New to Note II, quick ques re: video bugs, theme chooser - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi guys. After accidentally wandering into the N7105 boards, I was finally directed here. I'm coming off of an Infuse running Beanstalk. I haven't even activated the phone yet, and already I'm looking at the ROMs I have a couple of quick (hopefully) questions.
On my Infuse, I had a heck of a time with choppy video recording. Is that just the case with the Note 2? And, if so, what should I avoid to keep that from happening...just the ROMs based off of CM10.1, or any ROM that's ported or modded past 4.1?
If I end up avoiding those, am I effectively locked out from using Theme Chooser themes?
Sorry for the newb questions. I just want to hit the ground running

So far from my experience the Note's video capture is amazing, it even has slo mo. I have not tested capture in AOSP, but I can say from prior experiences that you will not get AS good quality, but it is not very much different. I stayed on Touchwiz because I like all the extra camera stuff that works better like burst and slo mo and other things, and I hacked on the android 4.1 camera so I can do photosphere.
In the end its all up to you, and since you haven't really done much to the phone, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to try different roms if you backup!
Good luck and welcome to the Note 2, you will enjoy it

tablet UI on GS3

I have been wondering for a while , how many % of the users in here use aosp based roms (like aokp cm9/10 etc ) and the rest of them using TW based roms , is there a decent percentage of SGS3 owners interested of having the tabletui running on there tw based rom .. or not .
if anyone wonders how tw tablet ui looks you can have a look at screenshots allover the web from the newest tablet from samsung ..
of course without a device in hand its pretty hard for me to do this , not only i know i can do this but I would if i had one thats for sure .
im very happy with my note and do I do not intend on switching phone anytime soon, still under contract for 2 + years makes it pretty ridiculous for me to buy a 600 + deving phone .
So lets not get carried away here (ie trolls keep out) , all i m asking here is, is there need for this type of mod on this device ?
if so then we can start looking into how to make this work .
Sounds very interesting but I am going to get Note II soon and that will be my primary device going forward. A month+ ago when the specs for the LTE Galaxy Note II was not available, I would have been interested...
I personally have no interest in a tablet UI on my GS3 - however, I know there are surely some folks out there who would jump at the chance! What would be the advantage of a tablet UI on a 4.8" screen?
I personally don't see the need for tablet mode on the GS3. The screen is just too small to put it to good use. The Note is a different story however.
coming from a GNOte... and specially from one of ur Roms DAGr8 i would love to have a TW Tablet mode
I just started playing around with paranoid android and I do like the tablet mode for the workspace with the back and home buttons on the bottom bar with the notifications, I dont have to reach as far to hit the back button. If I could have something similar but with all the bells and whistles of touchwiz I would be in.
Dang dag about time make it happen

Any chance you could make King Kang for our device? I wanted to try to make something like it myself but wasn't sure where to start

sure all is possible... one thing at a time tho
Never was a big fan of TW on the GS2 although I must say it's much nicer on the GS3. I always end up using a different launcher anyways if I stay on a TW rom. I usually prefer PA for the tablet UI and AOKP for certain other features. Your KingKang looks pretty sweet, maybe you could bring that over?

thats good to hear; I've been worried that you abandoned AOKP for us Note owners!!
To be honest dude, ive been yearning for a tablet UI TW ROM. I've seen your ROM on the note and it's very nice.

Screen too small for tablet mode but oh boy i loved your work for the gnote 1! In 1 month your rom had endless features. Still gotta find a dev here that works at ur pace!
Came from the Note myself, and was a big fan of your work. I would live to see a tablet ui for the note.

Bump. I'm looking for this too.
EDIT:
I did a bit of researching, and I couldn't find anything. In my opinion your best option is installing a ParanoidAndroid ROM (based off CM10 or AOKP depending on which you like) and then a TouchWiz theme.
You should be able to find a ParanoidAndroid ROM in your device's thread.
Here's the link to the TouchWiz theme: http://www.mrmad.net/mrmaddon-jellywiz-edition-fur-galaxy-nexus-2208, scroll down and download the "TouchWiz Jelly Bean Addon 1.3.3" and flash in CWM.
Until someone releases REAL TouchWiz tablet UI, this is all we got.
Is use paranoidkangdroid, a mashup between aokp and paranoidandroid. And I personally love having a tablet ui. Especially apps like Gmail and YouTube are much better in tablet mode. It would be interesting to try out a tw tablet ui for this phone, as I do miss some of the touch wiz features. Like the camera and s beam. I would definitely download it if you were to make one

I would love a tablet UI for the S3, especially if I have the option of moving between phone UI (even TW) and tablet UI...that would be sweet.

Developer support?

I've read a news article on Pulse that this phone won't have much developer support due to Samsung keeping some files locked out for developer support, and that Cyanogenmod won't be developing on this phone due to that.

I don't understand the situation fully, but it sounds like Samsung has committed to releasing the source, so I am hoping that means it will get Cyanogenmod and good dev support.

