No operating system, Help! - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed GPE on my M8 yesterday and decided I wanted to go back to Sense. Now I'm stuck without a OS and no backup.
I can get in TRWP recovery and Fastboot can recognize my device.
How do I enable USB debugging? would I need to manually install the drivers on PC?
Helpppppp

Boot to recovery.
Connect your phone to your pc.
Use adb to push a rom to your phone.
Adb push romfilename.zip /sdcard
Wait for it to finish, flash rom.

Thanks, I did this but when I try install in recovery I get the following
E:unable to mount ' /cache'
failed
?

AFAIK you can't go back to sense after gpe due to partition size limits. Unless thatb has been fixed recently, that may be the cause of not being able to flash the ROM

I had similar issue.
connect through adb
adb reboot bootloader
and then follow gpe ruu instructions again (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708589 )
At least that way you are working
If you are adamant about returning to Sense read through the entire GPE thread, Navalynt has posted a working fix., BUT reinstall GPE first
Personally I prefer GPE

You could also try flashing Viper. Any of the versions will flash the correct partitions for you to migrate to any other Sense rom after you install it. I would suggest using Viper as a stepping stone to the version of Sense you want. I would...1) Download Viper rom on my pc. 2) Using a sd card reader, transfer the rom to your external sd card then put it back in your phone. 3) Flash viper and allow the phone to settle for about 10 min. 4) Reboot into recovery and flash any other sense rom you're looking for.
Yes, this worked for me, that's the only reason I would suggest it. I go from Sense to GPE all the time, without a pc, and without that command-line stuff.

This will work if you are talking about GPE Rom, not the GPE RUU Full conversion. (Although as always I am prepared to be shocked )
Plus you have the USB debugging issue...
There are complete threads about issues coming back from the full conversion. The Op states in the original thread
"PSA After converting you will not be able to flash Sense based roms due to the different size of the system partitions between the sense version and the GPE."
Probably need more info
1) Did you flash graffixsync's RUU or a GPE rom?
2) Did you re-enable usb debugging in the new rom before flashing back?
3) What rom did you flash back?
4) What happened on rebooting?
.

Correct. But I think that he/she flashed a GPE rom, not the conversion. My response will solve that issue while sidestepping the usb debugging issue. If you remove the external sd and transfer the rom from the pc to the card then you don't need usb debugging enabled at all.
Root121 can you tell us if you flashed the GPE rom or the GPE full conversion? (I don't want to lead you down the wrong path)

Lol, which is why I edited to ask the question

I flashed the GPE Rom. also USB debugging was enabled when I was attempting to go back. I ended up formatting and rebooted with no OS installed on reboot it just stopped at the HTC splash screen.
I am trying to Sideload GPE rom on CWM recovery, getting this error...
E:Error in /data/media/0/gpe.zip
(Status 7)

Did you run MD5 check? If not check your zip. After that try to
Reboot in TWRP recovery and Select Advanced and Click "Fix Permissions". After that give it another try

Hey guys
I formatted the storage, installed TWRP recovery again and managed to sideload Viper
Thanks!

Glad it's working!
Dunno why everyone was talking about GPE conversion.. You never mentioned anything about having done a gpe conversion -_-
In any case, for future reference, USB debugging is merely a software setting for while in rom. It will not affect fastboot and Adb will work fine in twrp regardless. So if you have no rom installed, it doesn't matter if USB debugging was ever enabled or not.

[Q] Bricked my One X, really need help of a wiser people. Please

I've been following xda for a while now, but this is my first post so please take it easy on me, if I posted this in the wrong thread.
I am not new to rooting and costom roms. I have successfully rooted one phone before and I used it for a more than a year, didn't have any problems at all. Yesterday I got myself HTC One X and today I tried to root it and somehow got myself stucked/bricked.
The phone is stuck on HTC Quietly brilliant screen. I can get into bootloader, but thats it. What can I do? I already tried to flash back the original ROM, but couldn't get device to connect to PC. I looked all over the forum and googled it and still can't seem to find the solution. Any help would be highly apprechiated.

Something went wrong when I tried to root it. It probably didn't go through with it. I tried to flash a stock rom back, after I got stuck but it won't go, because I can't connect with PC.

Which recovery have you installed? If it's twrp you can mount SD from there put a custom ROM on it with superuser (root) flash that ROM from recovery and you have root. It's by far the easiest way to flash a custom ROM to get root instead of getting root on a stock ROM.
And BTW, the hox is not easy to brick of you ask me so don't panic (yet)

need to be more specific. did it happend just after you tried rooting? or did you try to install/flash rom/kernel/(recovery etc)
try to root again . use this tool. its the easiest. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439
i m no expert but from my experience your problem occurs when you flash incampatable kernel..also, we cannot s-off our one x so you have to flash the kernel (named as boot.img, if not , you rename it) manually via fastboot. (download sdk tools) when flashing new rom.

As you said, I used that tool. I installed HTC Drivers, registered at HTCDev, got TokenID, submitted it and unlocked Bootloader. Everything went ok, the only thing that was wrong was with the MTP device driver, which failed to install every time. (I think that was the reason why it disconnected with PC). I then procceded to Perm Root where it got stuck on the phone with red explanation point screen. From there I could still reset phone to a normal state like there was no changes.
Then I tried InsecureBootAndRoot, followed the steps and shortly after it started rooting, the program closed and it was stuck here. I tried to do it again, but I got the message: Waiting for a device.
Can you explain in more detail, how to flash kernel manually, if my computer doesn't recognize device?

No, I haven't. I am now practically without a rom (I think). I would prefer custom rom (like cyanogen).
The problem is that everytime I try to do anything for example, flash back factory RUU, I get the message: device not found. Is this because of problem with drivers. Someone please help me out

If you want cyanogen you need a custom recovery like TWRP. That recovery you can flash through fastboot but like you said there is something wrong with your drivers. Did you install HTC sync on your PC. And did you enable USB debugging in your current ROM?

Yes, I got CWM recovery. I just discovered that. I installed and uninstalled all the latest htc drivers and htc sync many times. It enabled debugging mode, the last time I was on stock rom (don't know if you can check that now in bootloader?) If my phone is not rooted, than I can't install custom rom right, because I think it isn't. how can I check that?

No you don't need root to flash a custom ROM. Flashing a custom ROM will give you root. So you are doing things the wrong way. If you can get into cwm then make sure you have cyanogen.zip and gapps.zip on your phone. Extract(copy) the boot.IMG file from cyanogen. Then from cwm do a nandroid backup, full wipe except SD card, flash cyanogen, flash gapps. Then from cwm boot into boot loader, make sure you place the extracted boot.IMG in your fastboot folder on PC and in command line give commands: fastboot flash boot boot.img then: fastboot erase cache then: fastboot reboot Then you can unplug USB and it will start cyanogen and you have root.

Okay, so I installed latest CM10 and gapps. How to extract boot.IMG form cyanogen?
I extracted boot.img from Cyanogenmod zip file (that is the same for everybody, right?). I did a Nandroid backup like you said But now all I can do is wipe data/factory reset (CWM Recovery v5.8.4.0). I can't find an option to wipe only selected things.

a rom is a modified software of android from a developer that you can install on your phone through a recovery, it's good that you can boot into recovery but, I'm not completely sure what's going on, the rom that is currently on your device could have a problem and not able to connect to mobile data. you could download a different rom and flash it onto your phone and see if that fixes it, there are plenty of amazing ones to choose from on this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one/development even though you have the mobile data problem on your current rom i would still make a backup of your current rom to go back to incase anything happens when (if) you flash a different one

there are many videos online but its pretty easy, find a rom and gapps (if its included with the rom) then download those two to your sd card( make sure they are in .zip format) once downloaded boot into twrp and choose the backup icon and swipe to backup. when that's done you will press the wipe icon and perform a factory reset(you lose all data so make sure you have contacts synced to google) when its done wiping your data go back and install zip and locate the downloaded rom and choose that then if you downloaded the gapps(google apps) choose add more zips near the bottom and find that .zip. when you have everything you will then swipe to flash. when its done tap reboot and it will load your new rom.

