Start by saying I'm very new about Android and smartphone in general.
Four days ago I got my first smartphone, a Xperia Play model R800i and some friends suggested me to install ICS. I searched on the internet and I have found the Xperia Play Development forum. There, I found a really interesting ROM called "New Express ICS".
I downloaded all the files and I started to follow the guide. I'm stuck at the second point (I believe this is ridiculous): I can't get into the Recovery Mode and I didn't get if I can flash the custom kernel (bootics.img) on flash tool.
I haven't rooted my phone, it's 100% virgin, yet.
Can someone explain me what to do? I'm searching answer here and on google for three days and I'm getting even more confused.

Thanks for the link, it's very useful! Just a question: what do you mean with "read the root"? I have to root the phone?
I rooted my phone and I found the superuser app on this. Then, I unlocked the bootloader and the superuser app disappered, is it normal?
One more thing, how I flash the custom kernel and the ROM, now?

I see you unlock your bootloader, good job! Place the ROM zip into your SD card first. Next, to get into recovery mode, just fastboot the kernel you want.
-Power off phone.
-Hold search button while connecting to PC via USB
-Open flashtool, click the thunderbolt icon, select fastboot
-Select kernel to flash (select your kernel bootics.img)
-Wait for 2 seconds and voila!
After that, power on your phone, when blue LED lights up with a vibration, spam volume button / back button (depends on kernel) then you'll be able to enter recovery

Which kernel you flash is depended on the rom you want to use it with, you need to flash a GB kernel if you want to use GB rom, ICS kernel for ICS, etc, although some kernel are compatible with both ICS and JB. Search the development section for kernels and roms. If you flash a rom and it fail to boot, it mean the kernel currently installed is not compatible with that rom.
About ClockworkMod Recovery:
If you flash a custom kernel, it will likely have ClockworkMod Recovery included. Or if you are using stock Sony firmware, use the "CWM installer version 5" from this link to install CWM. Sometimes you will get a status 7 error when you try flashing a rom, it might mean you have to use a different version of ClockworkMod to flash that rom successfully.

Also, he says to use fastboot package that I have already used to unlock the bootloader.

Flash boot.img in Flashtool/Fastboot as instructions above from jeff7424:good:Zip files are what you put on your sd card and flash with cwm recovery, these can be either roms, updates to roms,zip files to change appearance, performance tweaks, too many to mention.
So .img and .ftf files use in Flashtool/Fastboot and zip files use on SD card to flash with CWM recovery.
Not to complicate it too much sometimes the boot.img comes in a .zip file you need to extract this to use in flashtool/fastboot with winra/7z unzip programs
Edit; Busybox download it with Superuser app on your phone or download a app from store to update your busybox

You can get busybox from Play Store, just search Busybox installer, install it, open the app and install busybox.

What do you mean with: Do not keep phone plugged in while rebooting into CWM, phone may loose the ability to boot into cwm, reinstalling the root and CWM does not fix it. Also xparts does not boot inot CWM. full wipe is needed. (I saw that in the cwm tópic)
Other thing, what is CW? Cw10 and cw10.1
What is kernel used for? I read the most part of the people use doomkernel. Whats the benefits and cons? Do I have to unlock the bootloader to change the stock kernel for that? If not, how can I install it? How can I save a backup with all the factory settings, fw, kernel...??

They are both recoveries to flash custom roms/kernels. "TWRP=Team Win Recovery" is touch screen, while "CWM=Clockwork Mod Recovery" is not. The do have the same functions, just different ways of accessing each function. Better is relative, because developers may suggest one or the other. Yes both can be installed on a locked bootloader on your device, but installed through your PC.

Not sure about this one, but my guess is you mean CM10/CM10.1. If so it is a Custom rom "Clockwork Mod" by developers who started in the Early days of android, since that was the only custom rom available most users tend to prefer that to other. So developers now let the users know if it has a similar feel to it.

Kernel is what lets you tweak certain aspects of your phone which are not allowed. Custom kernels give added functionality as well as controlling some behavior of the phone. (Not 100% sure about this one.)

