[Q] Changing carries - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hi everyone I have a note 2 with sprint looking to jump to t mobile. All the asop and cm roms have low sound when you are in a call even the speaker is very low I am not a dev and know one can seem to fix the problem, I am not complaining just I like asop and cm roms and I have big beefy hands and I prefer the large screens of Samsung's note series. I hate TW and always root my phones but I always find my self going back to TW on my note 2. Now to the question how is the sound and I guess since I am asking the question how is the over all performance of the note 3 running cm or asop ? Now I know running a different software on a device is not going to be perfect but I would at-least be able to hear comfortably with the phone to my ear or the device being on speaker. And I thank anyone for taking the time to indulge me by answering this question. And if I have offended anyone I apologize. The reason for question is I don't own the device thanks in advance.

Any body

Possibly moving over from Nexus to Note 2

Hi All
Current nexus 4 owner considering upgrading to a Note 2 !!!!
Have a couple of quick questions wondering if anyone can help.
1, Can you use headsets designed for iPhone with it, the nexus 4 is fine, as in the mic and play button work (volume still doesnt but ive learnt to live with that)
2. How is the CM port on it. Problem I have with Samsung products is that I despise touchwiz. I love, vanilla stock android.
Which brings me onto 3.
3. If Cm isn't great, would it at least be possible to install the "People" "Phone" and "Messaging Apps" and I think I could live with that
Many thanks for your help
1. Don't know abour iPhone but sometimes I use my sis S ii earphones it works fine.
2. cm and rooting is easy to port on it but you will loose S pen effets rooting makes S pen useless. And if younlike atock you can use apex launcher yiu can get the paid version in free from blackmart.
3. Yup in note ii you have motions if you're messaging someone then u can uust put the phone on your eyer and call him n9 need to go to dialer to dial

1. I have the Beats Mixrs, plat/pause and mic work with my note 2 so you should be fine.
2. CM, I belive, is mostly stable and getting better and better thanks to the dedicated devs.

Cyanogenmod and AOSP ROMs are by and large in a strong beta state right now on N2. And make nice daily driver roms now imho. SPEN still works on them, but many of the native features are not functional.

Also wanted to note that when I double pressed play/pause button it would skip song.

Rooting has no effect on spen. The pen even works on aosp roms as an input device, just doesn't have all of the proprietary features like screenshots, etc.
I like to break stuff!

OTOH even a "light" TWiz ROM is 900MB-1GB...whereas an AOSP ROM is ~150MB

1 the note 2 comes with its own headset with in line controls that works just fine, even has multiple size and shaped pairs of earbuds to ensure a good fit.
2. There are plenty of stable AOSP/CM source built roms including cm10/10.1, paranoid android, vanilla rootbox, linaro carbonrom, aokp, etc. You will lose some of the features of the note such as motions and the button functions of the spen.
3. There are AOSP themed twiz roms that retain all of the stock features but look more like AOSP, including either themed dialer, mms , contacts, or having them replaced with their aosp counterparts.
I like to break stuff!

I can only speak to #1
You cannot use EarPods with the Note 2 for phone calls, the other end gets a high pitch sound. I tested this on two Note 2s and a Galaxy S3. You can use the Apple Ear Buds for phone calls without issue, it's only an issue for the new EarPods. This was/has been a huge bummer for me because I cannot stand in-ear, I feel like I'm underwater when I talk and they are not comfortable. I have yet to find a competitive solution to the passive sound and comfort that EarPods offers.
Also the AT&T Note 2 does not ship with any earphones, the Galaxy S3 does.
CM is going to suck. S-pen, MHL, GPS and a dozen other things will be either nonfunctional or flaky as hell.

Spen works. Gps is flaky for now but there is a fix being worked on and just had to be released into the nightlies. Mhl does not work. Everything else works on cm10.1.

Huh?
GPS? Works fine here on PACMan ROM 3
SPen? Works, apart from the SPen service and Sammy's SPen Note (use Papyrus)
MHL? I've never used it...but I suspect it works in some capacity...as you haven't demonstrated yet a working knowledge of what does and does not work on Cyanogenmod on the Note 2 presently.
Idk why is this even a question. Hardly a challenge indeed. Note2 is amazing.

