Where is group messaging??? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

This feels like such a noob question but I'm at a loss. I know group messaging has been baked into the latest release but it doesn't seem to be working right.
I have the group messaging option turned on in my settings and I can send a group text just fine. But when I receive a group message it looks like a normal text message. I can't see who the other recipients are and so I can't respond to anyone but the person who sent that text.
I've noticed the same thing on several different S3 phones running 4.3 so I feel like either I am doing something wrong or "group messaging" doesn't work the way I expect it to. Are we only able to send group texts but not receive them? What gives?
Thanks.

I have the Verizon version of the S3, so I'm not sure if they behave the same. I went into my messing app, hit the menu to get settings and have the option for "Group Conversations" "Send messages as group conversations by default" checked...mine works just fine. When I get a group text, I have an option to switch it from MMS to SMS and have it be an individual text.

SMS and MMS

Well basically I am getting charged for some of my text messages and I do not know why.
If I send a long text message will it send as a MMS???
THanks ... this is with T-Mobile
You need to speak to tmobile.
The manual says that an SMS will automatically be converted to an MMS if "very long", but not how long. Can you visually tell when this happens?

Just like when you add a word tot he dictionary it will appear eith "Converting to MMS ..." once it is too long.
if memory serves, it's somewhere between 3 and 5 SMS messages in length where it changes to an MMS.
I always though 5 was the max for text messages on any phone. Then it breaks it down into seperate messages.

That is twice now! But at least I know before i rack up a huge bill!
I will experiment and find out!

Happened to me last week, NOT COOL!
is there a way around this ?
like a config option or something like that ?
is this specific to the desire or android ?
This is standard behaviour for all Android devices, and it applies to the stock messaging app. The reason for this, is that if you are going to send more than three SMSes, it will in most cases be cheaper to send an MMS. This does not of course apply when you have unlimited texts or other discounts.
Until this gets fixed, download a replacement from the market. Try chompSMS or Handcent SMS. The automatic conversion is optional in these.
ah ok
hope this gets fixed fast
using an alternative sms program such as handcent sms or chomp sms gives you the option to break up long text messages into seperate texts instead of converting to mms

[Q] Messaging app doesn't display more than 500 messages in the single conversation

I received from one person more than 500 text messages but only the number "500" is shown. I'm still getting more messages. But the number doesn't grow.
Messages are there. Just the total number of messages is not shown.
Is that a limitation of Messaging App?
in your messaging settings, you can adjust the max number of text messages
If I got anywhere near 500 message from someone I would block them.

sounds like you are a forever alone
This explains why my GoSMS backup/restore (when I switched phones) doesn't show all the messages I have with my gf.
I made the change in settings, but does anyone know what will happen if I restore the old messages again?
Will all the new ones I've gotten disappear?

No, they are added on. I've done this countless times before, mostly because I flash too many roms.

Problems with Handcent Group Messaging

Is anyone else having problems with Handcent's group messaging feature? It has worked perfectly for me in the past, but recently I've had trouble sending a SMS to multiple recipients. The send icon just keeps spinning and the SMS never gets sent. I've been able to receive group messages (messages sent to me and other recipients), and they show up correctly on Handcent as threaded messages, but I have not been able to respond to them. If anyone has a fix or any insight, that would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using the CDMA version of the Galaxy Nexus, on Verizon, and a CM9 rom. Thanks!

I've had this same problem with Samsung SGS3, I receive group messages but when I reply it just flashes and nothing is ever sent. There is some bug in their program.
Both me and my wife had similar issues with handcent (nexus4g and epic4g). We switched to GOSMS and it seems to work better for us for group msg's. We have a few friends that we often group chat with and one of them use's handcent on his droid X and often has issues too.

[Q] Group chat not working?

Does anyone else have this problem of the group chat not working properly? Im in a group chat on the stock messaging app and each time i get a message, it rather sends it to me individually rather then in the group chat itself. And it also says something weird like "Couldn't download MMS. Touch to download again. Size 1KB. Expires: ......". If i try sending a message it gives me a red exclamation point also. After awhile i get the message but like a day later. Not really the point of group texts lol. I've tried using hangouts but that gives me the same problem. Could it be the APN?

It could be the APN partly. I've seen that if I use IPv4/IPv6 rather than just the IPv6 it doesn't download or send properly. As far as group messaging make sure it's enabled in the texting app, settings, mms settings, group messaging.

What text app for group threads

I'm running stock Oreo 8.0.0 on Samsung S9 using the bundled texting app.
When I receive group texts from an iPhone user, I only see myself as a recipient; the other recipients aren't listed.
Also when I reply to what I happen to know is a group text, my reply only goes to the sender rather than to the group members.
Is there a setting I'm missing or do I need to use a different text messaging app?
I use the default messaging app on my stock S9 (VZW) and I don't have this problem. Half my family use Android-based phones and the others use iPhones. Our group conversation work just fine. However, all of the group conversation I am involved in include people already in my contacts. I'm wondering if your missing recipients is related to who is in your contacts?

Nope, the problem shows up even with those in my contact list.
Maybe I'll try a random texting app and see what happens.
Other apps exhibit the same problem. Anyone have any insight into this problem?
