[Q] epic wont turn on? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i just got this new epic in the mail after paying 100 dollars for it....was already on el30.....so i tried adding the md5 file in order to root it but it got stuck and got semi bricked so i tried to odin it back to stock and did repartition auto reboots and reset time and after like 3 intents of it getting stuck on boot.bin now it wont turn on.....HELP!!! I just got it today and im really scared about breaking it again!

Keep trying to get into download mode by popping the battery in and out. Get a better cable and redownload the files.

ok so i got it into download mode and it keeps freezing at boot.bin....i can never get it past that..............

Common noob mistake, worth a shot advising in case you're having a brainfart, make sure you're odin'ing under PDA or it won't ever finish.

Like kenny said get a better cable and redownload the files... oh and repartition shouldn't have been checked since you were already on BML and is used to go back to that. :/
Auto reboot is the ONLY thing that should be checked. Redownload the files and try it with a better cable if you don't have one stop now or get ready to bury the phone.

Looks like the phone wont turn on either? It gives me like this dark blue screen....really dim...noticed it when i tried turning it on while the light was off

Keep trying you will get it.

so now i am trying it on a diffrent computer with a diffrent cable.....and i got everything...tried to plug it in but it sais that the device is unrecognized.....so i tried downloading the drivers but it keeps freezing at the loading bar? downloaded the drivers 2 seperate times with same result?

Odin hangs on me everytime I use the front usb ports on a desktop computer. For some odd reason it works only on the main usb ports in the back of my desktop.

Because the front is a hub usb port and the usb's in the back are direct on the mobo. Certain computers are picky some like the front over the back ones.

ok so i think the issue is that usb debugging is not enabled?.....the only problem is that the first two computers i use read the phone and so does odin....these two keep saying unrecognized device....i would toggle it on but like i said before the screen will not turn on....just gives me a dim black screen....

[Q] need some help

from the top.
was given a free Samsung Epic because the owner had no clue what was wrong with it and had already upgraded.
started fiddling with the phone and noticed the following:
-won't boot past black and white Samsung screen
-when phone is off and plugged in, it freezes (screen looks like it's charging, but it just shows and empty battery and the spinning circle thing doesn't move)
-occasionally (before attempting several flashes), the screen would get a red tint to it. (hasn't done this since flashing several times)
-as soon as a battery is put into the phone, it powers on without needing to press any buttons.
-stock battery shows water damage, but the original owner insists the phone was never in water. i trust it because it was my brother and his fiance.
since fiddling with the phone, this has been my experience:
-flashes with Odin show as completed, but don't boot past black and white Samsung screen regardless of what was flashed.
-flashes with SWUpdater show completed, but don't boot past black and white screen.
-ordered one of those "jig"s from ebay, works beautifully, saves me the headache of trying to hit power/1 right as i put the battery in.
-phone off/charge screen still freezes
almost ready to give up, but i was hoping you folks might have some suggestions... luckily my Evo and my Moment before that never had any issues like this...
Have you tried a new cable? Redownloading the tar file? Try the tar and suggestions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
i have already tried several different USB cables as i remember that suggestion from my Evo and Moment before this, but good looking out. already tried 3 different cables with the same result...
downloading the stuff from that thread now
thanks for your help and if you have any other suggestions please don't hesitate...

Ok, in the thread I sent you to, it says pull the battery and sd card, then in Odin check all 3 boxes, repartition, reboot and f.reset. make sure to check the PIT box and include the PIT out of the Odin package and tar in the PDA section. Last resort time.

No problem. You will get it going. As long as there is life it can be fixed. Try another tar, maybe an EB13 tar and if that is successful let it update to EC05.

last resort would be to put this on my spare line and then claim insurance, but i was hoping to fix this by myself...
just to eliminate all options, make sure u try another usb cord, and also make sure u do odin right. a lot of those .tars dont actually need a pit, and also make sure that f. reset is the only box checked other than the phone one where u put the tar.

the other thread about fixing semi-brick said to have all three checked... and to use the pit.
god, this is way more complicated than my Evo or my Moment...
i know this may sound ridiculous (i thought it was) but have you tried a different cable? this happened to me once and switching cables fixed it. go figure.

