Do they check it for what? They won't just show up to your house to inspect it. But if you send it back with a warrent yclaim they could potentially deny it based on Knox. That hasn't been happening much so far, but they technically could.
Please use the search feature to find how to root. The information is readily accessible.

I mean like if I turn it in for the jump to get the s5, I already have a warranty and insurance but if I root and then unroot, will tmobile check the knox count?

Probably not.
The S4 you trade in will get factory refurbished anyway and (theoretically) have firmware completely reflashed, which will wipe KNOX out, letting them resell that phone as a refurb. (No, you can't do that by reflashing firmware. But Samsung can.)
So T Mobile is unlikely to care. And the guy working the T Mobile store is unlikely to even know to check about KNOX.

Rooted tmobile S4 - Insurance/protection plan question

If I get the UVUAMDL file that you flash with Odin from the computer and take the root off, will they accept the phone or can they still see I voided it somehow? I pay 10 bucks a month for tmobiles premium handset insurance plan... I cracked the glass so I'm assuming I'll have to file a claim....
Another question, do they send you the new device first? Or do you gotta pay the waiting game with them?

That won't reset the flash counter, but it will unroot it.
But if it's with T-Mobile, I don't think it will matter.
And they usually send out the phone first.

Yeah T Mobile sends the new phoen first. Then you have like 7 days to return your old phone or they charge you $600 for it. But they'll send you a return case and everything with prepaid shipping. Just slip the old phone in there and put it in a UPS box. They are really easy to work with on stuff like this.
I have no idea if you really need to reset teh flash counter or not, but it's insanely easy to do it so you may as well. Do a search for Triangle Away by Chainfire. You just get back to complete stock rom and recovery through Odin, root using CH auto root, install Triangle Away and run it, and it will reset the flash counter. Then uninstall the Tiranlge Away app and go to the Superuser settings and click "complete unroot" (Or something like that, I forget what the term for it is, but it's obvious)
You will now have a phone with stock rom, stock recovery, no Superuser APK, and a flash counter that says 0.
I just did it last week. Took me all of 10 minutes to do the whole thing.

Flash the UVUAMDL stock file.
Use CF Auto root by Chainfire to root phone.
Use Triangle Away to reset flash counter (TA need root hence step above)
Open SuperSU app and choose "Full unroot". It will remove SU binary and SuperSU app.

Don't forget to uninstall the Triangle Away app too! (It's kind of a giveaway that you messed with it. hahah!)
It installs as a user app though, so a factory reset after this would wipe the app out anyway.

I once took a phone with Cyanogenmod to a t mobile store to get some help with something. The guy asked how I made the phone look so different. I told him it was an app from Google Play. He believed me. (Technically that was true. He was commenting on the theme, which was an apk downloaded from google pkay)

Why does everyone get warranty and insurance confused? When you file and insurance claim it does NOT matter if it's rooted, if you bricked it, or dropped it in water. You're paying the $175 deductible sobit doesn't matter. If it was a warranty exchange THEN you would have to return to stock since they only charged you $5 for an exchange.

I guess if you rooted, then used Rom Manager to put CM on there it would be an "app" that made your phone have Cyanogenmod after all.

It will not work as a backup phone. The IMEI will be blocked.
Also, while I get what you are saying and understand you are trying to suggest the most cost effective way to do something....what you are suggesting is insurance fraud and could be a felony.
Im not judging you because I agree the insurance company is dumb for making it advantageous to lie aboit what happened to a phobe. Im just saying you are advocating a crime. XDA tends to prefer that you don't do that here.

I didn't meant to promote insurance fraud. I just always at least keep battery and when micro sim cards came with the phone 4 years ago. Figured paying 180 for a new phone should cover that but I get what you mean

So I knew I was gonna have to file a claim, and it does cover whatever you do to it, so it does make sense that messing with the system like that wouldn't matter. Thanks again. I did awhile ago when i discovered it was creating a log file on my SD of everything my phone was doing network wise (even wifi). I don't think tmo needs to keep track of my Wifi activity being my home wireless has nothing to do with their network. To me it just seemed like Tmobile spyware on my phone.

You are overthinking it.
If you contested that they'd have to prove the phone was rooted and that their app wasn't just going haywire adn reporting the wrong data. And you'd have the physical phone which showed a reset flash counter and official recovery so you'd have a much stronger argument than they do.
Also, since you are rooted you can do various things to prevent apps like this from telling T Mobile anything. First you can block their permissions and second you can us a firewall app to prevent it from having access to the Wifi or Mobile data. Of course it would be able to give your minutes or data usage or anything like that. But it wont' be able to tell T Mobile anything about yoru phone either.

Well only if you catch it in time and see what this app update will do. Otherwise blocking permissions might not appear to be necessary until too late.
You make a good argument however saying that their app can be malfunctioning.

