[SS/DS]Upgrade/Restore/UnlockBL/Root(Tested on Dual) - Sony Xperia M

Hello guys, I just want to share the steps on how my Xperia M[dual] is rooted and has its bootloader unlocked for about 2weeks dating to this post. I updated my XM to 4.3 and missed the benefits of a rooted android so I found a way to root it(During that time rooting on locked BL was still impossible). But upon searching methods and asking people on how to. I discovered a way on how to root my phone and unlock my bootloader and learned something that will make you feel confident on tinkering with your device.
So basically, Im not pertaining on rooting on this thread but upon reading the steps you might learn something that I also learned
This is for those Xperia M users who upgraded to 4.3 who wants to:
Downgrade to 4.1/4.2 and UnlockBootloader
Root their XM[Unlocked Bootloader][Dual]
Create Firmwares from their own country.
Also to create backups
First. let's assume you are in 4.3(locked bootloader)and doesnt know anything about FTF's and backups and willing to do anything just to install apps that requires root permissions. Just like me
Here are the steps.
1.Make your own 4.3 FTF file from SUS. The FTF from here is for your own country
Here's the guide on how to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-u/general/guide-how-make-ftf-stock-firmware-sus-t2075736
2.Flash a FTF file with lower android version. You can search the appropriate FTF file for your device in Xperia M android development.
Here's the guide on how to:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2697277Step 3 will be focusing on unlocking your bootloader. You can read it (if you want to root) or just skip it (if you're only concerned on backups) and proceed to other steps
3.Root your phone while running in 4.2.2 android version and unlock your bootloader.
Search the forum on how to root 4.2.2/4.1 you need to be rooted to unlock your bootloader. Here's the guide for unlocking BL:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484622Note: Don't install any kernel for now just stick to stock kernel to avoid issues because we will be upgrading back to 4.3. If you read step 1 you definitely have your own FTF backup :highfive:
4.Flash the FTF file from step 1 and now youre back to 4.3 with UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, TA-BACKUP, 4.2.2 &4.3 FIRMWARE :highfive:
5.Optional StepThis method is strictly for XM Dual users only, because the kernel in the link provided here is the stock kernel xm dual 4.3 with CWM integration. For XM single users just search you own stock kernel with CWM if you want CWM
Follow the last 2 steps provided here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51559161&postcount=30
By now you have the knowledge on how to fix your own device. Example: If you got bootloop by flashing tweaks or kernels you can just flash your own FTF file to have a fresh start again. :victory:
Proof that I did this also. This is a private conversation of me and ansebovi

3. Root while in 4.2.2
4. Back up TA partition
5. Unlock Bootloader
6. Flash the ftf file from step 1

Rooting stock 6.1.A.2.55 with locked bootloader

I found out new method of rooting 6.1.A.55. For me this method was easier than rooting .50 with bin4ry method and instaling prerooted .55 with cwm.
As always: MAKE BACKUP of Your data
I`m not responsible for bricking Your XPX
Thanx to: Bin4ry for his rooting method
You will need:
newest flashtool
LT26i_6.1.A.2.50_1257-5499_WORLD.ftf from jvsykes
LT26i 6.1.A.2.55 SG Generic (1257-6921).ftf from xdafileserver.nl
attached zip
BASICS about phones by DooMLoRD There also are links to guides to flashtool
Method:
1. Flash (with flashtool) LT26i 6.1.A.2.55 SG Generic (1257-6921) (no need to wipe data)
2. Let it boot, turn on data debugging.
3. Flash LT26i_6.1.A.2.50_1257-5499_WORLD EXCLUDING system.sin. (how to use flashtool:
4. launch Root_XpS.bat (from my zip)
5. turn on your phone and connect it to PC
6. After second reboot completes check for supersu in app list. if is missing - redo from step 4.
7. Flash (with flashtool) LT26i 6.1.A.2.55 SG Generic (1257-6921).ftf EXCLUDING system.sin. (no need to wipe data)
8. enjoy
Thanks , and i hope that will be helpfull for the guys have Locked Bootloader.
can you provide all the tools and flash file links
Sorta tempted to do this, but tbh .55 doesnt really seem to provide anything much new so I think I'll wait.
can i use .50 italian firmware right? anyone please can explain step by step? like turn off the phone...connect cable...etc
I`ve added links to my 1st post. I don`t think, that pasting whole guide from DooMLoRD`s post is necessary
Didn't work for me. It says it can't write files. Read only...
I will give it a try

how to put a custom rom om my xpria s ?

please help me
Dude,
First we need a bit more info, have you rooted your phone?
Sent from my Xperia S, made awesome by XDA.
First you need to know if you have locked or unlockable bootloader.
Since you are new to this, my advice is to remain locked, that way you can't kill your phone.
Step 1 - root your phone
Step 2 - install cwm on your phone
Step 3 - choose the Rom you like, My favorites are trinnity rom if you like android stock interface or MIUI if you like more graphic interface. Download the Rom
Step 4 - follow instructions and flash Rom via cwm
If everything ok, you got a new Rom on your phone
ALWAYS DO THIS WITH AT LEAST 80% BATTERY!

