Samsung Link - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Wanted to give the Link application a try but when I try to launch it and set it up I get a message stating that the account couldn't be fetched and if it persists to delete Samsung account from device and try again. Is this a common issue? Recently rooted with SafeRoot after doing the 4.2.2 update.
Got it working after uninstalling and re-installing the app. Didn't see it before.

I have had issues with link when rooting... though I think it is with Xposed installed, as I do both before restoring.
Uninstalling and reinstalling does correct the issue, though when I use link, it does not do a good job with thousands of music and pictures. I think it does best with less than 100 or so pictures. Music may just have to be trimmed down as well.
I think gallery at least does pictures well for more than 100 images. Though sharing will be your option.
With such a huge library as mine, removing my Micro SD card (my settings have media download to SD) and inserting it into a thumb reader via OTG does a quick and less troublesome way to transfer directly to a phone or pc.
You can also try Kies on the PC to do Kies over WIFI or USB.
Though with any wireless syncing or sharing, the speeds are limited to your connection, and WIFI is simplex not duplex when transferring, along with overhead, it makes for slow exchange of data.

USB Device Not Recognised - A NEW APPROACH

I'm hoping the wisdom and expertise I always find on this forum can help me.
I have a new AT&T branded HTC Touch Pro 2 (Tilt 2). After about a week, I began getting the dreaded "USB Device Not Recognized" error any time I plug it in. It never connects properly. I have customized the phone using some of the cool tools I found here, but I have never flashed any portion of the device - it's just the way I got it (WM6.5 CE OS 5.2.21849 Build 21849.5.0.63)
As suggested in various places on this forum, I have:
Soft Reset the phone numerous times
Rebooted the computer (WinXP) many times
Tried several different cables, including the HTC branded extUSB one
Tried different USB ports on my computer(s)
Tried other computers (WinXP)
Tried Windows 7 (WMDC) on another computer
Hard Reset the phone several times (with and without backup restore)
Uninstalled and re-installed ActiveSync 4.5 and the USB drivers
Adjusted various settings, including USB to PC, according to various posts
Cursed extensively in three languages
Regardless of any of this, every time I connect, I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" error within a few seconds.
I am now convinced the problem is hardware, probably the USB connector on the phone. I can't be without the phone until later this month, so I can't get the hardware fixed for a while. But I need to sync.
USB, of course isn't the only way to sync; the phone has Bluetooth. The problem is, I previously reset the device and un/re-installed ActiveSync, removing the pairing at both ends. To sync over Bluetooth, I have to first sync over USB, something I can't do.
MY QUESTION IS THIS:
Does anyone know a way to force ActiveSync to pair over Bluetooth WITHOUT first pairing over USB?
Any assistance anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated

if u go to settings>connections>usb to pc un check enable faster data sync
that might help
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that's one of the first things I tried and it makes no difference (I just tried it again - no joy). I should have listed it in my original post.
The only thing I can think of is to somehow force the phone to sync via Bluetooth WITHOUT having previously synced via USB.
Anyone know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it?
I think you should go and replace your hardware if it has warranty (since you have not flash it). tell them my phone USB connection is not working at all, and let them try it on their computers to make sure, am sure the warranty covers this kind of things
Uh, you're talking about the error on your PC right? This is a common issue. (with pc's) Use another USB port on the computer. That is what I have had to do. It worked fine for both the TP2 and my Wizard before that, but ever since I reloaded the computer I get that error on certain USB ports. have not researched it too heavily yet, but I plan to.
Did you try installing the Windows Mobile Device Center?

Did either of you read the post? It clearly states that he has done BOTH OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS!
Unfortunately, it does sound like this is an issue with bad hardware in the phone. I would suggest getting it replaced under warranty.

