I purcahsed my N1 a while ago, specifically the 16GB CM version, and after plugging it into my PC for data transfer I noticed that the root is 'sdcard'. Does this mean that within the phone there is likely a built in micro SD? If there is, does anyone know a way to replace that with another SD card? (I have a 32GB micro-SD that currently has no use and 16GB doesn't store all my music!)
Also, does anyone have a link to a video or something similar which shows the N1's insides. (Similar to an XDA unboxing, where the phone is taken apart for example)
Thanks in advance!

It has a 16GB NAND flash memory module that is soldered onto the board. You can't remove it or change it. It's read as an SDcard so that it can be used properly by Android, that's all.

Unfortunately, that really gimps the mess out of the phone. Having only about 10gb usable after rom install and not having an external sdcard port AND having the internal flash soldered onto the board with no chance of upgrading it literally throws all the work they did making the camera adjustable.... into the trash can!

This little thing works wonders. It works natively with ColorOS and you can just toss a micro-SD into it. I suggest getting at least one to have for multiple phones/devices. :highfive:

Got a brand new desire and want to put a bigger SD card in before using it in anger. Apart from unmounting the existing card from the phone do I need to do anything else before swapping? The current card has a whole bunch of folders on it - do these get recreated?
No Idea if its the right way, but I just copied the folders to my PC hard disk and then copied them back onto the new larger card. This was done via a card reader rather than the phone.
Seemed to work fine fo me.
No need mate.
I simply stuck my new card in and formatted it using the phone, the folders were created during that process
What folders are those?

I'm an Android newbie but there are a bunch of folders that look like they are used to store bookmarks, photos, music etc. There is a backup folder but ALSO the user manual and the HTC sync executable which are probably worth backing up to a PC. Plus a mystery folder called rosie_scroll??
Thanks for the advice re formatting

Anyone know if this would work after upgrading to a bigger SD after a few weeks (ie with data already stored other than the system folders). As its encrypted I get the impression there might be problems?
Can't see why it shouldn't as IIRC the encryption is based on the IMEI of the handset and that won't change.
I copied as I wanted to move the HTC pc app as well.
I will be doing it again soon as this took me from the supplied 4Gb card to an 8Gb one I had around, but will do it again (complete with apps etc) when my 16Gb one arrives in the next week or so.

There are several folders in the root, for bookmarks, backups, rssreader etc.
Hello!
I'm running Eclair on my DEFY, it's rooted via z4root.
I currently hold a 2GB microSD card and, as the volume of the apps is getting higher, I wish to upgrade to a 16GB microSD (a SunDisk one).
But I'm wondering if there's more to do then simply copy the apps to a temporary directory on my pc then fill in the new card.
Anyone has yet upgraded?
--- edit: made a deep search on the forum and find out I need a class 6/8 microSD, then I have to format prior to copy up everything that was on the old microSD.
Anything else should I know?
Cheers,
C*
Nothing special to do.
Just copy your actual SD contents on the new one and Go!
I went from the 2GB for a 8GB like this without any tricks...

Class 6/8 is not needed, my 8GB is a Class2 and it work absolutly fine!
For apps the data rate ofthe SD is not really important, 'cause u'll never load large amount off data each time. And SD card are still very very very slow against RAM.
Flash memory have good random access time, that's much important than data rate.
Good data rate are only for large file transfert from/to an other device (PC, etc)
Last thing: by default le SD is not use for app installation on the defy, they use the 2GB internal memory.
You should use some App2Sd for extend this, and it's better to have Android 2.2 then.
Apps in android 2.1 arent stored on the sd card without a mod available on this phone yet.
Instead it is stored on the 2gb internal memory which should be pleanty for lots of apps

Fine, I thought there were some special "needings", I was stuck to the Motorola A1210 that was a bit tricly because of some apps hidden here and there on the microSD.

Actually the major part of the apps is installed on the microSD, I've checked several times and the percentage is so parted:
Apps/Things on the microSD 85%
Apps/Things on the Phone 23%
I'm not using any program to move stuff, but I'm intrigued by App2SD.
So thanks again =)

As said in the previous reply, I can see stuff is stored on the microSD mainly..
No just copy the stuff from you old card to the new one. And as for class 6/8 I'm using a class 4 and its fine
etherea=> dont mix apps installation et apps data
The apps files are installed on the internal memory, but every app can use SD (intern or extern, whatever is present on the phone) for store datas.
Think about GPS software. This kind of soft need 1, 2 or more GB for maps storage.
The apps itself is on the "apps" space on the internal memory and all the maps stuff are on SD (intern or extern)
You can use software like diskusages to see what is where

Apps are not stored on the sd, however some apps data is.
Well thank you both, I still need to read a lot about the phone and aout Android but your answers did clarify a bit =)
Then, I upgraded to a 8GB SanDisk microSD with no problem.
The only minor issue was a duplicate of a couple of non-vital directories and related data, which were wiped out almost in a second.
Everything's working fine and have now much more space to fill in =)
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and hints!

Hi, I seem to be having an odd problem with my Desire, I'm running a Stock Desire on T-Mobile UK, using the SD card that came with the phone, I had no problems until yesterday when the phone reported that no SD card was in it, it is acting as if no card is in it at all when using the Samsung card that came with it. First thing I tried was to put the Micro SD card in my Laptop, it worked, could read the files, so I was worried that the card reader on the phone had gone, they I found an old Nokia 512 MB card and tried that in the desire, it worked fine, no problems, so I'm not quiet sure what to do from here.
I was thinking backup the micro SD that came with the phone, format it in windows, and then see if it works, one question, what would be the best way to back it up?, are there hidden files that require extra software rather than just dragging and dropping in windows?
If not then I will buy a new SD and hope that works.
Thanks for any help
PS. I don't know if this is in the wrong section, so sorry if it is.
Since it can't read the card anymore, you can't backup apps. Format it with Android, or use SDFormatter.

