Maybe go to the app in settings/apps and clear data? Idk. Mine focus fast. I think the quality is superb. I know people gripe but I came from nexus5 and this camera is better even after Google New camera update.

I still have n5 also. This camera is better. Your perception. I don't do drugs not drink so for you to use that phrase says a lot on maybe why your mind and camera doesn't focus. Lol. Enjoy what your prefer and obviously go back to your n5 if you consider it better.

I like the camera BUT I hate and I mean absolutely hate the focus when trying to take a picture of something up close.
I use to have the G2 and I love taking pictures of random things up really close for detail. Might see a frog at work and take a picture of its eye or see a really neat looking spider and take an up close picture. I keep trying to do that with this phone and the damn thing won't focus up close no matter what I do. Just blurry. Tap the screen, it'll focus for a second then go out of focus. EXTREMELY frustrating.

I have some tips that have worked for me. I notice focus is slow when the room is dark, and it's quick when there's tons of light. When using auto, keep the ISO at 200 or 400. Rely on ONLY point and shoot (no manual tap focusing) when you're outdoors and the sun is out. Also, if you're indoors and there's good lighting (very bright lights), rely on point and shoot as well. For dark scenes, go ahead and tap to focus.
I got these tips from hamdir in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51415071&postcount=8428 . Also, check out this thread to see the potential of the camera: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2694621&page=168 .
Play with the camera and mess with the ISO and EV in auto mode. EV will add or take away exposure (+ exposure makes the image brighter, - exposure makes the image darker). For manual mode, mess with the ISO and the shutter speed (the icon that looks like a lens). The higher up you go in the slide bar for the shutter speed, the faster the shutter will be (therefore letting less light in). The lower you go in the slide bar, the slower the shutter will be (letting in more light, but don't go too far down, because you might choose 1, 2, 3, or 4 second exposures).
It's been ok for me. The one problem I have is using my Bank app and taking a photo to deposit a check into my account. It doesn't work anymore.

Same for me and my credit union app. They say the problem is the M8 camera has more zoom than most, so they suggested making the check smaller instead of filling to the marks. I haven't had a check to try with since the suggestion, so I don't know if it works yet.

Gotta say after playing with one first hand...im SUPER dissapointed with the camera. Im an android faithful through and through, but I compared the pictures side by side with an iphone 4s and wow what a difference. you can zoom in so much farther and the pictures are so much clearer on the 4s. I was freaked out by this because they touted the 13MP camera, and it just doesnt deliver. It honestly looks more akin to my galaxy nexus camera quality wise. Just thought I would weigh in on my experience.
this along with the locked bootloader unfortunately might push me away from this phone.

The photojojo macro band is great in my opinion. It doesnt work well with a case though, I usually end up popping the phone out and putting the band on. You can see some of the pictures I used it on here http://www.flickr.com/photos/sad_ryu/ (This set specifically http://flic.kr/s/aHsjHjR9hr )
Any of the macro shots (most are instagramed) in my photostream were taken using a Galaxy Nexus, Note 2 or HTC One.
Its a little tricky due to shallow depth of focus, and you need good light, either sunshine or a torch, but you can get some nice shots with it.
Has anyone got any example photos taken with those?
Screen question

I was wondering why does it not work with a case on? is it due to a focus issue? I would love if i could keep my UAG case on while using the easy macro band. It seems so cool and useful
It works best when flat against the lens glass. If the case separates the two, you just get a blurry mess.

I personally still think the HTC One is superior to the G2. When comparing One to the S4, well the One hands down since the S4 is locked down right now.
i debated the same thing about a month ago. I am very happy with the ONE. I went with the one mostly because I was afraid about the lack of cases available for the verizon one. The VZW back is different than other G2s. I held both in store and the superior build qualtiy of the one put me over the edge.
development is much better on the G2 at the moment though.
Im happy with my decision.
I have played with a few of the other flagship phones like the S4 and the G2, and hands down the One takes the prize. In my opinion, that is.

I'm interested in the One because the specs are similar to my current S4. I love the design and aluminium body they used. Was just worried about the camera.

I had the S4, and the G2, and still prefer the HTC One. Maybe its the look of the UI itself, but I thought the S4 and G2 were almost the same. both very cheap cartoony looking. I was also not a fan of the back buttons at all.
There are so many USEFUL suprises on the HTC One that I have used more in a week, then the unneeded special stuff on the S4 that I had for over 2 months. I am VERY happy that I got the HTC one and sold the S4. And I wasnt even rooted on the One or S4.

I was really iffy about the camera as well since i owned the s4 at the same time. HOWEVER, granted the s4 has a much higher megapixel the One camera has a far more accurate color replicatiion. The only downside to the One cam is cropping and zooming on a photo. If you are okay with a image that comes out in excellent quality when printed at its natural size(close to 8x12 i think) then you will be good to go.

I would have to agree, I think you need to see if the plastic protector is still on the lens. I removed mine about 3 days after I got the phone. I was taking pics that looked exactly like yours do, and finally found the clear plastic protector and removed it.

The phone isn't so great at taking night shots with flash IMO. A bit too soft and not as sharp and clear as my s4. The only solution I found was to use another camera app for these type of shots. Aside from plastic on lense, a couple other things to keep in mind/check:
Camera Mode (Auto, Night Mode, etc)
Focus point (ie. when you tap on screen to focus the picture are you focusing on the actual light or the subject that you want to capture)
Cleaned lense (sometimes a dirty or scratched lense will produce noise images)
Case, which you mentioned (have you tried taking same or similar pics not behind windsheild and without the case in question)
Last, but not least, the camera comes defaulted at 9 MP (vs 13MP advertised). Have you tried setting camera to 13MP and seeing if the quality differs?
Those are all things I would check/keep in mind. My indoor performance hasn't been stellar but I know it depends on scenario. Also, using flash at night will always negatively impact your photo quality.
I would take it in for an exchange. Dont mention anything about if you tripped knox or anything. Just show them the images. I for one bought this phone for the camera and love the pics. They blow my wifes iPhone out of the water and when compared to my bosses LG G2, I still think the Note 3's is better. Sounds like you got some hardware issues.
I was focusing on the duck when I took the image. Will try with case off. I cannot locate any lenses protector on lense. It was clean. Thanks for the tips
