Ive been plagued by the thought that the damn dock should...by all accounts have a USB out. Now I suppose that it may have came down to a decision point of "Which is the more likely scenario... audio out or USB to a computer out", but I find myself squarely in the "dont care about audio" side of that debate.
The idea would be to crack this little sucker open, see whats inside and (hopefully) take the micro-usb connection that it has out the back of the dock with a new tip.
Now that Ive opened it up, I believe I can get there. I'll tinker around with it in the next few days to verify things like theres no "control" (or similar) signal running through the USB connections from a power perspective and whatnot. If I can do it, it will be my intent to make it look as stock as I can and I'll be sure to post any walkthroughs, pics, etc that somebody else might want.
To open it up, you have to remove the rubber pad from the bottom. Its got a lot of adhesive on it and (at least in my case) looks like something that I can successfully stick back on.
Under that, you'll find what appears to be depressions in the plastic bottom. Take a utility knife (or similar) and cut around the edges of the depressions. They are part of a plastic film that I saw absolutely no reason to be afraid of removing.
Once the holes are exposed, you'll need a T4 bit to remove the screws. Then you can just open it up.
Thats the extent of my exploration so far...
Heres a pic:
While you are at it...
Would you mind checking which of the connectors for charging is (+) and which is (-)? If I am really trying to build that alternative charger connector then I'll need to know. Thanks man!

This will come in handy when the time is right! :thumb up:
as far as i can tell all you would need to do is make sure there is enuff room and put a male to female cable inside. No need to mess with the board inside.
I think you've got a great idea. Any Progress yet.
Thanks for posting this picture. I'm going to do a straightforward mod by simply drilling a hole out the backside of the dock, running the wire through the hole and soldering the leads together. This method keeps me from having to dremel an exact fit USB-A connection and providing an internal support for the port.
Oooooh yeah, mine will be ghetto rigged tonight. I'll order a female mini USB socket from digikey or somewhere to make it a little better in the future - but for tonight its getting hacked together.
Thanks for the pic, it was just enough encouragement to take it apart.
I'm tempted to buy the cradle, is there any way you can take a picture of the front and back of the PCB, I'm curious if there are existing pads for the USB cable.
I'm also curious about the possibility of adding a micro HDMI connection to the standard dock to make a "Swiss Army" dock, those pictures would help be get a better idea if I should buy this dock or the HDMI dock.
I don't understand why Moto didn't make a dock with power, HDMI, USB, and headphone. Then you can keep everything hooked to the dock and add/remove the device as desired. This is how most PC docks work. Is there a technical issue that would preclude all ports being brought out from the bottom connections (understanding the devices headphone jack is on the top)??
A design issue I see as far as wear and tear is the lack of docking "keys" built into the bottom of the device to aid in port alignment. It seems like getting the right alignment will be hit and miss and could put undo stress on the ports.
You were using a nail clipper to open it?
If I spend the cash for a moto brand dock, I am going to add a fullsize USB/HDMI and power to it. There is no excuse for not including these.
Do it and post the instructions, I want

Hi, I'm bumping this thread to ask if there's any chip or so in the dock to control the audio? I would lika to make a microUSB to 3.5mm cable to avoid the distrubances from the wifi in the badly insulated headphone-port.
I imagine there must be since usb is a digital signal and headphones use analog signals. Maybe I should go all the way and make a pocket amp instead
Thanks
So I have the official car dock:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ECS-K1D9BEGSTA
And love the functionality of not having to plug in power or audio out all the time.
My only issue is that I want to be able to extend the arm length as it doesn't fit any where great in my car.
Has anyone seen a vent mount or extending arm accessory that is compatible with the official holster?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. I'm sure I could get creative with a solution but didn't want to reinvent the wheel if there is something out there already.
Nice! Is that mount horizontal only, or can it rotate to hold the phone upright too?