Here you have some links with general info about XperiaS, but I believe you may need to do some more basic readings before..

I suggest YouTube. There are plenty of videos. That's the easiest way for newbies.
You have to flash CWM recovery or TWR on your phone or try FlashTool.
I have done by unlocking bootloader guide from http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and then going to fastboot mode and flashing CWM recovery and flashing ROM from there. Hope that helps!

[Q] Can C6506 - 10.4.B.0.569 Be Unlocked And Rooted

I have an Xperia ZL C6506 - 10.4.B.0.569
I went into the service menu and it says my bootloader can't be unlocked
Is there anyway to work around this and unlock it anyway? If not can I still root my phone?
If so please advise as to how. I looked on the forums but most posts relate to unlocked bootloader or
a different model or build.
If you need more info please let me know.
Thanks

You can root it and install recovery. Unfortunately you cannot unlock the bootloader.
This means that you can only flash stock based Roms, not any AOSP Roms like cyanogenmod, aokp, omni, p.a.c, etc... More specifically, you can only flash stock kernels. The ROM is Dependant on the kernel you are using. Stock kernel for stock Roms. Aosp kernel for aosp based Roms.
With Sony's devices (as of late anyway), the kernel is baked into the boot.IMG. And you can only alter, change, or flash a custom boot.IMG if your bootloader is unlocked. Sucks, but that's how it is.

Thanks for the info.
At least I can still root the phone which at this point was my primary interest.
As I mentioned I have not seen any rooting info for my particular build or model together. Am I missing something?
Did I not see it or has no one done it yet for this build/model setup.
Where would you suggest I go from here?

You need to downgrade to .423 stock kernel. Use Androxyde's Flashtool to flash that kernel.
Then use Doomlord's Rooting Toolkit to root your phone.
After that, flash the .569 kernel with Flashtool.
Now you can install NUT's dualrecovery.
Here are the steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388946
At point 11. you flash the .569 kernel..
I have successfully rooted my phone.
However I can't figure out how to get it back to .569
Do I need to use the Flash and Stripped version(This seems to be linked to rooting)
Or can I just use this
[FTF] Xperia ZL (C6506) 4.3 - 10.4.B.0.569 - Generic US
Found at this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2637847
Edit:
On a side note will I be able to update to 4.4 Kitkat when it is released for my phone by the normal download
or will I have to flash it to keep the root?
Edit:
So I tried flashing the Full FTF but ended up losing root. I tried to do the other option of using the flash/stripped version but it says I need TWRP and there
is no version for the ZL only the Z. Will the Z one work or am I going about this the wrong way.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey,
There is recovery for the ZL, you can get it from Nut's site here http://nut.xperia-files.com/
Looks like his latest recovery is called "ZL-lockeddualrecovery2.7.95-BETA.installer.zip (9.35MB)" at the moment.
If you flash my build 569 and lost root then you used the untouched FTF from Sony and makes your phone completely stock.
What you wanna do is flash back to an old 4.1.2 that will let you obtain root with DoomLord's 1 click method.
Once root is on your phone, install Nut's DualRecovery from the link I just gave you.
Download my 2 files (stripped FTF and flashable zip) and copy the flashable zip on your SDCard.
Now reboot into recovery and flash the flashable zip, once it flashes successfully, power off your phone. DO NOT Reboot.
Use Flashtool and flash the stripped FTF and boot your phone.
You will be on rooted build 569 with root and dualrecovery already installed. :good:
-------
It was also suggested to me for my Xperia tablet that if you already had root and simply wanted to update, all you have to do is:
1) copy zip to SDcard
2) go into recovery and install zip (without wiping anything)
3) turn off phone
4) flash kernel via flashtool
But I haven't tested this way
Thanks Crash338 that worked
I now have a rooted phone with .569

[Q] Root firmware .101

Hi guys... i need root mi ZL whit firmware 10.4.1.B.0.101 but not as... i need help
Sorry for my bad bad english :crying:
You have two options
1. unlock your bootloader and flash root(warranty, DRM keys lost)
2. downgrade to 4.2.2 firmware
backup TA partition then flash a 4.3 pre-rooted stock rom
lastly restore TA partition(must be stock kernel)
stock rooted phone with warranty and DRM keys
If you don't care about the warranty, I'll suggest just go with option 1, since option 2 might be time consuming.
Option 2 is always better. Who knows when your phone is going to break.