This might be a dumb question, I've just begun researching this but it concerns development. I'm considering jumping from my Verizon contract to AT&T for this phone, based on the virtual certainty that the Verizon version will have a locked bootloader. Are AT&T phones locked on a case by case basis, or is it already a given that this phone will release with devs able to mess with it? I don't want to play a waiting game like the S3 on Verizon despite their huge number of users.
From my understanding there will be NO cm support on any further samsung devices..But then I seen this? so who knows...lol

i know cm10 is cool but i dont understand why people would want this on the note 2 since all the features that make the note 2 are TW related but thats just me.

Personally I agree, but this is xda and people will want to mod. I'll be rooting, but I doubt I'll flash any custom ROM's.
My order is in and I agree,
UNLESS...the many features including the S Pen etc. are ported to new ROMS I don't think I'll flash...
BTW ...anyone know of a cure for ORD

oh i will be doing the same ill flash customs roms just TW ones as i want to keep the features like spen and all that jazz.
on older devices cm was awesome cause it was fast but now as the phones are more powerful then ever i dont see a need to run them. just me tho
Same. I don't think I'll be flashing any Non-TW ROM on the Note 2. I've been flashing AOKP and CM10 on the Note 1 so I've been missing the TW S-Pen features.
This is why im glad i got the N7100 model, just sayin

Pretty much all I know is what I read on rootzwiki, but I thought that they were not going to drop all Samsung devices, but only the ones that used Exynos CPU's due to inadequate source or documentation or something. But then I think Samsung has committed to releasing this, so hopefully that means Cyanogenmod will not drop them anymore, but I haven't heard anything official.

I have to admit a lot of the features they added do seem genuinely useful, but I still think I would give them up for Cyanogenmod.
It is my understanding (from what I have read about the Note 1, etc) that android natively supports stylus input since ICS, and so it should be able to still work in Cyanogenmod. It is just that there are very few apps that really make use of it besides the ones from Samsung, Hopefully this will improve over time though.
I am with you guys, I personally will root the device and debloat it for now... But stock rom right now seems to be very nice..lol...
We will have alot of great roms coming out either way with or without cm support. I know a couple devolpers coming here shortly and there work is awesome.
There will be plenty of support. I will be working on a few things myself once I get the device. I helped start the CM development in the original note.
And the reason why we run AOSP vs all the craptastic useless stuff Samsung adds its because I personally like vanilla Google. Samsung changes to much. Android in stock form is beautiful. Just my opinion not trying to start a flame war.
If I run stock it will be stripped down deodexed and debloated likke a mofo.
If I decode to build an device tree and attempt to build CM I will. With the open support from Samsung it won't be difficult.
I know of a few developers coming this way also we will have plenty of support I'm sure

Normally I agree, and my S3 i definitely agree. But this phone is built around samsungs incorporation of the s-pen and related features. If AOKP roms ignore the s-pen, theyre useless to me.. why even get this phone then?
I think the most popular roms on this phone will be stock based, debloated and feature rich roms, much like Ariel rom for the ATT Galaxy s3 out now.

Touchwiz is hideous.
Don't get me wrong, Samsung has done some great things with the multitask and S-pen, but AOSP Jellybean makes Touchwiz look like a featurephone UI from 2003.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I will root it, but I'm going to take my time about flashing a custom ROM. I want the full functionality of that stylus as designed - as an old Palm girl, this is one of the main reasons I'm getting the Note 2. That plus the excellent GPS - coming from a woefully awful Captivate GPS. I had a Garmin iQue 3600, the Palm OS GPS unit, and am frankly spoiled by that integration. If only Garmin hadn't given up like that.....

[Q] Will the Note II get an official CM10?

Hello there peeps, I'm an X Note I user, really enjoyed the experience until my phone got broke heh! And then I bought an S3, my current phone. Im currently running CM10 on my S3, runs good, but because of the close sourcing of the Exynos processor, its still not THAT smooth as it should be. But my taste always is a bigger screen, so I want to get back a Note II. I highly DOUBT that Im ever gonna use Touchwiz....
So the question is, will the Note II get a hands on from Teamhacksung? And we'll get an official support from CM10?
Besides, Samsung has finally decided to give devs some documentation of its Exynos4 source !
Replies would be appreciated as I'm considering to buy the Note in few days, still not so sure! Hope you can help
The current CM team isn't touching any future exynos devices besides the S3 and the Tab if im correct. But if someone new want to come in and start developing for the Note 2 than it would be possible, which we already have a few members here working on CM10 for the note 2 and made some progress. CM10 in the works
Don't expect any official support for CM tho on the Note2..
Running a AOSP build just goes against everything the Note 2 was meant for

Then why did we have a CM10 support for the Note 1 ? Same idea, the whole idea about the Note was with the pen. And yet, the Note I got an official CM10. I dont care about the pen features, Im after a gorgeous 5.5 inch screen actually...and run AOSP rom on it. I can't bare touchwiz.