You will have to install flashtool on your PC, Locked bootloader or not. This is the only program that can transfer and install firmware files on you device. To root, there a multiple methods to so, but require a specific firmware version to be on the device, which is where flashtool comes in. TWRP/CWM will then be installed on your device to allow you to install custom roms.

Flashtool is the only program that can transfer and install firmware files on you device, and must be installed on PC. TWRP/CWM are recoveries used to add mods, install roms, create backups of all files and settings (incase of issues with roms) and must be installed on Device.

What happened:
1. Used TWRP to flash an earlier System backup
2. Boots but two system apps force close and phone reboots
3. This goes on indefinitely
4. Can no longer go to either recovery
I'm thinking I should use FlashTool and flash a default System for 14.5.A.0.270 but I can't seem to find any firmware image for it. Does anybody have this/better idea to get me out of the boot loop?
Edit: found the file, will report back.

If possible, yes. My last complete backup was on September. I'm still waiting for the firmware download to finish, however if I that doesn't work (won't allow me to flash) I am completely OK with wiping everything.

I wasn't sure from the first post. Does the phone stay on if you don't do anything or does it automatically reboot? I was thinking a good first try might be NUT dual recovery installer, but won't work if phone won't stay on. Check back after your flash attempt - note that you will likely wipe all of your data if flashing with FT.

It won't stay on. It will crash then reboot.
Can't proceed with flashtool because I am having trouble installing the drivers (on w10)

If you can't boot, you might be able to save data through adb. If you give up on saving data, either Emma or PC Companion can repair phone if you can't get FT to work. Since they're both official Sony programs, they may be easier to get working with Win10.

Which fw did you flash? If it's 5.1, (368 at least, not sure about 216), I've read that Kingroot method is working now. Look here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/general/root-14-6-0-368-via-kingroot-t3242735 . If 5.0, there is a root tool that will work. Once rooted, flash NUT's installer for recovery.

I tried flashing the early pre-rooted 5.1s and they gave me problems with NFC so I reverted to 5.0.1
Looking for the 5.0 root tool right now.

Haven't tried it myself, but it seems like they've got it working. I noticed in the thread that there seems to be different instructions for 368 and 216....

I got everything back to 270 now. Currently at the optimizing apps part. This all began because I upgraded SD cards and while everything was carried over through a plain copy-paste, my Walkman playlists and favorites didn't make it. I somehow equated the System portion as a possible fix.
Anyway are you on 5.1? Does NFC unlock works? Thanks for pointing me at the right direction.

Haven't had any problems with 5.1. I flashed stock .216 few a week ago, and have since rooted, modded, etc., and everything good. Your problems were probably related to PRF. I've read the same from others

The latest I tried was .380
King root
I had a similar problem last night. Installed stock firmware off flashtool then loaded it up and King Root worked perfectly. Having trouble getting a recovery on the phone now.

Use 'installer' option from Z1c downloads on NUT's download page. It's never failed for me. Just watch phone screen and grant 'OK' for adb access and for root. Besides that, if you have unlocked bl, use fastboot or Rashr.

Yeah i had tried that. The BAT right? I ended up flashing multi twrp and then using that to get NUT's, he's made a sweet recovery.

I want to root it because of Greenify and Xposed,to increase the battery time,maybe later to flash some rom but...
There is a lot of topics on this subject,I started to read but I'm lost right now...as far as I saw,I can't root Marshmallow without unlocking the bootloader,only Lollipop,right?
Is it a big trouble to go back from MM to LP?
I'm not new in this flashing and rooting stuff,I had (still have) a Motorola Razr XT910,I flashed it 100 times for sure for 3.5 years but I didn't had to unlock the bootloader (it's impossible anyway) and there's a custom recovery Safestrap,modified Twrp which allows to flash and use 6 different roms,from JB to MM,without changing the kernel...
I will be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction,to give me some useful links etc.
And is there some list which procesess are safe to freeze with TB and which ones I can greenify?
Oh,and the bloatware too...

root without unlocking bootloader works only on lollipop, right. Not sure if u can downgrade, but when, u will use "LGUP" tool with the "H81510D.kdz" file. Maybe there exists a pre-rooted kdz to flash.
If u want to root android 6, u need a unlocked bootloader. Rooted Android 5.1.1 or unlock bootloader with rooted android 6.x.x

Flash SuperSu+Twrp with stock recovery?
Install Twrp with adb command and then flash SuperSu with Twrp?
Install both with adb command?
I also saw somewhere that I must flash some other kernel that is already rooted...
I just need root and the Xposed for now,help me guys!

