Can I use ROM kitchen to change battery icon etc safely? I did it for Galaxy S and wondering if experience will be the same with G III.

Yes, I just did it, but there are a few tweaks/gotchas...
1. You can only do some limited things with the kitchen (I just did battery). The reason is that if you are messing with anything in the twresframework.apk - the ones on our phones are too big (over 3MB) and will be rejected by the kitchen for now. I was only able to update the regular resframework and systemui files.
2. The resulting UOT file will not work as is in CWM (gives the Status 0 error). So I followed their suggested workaround:
WORKAROUND for recovery error (Status 0):
1. Unzip your ROM and find
META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary file
2. Put this file in the UOT zip (overriding UOT's file)
For this, I actually borrowed the CWM script from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732262 and took its update-binary file and copied over into the UOT one.
After that it installed correctly, and I know have a new battery icon!
Please note that doing this changed my status under the download mode to CUSTOM, but it did not increase the Binary Counter. I suspect because when you start mucking with key system files like the framework, it's got to account for this.
Can you share your battery icon?

Sure. This is specifically for the ATT i747 (UCALEM) - and using on other variants is almost guaranteed to be trouble since were dealing with framework files

Can you tell me why framework-res was changed in your patch, because battery icons are in the systemui. Was wondering because I already have a changed framework with tethering and cell standby fix and was going to try only using the systemui. Thanks

To be honest, I'm just used to uploading both frameworks and the systemui whenever using the kitchen. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if just copying over the systemui would do it and the framework is untouched stock.
Whenever I used the kitchen on the past I also would use the latest framework of my phone to preserve any tweaks also made to it. You're more than welcome to try manually patching just the systemui and retain your custom framework.
Each phone I've had seems to move certain components to different files which again is why out of habit I use the frameworks but could just be a placebo.

Just FYI, I'm running DietICS ROM.
I had previously used ROM Toolbox to change to a custom battery icon.
Then I just now flashed your battery icon.
Now I've lost my toggle menu.
Tried a fix-permissions & clear davlick but it didn't help.
If the dev for that ROM made their own customizations to either the framework or systemui flashing this may break them because these are from the stock ROM. To get it back your may need to re flash either the of the original files from the ROM you are on.

Here is the install zip for CWM - automatic install
i927-CRT-mod.zip
Here is the framework-res.apk - manual install, use a root file manager to copy to /system/framework/
framework-res.zip
Warning: This is made for the ATT stock rom. It may work on the Rogers rom as well. It may not work on a custom rom, if possible you should find the framework-res.apk specific to your rom, ask the rom creator to make one, or make your own using the guide and resources listed above. To be safe, always make a backup using CWM before installing ANY mod. It only takes a few minutes and can save you hours in the long run.
Disclaimer: Use at your own risk I'm not responsible if you brick your phone, yadda yadda. I have only tested this on an ATT 2.3.6 stock rom with ardatdat kernel. So far it seems to work great and looks awesome. There is a weird effect that if the screen is off and I push the power in for just the perfect number of milliseconds, the screen starts to turn on and then turns itself off again. But I have difficulty trying to get this to happen on purpose so I doubt it will prove much of an issue. It's probably just a quirk of having the CRT animation enabled. Anyway, all of that said,
Enjoy!
UPDATE:
Here are the uninstall files for the ATT 2.3.6 stock rom. All warning and disclaimers above also apply to these so always make a CWM backup first.
Here is the uninstall zip for CWM (reinstalls stock file) - automatic uninstall

Ah well that kind of explains it. I was looking for a thread specific to CRT animation. I did suspect that some of the custom roms would already have it enabled but I wanted to give the stock run a good run for the money before trying any custom roms. Also, having the info in the middle of a custom rom thread doesn't make it very accessible. This thread was geared more towards people with stock roms who wanted an easy, confirmed way of enabling the animation.
Also, I have all signatures turned off in this forum because so many of them were large and intrusive that they were really hurting the readability (imo) of the site.

FYI, this particular mod was not taken from his rom. It was created from the framework-res.apk in my own stock ATT rom and altered using the guide and resources mentioned in the first thread. So while he gets credit for doing it first, none of his work was used in the creation of this mod. (Edit: That I know of. Apologies if I'm mistaken. I'm not trying to rip off anyone's work or belittle anyone's contributions.)

Flashed dman crt but i think my system was corrupted, stucked on bootloop. Done recovery now i´ll try dman.
Sorry about that, this is made specifically for the stock rom. If you have custom rom, you should get the framework-res.apk specific to that rom, as the rom creator may have made other changes as well. I'll edit the first post to make it more clear that this is for the stock rom.
Restored Osimood and flashed crt.zip... no luck.
All the install zip does is copy that one file to your system directory. I think it's absolutely impossible to hard brick from that. Don't you have a CWM backup you can restore?