I'm not bashing CM or the developers. Glad they got the spen working.
MHL is a dealbreaker.
Things like the GPS working on some roms, some nightlys, for some users, some of the time is what keeps me away. It's a difficult process and I'm sure it will all work eventually. In the meantime I'd rather put up with the uglier touchwiz interface and have full use of this awesome hardware.

I'd be very interested to see how little TouchWiz remains in some of these. I'd like to keep the S-Pen stuff, but man TouchWiz is just plain ugly.

Will update if this changes.

New to Note II, quick ques re: video bugs, theme chooser

Hi guys. After accidentally wandering into the N7105 boards, I was finally directed here. I'm coming off of an Infuse running Beanstalk. I haven't even activated the phone yet, and already I'm looking at the ROMs I have a couple of quick (hopefully) questions.
On my Infuse, I had a heck of a time with choppy video recording. Is that just the case with the Note 2? And, if so, what should I avoid to keep that from happening...just the ROMs based off of CM10.1, or any ROM that's ported or modded past 4.1?
If I end up avoiding those, am I effectively locked out from using Theme Chooser themes?
Sorry for the newb questions. I just want to hit the ground running

So far from my experience the Note's video capture is amazing, it even has slo mo. I have not tested capture in AOSP, but I can say from prior experiences that you will not get AS good quality, but it is not very much different. I stayed on Touchwiz because I like all the extra camera stuff that works better like burst and slo mo and other things, and I hacked on the android 4.1 camera so I can do photosphere.
In the end its all up to you, and since you haven't really done much to the phone, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to try different roms if you backup!
Good luck and welcome to the Note 2, you will enjoy it

[Q] Few questions before I buy Note 2

Hello friends,
I am considering to buy a Note 2 to replace my main device as Sensation's touchscreen failed upon me.
I have few questions and I will appreciate your valuable replies.
1. Is Note 2 hardware good enough for next 2 years? I don't play much games and mostly Subway Surfer, Real Racing, MC4. Maybe half hour a month. But I want to be able to run all upcoming Android versions (atleast till developers support this device).
2. I read about SDS somewhere few months before. Is every Note 2 affected? I can't afford to have an expensive paper weight.
3. Does Note 2 have some dual-boot kernel?
4. Any ROM with Note 3 features esp that circle popup thing (or its my wishful thinking ) ?
5. Otherwise which would be recommended Custom Stock ROM, Recovery and kernel (dual-boot is definitely preferred)?
6. Any other major hardware bugs?
7. Btw, could someone guide me as how to check if I decide to buy my friend's old Note 2? How I check it for faults esp hardware? I am getting tempted as I could save some good money for other accessories
If there is something else which hasn't come to my mind but is important please feel free to add. I would be much obliged
Thank you so much !!!

1. Im fairly sure the phone will be extrwmwly adequate 2 years from now (obviously no one knows for sure) but the quad core processor is very capable of playimg the ges you mention. Although there are devices out that already have octo core processors, they all are only usong 4 at any one time and the differences are bare noticable at best.
2. As long as you are getting your phone from an authorized dealer then you shouldnt worry about SDS as that comes with older models and should come with a warrenty that would allow for replacement (one way or another)
3. The guy that built the (either S2 or S3) dual boot kernal was receiving donations to help him fund the tools to make it back in Jan-Mar of this year and I havent heard anything since... nor have I seen anything about it anywhere (atleast not on TMO LTE version. Youre more than welcome to search around a bit yourself)
4. Yes and No... there is but Team E (or whoever) has certain restrictions (really just permission only use) on alot of the Note 3 features that have been made for the Note 2... not really stone walling development, just protecting their hardwork and asking for proper credits, no alterations without reporting back to them, etc... it will be in every new rom eventually
5. Really a matter of who you ask and personal preference. I myself love Ptmr3s Jedi series (Master for TMO WiFi calling or X for other Note 2) but thats because 4.4 isnt out and I love the functionality that TW has for the particular device (samsung hasnt open sourced their SPen, MultiWindow, etc) so theyre not on non-TW BASED roms.. if you prefer AOSP, AOKP, or Paranoid Andriod, or PACMAN, etc than there are carious roms to pick and choose from. As for Kernal... each rom will provide (or users will post kernals that are compatible (I.e. dont use just any kernal on any rom... only what has been tested and proven).
6. Nothing major that isnt morw than an isolated incident at best... obviously of roms are newer or in nightly stages there will be bugs but nothing really hardware related... should mention sometimes on calls, the person your talking to will here themselves (echo) but that is sorta sparatic at best and most roms its not that bad and nothing major (again not really hardware related)
7. eMMC bug checker app. Download from play store, (look up the thread on here) and it will show you what to look for
Hope this helps...
Ultimately the Note should be continued to be developed for some time and able to withstand another 2 years of updates and new handsets. Already have 4.4 on TMO (omnirom - though not a daily driver) and carriers are pushing out stock 4.3 ASAP

