I want to root my phone, but from what I read, the XTC clip is for unlocking the sim card, that I simply called Verizon and they unlocked mine while I was on the phone with them.
So, back to what I want, Root, what do I need to accomplish this?
You need more research. Xtc clip uses the sim card slot to obtain s-off through the hardware to allow you to install a rooted rom

xtc clip does radio s-off, the sim cable simulates an engineering sim. it just so happens that a result of that is full sim unlock as well.

Thanks for the info, I did not read a whole lot on these treads.
A quick question.
Is there any way to network unlock the xperia play manually, I mean without paying for an unlock code. I've searched google & xda a lot but can't find much on the topic. (This likely means that it can't be done, I know)
But I ask anyway cause I sim unlocked my sister's Galaxy Ace & that was sooo easy, I'm just surprised that it can't be done on the xperia play.
/noob.
All responses appreciated!
No there isn't, contact your network they may do it for free... Unlocking your bootloader also unlocks your sim.

Unlocking your bootloader does not unlock your sim, that's nonsense.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.
Much appreciated.
I heard that it doesn't unlock the sim, I read up on it before posting here cause I'd seen some people posting that it unlocked the sim as well.

No it does not unlock your sim, You obviously don't know what you're talking about.
unlocking bootloader doesnt mean unlocked sim butt yes my sim was unlocked when i unlocked my bootloader through through ominus, it came for free as an extra
Those who say it does, wanna cite a source? Rather than just saying "it does"
Sorry for the confusion, the paid method of unlocking your bootloader does unlock your sim lock - which is why i suggested it(wasn't telling you something irrelevant) , the free method via the sony website does not.
EDIT- http://unlock-bootloader.com/ This websites owned by one of the two people who do unlock bootloader and it says under bootloader unlock it's included with the sim unlock.

Ah I see, thanks.
How do these guys do it? Do they have some kind of hardware tools or inside track? It's just weird to me that we can't unlock the sim ourselves when you can do nearly everything else with phones these days!
They use a software called SEtool or omnius, they have to pay for credits(which are only sold in bundles and so would be wasteful and expensive for somebody unlocking just their bootloader) to use the software which is why they charge you the equivalent- they dont make anything or make little from offering the service.
if it's just sim unlock and you don't want to unlock bootloader and fastboot then you can try here if your phone is At&t :http://sim-unlock.net/sim-lock/99/Unlock_by_code_any_Sony_Ericsson_network_AT&T_USA/
The cost is around $6 USD

That's fair enough. But you paid to get your bootloader unlocked right?
I see how you can easily make the correlation.
But as Nabeel alluded to:

think so not sure
Hello,
I have a locked T-999 and I'm getting my hands on an unlock code. Can I buy any cheap microsim card to unlock my device or does it have to be AT&T?
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Phone-Cards...=R40&_clu=2&_nkw=at&t+microsim&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1
I would think it'd need to be a tmobile sim, but I'm really not sure about that.

Any non T-Mobile SIM card will /should being up the unlock menu.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Insert any non T-Mobile micro SIM. You have to have a SIM that's not T-Mobile. T-Mobile s3 doesn't have access to unlock menu until another SIM is in the phone. At least it wasn't possible when I unlocked mine months ago

Thanks for the responses!
So I can just get this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NET10-MICRO...130794368103?pt=SIM_Cards&hash=item1e73f3ac67) and it is guaranteed to bring up the unlock menu?

or just go in to ATT and ask them to use one for a sec. Im sure if you tell them you need to unlock the phone to their network they will have no problem letting you use one for 30 sec.
like the old apps that calculated the unlock code for you?
Yes but not the way u require

Why not tell your carrier that you are going overseas and want to use your phone and ask them to unlock it I did and T-Mobile sent me the code for my phone at no charge. My problem is coming up with a non-tmobile sim card.
thanks but i tried that a while back. no such options for me

Gonna get a N7100 soon, like in a couple of yours second hand. How do i tell if its carrier locked? What are the sure signs?
Just put a sim in it, if it asks for network lock code then its sim locked, there is a thread on here how to unlock it for free anyway. Ill dig it out for you