It can fully rotate 360 degrees and pivot in any direction. The holster is attached to the arm via a ball and socket connection so you have virtually unlimited options of angle etc... and then you just turn a knob to 'lock in' the position you like. I definitely worship the dock, just need a longer arm : (
OK one other question....if you have a case on your phone, do you have to take it off to use the dock? It looks like you would.
I searched around to try and find a longer arm, and no luck

Thanks for trying to help.
You definitely can't use a case.
The fit is meant to be 'perfect' so it's easy to lock in your phone with the microusb plug so power and audio work.
I love it!!! but no case would work.
Unless you can find a way to mount the flat circle to a longer arm and suction to that there isn't a viable arm extension. I have looked also. My maxima gives a long reach to the dock to where I like the mount to sit.
I bought the infuse dock but instead of using the arm that came with it I bought a proclip center console mount for my car. Looks nice and works great although it was expensive. Attached the infuse dock to proclip car mount and a proclip swivel mount.
I have the Infuse mount which I'm guessing has the same design as yours. Anyway, I found that the vent clip mount that I've been using for my Galaxy Tab mates perfectly to the Infuse mount. I can't be positive but this looks like the same vent mechanism.
Looks like I'm not allowed to post links so search for "Black Car Air Vent Holder With Clip For Nokia " on ebay and you should find it for $3.34.
Sorry to be off topic, but does the car dock have a cut out for the camera lens? I'm not sure from the pic.

Awesome thanks! Might have to pick this up then!
so, i have a meta question about this dock. it looks pretty cool, and it *might* work to put it vertically in the space in the center console of my '98 honda accord, hopefully putting it right at my fingertips. that part's a crap shoot however. what i don't understand though is the audio out jack. how the heck does that work?? the audio jack on the phone is at the top, but the audio jack on the dock is on the bottom next to the usb plug. i just don't get how they route the audio out there. this might be a stupid question.

The phone only needs to be plugged into the microusb port on the dock for both power and audio to be piped through. The actual headset jack on the phone is not used. So phone goes into dock (just microusb port) then the audio out on the dock will work.

The desk dock works the same way. Only USB plugs into the phone, but the audio jack on the back of the dock does route the sound to external speakers.
This dock and mount is way better than that one. Plus ball locking might fit yours.

Wow.. I'm glad you posted.. I just started to search to see if audio via the usb was possible and wasn't finding anything. Couple of questions..is there a usb/line out volume adjustment or is it fixed? Also.. I already have a micro usb hard wired in my car.. is it a micro usb on the end of the cigarette lighter adapter? Also are these available at any local stores.. just hoping I could pick one up instead of ordering.. I checked the local Sprint store and they just have the universal mount kits. thanks for any info!

the dock that's specifically for the E4G includes a cig lighter power adapter, but the infuse version does not. i have power going to the infuse from cig lighter, then a standard audio cable going from the back of the dock to my car radio. works well. the volume level adjustment has to be done in software. i'm currently evaluating CarHome Ultra, which has configurations so that when you put the phone in the dock, it sets media volume to whatever you desire, then when you remove the phone from the dock, it reverts back to what it was.
---------- Post added at 11:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 AM ----------
one thing that kind of baffles me with the dock - when my phones in the dock, if i try to speak commands to it, it seems it can't hear me. the phone's microphone is covered by the adapter block you slide in to lock the phone and make usb connection. i have the infuse dock, but it looks identical to the E4G-specific dock.
does anyone else have trouble speaking commands when docked? it's frustrating, it makes it much less of a hands-free experience than what i was hoping for!

Seems like most people use some form of case (thicker than the zagg)
Does anyone know of a dock like this samsung dock but able to fit a phone with a case? Alternatives (docks that work with a case) dont seem to connect automatically to the micro usb. Just wondering if anyone knows of something that will do both? Shouldn't this exist? am I way off?
Hi,
I want to have only 1 plug to insert in the Samsung Galaxy S2 to have:
- Audio output
- AND power charging
This is possible by using the micro-usb port of the Samsung Galaxy S2.
This is how the official Samsung docks works: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ECR-D1D3BEGSTA )
But I am not looking for a dock, I just want a cable ! (it is much more convenient than a dock)
This cable would be like this:
Code:
|---------> Audio output jack
Micro-USB <---|
|---------> Standard USB (type A)
Where can I buy such a cable ?
Regards, Chris
I guess you have to make one yourself. It shouldn't be too difficult.
You just have to solder a 365K resistor to the ID pin of the micro usb plug. Then solder The data pins and the ground pin to a 3.5mm socket. At last you need to solder the +5V pin and the ground pin to the USB plug.
I have to say I like the Idea of such a cable, I think i'm goibg to make one.
I got the official vehicle dock and the sound coming from the line out isn't so good compared to the headphone jack. I'm wondering if the components within the dock is to blame or the phone itself (kernel?)
If the OP does find a cable that does the job I'd be keen to know how it turns out.

