Even though it has no volume buttons on the remote,will the Fire TV have any other source of volume control, maybe within the apps or perhaps using a keyboard media keys?
This would be great for those using PC speakers that don't have a remote or for not having to use two remotes. Of all the set tops I have used, only Chromecast allows volume control via app. I can even turn off the phone's screen and still be able to use the volume buttons.
I like the idea of controlling my volume with the FTV remote. It's android so maybe someone could tie system volume to the up and down buttons on the ring button of the FTV remote during video play back or audio playback. I do recognize there are times when you want to use the up and down rather than volume control though.

Yea I am trying to watch prime movie right now and I can barley here it with my tv volume all the way up. Volume boosting options would be nice too
I also second this requirement. Using NetFlix with my Bluetooth speakers is a pain to control volume. Would be awesome to be able to use AFTV own remote control.

I ended up with buying speakers or an amplifier with a volume remote control instead.
Under 13, XBMC had a volume control that let you adjust gain during video playback (not music playback, IIRC.)
So it's possible to adjust the gain of the digital output - but it's important to understand that it is a digital output, whether via HDMI or optical out, and many apps simply will not touch a digital volume - doing so in some ways defeats the point of digitally reproducing sound since in theory you want to avoid altering the signal in the digital domain, you want to get it to the analog gain stage untouched, and then increase the signal amplitude there.
Ah, figured it out:
You need to disable passthrough in the audio menu of the video you're watching -- failing to do that means that you're telling the system 'pass through an exact copy of the audio' - which precludes fiddling with the gain of the signal (and thus compressing it.)
Once that's done, the gain slider operates.
Kodi has controls for adjusting the volume. I use Lepai 2.1 amplifier with 2 speakers and a passive sub-woofer. I use Kodi to watch my OTA (Over-the-Air) digital recordings. It goes from HDMI, to the TOS digital out, converted to RCA out to the amplifier. If Kodi can adjust the volume for the recorded OTA programming, there is now reason why FireTv does not have some main volume control. That would be nice.

It's a shame that no solution to this has been found. I get that Kodi has it but that's not all I watch with my firestick.
Curious, what happens if you connect a media remote (BT keyboard or Rii style remote) and press the volume controls? On my old Android AMLogic box, it adjusts the system volume. This works for me because I use an analog amplifier and projector for watching, and just turn the amp a little higher than I usually want it. That way I can "turn down" the system volume to about 75% and then go up and down as needed for whatever I'm watching.
I'm thinking of replacing my box with a Fire Stick (the lack of native DRM content in HD is getting to me, I only get HD with Kodi), but this very basic functionality might be a deal breaker for me. I know the new remotes have volume but they control the TV / reciever's IR (if there is one). I want to adjust the Android system volume! Is there no way on the Fire OS?

i have a rii remote the volume buttons dont do anything. for full use of these remotes the device has to be full android not modified like amazon has. rii remotes are great with rooted firetv with xposed edge. i havent used kodi in min but i use to have my remote mapped to turn up volume amplication on low sounding videos.
Aw man. I already have full android devices, but the cheap ones (read: anything that isn't as obscenely priced as an nvidia shield) don't handle DRM content like Amazon and Netflix in anything more than 480p. I seriously hate how complicated DRM makes things, I pay for Amazon and Netflix, but to get full quality content out of my device it's easier to pirate it with a Kodi plug in. Ridiculous.
I was hoping a Fire Stick could be a good alternative, but it sounds like it has its own user experience issues in the way I want to use it.
Rooted Fire TV w/Exposed- does that work on all editions of the stick? And would the volume buttons work then as well?

yes xposed edge would work with any rooted device(need xposed installer) however no control over fire tv volume believe its fixed. edge allows for button remapping which pairs well with a rii remote, makes all the buttons that have no function with fire tv have a function of your choice

Map VolumeAmplification to your Up and Down keys. It's not volume, but it works half decent...

Not sure.. The ideal solution is something like a Harmony and Flirc on the FIRE TV. I've had no luck with Flirc but I haven't tried in a while. The new keymap in XBMC has been good enough. I don't miss the TV remote with CEC happening between the FireTV and my TV. True volume I don't thing is possible on the FTV, i it only outputs over HDMI or Optical, so I think it's up to the TV or receiver to do true volume.
I may be wrong though...
So to my surprise, my regular sony tv remote (IR) is able to control my AFTV out of the box. i originally thought i would need to buy a USB IR blaster for this. However, my guess is the Bravia sync is playing the part here. I seem to be able to replicate most things (directional pad, select, return) but don't think i have a button on here that can do the Home button or the Contextual (Hamburger menu) button.
Is there a way to configure this somehow?

I have a Bravia also and my Sony remote controls the Fire TV. You're correct that the Bravia Sync (CEC) is doing the job.
On my Sony remote the blue "Home" button works as the Context (hamburger) button, at least in XBMC it does.
I can't find a button that replicates the Fire TV "Home" button though, and I don't believe there's an way to configure this.
Does yours work ok all of the time? For me, after a while the FireTV seems to break all my CEC communication, so my TV stops controlling my audio system and doesn't see any connected devices, only pulling the power from the FireTV will fix this, but then after a while (sometimes hours, sometimes a couple of days) it breaks again.
It's using the HDMI cable/slot that my WDTV Live SMP was using and that never had a problem so I don't think it's the HDMI cable at fault.

Yeah i figured out that i needed to change some settings to allow the remote to replicate the "hamburger" button.
I find it a bit laggy (understandable) compared to the amazon remote, and the lack of a Home button makes me think I'll eventually just use two remotes, sacrificing a bit of convenience that way. I haven't had the issue you've had yet though; i've only had it a few days though. My setup is pretty simple though, just my tv hooked up to the AFTV.
I have KODI on my AFTV connected to a Phillips TV and a Bose Speaker set connected to the TV. Is there a way to control the volume? Kodi volume control doesn't work? Please help!

I use an app called Base EQ. It has an equalizer with a wide range of choices on one side, and volume control on the other. You can't adjust the volume with the remote, but it works with a mouse. The only downside might be that you can't adjust the volume through the app while in another app. You could also try Pie Control and other similar apps. I actually use Pie Control on my Fire TV, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. A mouse is needed to control Pie with, but if I remember right it does have volume control options that can be placed on one of the two available levels. If possible, I'd recommend installing Aptoid, since the last time I tried to find Pie Control in the Playstore I couldn't find it. It's checking out.

I'm using my fire stick through an old monitor with only vga-in via an hdmi to vga adaptor with audio-out. all is working splendidly but its just crossed my mind that I've no control over the volume as I prefer to use my Nokia md12 bt speakers line-in.
I'm not looking for a booster or equalizer, just a linear (not rotary) volume apk so I can avoid disturbing the neighbours.
It's unrooted and I'm sideloading with the excellent fireTv utility. any ideas welcome.

Been looking for this answer for years. The only thing i ever found was in KODI, you can set a amplifier to work. It isn't true volume control and only works in kodi, but it was good for a monitor with me...

You can use a Bluetooth speaker or audio amplifier to control the audio volume.
Or, connect your Fire stick to your TV or PC monitor with speaker built-in to control the audio volume using TV remote (not a Fire stick).