Sounds like you're new to the world of modding which is perfectly fine because we all had to start somewhere. You want to familiarize yourself with the basics before you get too far over your head though. Here's a basic terminology guide that will help you right now: http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/05/the-dummys-guide-to-android-rooting-everything-you-need-to-know/
I don't know what the person before you did, but as santod has explained NuSense has perfectly working data. I'm using it now and have never had issue. It's my personal favorite rom, but there are many out there right now you should be trying out for yourself and forming your own conclusions. Almost everyone will have a different opinion on the "best rom" which is why it's a question you'll see avoided around here. Personally, I would start on a "stock" rom like the one offered here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485319. That thread also includes very important instructions on how to update your firmware (for better radio performance among other things). Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions before doing something you're not sure of.
No operating system
accidently wiped everything clean the PC cannot recognize the device says I need a driver. I still have twrp but the backup was wiped on accident what do I do to fix it?
I think you'll have to push a rom from your computer to the phone using ADB and then flash it in recovery. I've never had to do that so hopefully someone can chime in with more details.
You need the adb debugging tools installed on your computer. Plus HTC drivers. Once you have those installed, you can try flashing a RUU. Here's 4.2.2 RUU http://www.htc1guru.com/2013/11/verizon-ruu-zip-1-10-605-10-posted/ . This tells you how to setup adb http://www.howtogeek.com/125769/how-to-install-and-use-abd-the-android-debug-bridge-utility/ . To flash the RUU, place the RUU in the same folder as your adb tools, and rename it RUU.zip. In the command prompt type, fastboot oem rebootRUU , then hit enter. Then type, fastboot flash zip RUU.zip ,then hit enter. Afterit finishes you'll have to type fastboot flash zip RUU.zip one more time . Then after about ten minutes it will finish and you'll type fastboot reboot-hboot. Then restart phone.

Well is for me lol
Root doesn't matter when you're S-OFF and have a custom recovery installed. Root comes into play when the OS is actually running and from the sound of it, your internal storage got wiped, hence why it can't mount system.
When you are in TWRP, plug your phone in to the computer and it should allow you to do adb commands.
Grab the ROM of your choice, I'd recommend InsertCoin but you can use any ROM, download that to your computer.
In TWRP, do Wipe/Advanced Wipe and check Dalvik, System, Cache, Data (do not check Internal Storage, microSD, or USB-OTG) then swipe to wipe, reboot recovery.
Now open up a command prompt with adb and do adb push romnamehere.zip /sdcard/romnamehere.zip
Then install the ROM as normal.
Reboot and if you get hung at the HTC screen again, you can try the same thing but wipe internal storage as well. Note that will wipe everything on your device but it may fix it. If it does not, you may have a failing eMMC chip, something I saw a few times on the M7, which would require a replacement device. I don't believe we have a RUU out yet which would kind of mean you're SOL. You would have to use the instructions to return to 100% stock in order to get warranty service or if you have insurance you would have to pay your deductible since you modified the device.
Before wiping internal storage post here again if the above instructions fail. There are other things you can try first.

Check the MD5 of the roms you are downloading. Also, which rom are you trying to flash and which phone do you have?
What recovery are you using?
Assuming the MD5 of the roms you are flashing do matchup and this isn't just a corrupted data issue. I would redownload whatever recovery you're using,
Check the MD5 of the recovery image
Flash said recovery:
fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img
then use fastboot to erase cache
fastboot erase cache
Then select recovery from the bootloader screen
Then factory reset
Then wipe system in advanced wipe
Then try flashing your rom again.
Iam have TWRP v2.7.0.2
The phone is Verizon m8.
Roms : Revolution HD and Viper
and what does it mean md5 matchup ?

When you download a ROM, typically the md5 checksum is posted on the download page. Using an md5 checking program, you can verify the integrity of the files you download by generating the md5 checksum of the file you downloaded and comparing it to the one posted on the site where you downloaded your file from.
Use google if you do not have an md5 checking program. Flashing something like a firmware or anything that alters any emmc partitions that has data corruption could brick your phone. Hence and MD5 checking tool is invaluable when rooting/modding your phone.

Hmmm on Verizon??? Hmmm Verizon does have it's own separate XDA forum.. maybe you should try roms from there?? not sure if they're different but if XDA differentiated, then probably..

Also make sure you're using this recovery:

[Q] First Time Bricking My Phone (Urgent!)

Hi there, I have been an avid Android user for years and also a keen XDA-developer! I have sold my HTC One M8 on eBay and today while I was trying to delete everything off it, I have completely soft bricked it. My TWRP is still installed however I cannot do anything with it. I have tried mounting a ROM onto an SD card then putting into the phone to flash, it fails. I have tried sideloading a ROM, it fails. This is the first time I have been unable to fix this phone, I've been at it for hours! Can someone please give me some help, it would be VERY appreciated!
How does it fail.

Thank you for getting back, when I am running the "adb usb" command, I receive "error: closed", I ran the adb sideload command after that to see where it would get me and it flashes to 100% and then warns me that no OS is installed. When I download a ROM to an SD card and attempt to install it I get the message "Error flashing zp '/external_sd/ROM2.zip"
Check the md5 of the ROM on the sdcard, ensure you have the correct TWRP installed, GSM, Sprint or Verizon.