Hi all. I'm currently running CM7.2 Stable with radio .1111 (used to be the newer .0320) and I can't get any SD card to mount for an extended period of time in recovery, Android, or fastboot. I'm thinking the memory card reader is either loose on the motherboard of the phone or is starting to go. Unfortunately this means that I can no longer take pictures and use apps that require the SD card. Does anyone know if it's possible to use the internal memory (such as /data or /system) as a "Virtual" SD card? Any search I've done on google hasn't turned up much. I'm hoping to get a system dev's; or anyone else with experience; input on this. Thanks.

You might want to try a different recovery or rom to see if that still happens. (although it is probably a hardware issue, it's good to make sure) Do you still have warranty?

I'm almost 100% positive that it's hardware, but I also don't have a safe / reliable way of flashing a different rom/recovery anyway because of the chance of the SD disappearing during a flash. Also when searching for PG32IMG.zip, fastboot hangs for a little bit when trying to access the SD card so that helped me verify that it's hardware. Unfortunately I got the screen digitizer replaced on my phone by a 3rd party so my warranty is void, it's also been more than a year since I bought the phone (pretty sure the warranty is just for a year).

Maybe you could try a different sd card.
Or maybe you could take this as a hint to upgrade
And AFAIK there is no way to seperate the internal memory, as some roms need all of it/most of it. I know you could do it the other way around, partitioning an SD card to trick the phone into thinking part of the sd card was phone memory.

I mentioned in my first post that any SD card won't work. I would like to upgrade to a Nexus phone (good CM support) but I'm not due for one until February. The data partition is pretty open in terms of space, especially if you don't have a lot of apps for it. I tried creating a 300MB .img file in /data and mounting it to /sdcard but that didn't work. I'd like for a ROM developer or someone who has in-depth knowledge about the storage systems to hopefully answer. Dalingrin and other developers were able to use the HP Touchpad's internal storage as an SD card, I'd like to do the same.
Hi I recently purchased a Note 2 from a guy on craigslist. I checked out the phone at purchase and everything proved to be correct. I didn't expect however that he had the phone rooted. I'm a big fan of rooting phones that don't have a good operating systems already or didn't have Android JB but phones like the galaxy phones I believe don't necessarily need to be rooted. I was pissed because I wanted it with stock rom but I just decided to accept it and unroot it myself. So after a long process I got it unrooted and running the latest stock rom and everything seemed to work except for one thing. When I transfered all of the Music files from my previous phones microSD(16gb) to my new one(64gb) none of the music files worked. All of them wouldn't play and the phone would say it can't open the file or something like that. So I tried formating the microSD and trying to put the files on the microSD again and still the files wouldn't play. I had to format the card through the phone itself and transfer the files through Samsung Kies just for 3/4 of the music to work. I can deal with 3/4 but now when I transfer a video file weather through Kies or straight to the folder none of the files play. When trying to play them nothing shows or sounds it's just black screen, you can fast foward or skip but nothing shows. I never thought I would have this much trouble with this phone but it appears as though there's a virus on the phone or card or something that is preventing video and music files to play. Even when trying to play files from the phone on Windows Media Player or any other music/video player the files don't play. I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Please help me I have no idea what to do. Thanks in advance.

So you're saying it's the microSD's format? It has nothing to do with the fact that the phone was rooted and that it might have a bug? Since you're unrooted, you can't flash a new kernel so you may want to dismiss that last thing.
Have you tried only one 64gb microSD? It seems that your card may be bad or it's not formatted correctly for the stock firmware... I would test out another 64gb card and see if that works since the 16 works just fine.
Edit: Sorry... a little vague... the card needs to be formatted as Exfat if you can do that through Windows, that should work in case the card is actually in good condition.

I don't have any other 64gb microSD cards, the one I have came with the phone. The logo and everything on the card have faded out so I don't know what brand but I think it's sandisk. I don't know at this point I'm thinking it has to be the card because I've tried nearly everything and it's still not working the way I want it to. I formatted it using Windows UGI to FAT32 since thats what you said and that was the same format as the 16gb and sure enough most of the music works with some not working. So I tried putting movies on the card and once I didn't see a preview on the bottom left I knew it wasn't going to work. Seems like the card is bipolar I have a 32gb micro I'll try that, it's brand new still haven't used it, should I just put it in and see if it works or should I format it to FAT32? By the way Thanks again really appreciate your help!

I think he mention phone is rooted sorry if misread that part thats the reason i recommend to flashed kernel that support exFAT, actually as far as i know 64gb microsd card default format is already exFAT and 32 or 16gb is FAT32 and some are in exFAT. If doesnt want to flashed kernel then i recommend format sdcard from computer just plug in from card then right mouse that drive then format and select FAT32 format. If some instance your computer can't read your microsd card and cant format there is chance thar your microsd card maybe bad.

If you can see the files in the player, and you can see the sd card directory using a file explorer, its not the card. I had to add two lines to my system settings file. I'm sorry I don't remember the file name or the content of the two lines. Maybe my comment will jog someone's memory.

I've formatted it to exFat a million times. That what I originally was formatting it to because windows quick format doesn't have a FAT32 option only exFat which was default and NTFS. exFat is not the problem.
It's looking more and more like SD damage...
Considering the fact that other cards work fine...
Copy your media to PC from the SD...and get a new card ?
I know it sucks...
And once the new card is installed...be "very" careful moving those files back as they may be messed up...
I'd pull a few songs from the PC after you copy them over and test them on another card to be sure before loading it to a new and expensive SD...
It sounds like the phone is fine...g
