.0.1.a.0.283 firm, and the bootloader unlockable as explained in this link the SE website.
I installed Android SDK, JDK, PC companion, etc. I was unable to install the fastboot drivers until I found someones in SE website and now it seems to be OK (blue light if I connect the phone (turned off) to the computer while holding menu key)
After that, I configured my phone to enable USB debugging. Then I installed flashtool, and I tried to root the phone with it. It worked! (I didn't expect it to work, because I saw a few post with scripts, etc. to root the phone...)
So...
- Now I am with that firmware, rooted. Wich rootable firmware do you recommend me to flash to my phone? I always loved cyanogenmod, but I don't know if there is problems with the freexperia releases (like bad quality in camera picture, low volume, etc.)
- What is the baseband? I have one ending in 49.
- What are the requirements to install clockworkmod recovery? I love this recovery to do my nand backups, etc. Do i need to unlock bootloader to this? Is there any chance to lock again the bootloader? You know, for warranty things.
- Do you have ny list of what apks are secure to erase from /system/app? For example, I don need the moxier pro, let's golf, etc.
I suppose that those questions have been answered before, but without the mk16 forum, searching that info is quite impossible...
Thanks in advance.

Xperia Pro has a very few roms for now.The famous CM7 & CM9 are available for Xperia Pro.I guess,MIUI is also available(not sure). But,You must unlock your bootloader in order to install these roms.Rooted phone is not enough to install these roms.Atleast not yet. And rest assured, there is not drawback regarding camera and volume.Different users have different taste, many like it and many dont. But the fact is they are closely equal.
Basebands are well explained by a XDA member in the following post, please do take a look at it

PS: Welcome To XDA
Thank you very much for all that information and the wellcome.
I can execute commands like "fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version" or "fastboot.exe devices" while in fastboot mode, so I assume that's OK.
But in the SE website they are very insistent about voiding warranty depending of blablabla. My phone is an unlocked (SIM free) from fabric one. I understand it will void the warranty if the phone would be form Vodafone (for example), but not mine... Do you know anything about this?
Do you recommend me any official rom? maybe the .42 one?
Now I have clear everything about the baseband, thanks.
That CWM apps you linked say to me (downloades form market) that MK16i is not supported by the app
I will take a look at that APK list, but first I want to be able do a NAND backup before starting to remove apks
Thanks again.

See, Unlocked phone means the phone is SIM free,i.e you can use any carrier SIM in your phone. But, Unlocked-Bootloader is a different thing. When you unlock bootloader, then you are free to flash any ROM which is compatible with your phone.Unlocking Bootloader voids warranty and that is what the SE website is trying to say.
I would recommend you to update your phone to the official .42 fimware version because it has many new features when compared to .283 ROM.Use SE update service or PC Companion for updating your phone.
And about cwm..try this...

Thx again
I know the diff between sim locked and bootloader looked. It's just that I don't understand why they let you unlock the bootloader, but don't keep the warranty...
I have unlocked the bootloader right now. Didn't know that it wipes all your configuration, apps, etc! At least, it's still rooted.
I have installed that CWM, and booted to it, but now I don't know what combination do I have to press to boot again into CWM XD Maybe is an image to boot just one time?
And about the ROM you recommend, PC Companion offers me the .62, not the .42. SE Update Service tells me that I have modified software (because of the rooting, I suppose) so it can't update my phone. Any idea?
Thanks again

Now that you have unlocked-bootloader, then you must not use SE update service, niether PC Companion Update nor SE OTA updates !! If you do,then it will brick your phone.
The other option you have is to flash a firmware. For more details follow this link http://www.wotanserver.com/en/sony-ericsson/se/xperia-pro-mk16/unlock-tool/debranding-flash

If you just need to flash an official firmware, then there is no need to unlock the bootloader. I was advised not to unlock it when not necessary (for example to flash the phone with some custom ROM like CM). Because with locked bootloader you should not be able to brick the phone and you could be always able to save the situation using Sony PC Companion.
So if you need to flash an official firmware, you can do it without any unlocking via Wotanserver. The firmware flashing is free, just register there. The flashing is very easy - there is a graphic wizard which tells you what to do.
EDIT: Ooops, flashing FW using Wotanserver is no longer free - costs 2 EUR now. Few weeks ago I flashed my phone there for free...