In my case I wasn't able to flash recovery on the stock kernel, I had to flash boot.img unpacked from the custom kernel like SimpleGX and only then I was able to flash recovery and full kernel through it.

As for viper4android i tried normal way, flashed it with twrp, flashed extreme music mod with v4a fix. None seem to work. The drivers never get installed.
Xposed i haven't tried. I was in process of getting more information about it by reading various threads. But all seem to point to problems like bootloop, fc and Bluetooth issues. Can you guide me towards the best version of xposed for v20d with way to avoid problems or with as less problems as possible?

Flash Imperium Kernel or SimpleGX Kernel. I used their kernels and ROMS on my older phones, they are legend. I suggest you to flash Imperium Rom. It includes kernel and everything and it is updated regularly by its dev.

I think doesn't need to install recovery to root the phone.
Just this:
1) adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot boot TWRP-2-8.7.0-h815.img
Wait a second and it will open, on the phone, the recovery.
Once open go to Advanced -> ADB sideload and take a swipe to start it where it says "Swipe to Start sideload".
Now on the PC write
3) adb sideload BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247.zip
( If it says after the instalation to install supersu etc just abort it)
And then, when installation is complete, press "Reboot System"
I rooted it this way, without install TWRP Recovery

Yeah - but the question has to be asked - why unlock the bootloader and root and not install TWRP? If you've got as far as unlocking the bootloader you might as well make life easier for yourself and install TWRP - that way anything you want to flash in the future can be done without being tethered to the PC, and also allows you to take proper full system image backups etc.

Of course , i agree with you. By the way, we can't root g4 on m6 without unlocked bootloader.
And finally, i decided to pass twrp on my phone, for every file i want to install from twrp, and not every time to boot from pc

I've got my first HTC device some days ago (-> HTC 10), but coming from a Nexus 5 where things are handled differently, I'm currently quite confused on how all of this works with my HTC 10.
I'd like to apologize in advance if the following questions seem to be stupid or unnecessary, but I'd like to use my device to the fullest and therefore I need your help.
My device is not branded (as far as I can tell) and I've already unlocked it via the steps on htcdev.com + I've installed TWRP + SuperSU (thanks to my previous knowledge with my N5 this was somewhat easy).
Now I got my first OTA update and this is when things got complicated. Several questions popped up and I tried to answer them myself while looking over here, but after reading all those threads I'm even more confused than before :/
My questions are the following:
1) Is there any way to manually update your device with the newest OTA update WITHOUT losing any data? (see question 2)
2) Do I need a microSD card in order to do so? I've seen several YT videos where they did a backup of the current system, but there still was a data wipe after flashing, so why even bother doing a backup at all?
3) My device is unlocked but with S-ON. Do I need S-OFF after all? As far as I can tell I don't need this, but is there any scenario I'd probably need it? (see question 4)
4) I'm thinking about getting a custom rom (Leedroid seems to be pretty decent). Can you recommend any of those custom roms and do I need S-OFF in order to flash them?
5) S-OFF + Locked or S-OFF + Unlocked? What's the difference? Any issues with the warranty?
6) If I do use a custom rom (e.g. Leedroid), is there also a way to update it to further versions without losing any data?
7) Where do I get the latest firmware for manually updating my device? I've already found a thread for it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/stock-stock-collection-recovery-ruu-ota-t3359297), but my current firmware (1.90.401.5) or the one for the OTA update that already popped up (1.95.401.3) isn't listed over there. 8) One last general question: as far as I understand it, unlocking your device is also the same as debranding it? I'm not sure if I'm mixing things up when reading about this. Is there any way to see if my device was branded before I did unlock/root it though?
I'm completely fine with losing my current data if that means that I can set it up my device in such a way that I can avoid any further data wipes when flasing/updating.
I'd be absolutely grateful if someone would answer those questions and help me to understand all of this.

