Well here I am. I'm brand new, so hello! I'm Tom.
I'm on Windows 8.2 trying to root my Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I've seen a LOT of posts exactly like this, and I've tried absolutely everything I've seen suggested, yet I always end up getting stuck on < waiting for device > in the command prompt while trying to root, with nothing changing on my phone screen.
Every single time! I've used every method I've seen(including superboot), and resorted to manually navigating through Android SDK, only to reach
"< waiting for device >"
I've been at it for three hours after deciding that one of you (or more) skilled folks could definitely help me on my way to rooting.
Now, I'm not afraid to say that I'm new to executing this process. I've read up on it plenty, but putting it into practice has been troublesome for me, and if you could offer explicit instruction, it would be best.
Thank you kindly!
(Yes, it is in fastboot mode at the time of attempted rooting/fastbooting)
(Yes, USB Debugging through developer options is on)
Sounds like a driver issue but your phone is detected.. Weird but I think you should check your drivers.

This may sound silly, but is it a driver issue on my phone, or on my computer?
And is there a guide on how I might go about fixing it?
(I took the time to re-install the USB Driver directly from Samsung website, if that's what you mean.
On your pc Just use device manager to see if there is any yellow exclamation mark by your device when its plugged in. If there is you need to update the driver manually. For that: all hail google lol

I updated the driver - directly from Google, as well. Alas, no luck. Do you have any other suggestions?

Use a different USB cable and try different ports.
I tried a different port, no luck there. It still attempts to start fastboot and stops at "< waiting for device >" - like before.
What does using a different USB cable change? I've yet to do it (but I will within two hours), and I don't see what difference it could make.
Thank you though. The help is very much appreciated.

A diffrent usb cable works because magic minions in your computer recognize the new usb cable and then go and install the right driver. No seriously I have no idea but it might work.

I have had a cord go bad before. Funny thing is that it would charge just fine. Trust me sometimes it can be the cord.
Also I have heard of the phones USB port having a couple of bent pins. This can result in the behavior you're experiencing. The phone will charge just fine but can't be recognised by the PC. If they are bent back into shape everything will be fine.
Wouldn't it prove that the USB Drivers were functioning properly from being able to sync files, use adb commands, etc?
I'm definitely going to try it - in about an hour - but I still question what makes it work.

So both of my USB Cables are fully functioning - and still waiting for device. Anything else you can recommend?

Have you looked at those pins inside the phone port yet?
You can notice if they are bent.

If all else fails try another PC.
I will try another PC.
In the meantime, I spoke to a friend, and we came to the conclusion that the version of Android SDK i'm using could be too new - the Galaxy Nexus was a product of 2011, after all.
Perhaps if I install an older version of SDK (however that's possible) I'll be able to root successfully? Just an idea.

I talked to a sales associate at my local mall, and he suggested I try http://www.cyanogenmod.org/ and it worked flawlessly. My phone is now unlocked, running CyanogenMod, and running Kitkat 4.4.
Thanks to everyone for the help! I hope all of your days are great.

Like kenny said get a better cable and redownload the files... oh and repartition shouldn't have been checked since you were already on BML and is used to go back to that. :/
Auto reboot is the ONLY thing that should be checked. Redownload the files and try it with a better cable if you don't have one stop now or get ready to bury the phone.

Because the front is a hub usb port and the usb's in the back are direct on the mobo. Certain computers are picky some like the front over the back ones.

I don't think it's a driver problem since my other et4g mounts just fine. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes!! Found something that worked! Thanks to PatrickBay over at Android Central and thanks to all that replied!
PatrickBay @ Android Central....
I had the same problem over the last few months and it progressively got worse. Yesterday, try as I may (and I tried all of the software-based fixes I could find), nothing would work. Even the charger would no longer juice it up.
That made me think that it could actually be a physical problem, not a software one. So I looked at the micro USB port and the slot in the middle (the tongue, if you will), seemed to be tilted too far down. I stuck a glasses flathead screwdriver (one of those really slim ones) in there and bent the connector upwards so that it was roughly in the center of the cavity. Plugged the cable back in and, lo and behold, all functionality fully restored!
I would caution that if you're doing this, do it as a last resort, and do it gently since you're forcing something that's fairly delicate.
I've noticed this problem on other Nexus phones and I chalk it up to the way that the micro USB slot is unsupported (so it can bend easily).

There was an attempt by some devs to get this working. For whatever reason it was found not practical for Ace devices. Now with its age, most are moving on or working on ics and jb kernels which they are still trying to get the bugs out of, let alone make it do something it isn't meant to do. I would say with a good amount of confidence that it will never happen.

Okay, I really searched for a solution before posting, so if I missed something, I apologize.
So I have a sprint gnex that just decided to stop charging today. So I obviously need to put it all back to stock! That'd be all well and good but as I just mentioned it won't recognize it's plugged into anything!
I've tried different cables, different batteries, none of it worked! Except for putting it into recovery. Twrp to be precise.
So how can I re lock a phone that isn't recognized!
I'm on a Mac and was using a stock rom
***update***
the plot thickens! So I have rolled it back to my most original backup thinking that would have fixed it.
I was right AND wrong!
It now charges off of my Mac, but it doesn't realize it is plugged into a computer at all (yes I have appropriate drivers). But I am talking about on the phone end too.
Really scrambling here
You can't. It's been gone over a couple times but the only way to re lock the device is to plug it into a pc.

No, the issue isn't me not having a program.
I can just use ADB over terminal.

Hi. I don't mean to highjack the op. I'm having a similar issue with my wife's SG3 from att. Its not rooted and I have reinstalled kies several times and also drivers as well. I have seen a couple reports online that mtp is not supported on this device. However I do not see that in any threads here about such a thing. If I plug the USB in the back it will sometimes recognize the device however it fails on drivers. Kies WiFi works fine. I'd like to get the 4.1 update on there for her though. Mine has done that a few times for me. Not sure what it is when you hold the power button for 10+ seconds (reset/reboot/etc), but found if I do that the phone reboots and the phone connects again to computer. regular old reset and or battery pull didn't work for me, only the long press power reboot.

I was having a similar issue and uninstalling and then reinstalling all the drivers, software, etc. didn't work for me. But this did;
http://blog.vacs.fr/index.php?post/...ot-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones
Resolution
1. Unplug the USB cable
2. On the cell phone, dial the following number: *#7284#
Once the last # is hit, the PhoneUtil application is launched. Choose USB -> Modem and then USB -> PDA mode.
The good mode should be PDA. Even if the mode is PDA, switch to Modem and then back to PDA.
3. Plug the USB cable.