I'm having the same problem (vzw TP2). I've already messed with all usb-to-pc settings, tried different USB ports (I've had other USB devices that req'd that), reset my PC (thank you dogbert), reset my device and am currently reinstalling ActiveSync; though I doubt that's the problem because my BT syncs work fine (I don't recall being req'd to do a USB sync intially before doing a BT sync, so I can't really help the OP with that). My device does charge via the USB cable when plugged into the PC. Disk drive mode doesn't work any more than activesync. I also haven't been able to spot it on device manager. Uninstalling it there was one of my first ideas.
I'm wary of using a BT sync to install the official VZW 6.5 ROM, because I've read bad things about ROM interruptions.
I have yet to find by searching anyone who had a real USB sync problem (i.e., one that doesn't get "fixed" by resetting or something equally simple) who has actually posted that they found a solution.
@OP, when do you get a message that you are req'd to sync by USB first? Does activesync tell you or your device?
I have this problem at work where the machine is managed. It just refuses to recognize the device. It's a security issue that we haven't been able to track down yet. I think if you look in one of the logs (forget which) you will see the actual error as it tries to load the driver.
just for the hell of it, try an older version of activesync. just tryin to throw in all possible fixes. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3a-28bf-4cac-a682-58d3233efb4c&DisplayLang=en
try removing the sdcard and syncing?
RE: A New Approach
Thanks for all your responses. Sorry to take so long to respond to your questions and suggestions, I've been away (funerals and CES).
I have read extensively on this subject, have tried EVERYTHING everyone has suggested, and reached the conclusion that this IS a hardware problem, probably involving the USB jack itself.
At least for a while, replacing the hardware is something I can't do.
I want a BT sync for syncing with Outlook (Calendar/Contacts) and for installing software. I currently have NO plans to flash the ROM, I agree that would be risky over BT.
The error appears to be generated by Windows, I don't think it ever gets as far as ActiveSync, ActiveSync always indicates that it is not connected.
Despite that, I did try an earlier version of ActiveSync (can't remember which one); no joy. I tried Windows Mobile Device Center on a Windows 7 machine, but the results were the same: Device Not Recognized.
SO, does anyone know how I can force a BT sync WITHOUT first syncing by USB? That would solve my immediate problem.
Unfortunately I been there and done that.
The only workaround is to use a free exchange server - www.alol.net.br
I put it on my computer's outlook. Copied all the contacts and calender items from my default folders. Synced with ALOL. Installed on my phone, and synced via my wifi.
Not the best solution, but T-Mobile refuse to fix the faulty Diamond motherboard, but it works fine.
The first sync on the phone comes up with a error message, but after that it is fine. You need to manually put in all the settings.
I'm assuming that you have your phone set to "Activesync" + Enable Faster data synchronization on your Phone, under Settings->Connections->USB to PC
Have you tried changing this to "Disk Drive"? Activesync can still connect to the phone and do syncs, etc.
Atleast this is my experience on XP. I've had the same problem on/off after flashing one particular custom ROM.. Don't remember seeing this on my stock Tilt2 ROM.
Have you tried turning your computer Windows' firewall competely off? I read soom were that there seems to be some confict with windows firewall reconizing Activesyc.
None of the settings in the phone, including Disk Drive, make any difference. I'm fairly certain that I've tried them all. None of the settings on the PC side, including Firewall, make any difference either.
The connection never gets to ActiveSync; the USB drivers fail to recognize the device well before that.
As I mentioned earlier, I have become convinced that this is a hardware problem with the phone, probably related to the USB connector. All my research leads there.
The approach I'd like to try is to bypass USB connectivity completely and attempt to sync over Bluetooth. The problem is that ActiveSync refuses to sync over Bluetooth until AFTER the first USB sync (and setup).
Thus my question:
Does anyone know a way to force a sync over Bluetooth WITHOUT first syncing over USB. Registry hack? Settings change? ANYTHING?
Quick note.
This issue started happening to me as well.
And here's the somewhat odd part. With the SD card removed the phone is discovered properly. The original SD card and another spare one inserted in the phone cause the this USB error for me.
Go figure.
(and yes I've tried formatting the sd cards, and factory resetting the phone)
Since I use ubuntu, I'm not really going to spend anymore time figuring out this windows bug. Just needed to apply an update..via windows.
Try this it worked for me

Manila refuses to load automatically...?