I am very surprised, no one is manufacturing such a cable. I am sure there is a big business for it.
I have never soldered anything. It is possible to make 2, one for me as well ? I would be very happy! I am based in Paris.

The quality should be good, as Samsung is selling a docking stations to output the sound on a hifi system. Bad sound quality is not noticeable on basic headphones, but on a hifi system that would be catastrophic (so Samsung would not sell docking stations).

You need an amp to improve the sound from the line out since it is unfiltered and not treated through the phone's yamaha pre amp.

Ahh, the cmoy, very cool headphone amp. I have a DIY AMB mini3 with an Alien dac connected to my computer. Now with the info from this thread, I really want line out! Though I must admit, 2.3.5 with poweramp sounds really good.
Ok the Cable is finished, when plugging the cable in the phone automatically enters dock mode and outputs audio via the micro-USB port.
Quality is OK I guess (I will compare it to the quality of the 3.5mm headphone-jack output), but keep in mind that I'm not an audiophile .
The build quality of my cable is not great, but it was more or less just a proof of concept.

That looks very promising, thank you for sharing!
Keep in mind, line out is unfilter, unamp audio output, so the sound will sound a bit bland. One must plug an amp into it to "color" the sound.
Good on you, wurzelsepp3. As for the audio quality between the headphone jack and line out I'm pretty sure you'll notice it but it shouldn't be a problem if you just want the functionality.
I just tested the cmoy amp in my car and it sounds good now.

Can you post how you built it ? I am not good at electronics.
I guess you have taken:
- a USB (type A) cable
- a jack cable
- and a micro-USB
and then cut all of them to just keep the plugs. But then how did you joined the different cables together and how did you installed the resistor ?

Yes the only difference between car and desk-dock mode is the resistor value.
1) Yes the USB-plugs only purpose in this setup is to supply power, so any charger will do the job
2) Yes, but you have to keep in mind that the sund coming out of the micro usb port isn't amplified, so sound quality and volume are rather low, so you might wanna use an external headphone amplifier
3) Yes, as car and external audio systems have a amplifier it should work quite well.
Would something like this work?

