1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Flash a custom Recovery
3. Look HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546970 for rooting tools.

You have to unlock the bootloader from HTCDev, flash a custom recovery, make a backup and flash the root

all you need to do is goto htc's dev site for unlocking http://www.htcdev.com/
no other steps are necessary if all you want is an unlocked device to allow apps root access... i think this is what you are asking

Wrong ! Unlocking the bootloader will not give you root acces .... Like guich said, unlock , flash a custom recovery , and push the superuser.zip to gain root acces .
This is the second post this morning i read from you where you give incorrect/strange advice ! Please stop that and search for the right answer first yourself
Thank you !

dont lock the bootloader, just flash stock 4.3 images then re-root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
Thanks, I'm gonna read it and try to do it, I just wasn't sure cuz there are a lot of people that say they got problems when upgrade to 4.3 having root - unlock bootloader

no problems, let bootloader unlocked to be able to flash stock images, after, flash latest cwm with fastboot http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager and install supersu zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Thanks a LOT!, Now I'm on 4.3 stock with Root, works like a charm!!!
In the ever changing market of roots and exploits I believe it would be nice to have a device specific rooting "poll". the other reason I'm starting this thread is because I can't seem to root my phone tried towelroot but it says my device is not supported. Im running stock 4.2.2 and I want to root mainly so I can back everything up before I custom install stock 4.4.2
Towelroot works for 4.4
Being on 4.2.2 you could try the Safe-Root method depending on your actual Firmware. Otherwise you have to stick to rooting through CWM.
All methods have their threads here. Please read them.
You could also backup your data with adb without root and after update restore this adb backup to your device. So there's no need to root before installing custom 4.4.2
CWM all day! so fast and easy to do plus it's easy to unroot.

http://www.s4miniarchive.com/search/label/Root Find your model version and read the instructions, you won't regret it.
4.2.2 can be rooted using Kingo. Doesn't trip knox.

Yes, if you downgrade it to KitKat with KDZ you can root it, then you can install a bumped Lollipop ROM
Can anyone make Lollipop supported Root method, please...
If they could, they already would have. Revert to kit Kat and root

Alright, thanks. I found the original kitkat firmware, flahed it, rooted it and then flashed a custom lollipop rom.
I just wasn't sure that that when you change roms, you're build changes, as well. Now, i am.
Is their anyway i can root this phone running on the firmware named H81021y or is their no solution for it . Also do I have to downgrade? Since I have oem unlocking enabled isn't that gonna help?
Hi !
If you don't have a custom recovery, maybe a flash with flashfire and the last SuperSU zip stable on the chainfire's thread....