Hi. I'm running a TouchFLO 3.0 ROM tp2 from Tmobile. Recently, without reasonable cause, manila stopped launching on soft reset. The ONLY way I can get it to load every time I soft reset is opening file explorer, going to the windows folder [which takes a good 3 minutes to load], and launching manila.exe. I haven't added or removed any programs in over 2 weeks, and it started today. Any one have any ideas besides backing up and hard resetting?
EDIT: Everything's running sluggish too.
EDIT x2: And after manually launching manilla, I'm missing my task manager button in the upper right.
sounds like as good of a reason as any to back up your contacts etc and do a hard reset. Especially if the phones being sluggish
It won't connect through ActiveSync. How do I back up all that stuff?
either use PIM backup or Microsoft MyPhone
Those would both involve me connecting to the device to install the cab. Maybe someone could tell me why all of a sudden I can't connect to the device as well? It's almost like my device has a functionality virus. -.- There's never been a huge problem connecting before, but now it absolutely refuses. I keep getting the "To connect to this device, you need to have ActiveSync 4.5 installed" message, when I blatantly am running 4.5.

Think outside the box...use the phones wireless connection to do it or use bluetooth to connect with activesynch. This is an internet phone after all.

How? I really have no idea.
EDIT: Nevermind. Emailing it to myself. Will it need to be connected to use PIMbackup or MyPhone?
use myphone... it can back up everything you need and stores it online... you can download the cab from the marketplace right on your phone. It uses your windows live account.
That said.. you can also transfer stuff on and off your sd card right to your computer no? By taking the card out and physically putting it in a memory card reader.
Myphone uses the data or wifi connection to back everything up. Pim doesn't just backs it all up to your sd card. Regardless I can only recommend what I myself use which is outlook or myphone and since outlook is a no go since you cant connect it via activsync for some reason I guess myphone is what I recommend.
good luck
Thanks for the help guys. All went well.

[Q] Nexus-Desktop folder sync

MTP might be better technically than USB Mass Storage, it is terrible for users. On OSX, for instance, you need to download and use the Android File Transfer utility, which might look like a Finder window, but it lacks crucial features.
The fact that you can't see your device's memory as a normal file system means that you can't sync directories, for instance. I have a collection of 15k photos which I like to keep in sync between my Mac and my phone. If I have to use Android File Transfer to retransfer all of them it's a disaster. Before my Nexus, when I used to be able to just see my device as a folder I would use rsync to copy only the files modified, which would take no time.
So the question is: is there any way to sync folders without copying files around by hand?
I use AirDroid to transfer files. It's a pretty awesome app, but as for syncing folders I use DropBox.
Nothing ground breaking in this post here so I probably didn't help you out all that much.
I'm trying to sync folders with Samba Filesharing via Wifi with SyncToy in PC.
Thanks for the Samba and Dropbox suggestions. I don't want to pay for Dropbox just to be able to sync files, but perhaps a Samba share would work. I'll try and report.
I did try Airsync and was impressed. Except it doesn't fulfill the syncing requirements, and it crashed my gnex the first time I tried transferring a file (had to remove the battery and all). It may not have been Airsync's fault. But it did coincide with the transfer just finishing.
I use rsync over ssh (rsync/ssh installed on the phone, sshd server on my computer, commands saved to a script in /sdcard and started with ConnectBot). Works beautifully, one single touch on the phone and all the files I want from the phone and from the computer get sent to their appropriate spot. It means I don't have to plug anything into my computer or do anything on my computer. I had to manually install the rsync/ssh binaries, as I'm running the stock ROM (rooted).
I should look into a way I can do a two way sync. i.e. I'd love to see a way where if a file is deleted on my phone after a sync, that it can be deleted on the desktop if the the file is still older than the last sync...