1) Yes..you can apply the OTA manually, which won't flash the firmware image in the update but you can then find a no-wipe version of the new firmware on xda and flash it. Check out the faq in the twrp thread
2) for flashing firmware packages generally yes its better to have an SD card but I *think* it's possible to do it by issuing fastboot commands
3) s-off is needed if you wanna flash a new firmware I believe

SD card is not a requirement but is recommended since a full back-up size is ranging from 5gb-10gb maybe more depending in how many apps you installed. Backup is also recommended so you can always go back/restore your working ROM in case you messed up updating.

You need s-off mostly on updating your firmware or converting your device to other carrier or if you want to be unlocked. Right now you can flash any custom roms you like since we do not have a major update yet eg.1.x to 2.x. Once 2.x firmware is released, You can easily flash this firmware. But if you're S-ON, you can only update your firmware via official OTA from your carrier or if @Sneakyghost provide specific firmware for your carrier (matching cid and mid) in this thread else you're stock at 1.x firmware and ROMs that will only work on that specific firmware.

When using a custom ROM, is it also possible to save your data so you can restore it after the full wipe?

As far as I can tell, when doing a backup, you dont save your data 'partition' as it is encrypted anyways. Do I assume right that when doing a backup, I cannot restore my data I had before doing the flash?

I've already seen the sunshine thread which is about turning S-OFF. While it is possible to go back to S-ON, it was recommended to let your device stay in S-OFF. Is there a high risk in bricking your device when trying to go back to S-ON?

Sorry this might be a rather dumb question, but I always thought ROM and firmware are the same thing. Or is it that updating my device via OTA is updating my firmware, while installing something like Leedroid is altering my ROM?

its possible but there's possibility that you might have some issue. Not sure though, never done that. I always use titanium backup to restore my apps.

I would say NO. I never used sunshine to s-off. I am using a hardware s-off and I did not experience any issue going back to s-on.

On the device itself, I don't think so as long as you return it in full stock state. But if I remember correctly HTC dev requires you to provide your imei when requesting for unlock token bin file used to unlock bootloader, So if your unlock you device via HTC dev they have your imei in their record. They know that you already unlocked your device and warranty is void already.

Updating via official OTA usually updates ROM and firmware.
Installing a custom rom does not update firmware. Yes, it only alters ROM. But your ROM should always match your firmware at least the first digit of the firmware version (eg. 1.xx). For instance Android N (firmware veraion to be 2.x) arrives and LeeDroid updates its ROM to this, to be able to flash this latest custom rom, your firmware should also be at latest 2.x firmware else it will not boot. In this case, you need to update your firmware either via OTA, Fastboot or RUU.

1. First step is to unlock bootloader:
a) If bootloader unlock is turned off on your phone, you need to turn it on first:
- Boot to Android OS and perform initial setup if necessary
- Go to Menu -> Developer settings and tick "Enable OEM unlock"
Run XTC 2 Tool and open "Bootloader unlock" tab, follow instructions to unlock your bootloader.
2. Reboot to download mode, open "HTC 10" tab and install twrp recovery, you can get it here:

Yeah, I've done it this way. Sucks. But maybe it's not this bad at all. As I'm trying to be safe anyway, I probably only need to make use of the warranty if I'd accidentally drop my device. Those cases are still valid for warranty as far as I can tell (extract from the htcdev.com site: 'Please understand that you will not be able to return your device to the original state and going forward your device may not be held covered under the warranty for all claims resulting from the unlocking of the bootloader.'). Do you also know anything about this?

Good to know. So in order to use the latest Leedroid and get rid of that OTA update notification, I should do the following:
1) Go back to stock (flash via RUU)
2) Hardware S-OFF (see above)
3) Flash latest OTA update
4) Custom Recovery again (TWRP) + Root (SuperSU)
5) Install latest Leedroid (have to read about it first, but afaik I have to install the zip of it via TWRP)
6) done
Is this correct or are there any mistakes?