Thank you for detailed reply.
So if I am buying new deice I wouldn't have that SDS bug. Right?
I am little surprised (and disappointed) that a powerful device like Note 2 doesn't have dual-boot functionality. That way I could run both Stock (I love various TW functionalities) and AOSP/AOKP/PA, etc
Could you plz provide link or name of the ROM with Note 3 features? Does it have that circle thing?
Thank you once again !!!

No idea whats it called. Yes using S-Pen.
In my country we don't have carrier thing. We have to buy devices at full price
Find out the model of the note 2 amd visit that particular xda thread for further info on uograded custom roms amd updates... also (in case you dont know better... dont flash a rom designed for a dofferwmt device (model number) unless you know what to do.. youll lose cell service and have a bunch of stuff to do just to fix it (some people have ecpensive paper weights)
Good luck, I think the note 2 is a good decision on your part

Yes this circle thing I was talking about. So its called S-Finder....ok

And, I am glad to have given you yours first Thanks here
Thank you mate
Yes it's working verry good. I am using DN3 as we speak and it's a daily driver for me. The rom does not have yet note 3 camera and have a few minor bugs but nothing serious.
For me is as if a bot a note 3 and next update of the rom was anounced allready by the developers.
Edit:
Never felt the need of dual boot and didnt heard of it either for note II.
Please excuse my english...not my native language

reason to update rom?

Hi everyone, my wife has had my old note 2 running Novella rom. It was always a great rom and i loved it but my wife has a way with electronics that is unbelieveable. She can destroy a perfectly working phone in ways i just dont understand. Anyway, is there any rom out there that really stands out without going to lolipop? Honestly lolipop may be fine its just the only exposure ive had is with locked down versions. I hate to ask this but ive been out of the note 2 scene for so long that im afraid ill miss something important. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Ive given her my perfectly tricked out note 3 so this note 2 will be mine. Thanks !
Touchwiz or AOSP?

I used to think the same exact way until I purchased this one,now I still have my beloved Nexus 5 and my Samsung Tab S 8.4 so I'm not completely tainted.
After owning Android for over 8 years what you mention above is exactly why I have become board with Android.
I've mentioned it before in past threads how dry and plain the Roms have become sense 5.0
No one builds from complete scratch anymore, just look at the credits, commits.
Other than stock Roms Cyanogenmod is always the base witch means out the gate your Camera and sound won't work.

It's a matter of preference and philosophy. Most of us want an excellent experience and there are trade-offs regardless of whether you run stock or unlock/root and install custom roms or hacks. In my case T-Mobile wifi calling has recently become an essential feature because of signal strength problems in my house, so I'm pretty much confined to using T-Mobile branded stock devices. Before this I always rooted and installed roms, but I can't say I miss the added control and functionality (too much, anyway). I still prefer Android to iPhone because I feel there is more feature selectivity, but I understand the OPs position and hope his iPhone serves him well. Best of luck!

Not pointless really,I found a solution to most issues and felt the need to share.
No need for Roms if it runs good out of the box or people would be hacking past just teathering and the App Store