Not the OP, but am trying to figure out how to do this. All the root threads are a year old, so I want to make sure I have my facts straight before messing anything up. I have a C6506, US Generic but I don't want to lose my DRM keys or Warranty for resale reasons, so am trying to do this the "locked bootloader" way.
1) Downgrade to 4.2.2 firmware. Do I do this with Flashtool? This doesn't require unlocking the bootloader?
2) Root it .. Doomlord method? The Flashtool website says it can "root", too, but it offers no details on which method. What's the best way to go?
3) Install custom recovery. Which one? I see Nut's thread all talk about a dual recovery, but is that necessary? Can I install just one?
4) Is there a pre-rooted 101 for the C6506 US Generic? I can't seem to find one...

If you're on .67 or .101 firmware, just flash the .423 kernel via Flashtool.
Because it is a Sony stock kernel, you do not need to unlock the bootloader for this step.
When flashing is done, close Flashtool and reboot your phone.
Enable 'unknown sources' (found in security settings) and 'usb debugging' (found in developer options).
Now use Doomlord's method to root.
When rooting is done, it's time to install a recovery to your device.
If your're going to use a custom rom based on Sonys stock fw (like ExistenZ and RomAur), I strongly recommend using [NUT]'s dualrecovery.
AOSP roms (CyanogenMod, P.A.C., Omni, etc.) bring their own cwm recovery.
After root and recovery, turn off the phone and flash either .67 or .101 kernel, corresponding to your firmware.
Now it's time to backup the TA partition.

This is extremely helpful - thank you for providing links. I am wondering why this is so different from the method laid out here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51612704&postcount=12&nocache=1
Seems like your version is much easier, so I wonder why someone would go through all that trouble for the same result...
Also, won't I lose root once I flash the .101 kernel? Do I get it back using recovery?
Also also: the kernels linked above are for C6503 and C6502. Can I use the full FTF files for C6506 and just deselect flashing everything expect Kernel? It looks to be the same files, except that rpm.sin is included in the full files and not in the kernel FTFs.
when i flash a .423 kernel i got bootloops, am i doing something wrong?
after flashing back the .101 it boots normal

[Q] [Noob]FlashTool error, All Drivers are Installed

I have an Xperia M C1905 currently at 4.3 15.4.A.1.9.
I now want to root it again, and to do so I need to downgrade it back to 4.1.2. However, the flash process always fails with the following error message "ERROR - Processing of loader.sin finished with errors.".
I looked for a sollution and found one, it said to install all drivers from flashtool/drivers/flashtool_drivers.exe which I have done, but I'm still getting the same error.
Unlocking the BootLoader is not an option, as my carrier is not allowing it.
How do you attach your phone to the computer? You must first press flash and then attach the phone only when you are asked to.
You don't have to.downgrade anymore as towelroot can root 4.3 locked bootloader. Look in the general section for step by step guide on doing it, I have rooted mine via that guide
Sent from my C1905 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I forgot to reply to this post.
The problem was because I didnt uncheck the file verification in FlashTool. I know about the new half-root method to use with rootfix on 4.3, I would have used it as a backup method is the other root method failed.
To people that may be finding this topic while searching on google, what I did was flashing 4.1.2, rooting it (Framaroot - SuperSU and Gandalf exploit), then flashing 4.3 excluding the system.sin .
There are Tutorials about it in the General section.
Other useful stuff to do after getting a rooted 4.3 is to swap the memory. I've been using a script that worked well, now I did it by placing a file into init.d. Again, all of this can be found on xda (google it, it will most likely spit out xda results).
I finished my work, so this topic can be locked, or left open for people to ask questions regarding the steps I did. Everything is working fine for me.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that Reboot Fix is no longer necessary on 15.4.A.1.9 (even though it didn't work on 4.1.2). So far, during the re-installation of all my apps (was not required during the root process, I decided to do everything from scratch to remove all apps I haven't been using) my phone didn't reboot once, normally it would reboot roughly every 10th to 20th click. So I figure Sony has fixed the problem.