Finally I made my own style 3 in 1 Dock station, includes Car dock, Home dock and auxiliary audio out with the help of selector switch. Conversion of car dock to home dock by sliding the selector switch, also possible to charge the phone from home or Car dock mode. Auxiliary audio sound is nice to hear and All items compacted in small case.
Thanks for all, to give me such idea and sketches.
Are all the micro-USB to 3.5mm jack you find on eBay the same? Do they have the same pinout/resistance required for use on the SGS2?
I searched around for some better headphones for my galaxy S3 (GT-I9300), to unleash the full music experience the phone got. As I prefer a more powerful earphone I feel not as comfortable with the sound of the original ones, but I don’t wanted to lose the comfort of the Samsung Headset - Microphone and Remote control.
As you can see here, I changed the original Samsung headset cable to a pair of Sennheiser Headphones. In case you are interested in doing the same here is what I Did.
What i used:
A Pair of Samsung Headset Headphones, in my Case Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300)
A Pair of Headphones, as shown in the Pictures a Sennheiser CX 300-II
A Solder Station, a bit of soldering wire
A Tool called third Hand, or another little vice
Fine Pliers and a little slot screw driver
A Voltmeter
Just to ensure. I am not responsible for any injuries, damages and defects on the headphones, your mobile, other components or your health. The following hints worked for me and my equipment, yours may be different.
If you aren’t use in Voltmeter testing’s, soldering and fine mechanical works you shouldn’t do this.
First I dismounted the silicone Ear Adapters from all headphones. Then I used the pliers to demount the Samsung headphones. In My case I grabbed the stick where the Ear Adapter was on and ripped it off. I have no further use for them, so I broke its housing.
Inside the Cables are mounted on the speaker. I used the solder station, to liquefy the soldered cable connection from the speaker.
In next step I opened the cable knot and got the cable out of the Samsung housing.
Openig the Sennheiser Headphones:
I used my fingernails to get of the silver ring of the housing, maybe also a guitar plektron will do the same. In my case it worked when I turned it around while pressing my nails in.
Please see Picture 1
With the little slot screw driver I opened up the in key and slot position of the housing.
Please see Picture 2 and 3
I also used the solder station, to liquefy the soldered cable connection from the speaker.
I noted myself on which connection which colour of wire was. On the back side of the Sennheiser Speaker there was a red sign on one of the contacts.
I opened the knot and pulled out the cable. Then I inserted the white Samsung cable in the rubber bumper. I think its important to make sure inserting the right side of the Samsung cable into the right side of the new Earphone. To ensure better gliding I used a little of my wives hand cream on the cable.
When mounted the cable in the headphone, I fastened it again with a knot. I had to be carful, the cable isn’t as strong as it seems.
This is the pin configuration I measured on my headphones. As I heard that there is more than one pin configurations in different countries, please ensure what’s yours. So the wire connection I made may differ to the one which is the correct in your case.
Please see Picture 4
Soldering, I made,
Please see Picture 5
Right Headphone:
In my case I attached the red wire of the Samsung headset cable on the Sennheiser headphone at the solder position where the red dot was.
Left Headphone:
I attached the green wire of the Samsung headset cable on the Sennheiser headphone at the solder position where the red dot was.
Please see Picture 6
Reassembling should be no problem then.
Have fun with your modified headphones.
Please see Picture 7

I think the originals are ok but, I'm am a bit of ambitious in music, the original samsungs speaker don't have such powerful bass and not so clear highs. So they don't give a good picture of what a great sound experience the Phone itselve provides.
If you buy a original Headset at Amazon its about 5€, the Senheiser are 35€. There might be the difference from .

I don't understand though why you used the samsung cord couldn't you have just bought headphones from amazon that had their own cord? Or did you have to have the samsung cord because of the plug to match the microphone? Thanks

Nice job. Thanks for sharing.
Ok so here's my predicament. The way I can plug my phone's audio into my car is through a 3.5mm plug into the headphone jack. This wire is coming out from behind the stereo unit and I have to completely remove the unit if I wanted to put a different wire in back there which would be a major pain. Now before I had no problem hooking that plug into my S3, but now that I got an extended battery with a different case, the hole around the headphone jack on the new case is too small to allow the plug to plug in fully. So I was wondering does anyone know of a 3.5mm female to male plug that I can order, where the male end has as little rubber around the tip as possible so it will actually fit in this case? I've been searching myself but its kind of a hard thing to search for, with the proper wording and everything. So I was hoping maybe one of you have had a similar situation and have found a wire that fits these needs.
Thanks!
This guy's cables are pretty thin:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Sound-Vision-/293/i.html?_ipg=&_sac=1&_from=&_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ssn=mpas2010
There's also this other cable (kensington/belkin make similar ones) that has the plastic/rubber stripped from the base of the connector which should allow it to dive deeper in to your case and make a full connection in side the minijack. I have a case that this doesnt quite work on but it will work for most:

thanks guys. i think this markertek one is probably gonna be the one i try. i need it to be male-female or just an adapter like this (assuming this fits properly with my case). i'd rather not get a whole new male to male wire because that would mean i'd need to take apart my whole front panel on my car again to replace the wire.
i'm gonna give this one a try and if it doesn't work, i guess i'll just start saving up for a new stereo with bluetooth so i don't have to worry about it anymore haha.

I don't have any experience buying from them. I just did a quick search because I think I know what you are looking for and came up with that. You might check your local Radio Shack to see if they have a similar adapter that will fit.
Just google female to recessed male 3.5 and you'll find many places to purchase including amazon