Do you need more than 2 GB's for the folders you're syncing? The answer is obviously yes, since you said you didn't want to pay for it, but you can have a free 2 GB account with Dropbox.
I've use SugarSync on occasion, but it's as simple, I guess you could say?, as Dropbox is so I only use SS for larger files that I need sync'd.
Dropbox is one of my go-to apps. It's so easy to throw a file into one of your Dropbox folders, long press the file on your phone, and share and/or be given a link so you may send it to someone else to download/use. I also use it as a back-up to my PC's, phone, and external hard drives, you know, just in case my HD decided to die or if I need to access particular (smaller) files from anywhere.
Hope you're able to find a solution for yourself. Good luck.
"FolderSync" does it all and works well for me. I have it auto sync my pics every day to my NAS. It supports most everything.

[Q] Is there a solution for USB drivers?

I found a whole lot of threads saying that USB drivers to the PC was a known issue, but found nothing about an actual fix. I swear I could connect this phone and it just read it like a F drive. Never had to mess with the MPT thing. My last HTC just showed up as a drive on my computer. I was having a lot of memory issues on my PC and had to change a bunch of stuff.
Now the Note will not recognize, then I install samsung's drivers and I can see folder names but they are all unknown format. I have installed and uninstalled drivers a least four or five times.
I really really need to back up data from my phone to my PC. I use the note for taking notes when away from home. Also need to get all my pics off the phone.
Can this issue be resolved?
(No, I will not use a third party to move apps around. Dropbox and Kies are out because I will NOT give the NSA (or anyone) more chances to track my data because I have never used cloud or shared services.)

File transfer mode NOT media device mode?

Sorry for a kinda double post, as ive posted this in the noob thread, but I think its being overlooked.
When connecting to a PC, how can I get a normal file transfer mode?? the media mode is just too limiting, one file at a time, transfer with no ETA, cannot browse picture folders with image viewers.. "this file cannot be played are you sure you want to copy it" blah blah blah...
I'm sure on my old HTC sensation as well as media mode you had file mode.. but I cannot find it and I don't have usb 3.1 on my laptop only 3.0 so hopefully that's not the answer..
please help.. mostly after getting at my SD card without removing it from the phone as I can never find the "proddy thing".. not fussed if I need to install a third party app or other... but currently on stock EU rom non-rooted.

When connecting to a PC it should pop up a question about how you want to use the connection. So select Filetransfer and trust it with "Yes". And that s it basically. You can also find this in the notification bar... eh about what to use USB for.
Also be sure to have suiting drivers. IIRC they should be installed with HTC Sync Manager. Maybe installing HTC Sync Manager would fix your issues already?

How old? I think this special mode you refer to was removed some Android releases ago already. Nowadays theres MTP. By all this speed of that USB ports nowadays intention seems to be initially that you do not have to unmount it in order to get all that stuffs you knew from past. I remember when my ONE-S got a update suddenly in past where exactly this step to MTP happened. Since the USB2 hardware in this old phone was a bit older and worse it became slower than before. Many ppl had been looking for a fix for this, since you could not enable it like it was before. IIRC one solution was to use a custom ROM. I can not recommend using a custom ROM personally.