I recently bought a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play R800i, running android 2.3.4 and the latest Sony apps and stuff I also know that is unlocked to any carrier. I had read some things about locked bootloaders on this phone and was interested in rooting.
Question
1. What is a locked bootloader and what does it do? Can I unlock and relock it?
2. What's the easiest way to backup everything, except games on my phone?
3. If I root will I still be able to upgrade to ICS when the time comes? If so what's the easiest method to root?
4. If I install the ICS beta, can I return to stock GB?
5. What are some benefits of rooting this phone, I know about Custom Roms and such, is there anything else?
6. Can you dual boot between to different versions of android on the phone?
I think thats it, I'm used to my cheap Huawei U8180 that I could do anything too, I just don't wanna **** something up on this one.
Thanks

1. A locked bootloader, means that you cannot flash roms using flashtool or flash kernels. You can unlock it and I think there is away to relock it. However, unlocking it voids the warranty.
2. The easiest way to backup everything is to run a NANDROID backup from recovery.
3. If you root, you will still be able to upgrade. The easiest method varies, but if you dont want to unlock your bootroader look up ZergRush.
4. If you install the ICS beta yes you can return to stock GB.
5. Rooting the phone allows you to use themes, install clockwork mod recovery, install apps to sd card and various other things.
6. You can dual boot in a sense but it is still being worked on.

You can't install the ICX kernel without unlocking the bootloader, so no.
Locked cwm only works with certain stock-based roms, like T.E.A.M. or Darkforest.
To install anything else you need a cwm kernel that has been flashed with fastboot. The type you install with an app after obtaining root cannot change kernels, only the system partition.
Basically, one runs from kernel, the other runs from system.
Custom kernels can only be flashed with fastboot.
Stock kernels can be flashed with fastboot or flash mode.
You only have usable fastboot with an unlocked phone.
If you try flashing something like cyanogen with the locked recovery you'll get a boot loop.

What's the easiest way to unlock my bootloader? I would like it to be one of the reversible methods so if I **** it up, I can claim warranty.

Personally I like to use Omnius, but it can't be re-locked per se. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134334 as you can see in that thread, it's patched to seem locked but if they try loading an unsigned image it'll still work so they would find out.
I think re-locking only truly works for the official method, which if you're carrier locked isn't possible.
Also if you use Omnius, be very careful about leaving the sticker covering the test point intact or the warranty is void.

Is there anything purely software? Can the one that sony ericsson posted for their handsets be relocked?
I have no experience with testpoints and it all seems way to much of a pain in the ass.

Can I relock If i use that method?
The carrier locked plays can be done ONLY with the test point. That's it, no exceptions.
If you bought the phone full price and not carrier locked, you can use the official Sony method, which is reversible.
Unlocking your sim does not enable fastboot to use the official method so don't bother asking.
When the phone is off, hold the search button and plug it into USB. If the notification light is blue and the screen stays black, you have fastboot and can use the official method.

I've been trying to unlock the bootloader on my R800i using the instructions on the sony unlockbootloader site. My phone isn't locked to any carrier, it says the bootloader is unlockable, and when I put it into fastboot mode with the search key while plugging in I get the blue light and I get a device that shows up under device manager as S1Boot Fastboot. I've installed the android sdk along with google usb driver 4.0 and the android_winusb.inf file from the site. It keeps telling me that no drivers were found when i manually try to install the driver though, also tried downloading fastboot usb drivers from a few other places (also to no avail). Keep getting the waiting for devices message without this driver being installed.
Anyone have any ideas why this driver won't install for me?
Running Windows Vista SP2 and using my SE Xperia Play R800i.
Appreciate any help.

Hi guys!
Well, I'm new in what concerns to root, unlock, ROM's, kernels (no idea of what it is still), etc. I have a Xperia Arc, GB 2.3.4, branded for T-Mobile.
As I'm fed up with the bunch of bloatware, I wanted to root/debrand it, in order to get rid of it.
First I tried with this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035276 Post #2
Links for the ROM were dead, so I searched for some other thread. After a lot, I found this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042978
I found it easy to lead, so i tried. I got so far, to even unlock my bootloader, but then, trying to root, I found the images link for the Global firmware was dead.
Then I realized, I wanted to change to the global versión for the mere reason of having ICS sooner (branded phones take longer to receive it, as far as I know). Then I saw, that actually I went in the full wrong direction when unlocking the bootloader.
I tried to relock thebootloader, by following the steps in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324703
It appears to have worked well, but I'm not sure.
My questions are:
1) I want the SE ICS update, that is due to be available this month anytime. Since unlocking the bootloader might have turned my phone to brick (or not?) when upgrading, how can I be sure I did actually re-lock my bootloader? The guys from Android Soul Comnunity used a "Test" on their videos, which was running a program in fastboot mode, which apparently does something if the phone is unlocked, although it said "it needs to be rooted". Is there a way to know if I did it correctly relock whitout damaging my phone or flashing it by mistake in the process.
2) I really want to flash it to a global version and get rid of the bloatware (maybe rooted if posible), but also getting the official upgrade. Is there a way? I have the latest flashtool version and I downloaded the ftf file for the global version, but whenever I press flash in flashtool, it doesn't show anything (nor sin files or anything else). Maybe I will give it another try if someone else provides me with a functional link to the functional ROM (I really don't remember where I got the one I have).
I hope you guys can help me. I'm not a native english speaker, so forgive me for any mistake. Thanks in Advance
HerrJuancho
seems like you are new to this....so was I about 4 months ago.
if your bootloader is unlocked, good - keep it that way.
the best way to learn how to mess around is follow this thread step-by-step:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299729
I know that this thread is instructing you to flash cm7 - but dont worry, once you have done that, you will understand the basics and the processes involved.
if you really want ICS - then you can just us Arconium 2.2 as it is the closed custom rom to a stock ICS - it is tweaked and customized, so it will be better than any global rom you try to flash.