I'm wondering if it's broken as a result of the extra apps mod, the dirty flash over the factory stock rom, or if that's just the way it came from T-Mobile.

Ok, thanks for checking this for us. I'm a bit confused though, the "revert" files you posted are for removing the multiwindowmod altogether right? No more "all apps" for multiwindow? I"m wondering if the OP can figure out what the problem is. I never tried a non-tmobile ROM, so I got no idea if the other roms had the same issue with the "all apps" mod.

Since there was not one posted i decided to post a Remove Location Icon flashable zip file for those who just decide to stay stock de-bloated.
The update script is by andybones, and i modified the apk.
This will work with stock, and deodex, roms as long as you have no other modifications are made in the systemUI.apk
I also included the stock file as well.
Flash in recovery and wipe the dalvik-cache, reboot, SUCCESS !
There are Three files. The Remove_Location.zip will work for both odex and deodex roms.
For odex roms it deletes the odex file and replaced it with a deodex version. It will work just fine don't stress out about it....
The other two are stock deodex and stock odex. If you want to go back make sure you use the right one!

I corrected this problem, and the code is now fixed !
Is it still a blank icon that just now AFTER the Beats icon, or is it really space freed up for other notifications?
I don't have that behavior myself on my device after flashing as seen in the posted screenshot. Anyone else ?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
Edit:
Note that even though the modification to the systemUI.apk smali code should set the icon to a with of zero, the actual location of those icons are in the same file
Those were technically removed on my first attempt, which yielded the blank space between the beats icon and 4G symbol or whatever else. That b/c I didn't take into account the smali code in systemUI.apk
Now on my device theI just applied the systemUI.apk modification which just set the width of the ' clear ' location icon to zero which made the space disappear. I have tested this several times by replacing the original systemUI.apk and systemUI.odex files and then re-flashing the modified one and it functions as shown in the OP screenshot.
I also compared the MD5 checksum with the one I flashed vs the one I downloaded from here in case i accidentally messed up and they are identical.

I was going to say, that those status bar mods are not stock
The SystemUI.apk holds some of the icons for the statusbar, and the systemUI.apk hold the codes that control the blank space between the 4G icon and the beats icon that is where the blank space was.
Those are the files that were modified by me, the first being accidental leaving the space between the beats icon and the 4G symbol, and the later resolved the space
Either way, I had the space previously with your first mod and flashed the updated zip and the space is gone. Thanks for the fix!

where's the link to those files?
does anyone have a link to those framework files for hotspot tethering with the mk2 baseband?
Framework Files
Hello Agelistus,
the files you can find them on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47983804&highlight=tether#post47983804
It will be Post #225
I didn't copy the direct URL as I don't own the link of files. Would be glad to post them here if TheArtiszan is ok with that or re-upload them to make them available in more than one spot.

Much obliged!!
Hey southsidexz, thanks a million!! xda is an entire universe of information and I would have truly burned the midnight oil looking for this to no avail. Gonna try it out now. So far that's my only issue with infamous 9, it seemed that wifi tethering worked natively on 8.0. Again, many many thanks!
Your welcome
Your welcome. Always glad to help people around.
On another note I was dumb enough to rename the framework to old before I replaced it so my Phone got killed..... However thanks to cabloomi and his Recovery Image to .tar.md5 odin flash, I was able to flash CWM latest recovery so it could read my MicroSD card and then flash the zip I created that flashed the framework file. (Thanks to ScatteredHell)
If in case someone else does it... and doesn't want to re-flash the rom or restore old backup.
You can flash Framework via recovery, following this thread instrucitons to get the framework apk into a flashable format for recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840098
If in case you have a recovery that won't read your external SD card (like I did) you can use this link to flash any recovery via ODIN.

(Side Note: if you get errors, please see post #23 on the link above, it provides the solution if you get errors)
Note:I am not responsible for damaging or further damaging your phone, I am just providing help/alternate solutions. Your phone is your responsibility
I follow the steps above and got back up running.

Just to make this easy I had the same problem on replacing framework, too. Then I searched on some other forums here and found out you can copy or move the framework apk into system folder and fix permissions then move that framework I to the framework folder to replace over the existing apk and just reboot. Just make sure to make a nandroid before doing anything just incase something goes wrong.
Thanks
Thanks Carlos2200,
I would've taken that route but sadly I couldn't get into the system folder. I wasn't able to do a nandroid restore as my SD card got messed up and the backup was gone.
Definitely for anyone, make sure you have a good Nandroid before anything.
I will update that the method I mention above does remove all your accounts only. So you will have to re-add them.

An alternative....
For those who don't care to bother with the framework files in the event that 3minit is updated to work with 4.3, I came across an app on the play store called "wi-fi tether router" that seems to work, though I haven't a clue why it does. Changing the user agent on the browser renders it successful it seems. Good luck to all!