Those who have tried AOSP roms and figured out that it beats Samsung's Touchwiz ROMS ? Easily and clearly. Forget about the feature Sammy plug in which are awesome for intance. But when it comes to performance and UI ? The Vanilla pure Android experience is the best one out there....

because it uses a older processor than the new Note 2 and GS3 (Exynos 4210) we use Exynos 4412, the GS2 even have problems with CM and other aosp roms. (Didn't some of your roms the menu button didnt work?)
Also the US version of the Note 1 came with a snapdragon processor..
Samsung just don't want to release the right docs for the Exynos line. you can build a AOSP rom for the note 2 it just would be a a$$ to get everything fully working with out the sources you need.
Reb0rn and simone are both working on an unofficial CM10 for the note 2, and I believe Entropy said if they get it working and all their gerrit **** is OK there's no reason for it not to be made official with them as the maintainers.
I may be wrong about that last bit though, it's best to just go read that thread.
I believe cm10 is a downgrade from the stock software. Multitasking for example separates this phone from the rest. Never thought that I'll say a phone out of the box better suits my needs than cm10, aokp, or paranoid. Sorry

[Q] cyanogen mod on S4. Camera photo quality downgraded?

Well I'm gonna get straight to the point. Cyanogenmod has downgraded the camera on my Galaxy S4. Photos are significantly noisier and overall lacking in the photo department. I went to Best buy to compare a stock S4 to my CyanogenMod S4 and right there and then my worries were confirmed. Is there any way to keep cyanogen mod and get back the awesome camera quality of the stock S4? The camera downgrade is really getting on my last nerve.
It was the CyanogenMod installed through the play store BTW..
You got a few options
1) ditch CM all together, and use a GPE rom. This is AOSP built by samsung and google. It does not have any of the issues CM has.
now.. some "RDs" on this site insist that the GPE edition roms are TW based, simply because they use the same kernels - this is not true. An adroid 4.3 kernel will work on a 4.3 rom, be it touchwiz, or aosp, and same with Android 4.4
I personally run VirginROM 2.5.4 with a custom kernel that is not allowed on XDA, and my stability is 100%, battery life lasts about 2 or so day with moderate use, and audio/video (what there kernels are known for) rock. These kernels do not overclock, but excel over others that do overclock when it comes to performance.
2) compile the focal camera app yourself and deal with all the CM issues, flaws, and "hybrid" merges...
3) purchased/download a 3rd party app from the google play store

First off, no kidding. This did not need a new thread to be discussed. There are literally a thousand posts abotu camera quality with CM ROMS on the various S4 variant forums. Any search at all would have shown you the answer. Here's an example with posts from less than a week ago that explains this throughly.
Second, if this gets on your last nerve, get rid of CM and return to stock. This is the price of using CM. The camera isn't as good. Complaining about it and acting like CM owes you a better camera is downright rude to the CM team who gives you their ROM for free out of a desire to give a gift to the world. They don't owe you a thing.
The short version to your question abotu getting the CM camera back is simply no.
The long version is...
The issue with the camera in AOSP ROMS is that the stock TouchWiz camera has all kinds of proprietary software driving it. That software is built into different parts of the rom and absolutely requires the TouchWiz framework to run. (Which is also proprietary). You can't just pull the APK out of TouchWiz and install it on AOSP.
So there is no way to get the stock TW camera to run on any AOSP rom.
This means that any other app that is using the camera is using generic software to run the camera hardware. This leaves out the ability to do things that the TW software was specifically written to do like crisp auto focus and color depth and all those goodies that make the TW camera better. All that software was written specificly for the S4 hardware.
The Cyanogen camera or the Google stock camera is just an app using generic software not written specificly for this phone's camera hardware. That's no different than ANY other camera you can find on Google Play. They are ALL using generic software.
As a result, none of them are every going to be as crisp as the TouchWiz camera software. They almost all still take a really good picture with this phone, and many give various effects you might enjoy, but if you are looking the actual stock camera app that takes a higher resolution, better focused picture than the CM camera, you're not going to be able to do it.
Even with all that, the S4 camera hardware with CM camera software It's still better than most other phones on the market.
At the end of the day, it's not a camera that makes phone calls. It's a phone that has a camera in it. If photography is that big of a deal to you, you're never going to be happy with anything other than a true SLR. There's nothing wrong with that, mind you. But please stop complaining about the quality of the free ROM that har dworking developers put together in their spare time and gave to you as a gift with no questions or strings atatched.
Well Said !!
I appreciate the way you explained. :good:

[Q] Changing carries

Hi everyone I have a note 2 with sprint looking to jump to t mobile. All the asop and cm roms have low sound when you are in a call even the speaker is very low I am not a dev and know one can seem to fix the problem, I am not complaining just I like asop and cm roms and I have big beefy hands and I prefer the large screens of Samsung's note series. I hate TW and always root my phones but I always find my self going back to TW on my note 2. Now to the question how is the sound and I guess since I am asking the question how is the over all performance of the note 3 running cm or asop ? Now I know running a different software on a device is not going to be perfect but I would at-least be able to hear comfortably with the phone to my ear or the device being on speaker. And I thank anyone for taking the time to indulge me by answering this question. And if I have offended anyone I apologize. The reason for question is I don't own the device thanks in advance.
Any body