If you are stock with only SU, then this is how I've gone about installing OTAs without wiping data:
1. Download ota (Settings>About>Software Updates) and move downloaded OTA from /data/data/com.htc.updater/files to sd card
2. In TWRP restore stock 'System Image' and 'Boot'
3. Reboot to Downloader
4. Flash stock recovery (fastboot.exe flash recovery xxx.img) --> can use current ota.zip > extract firmware.img from zip (if using 7zip -> rename .zip to .rar to extract fw)
5. Reboot to stock recovery
6. Install OTA in stock recovery
7. Reboot to Downloader

This sounds very convenient and not far too different than what I was used to with my N5. Guess I'll give it a go! Already found a way to disable the HTC lock screen http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/disable-htc-10-lockscreen-t3418108 (which is annoying especially when using a different launcher as the lock screen background is still the one from the stock launcher). Only thing bugging me now is that BoomSound notification, but I guess I can live with that

Now I've already got my first (and hopefully only) issue with it: I did no backup when I first installed TWRP and before I've rooted my device. Link didn't work on my app so can't confirm if that will work. However any TWRP stock backup that matches your current version should work. RUUs will wipe your data if you use them.
Definitely good idea to backup after each ota before modifying system partition to make next ota easier. Though usually someone on here can provide a backup if you don't get one.

If you mean OTA notification from HTC, most of the custom ROMs already disabled that, I believe. And they provide you with their own OTA update (Not all, some do. Like ViperRom)
I should do the following:
1) Go back to stock (flash via RUU)
2) Hardware S-OFF (see above)
3) Flash latest OTA update
4) Custom Recovery again (TWRP) + Root (SuperSU)
5) Install latest Leedroid (have to read about it first, but afaik I have to install the zip of it via TWRP)

This is correct but there is an easier way after you s-offed.
1. Download the latest firmware.zip, if you're not on the latest yet. Flash it via fastboot commands in download.
mode. Instruction is available in the link I provided earlier in @Sneakyghost firmware thread.
2. Flash TWRP.
3. Download your desired custom ROM (LeeDroid). This is in .zip file.
4. Reboot to recovery, wipe data/factory reset then flash the LeeDroid.zip. Just follow the instructions in aroma.
by the way, if you'll flash firmware.zip make you select the matching CID and MID of your device. You might end up bricking your device flashing a wrong firmware. If you can provide me your CID and MID, I'll link you to the correct firmware for your device. To do so, reboot to bootloader and type the following commands in cmd, remove your IMEI and SN and post the result here.

I never done updating software via HTC official update. I don't know but for me I don't see any reason sticking to stock ROM. There are a lot of custom ROMs out there tweaked for better performance and battery life. They are also always updated to latest build.

I love using stock android, that's why I also loved using my Nexus 5. I used CyanogenMod with another device many years ago but I am willing to use a custom ROM for my HTC 10, but only after I already know how it feels with stock ROM. So I will stick with it for several weeks and see how it feels, and when I'm farmiliar with it, I will switch to a custom ROM So thanks a lot, you've given me a lot of information I will still need for further experimenting with my phone!
Piggybacking on this thread because my new-to-me HTC 10 is coming in the mail and I'm planning what to do with it. It is already bootloader unlocked and s-off. I would like to use Leedroid, ElementalX, Magisk, and Xposed.
I've never had an HTC device so I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. So I think this is what I need to do:
1) Flash TWRP via ADB
2) Flash SuperSU in TWRP
3) Flash everything else...Leedroid, ElementX, Xposed, Magisk. In that order? Can I flash them all at once (just keep adding zips to the TWRP list) or do I have to boot between each one?
Xposed is more important to me than a custom ROM, because I need to use Amplify and PowerNap to improve my battery life. Would it be better just to stay on stock instead of Leedroid?

No need to flash SuperSU via recovery since LeeDroid has root already.
You can flash everything at once.

When I said stock ROM, i meant stock HTC ROM and it's not stock Android. It's a skinned android called HTC sense. . If you want a stock android to run in your HTC 10 you can flash a AOSP based custom ROM.

Ah yeah, sorry, fastboot is what I meant. Thank you! I haven't had an unlocked bootloader in quite a while (was using TWRP and Sony stock-based ROMs on a locked Z3c), so it will be interesting to flash kernels and such again.

not only bootloader, it contains everything. radio.img and any other thing. "low-lewel-stuff", kernel etc, recovery (if stock signed firmware, which is not modded/removed). there are many important things inside.
but firmware is meant for every device the same. it contains everything so that this device can run/work properly.