Rooting SM-N900T with MI7 firmware without tripping KNOX

Hey Guys,
I went through the forums trying to root my newly purchased Note 3 (what a sexy beast she be) without tripping the KNOX counter. I followed the vega root method but had issues generating the firmware with the script provided, It was returning an error saying the exynos version isn't compatible. After some searching I found this site:
http://www.android.gs/root-t-mobile-...s-not-tripped/
It's basically the same process as the vega method but the firmware for MI7 is ready for download and to be put into odin. I literally followed the instructions 5 mins ago and can confirm I have root and have not tripped the KNOX 0x0 counter.
Hope this helps anyone with the same specific set up on their Note 3.
I know people have had problems with kingo method of rooting but I rooted with it no problem and no firmware worries either. And no tripping knox. And I can unroot when I want. Which is great for updating via ota.
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda premium
I heard kingo works well but there is some worry add the application seems to send your info, IMIE (sp?) for example, to some Chinese server.
I used Kingo on my Tmobile Note 3 without any problem. It was super easy, and I have root.
It did not trip Knox.

As said above, your IMEI may be sent to a some random Chinese company. I'd hate to see a ton of Note 3 users suddenly have bricked phones.
Let's play this out. . . Say the Chinese gets my number please tell me exactly what happens next. EXACTLY please. No well basically, or from what I heard. . . How would the Chinese brick my phone by having my number? Exactly.

Good question and i would have to say that the most that they can do is report that number as stolen and temporarily disable your network access. All of your apps, mail, porn log ins are safe since those are stored on your phone. All you have to do is call T-Mobile and prove you owned that phone originally. Honestly your number is written on the outside of your box so anyone could have access to it.

Your warrenty (The phone no longer powers on, send me a new one) is voided by tripping Knox.
Your insurance (The $9 a month you may or may not pay for damage or loss) is not voided.

Let me rephrase that...
Tripping knox is SUPPOSED to void your warrenty. Many people are finding that Samsung/T Mobile aren't properly checking the Knox status with a warrenty claim and are honoring the warrenties anyway. But it's not a guarentee.

T Mobile is going to care once Samsung stops saying Knox tripped phones back from T Mobile. Remember, it's not T Mobile that is repairing the borken devices are reselling them as refurbished. Samsung is still doing that. T Mobile just asks as a middle man in that process. The warrenty is still Samsung's. And when Samsung tells T Mobile they won't accept any more knox tripped phones, T Mobile is going to start checking more closely.
That said, the warrenty is still invalid per the user agreement with Knox tripped. T Mobile could decide tomorrow or 6 months from now to start checking. If they do they are well within the law to deny a warrenty claim on a knox tripped phone. Just because they are ignoring it now doesn't mean they have to.

You're very welcome! If I were you though, I would wait and see that it is a confirmed "working" method. So many variables involved, like KNOX, better to be safe than sorry.
I have a friend that manages tmobile. He said that mobile CANNOT refuse an issured costumer. Because there is signed documents before Knox was even in the picture... If someone tries to refuse it. Tell them to show you some type of paper work that you have signed that says so. Or ask them to pull up your original. Contract/ or the insurance rules from day one.

And if that doesn't work, you can call the Insurance Commission in your state. Every state has one. They regulate ALL insurance matters.
The T Mobile insurance is just a normal property and casualty policy. Insurance commissions do not play around and they have absolute authority in a state to force an insurance company to pay a claim if you can prove they have no valid reason to deny it.
I am a licensed insurance rep in several states and I have dealt with insurance commissions all over the country. So I am absolutely positive about this. Every state has a process to dispute a denial for any policy, no matter how small.
All that said, I doubt you would ever have to fake it that far. Especially since the policy covers loss as much as damage. If they did deny the claim, just lose it and file the claim as a loss.
Now the warrenty is a whole different animal that is covered very differently. All different rules and hardly any governmental protections.
Sent from your phone. You should be more careful where you leave that thing.

I've never had an issue with tmobile carrying about a phone being rooted I've traded in rooted phones and gone through insurance to replace rooted phones. I doubt they care. Store manager by me is running a custom rom on his own phone
Use Xposed RootCloak and it will hide root from T-Mobile App. When I hit diagnose it says my phone is not rooted. That is if you guys care to use the app, of course.
If you're rooted, why not just remove the app completely? Freezing it is fine too, but if you know it's 100% safe to remove...
Also, this "technology" is and has already been in use... It's called Carrier IQ or Caller IQ. Typically, this is only used to report you if you are searching for bad things on the interwebz... IE, how to make a bomb, kiddy porn, etc.
Additionally, you are protected under the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act", and cannot be denied a warranty claim, regardless of Root, within reason of course... Please see this post for reference and further info:
