Got a brand new desire and want to put a bigger SD card in before using it in anger. Apart from unmounting the existing card from the phone do I need to do anything else before swapping? The current card has a whole bunch of folders on it - do these get recreated?
No Idea if its the right way, but I just copied the folders to my PC hard disk and then copied them back onto the new larger card. This was done via a card reader rather than the phone.
Seemed to work fine fo me.
No need mate.
I simply stuck my new card in and formatted it using the phone, the folders were created during that process
What folders are those?

I'm an Android newbie but there are a bunch of folders that look like they are used to store bookmarks, photos, music etc. There is a backup folder but ALSO the user manual and the HTC sync executable which are probably worth backing up to a PC. Plus a mystery folder called rosie_scroll??
Thanks for the advice re formatting

Anyone know if this would work after upgrading to a bigger SD after a few weeks (ie with data already stored other than the system folders). As its encrypted I get the impression there might be problems?
Can't see why it shouldn't as IIRC the encryption is based on the IMEI of the handset and that won't change.
I copied as I wanted to move the HTC pc app as well.
I will be doing it again soon as this took me from the supplied 4Gb card to an 8Gb one I had around, but will do it again (complete with apps etc) when my 16Gb one arrives in the next week or so.

Can't remember which ones were from the format and which ones were created while using the phone.
There are several folders in the root, for bookmarks, backups, rssreader etc.

replacing the stock 4gb card with 16gb.
Is it ok to copy ALL folders and files (including hidden etc) from one card to the other, then just use it? Or do I need to format the new card from the phone or some other procedure? cheers
I just copied the whole lot to my new 16GB and put it in and worked just like before but with more space
Thats great. Just what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the feedback.
No problems, and enjoy the extra space!

I've done almost the same as you but I've done one extra step. Put in the new 16gb card to the phone and then through settings, format the card..... then do all the copying!
That way everything works
i copied from a 4 gb card to an 8 gb card with no issues and no pre formatting of the card on the desire. I think your market issue might be unrelated. Maybe try restarting your phone, checking your network content restriction setting and accessing over WiFi not 3g.

cheers guys, not sure what started the issue. but i could sort it out the usual way as stated above. quick call to t-mobile this morning they took the lock off, but couldnt tell me why it happened.
thanks for the replies all. Good info. I will ut the blank 16gb in phone and format via settings. Then I'll put the 4gb back in phone, copy everything off it onto PC, put 16gb card in phone, copy everything on. Job done. We hope. Will report back if any problems. cheers.
Yup just transfer everything across to a bigger capacity card
I just bought a 32G card on Amazon, should be here shortly. When it gets here, is it as simple as moving everything on my current card to the new card, plugging in the new card and that's that, or is there something else I need to do? Does the existing card have a specific name or reference that the system uses that I need to be aware of, for instance?
I've moved quite a few APP2SD apps to the card, if it makes a difference. Also, phone is rooted.
Thanks much

Make sure the new card is formatted. If it is not, go into recovery and format it or format it from within the EVO or via a computer. Afterwards, just copy the contents from your old card onto your new one.
Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know.
Was your old card partitioned?
also make sure you click the option to view hidden files on the old sd card, to make sure you copy everything and dont skip those hidden files, which contain important info

ah yes, good tip, would not have thought to do that, but that makes perfect sense...
Which card did you get? Lets hope it's not a lexar. I had data corruption issues with it not too long after installation.
Hi, I seem to be having an odd problem with my Desire, I'm running a Stock Desire on T-Mobile UK, using the SD card that came with the phone, I had no problems until yesterday when the phone reported that no SD card was in it, it is acting as if no card is in it at all when using the Samsung card that came with it. First thing I tried was to put the Micro SD card in my Laptop, it worked, could read the files, so I was worried that the card reader on the phone had gone, they I found an old Nokia 512 MB card and tried that in the desire, it worked fine, no problems, so I'm not quiet sure what to do from here.
I was thinking backup the micro SD that came with the phone, format it in windows, and then see if it works, one question, what would be the best way to back it up?, are there hidden files that require extra software rather than just dragging and dropping in windows?
If not then I will buy a new SD and hope that works.
Thanks for any help
PS. I don't know if this is in the wrong section, so sorry if it is.
Since it can't read the card anymore, you can't backup apps. Format it with Android, or use SDFormatter.

By search Deleted the task killer apps & non used apps & move the most app from Phone to SD card to make a good free space in the phone storage and nothing changed. ?
Waiting for genius Guys.

...assuming you're on stock DHD RUU, I would switch off your phone, take out the SD and just literally connect both cards to a PC, then copy all content from one card to another... making sure all hidden files are accounted for as well.
After that, you plug in your new SD into the phone and switch it on...
You technically don't lose data since you've still got the old SD Card you've copied from anyway. ^_^

Hi,
Just connect your device as HDD to your PC and copy all files and folders from the old card to your PC. Then change the cards in the device and copy all files and folders back to the device. That's all

As mention before just a copy and paste will do.
If you have some games installed (Gameloft for exemple) they will check for files and just let them do their job as they will imediately look for the content in the new SD.
If you want to make sure your date will be saved you can also use Titanium backup and just backup the data, not the apps!
Then if you miss something later you can import and it will import related to the app

I've got two MicroSD to USB adapters, I just plug both in and let it do its business without having to take the extra step of copying from computer to new SD.. ^_^
Having said that, I would recommend you do a full format to fat32 on your new SDCARD... preferably with the linux Gparted tool.
...probably unnecessary, but I personally make it a point to ensure a 'clean slate' whenever I start with a new SDCard, with hopes of avoiding disaster later down the line... >_<

Regarding the formating the sd I normally put the empty card on the phone and format via phone to be extra sure it will definitely work 100%. Then just copy as stated on previous posts.

Hi I recently purchased a Note 2 from a guy on craigslist. I checked out the phone at purchase and everything proved to be correct. I didn't expect however that he had the phone rooted. I'm a big fan of rooting phones that don't have a good operating systems already or didn't have Android JB but phones like the galaxy phones I believe don't necessarily need to be rooted. I was pissed because I wanted it with stock rom but I just decided to accept it and unroot it myself. So after a long process I got it unrooted and running the latest stock rom and everything seemed to work except for one thing. When I transfered all of the Music files from my previous phones microSD(16gb) to my new one(64gb) none of the music files worked. All of them wouldn't play and the phone would say it can't open the file or something like that. So I tried formating the microSD and trying to put the files on the microSD again and still the files wouldn't play. I had to format the card through the phone itself and transfer the files through Samsung Kies just for 3/4 of the music to work. I can deal with 3/4 but now when I transfer a video file weather through Kies or straight to the folder none of the files play. When trying to play them nothing shows or sounds it's just black screen, you can fast foward or skip but nothing shows. I never thought I would have this much trouble with this phone but it appears as though there's a virus on the phone or card or something that is preventing video and music files to play. Even when trying to play files from the phone on Windows Media Player or any other music/video player the files don't play. I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Please help me I have no idea what to do. Thanks in advance.

So you're saying it's the microSD's format? It has nothing to do with the fact that the phone was rooted and that it might have a bug? Would kind of make sense because when I put the 16gb sd card in the phone all of the music files work. So it's the format, but I need a kernel? I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. It'll show the phone but it wont show anything inside it just shows blank. Excuse me if I'm coming off idiotic, I have no experience with this phone or 64gb microSD cards lol

Since you're unrooted, you can't flash a new kernel so you may want to dismiss that last thing.
Have you tried only one 64gb microSD? It seems that your card may be bad or it's not formatted correctly for the stock firmware... I would test out another 64gb card and see if that works since the 16 works just fine.
Edit: Sorry... a little vague... the card needs to be formatted as Exfat if you can do that through Windows, that should work in case the card is actually in good condition.

I don't have any other 64gb microSD cards, the one I have came with the phone. The logo and everything on the card have faded out so I don't know what brand but I think it's sandisk. I don't know at this point I'm thinking it has to be the card because I've tried nearly everything and it's still not working the way I want it to. I formatted it using Windows UGI to FAT32 since thats what you said and that was the same format as the 16gb and sure enough most of the music works with some not working. So I tried putting movies on the card and once I didn't see a preview on the bottom left I knew it wasn't going to work. Seems like the card is bipolar I have a 32gb micro I'll try that, it's brand new still haven't used it, should I just put it in and see if it works or should I format it to FAT32? By the way Thanks again really appreciate your help!

I think he mention phone is rooted sorry if misread that part thats the reason i recommend to flashed kernel that support exFAT, actually as far as i know 64gb microsd card default format is already exFAT and 32 or 16gb is FAT32 and some are in exFAT. If doesnt want to flashed kernel then i recommend format sdcard from computer just plug in from card then right mouse that drive then format and select FAT32 format. If some instance your computer can't read your microsd card and cant format there is chance thar your microsd card maybe bad.

If you can see the files in the player, and you can see the sd card directory using a file explorer, its not the card. I had to add two lines to my system settings file. I'm sorry I don't remember the file name or the content of the two lines. Maybe my comment will jog someone's memory.

I can see the files but they do not work, At this point everything is leading to the problem being the card. I mean my other SD cards work with the phone and have no problem playing music or video files. I've tried nearly everything and the card still continues to malfunction.

I've formatted it to exFat a million times. That what I originally was formatting it to because windows quick format doesn't have a FAT32 option only exFat which was default and NTFS. exFat is not the problem.
It's looking more and more like SD damage...
Considering the fact that other cards work fine...
Copy your media to PC from the SD...and get a new card ?
I know it sucks...
And once the new card is installed...be "very" careful moving those files back as they may be messed up...
I'd pull a few songs from the PC after you copy them over and test them on another card to be sure before loading it to a new and expensive SD...
It sounds like the phone is fine...g

I'm not being a scumbag. The card works it's just has some problems but it works. I mean I don't know how the card would react on another phone or maybe someone would use it as their card for their camera I don't know. You're acting like it doesn't work at all and I'm going to try to screw somebody into buying a defective card.