No it is not. I m also having a 3.0. Still at least with marshmellow you would have to enable the fast file transfer with 3.1 explicitly in the case you really have such port on your Computer. And still theres some influences and things to consider to get optimum bandwidth.
But a 3.0 connection is usually not as crappy as you describe it now. So i would sugguest you:
- I assume a driver bad.
- Or Faulty cable.
- Maybe some setting in your file browser on the computer?
- Is the preview disabled maybe?
- Latest drivers for the phone? (HTC Sync Manager)
At very first i would try to get latest HTC Sync Manager for HTC10 from HTC website. Or if you are in linux, check your packages, udev rules and that MTP gets rolling.
Hope this helps a bit.
PS.: Try connect your Phone to another computer with maybe Windows 10 and latest HTC Sync Manager. Just to exclude that your computer or its software might cause this issue.
Thanks for the reply, my "old" htc was probably 6+years ago.. I think it was my first android phone, Recently I have been using LG G3 running cyanogenmod, so have always had a proper "file mode".. it was just like plugging in an external hard drive. I did not realise this was not a feature anymore in standard android.
The main problem I dislike is not being able to view pictures... If I open one picture from my phone or SDcard, then my picture browswer says viewing picture 1/1 even if the folder has 200 pictures in it, I cannot space/tab through the pictures, I have to close that one, then open the next.... I do find it frustrating only being able to copy one file at a time, and constantly having to tell it that I do want to copy the file despite not being able to play it, but those things I can live with.
I already have tried installing extra software and on windows 7, (I am running W10) but no luck
It just sounds like they want you to remove the SD card.. shame they make it so impossible to do.. I'll continue to hunt for a solution without custom rom.. and post any findings.

How is it. How do you think about an alternative way to transfer data like e.g. from playstore Air Droid using WLAN.
Did you try another data cable, by all ports and operating systems?
And just in case. Do both of your computers feature the same USB drivers and hub? Maybe a driver issue.
I noticed one thing recently. When i connect with MTP and copy lets say: "400 MB pictures" taken with my old phone, spread on 97 files to the SD card it does not take long. But what takes long like 20 seconds after copying is done is that it shows previews. I have to really wait until it is done transferring.
So could it be maybe the case your phone does not finish somehow?
And yes the Windows Photo thingie does not see it as folder to slide through.
Meaning: i can not deny your issues fully.
Honestly what i totally love is an Plasma Desktop for linux is an software which called KDE Connect. You get WLAN connection to your phone and can even control the mouse. Do simple file transfers. And what i totally love about it is, is that it almost seemingless integrates into the Desktop. On the other End i think WIN10 does not feature such service (stock). Air Droid is one of those tools in this way which you can expand the computer expirience with. The preview and copying over WLAN is blazing fast. Plus you do not have to connect the cable.
But it requires a client/server and permissions on both ends. And thats what i dislike about the Windows side. It is not so seemless. And it is in the way of one of those extra services, running.
Also the speed of the SD card does in fact matter. Is it maybe one of the older generations you inserted?
The new SD's from this year are much faster and bigger.
E.g. read about SD card speed classes SDXC class U1, U2 and U3
Even if you can push 1 GiB /s through a cable.... if the SD only takes 96 mib/s...... lol
Maybe interesting to have a look at what about capacity / price is happening in 6 years.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/10315/market-views-hdd-shipments-down-q1-2016/3
So lets say you was using a 6 years old SD.
Your phone is worth (lets say 600 $) but the SD is not worth any cent. In case the SD was so old.
This is how Android now is.
What you're looking for is USB Mass Storage mode. They removed that because it was a wide security hole where someone could just plug your phone into a computer and copy all your storage and mess things up at will. Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) is all Android has now. Your phone memory doesn't just have your photos and music on it; it also has your apps, logins, systems files, etc.
The "file cannot be played" prompt that bothers you can be disabled in Windows. Just do a Google search on that. As for transfer speed, I'll bet you that it's a bad cable and nothing more. MTP isn't slower than UMS.
Good luck.
Thanks also.
I didn't mean to imply it's slow transfer. By limiting I mean it's holding me back. I like to transferr a 20GB video, and while it's doing it, go to my pics and view+sort them etc. But now I cannot. One at a time. Zzzzz..
It sounds like I will either need to investigate lineage again. (I'm unsure at this stage what I loose if I do, camera apps, mirror cast etc). Or perhaps buy a hand full of "proddy things" so I can more easily remove the SD card. I can never find it when I need it.
Thanks for helping me get my head around this alien tech/systems. I feel I understand now what's happening and why.