I downloaded the ROM off the HTC website, a UK o2 4.4.2 version? That's what my phone was originally. I have the newest version of TWRP installed, version 2.7.1.0.
I didn't know the HTC website had ROM images, are you sure it's a ROM image?

It was a .zip file at 138MB named m8-3.4.0-g278eae8?
Sounds like kernel source.

I think you need to take a break or read a tutorial or something.

Thanks! Yes I'm following quite a lot ATM it's just the error messages that are holding me back, specifically http://htc-one.wonderhowto.com/how-to/fix-soft-bricked-htc-one-by-flashing-new-rom-via-adb-0154361/ .. Do you have any idea why the "error: closed" is happening?
Incorrect drivers, probably.
Try using a usb2 port.
Try unplugging your phone usb to pc, removing HTC software. Rebooting computer. Installing HTC software. Plugging phone into usb2.

Ok thanks! Last question, I found a stock international ROM for HTC One M8 - If I was to copy this to a SD Card then mount it to the HTC One, would it work?
I don't know what that means.
You can copy a nandroid backup to the right folder on the phone or sdcard and restore it with the correct recovery (twrp, philz, cwm, whatever the backup was made with).

I mean, I have downloaded a stock ROM for the HTC One, I'm just asking what would be the problem if I were to try and put that onto a SD card and then install the zip from the external SD card after I insert it into the HTC One.
In what form is this stock ROM? How do you intend to install it?

It's a 1.4GB zip file, I was hoping to use the "Install" feature of TWRP. I'm sorry if I'm coming across stupid I have been at this from 11AM this morning.
That should work, I guess.

It has flashed from what I can see however when I reboot the system it is directly booting into Bootloader mode, no matter what I press.
Dodgy ROM? Dodgy recovery? Did you check the md5 of both before flashing?

Internal SD Card Won't Mount

Phone won't boot

Yesterday I tried to root, unlock bootloader, and S-Off my device:
1.) Started with root. I downloaded weaksauce (I was on a firmware that still supported it)
Obtained temporary root while booted into OS
2.) Firewater to gain S-OFF and unlock bootloader
Worked like a charm
3.) Flashed TWRP Recovery
Worked like a charm
4.) Downloaded and flashed a new ROM (Andybones)
Horrible idea.
After backing up my nandroid backup, I did a system wipe like always and tried to load the new ROM... didn't work. I got nervous and tried to restore backup. Didn't work.
I tried to RUU the phone back to stock. Didn't work. Phone went wonky somehow along the process and now my partition tables are all screwed up. Phone will not boot, only load HTC splashscreen.
I have maintained fastboot from the bootloader, and my custom recoveries still boot, but they cannot mount the internal SD card at all. I get the errors "E: Can't mount /Internal Storage" or E: Can't mount /cache".
I've flashed multiple RUUs and none of them seem to fix my issue. Even though the system installs, the phone can't boot from that system and any recovery I have can't help me either since it can't read into the SD card at all, or even detect it. My Internal storage space is defined as 0MB.
I'm stuck with a brick as of right now and could really use some help. If anyone has a skype or anything please reach out to me. I am left phoneless for the time being. This should be fixable since I have s-off still; I just don't have the experience to do it.

I've used various different recoveries of TWRP including 2.7.1.2, and some others (not on my other computer at the moment). I also tried the most up to date CWM recovery. None of them are able to mount, repair, sideload, or fix any of the partitions.

I didn't ask you for the version of TWRP, I asked for the exact name of the TWRP image file you used. And where did you get it?
No idea
Basketballhero75 said:
A developer friend of mine was helping me out and he was doing all the downloading and flashing. I'm not too sure of the where but the file name is "TWRP_2.7.1.2.zip". and the CWM recovery was called "Recovery 6.0.4.8".
I'm 99.5% sure that it's not the recovery that's the issue here though.

The reason he is asking is because our model has different mount points than the other variants. Use the recovery in the below linked thread. It is flashable in ruu mode. He may have flashed an m7 recovery and not an m7wlv/m7vzw recovery.

Have your friend who helped you inform you if he used a specific Verizon ruu and recovery, as using an International, AT&T, Sprint, GPE, etc ruu will wreak havoc and cause headaches.
Use the ruu and follow dottdat's instructions in the above thread. If you can boot to bootloader, then all is not lost, just follow the instructions and commands to ruu with the Verizon specific ruu and recovery found in that thread and you should be set.