Thanks, I thought no one would answer.
I don't know if I actually still have a unlocked bootloader. How can I tell the difference? By doing what?
If it is really that good, the I would prefer it over the official. Thanks

Do this
1)Connect your phone on fastboot mode.
2) open cmd prompt in the fastboot folder
3) type this in the command window
fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce get var version
4) if you get a value like 0.3 or something its unlocked

Well, that's actually one of the steps before unlocking, I thought it was just a sign that the device was well connected and that the drivers were up to date. My phone wasn't unlocked, and it did show 0.3 right before trying to unlock it.

Ohh sorry. My bad. Try to boot a custom kernel via fastboot.
Fastboot.exe boot boot.IMG
If you get a notice "device not rooted" or similar the bootloader is loced.
If you are able to boot the kernel the bootloader is unlockd

Do you have R800a model? Did you unlocked your bootloader with testpoint?
Also, try back usb port on your motherboard, not front ones
Thanks for your reply, Yes it is a R800a, i used DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su, to unlock the phone,
i have tried back usb ports too, and well my pc does detect the device even if it is in recovery, but fastboot doesnt.

ZergRush method is just for rooting, not for "unlocking phone". Rooting is just a way to grant you root user right on your phone (and you can do it on locked bootloader, wich you obviously did). To be able to install custom kernel, you must first unlock bootloader
I don't have R800a model, so i can't help you much, but you can help yourself by reading sticky threads in "general" and "Q&A" sections to inform yourself about your phone, because R800a model is little specific (it doesn't have fastboot access, kernels can be flashed only in flash mode, and only when bootloader is unlocked via testpoint method)
Hey thanks, i didnt knew that, and well it seems that my phone is now unlocked i used wotanserver (pics below 7.99 UE not bad), i still dont have access to fastboot as you mention, now i download flashtool, and well, i am stuck what i have to do now? i have the kernel, the room, i dont know if im missing something.

You don't have fastboot, but you can stll flash kernel with flashtool in flasmode connected (back button pressed while plugging i phone)
There is thread for kernels in ftf format at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350707 that korrectmethod made for guys like you.
Thank you so much Bakisha, i finally install both kernel and rom (Doomlord V14 and AtoMic GB 7.0), it is working like a charm! my only issue is that now, when i pull the game pad, it doenst display the games to select the one i want to play, i mean the dashboard, do i need an app? anyways it looks and feel great, i was about to giving up but it worked at the end, overclock works great at 1.2 Ghz.
and well thx again!.

just download xperia play launcher from market
YW
So after a year and half with this phone, I thought about installing a better ROM.
I experience with these kind of things from the time I had the galaxy 1 and I changed tons of ROMs on that.
But the xperia seems a bit different with ROM changing.
What are some basic things I need to know, and where can I find the stock ROM (just in case)?
If this isn't the correct to forum for this post, please notify me.
ROM changing ist not very different from Samsung...
If your bootloader is unlocked and your CWM is working, then you can install all Roms as ZIP like on the Galaxy
Always make an Backup with CWM to be save and get back in case of errors, thereforce i didn't need a the stock ROM
Just have a look here on the last pages

thanks! But what I meant is that with my sgs I didn't need to open the bootloader and install CWM since it was already there.
How do I unlock the bootloader and install CWM, should I root it first?
Just have a closer look to the link mentioned above.
I postet there a link to a Guide, how to flash a custom rom (including unlocking Bootloader)
and Mirhawk gave aditional tipps
Have you bought your sgs secondhand?
Because you have to install CWM one time on your sgs, too.
And it is a similar effort to flash sgs with odin then unlocking your bootloader on the xperia S

Install ROM's in Xperia S is not difficult.
You must have Rooted your phone and Install CWM (like the comment above)
I was like you when I decided flash ROMs.
I recommend you see if your bootloader is open or not (when you verificate it, you will see in the screen of your phone BOOTLOADER UNLOCK, and then YES or NO. bootloader is easy to open when you have YES, but when it's in not is a bit complicated)
To put the BOOTLOADER UNLOCK in YES, first: you have to have your phone free (your phone have to be available to use with others companies) in my case, for example, i dont have my phone free, but to liberate it with my company, give mea code and after that I introduce it and set free the phone. (after that you will allow to open BOOTLOADER)
Here in XDA have 2 types of ROMS, to LOCK and UNLOCK bootloader, I am using TrinityVengance RaptorXL by f(x)THaxxorX, before that I used, LeopardX 5.0 by savergigio
To flash ROMs you use ClockWorldMOd, its very easy, if you need more help tell me
