[Q] Screen causes tones to caller - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there
I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but couldnt find anyone who has had the same problem.
When making a call, if my ear touches the screen, it sends MF tones to the other caller. I did get them my end, but turned off tones in menu hoping this would cure it, but now just sends them to the other end, hence i have to call people using loudspeaker!
I am probably being really stupid here, but any help would be gratefully received.
regards
rob

"You're holding the phone the wrong way : The proximity sensor is at the upper left edge of the phone, it might not register your ear near it (usually left ear).Try holding it differently or try the right ear.

This is a solution, as it works for me
BUT WTF SONY? We have to hold our phone in right ear otherwise it puts phone down/puts on hold and randomly presses other numbers.
I'm seriously pissed at my Z1C.
Touchscreen randomly stops working
Touchscreen goes crazy tapping all over the screen opening millions of apps etc
Can't hold my phone in right ear on call
WiFi downloads slower than Data Connection.
WHAT THE **** IS THIS SONY?
Seriously unimpressed... and I'm paying almost iPhone 5s price and I can guarantee this wouldn't be happening on iPhone 5s

hang up during conversation...

hi everybody!
any one can explain why the touch hd hangs up tel conversation after few sec or few mins...? it is impossible to make a full call phone, or sometimes it works fine with headset and sometime no.
thx for your help!
Are you using an old sim card?
Having been a touch screen phone user for quite a while now, on to my fourth. I have experienced this problem on every phone i've had. The cause of the problem is that i cut off the call on the screen during a call with my ear......Sounds silly but its a problem, they always seem to put an "end call" button right in the middle of the screen on these phones, very easy to push with your ear. The HD has a nice big end call button too, cut myself off on this on a few times too in the last couple of months. Maybe go back to the home screen during a call so your ears cant touch any onscreen buttons.
If your getting it during calls whith a headset then i'm talking rubish. Mybe a handset fault, have you dropped it? Dont think they like it..... Good luck.

Cheek accidentally hits "hold" button while talking?

Anyone else have this problem? I have accidentally put more people on hold by mistake than I care to admit! THis should not happen, right? I know there is a proximity sensor that turns off the screen, but sometimes, the screen comes on while I am talking, then I hit it with my cheek??
Can that button be disabled? I won't ever use it.
Are you a using a shell or case that is covering the area near where it says HTC in the top left corner of the screen? If so, that is the problem. I had to drill a hole in the case I got from my TMo dealer to allow the sensor "see" my ear to turn off the screen.
Regards,
Gordo
I dont know if it can be disable, but sometime mine hits the notification bar. What you can do is to aproximate your face while in a conversation, but not hit the phone immediately, cause the sensor has a lag time to shut off the screen. After you get used it will happen less often. Fortunately my cheek is larger and hits the screen far from the mute button Cheers
never had that kind of problem, the proximity sensor is great for me...maybe when u talk u hold the sensor part away from your ear. this had happen when i use iphone for several time.

Yea, I've gotta learn how to "hold" my phone properly, lol. My screen turns on and off randomly. I'll get the hang of it.
Or, just click the power button as you're bringing the phone to your ear. Then the screen will be off.
now that is a good idea. just turn the screen off when talking. duh....ok. thanks!
and Gordo- I replied to your thread already, so you can answer me over there. Thx.
couple of times i hit redial... my dad says "hold on there's the other line" and its ME!
now i just turn the screen off

[Q] keep screen off during a call?

does anyone know of a way or an app to keep the screen off and stay off during a call unless i hit the button to turn the screen on? the proximity sensor sucks and at least once a week i end up muting someone with my cheek without knowing it and it ends up being the 2 of us screaming "CAN YOU HEAR ME?!??! HELLO!??!? HELLO!!??!?!" ... as a matter of fact my girlfriend has it way worse with her g2. her proximity sensor is horrible and she's always putting me on hold, mute or hanging up on them.
my ideal situation (and i will love you forever if you tell me a way or an app to do this) would be if the screen turns off and stays off when on a call, but when you hit the screen on button, it bypasses the lock screen (a totally unnecessary step when you're in a call and would have had to hit a physical button on the top of the phone itself to get the screen on) and turns the screen on, ready to do whatever it is you need to do in the middle of a call.
thanks everyone.
Yeah, hit the power button once and the screen will turn off during your call.

but won't my face going against and away from the sensor eventually make the screen turn back on at some point? i haven't specifically monitored my attempts to try that, but i'm sure i've done it before and it didn't last thru the call. or it did one time and not another or something.
Works for me.

just tried that today and as soon as you take the phone away from your face the screen comes back on (so if you moved it away for a second then back, you've got a phone with a turned on screen right up against your face)
I have the same problem. I do it all the time. Suddenly can't here someone only to realize they are on hold. I'd love some sort of solution or work around as well.

[Q] Proximity sensor bug

I have a strange problem with prox sensor during calls. The actual sensor works fine, it shuts down the display but still registers touches from the keypad. I've had numerous times when the person complains that I'm pressing dial tones and when I take my phone of my ear, the display wakes up and there's all kinds of numbers and symbols on the dialing screen. If I hold my phone on an angle off my cheek, the problem doesn't occur. Anyone else?

You're holding it wrong...
Joke aside. I have the same issue when holding the phone to my left ear. I suppose i has to do with proximity sensor being on the left side, and not getting close enough to (getting covered by) my ear. In that case: Use right ear, or press the phone closer to the left side of your head (head tumor not guaranteed)
Could this be the issue?
I do have this problem and I don't want to have head tumor. rofl

I also get this !! Seriously annoying.
You'll be chatting away, next thing you know "Beep Beep Beep" as though your dialing someone else.
Like, DAMN ear, who you calling that so important you can't wait till I've finished my conversation?
The screen IS off when this is happening, I can see the screen in the corner of my ear and its all black but still registers touches

+1 here. It happens to me oftentimes when i'm talking then suddenly there's silence and when i look at the screen the hold button is pressed and the call is placed on hold. I do use my phone on my left side frequently. I guess i haven't used it on my right ear at all. I'm not really sure if that matters, would try and check on it next call.

[Q] Accidentally putting calls on hold

I love the Note 5, but I keep accidentally putting calls on hold when using it in the "traditional" way - putting the phone to my ear.
I've discovered that somehow the screen is coming back to life while I talk - and I'm accidentally touching the "On Hold" virtual button on the call screen in the upper right corner.
I feel a bit stupid even posting this, but the Note 5 is my first Lollipop and phablet experience. I don't remember the "On Hold" button even showing up on my GSIV call screen. Could it be a proximity sensor issue?
Has anyone else experienced this and if so, is there a fix?
Yes, your proximity sensor may be defective. My screen stays off when I hold the phone to my ear.
As a mitigation, you could try keeping your fingers on the side of the phone, off the screen, and lower than where the hold button is; also, hold the phone at an angle, with only the top edge held against your ear.
I have the same problem...the proximity sensor is fine, screen does go blank when on call..but nearly every day, maybe due to angle I hold phone which makes it think I am not on the phone! It keeps going on hold. Any way to resolve? Or any workarounds people have done? Really annoying, sometimes happens 2-3 times on the same call!!!
I am having the same issue. Any fix for this?
Could glass screen protector be causing this?
