Before I start flashing ROMs I need to know which ROM is the most stable...Also since I am coming from the OG Evo 4G I want to make sure I know how to flash the ROMs on the S3...Do I need to use Odin in the PDA slot or can I flash like i did on the EVO with cleaning the rom and caches? I just want to make sure because obviously I don't want a good looking paper weight...Also I keep hearing about FreeGS3 and the insecure kernel are there any custom TouchWiz Kernels that are stable or should I start some development? I never developed on the Evo because everything I thought of was already made but its looking like we need some devs to step up on the SIII...If anyone would like to colaborate let me know but if FreeGS3 is the only true custom I will be creating and compiling a Stock Custom Kernel to allow some upgrades without switching ROMs the second we buy the phone...
I want to install blackhawks kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2439564) but I've never installed just a kernel before.
I found a thread saying to install using a recovery, but I just wanted to make sure I was doing it right.
- Do you just flash it like a ROM?
- Can I flash a new kernel over a compatible ROM, or do I need to flash the kernel then the ROM?
I have a 210R and I'm going to use SvelteNole (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722582)
ANY advice is appreciated!
First you flash a recovery, reboot to the new recovery, flash the new Rom,reboot to the new Rom,reboot again to the recovery and then flash the new Kernel. I have SvelteNole with blackhawks kernel !!!
You can flash the rom and kernel during the same session in recovery. Rom first, kernel second.

Thanks for the help, guys! Can't wait to try your ROM, gr8nole. =)
I just rooted my D851 on 5.0.1 and now I want to flash a ROM. Can I get help or a link on flashing a custom recovery and ROM. And what ROM is in your opinion the best?

Follow the stock recovery installation directions.
Once you've got TWRP installed, seek out Illusion. Best custom ROM I've had the pleasure of using...

Perfect, thank you! I have everything installed already. Is there anything I should download or is the ROM itself enough?

If you want google apps....you'll need a set of gapps....other than that, I believe the last build (Illusion is no longer being supported, Dev moved on to AOSIP for the Nexus line) comes with a launcher, but just in case I would flash one you like (you'll have the opportunity to try the ROMs launcher if I am correct...sorry...it's been a while) - NOTE: certain gapps packages come with GNL, so if you just flash that particular gapps pack, you should be G2G
Let me know if you have any other questions. Illusion is by far the fastest, most fluid, stable ROM available for the d851.
So I've been reading about kernel flashing on the op5t n im seeing tht to switch kernels u should dirty flash the stock rom b4 flashing the new kernel then reflash magisk to keep from any issues on oos. Does this apply if im flashing a new\switching kernels on a custom rom as well? Like i should still be dirty flashing the oos rom to switch kernels even if im on lineage? Or do i dirty flash lineage in tht case? If someone could please clarify the process id really appreciate it as everything i can find is all about oos based kernel switching not about if ur on a custom rom going from one kernel to another

You should dirty flash lineage and then flash the kernel because if you flash a kernel on another kernel it may cause issues

Ok cool so its just tht you need to revert any changes made to \boot... So basically i only need to reflash magisk after doing the dirty flash of the rom on oos based roms then correct?

oh i mean it is the same with every rom, you have to dirty flash and then flash the kernel (sorry for being unclear with that one)
Hey, I'm a flashaholic and I'm a bit annoyed at why stock has to be flashed all the time if you want to go to another ROM?
Any future workaround?
stock at miflash will do its job to clean all modified partitions specially in a/b section, custom roms and aosp based roms didnt do that