Rookie mistake... any help?

So I was rooting my friends phone, and accidently forgot to remove the check mark next to repartition when installing cwm, now the phone will not install any roms, and will not return to stock through Odin. Gets stuck at factoryfs.rfs, and will not process any further. Any advice?
Get the victory.pit and odin again with rfepartition checked... I spent 3 days TRYING to brick this phone and couldn't... just keep trying... different cables, ports, etc....
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I tried that... have been using the PIT the whole time.. even repartitioned by itself which went through fine. Still hangs at factory, when I power on the phone it is a blank screen... tried two computers, and every port... set odin as admin, and running it in compatibility mode...
It sounds insane but really just keep trying because eventually it should work. It took me a whole day once but eventually I rebooted a lot and got the cord port combo, and the grace of a religious deity correct. As long as nothing blows up while doing the repartition nothing really bad should happen since you can always flash recoveries and kernels through Odin anyway. Good luck and happy flashing!

Unable to Mount ET4G to my comp as a disk drive

I have two rooted Epic Touch 4G's running calk's GB 3.0 Rom. I can mount one, but can't mount the other. The problem just started happening a couple of weeks ago. I tried reinstalling the drivers on my computer and have tried flashing a new ROMs, but my phone still won't mount. It charges just fine.
I don't think it's a driver problem since my other et4g mounts just fine. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks in advance for your help!
Try multi sd from the Market, should help mounting your phone for now. Have you tried different cords, USB ports, computers?

Yes!! Found something that worked! Thanks to PatrickBay over at Android Central and thanks to all that replied!
PatrickBay @ Android Central....
I had the same problem over the last few months and it progressively got worse. Yesterday, try as I may (and I tried all of the software-based fixes I could find), nothing would work. Even the charger would no longer juice it up.
That made me think that it could actually be a physical problem, not a software one. So I looked at the micro USB port and the slot in the middle (the tongue, if you will), seemed to be tilted too far down. I stuck a glasses flathead screwdriver (one of those really slim ones) in there and bent the connector upwards so that it was roughly in the center of the cavity. Plugged the cable back in and, lo and behold, all functionality fully restored!
I would caution that if you're doing this, do it as a last resort, and do it gently since you're forcing something that's fairly delicate.
I've noticed this problem on other Nexus phones and I chalk it up to the way that the micro USB slot is unsupported (so it can bend easily).

[Q] Help Briked + Cant flash trough Odin or Heimdall

I need help, really.
So here I am, buying an Epic 4G with bad esn from Ebay, i don't care about the Bad esn, I live in Mexico, so not a single **** given, I flashed it to Iusacell, the CDMA carrier here in Mexico.
It was working very well, it had voice and data and it was OK, i had no problems with the OS.
Then, the damn day that a dude was going to buy it from me, THE !"#!" DAMN PHONE DOESN'T TURN ON!!!!
It was stucked in the "Samsung" screen, and sometimes it came trough that just to freeze on the Galaxy S screen, just once it barely turned on and showed the Unlock screen, but when i unlocked it, it rebooted ¬¬
I'm a bad-lucked-noob dudes.
As soon as I started reading I tried to flash a stock rom with Odin, but it didnt work.
Now I'm realizing that the problem is flashing the "modem.bin" image, i tried with both Odin and Heimdall and nothing worked, several sotck roms, several modems, nothing worked, IT ALLWAYS STOPS AFTER DOWNLOADING THE MODEM AT 100% AND FAILS TO UPLOAD.
Heres what Heimdall says:
ERROR: Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence!
MODEM upload failed!
And its the same every damn time :/
Please help me, I'm so about to throw it to the floor
Thank you!
What cable? Could be a crap cable and data transfer issues. Also could be the phone is corrupt... I remember reading about somebody having to return their phone cuz it kept getting stuck on the modem.bin and it was a faulty phone.

I'm not really shure about the tar that I'm using, as I told I'm not very familiar with the Samsung devices, but I think its like a E30 and ive seen also a F09 or something like that, I downloaded everything related that I saw.
Ok, my question is: I know the cable could cause some problems, But, Is it possible that it ALLWAYS crashes in the same exact operation?
Yes it is possible. You could also have a damaged modem area in your ROM. Try to look for the EC05 tar and try that.

Try with version 1.3.1 of Heimdall rather than 1.3.2.
If the problem persists it might be worth repartitioning (if you're not already).

Use Odin
Place the phone into download mode.
Plug it in and ensure there is a yellow box with COM# (doesn't matter what number)
Put the victoryxxxx.pit in the PIT section of Odin
Place the EC05 or which ever TAR in the PDA slot of Odin
Make sure only auto-reboot is checked and hit start.
Should take around 3 minutes or so. Factory.fs takes the longest usually so expect it to slowly load on that part.
If you would like.. i can remote control your computer with Teamviewer and ensure you get things done correctly .
If you do install teamviewer Private message me the ID and Password.

I have seen a couple reports online that mtp is not supported on this device. However I do not see that in any threads here about such a thing. If I plug the USB in the back it will sometimes recognize the device however it fails on drivers. Kies WiFi works fine. I'd like to get the 4.1 update on there for her though. Sorry for the intrusion. Thanks in advance for any help.

Need some help guys. I've tried everything from re-installing drivers, different pc. Just 2 days ago my phone connected just fine to my pc. Won't even recognize the phone in download mode. Any ideas?

Mine has done that a few times for me. Not sure what it is when you hold the power button for 10+ seconds (reset/reboot/etc), but found if I do that the phone reboots and the phone connects again to computer. regular old reset and or battery pull didn't work for me, only the long press power reboot.

I really want to root it Odin makes it so easy. Boot loader, adb, Hboot versions on HTC are a little tricky but I like the challenge. I don't think she will let me. She complains enough about my crack flashing habits. And agreed when she gave up her iPhone I would leave her galaxy alone. She doesn't even care about the 4.1 update, can you believe that!

Id suggest not doing it then....whats the point?

Uninstall Kies
Uninstall Drivers
Reboot
Hook up the phone and let Windows Update get whatever drivers it can. It won't get them all
Unhook phone
Install the I747 drivers
Do NOT install Kies
Hook da fone back up
I've tried several... 3 cables here in front of me and no dice. I guess I should point out besides the 4.1 update. Transferring movies and music would be a bit quicker via mtp. It sounds like this driver issue is abnormal. Perhaps I'll just see if we can get it exchanged. If you guys have any other idea? Would be great to hear them. I may just sneak it and root while she is asleep put a clean ROM on it.
Oh and thanks you guy, for your input.

You could click through 334 pages and click 49 different buttons on the att website and get them, so just get these... they're current and from the att site...

When she is not around use Odin and flash mrRobinson's root injected stock JB. She won't even know. Lol

She said I could root tomorrow. I'll read up tonight. Any tips or trick you guys could pass along? What's the best exploit out there right now? Is twrp or cwm support recovery for this phone? I haven't used koush's clockworkmod for a while.
Thanks for all the help guys!

Thanks Quasimodem! That worked great. She changed her mind about letting me root. But I got keis to work with your method to update to 4.1 many thanks. I'm thinking of a possible switch to sgs3 cause you guys have CM10.1

I was having a similar issue and uninstalling and then reinstalling all the drivers, software, etc. didn't work for me. But this did;
http://blog.vacs.fr/index.php?post/...ot-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones
Resolution
1. Unplug the USB cable
2. On the cell phone, dial the following number: *#7284#
Once the last # is hit, the PhoneUtil application is launched. Choose USB -> Modem and then USB -> PDA mode.
The good mode should be PDA. Even if the mode is PDA, switch to Modem and then back to PDA.
3. Plug the USB cable.
