Worst case of nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Accessories

It's "Spigen ultra thin air"
I just think this case is light and pretty, but after using it for the past 4 months.
I have scratches 10 thread around the edges and corners on all sides, including the back cover too.
My device never slip, fall or affected. All scratches are caused by just putting the case in - out.
Do not buy!, the advantage is that pretty only.
Sorry for my english skill and I don't have camera to take the scratches photo.

There's also multiple posts about these types of cases and this one in particular.

For me it was the Caseology LG Google Nexus 5 Carbon Fiber Hybrid TPU Armor Case Cover, is really nice and huge, the problem is when taking a picture, the photos with flash come out blurry, since the cover is so close to the flash, it reflects on the body of the cover and the pictures come out really bad. I stopped using it since every time I wanted a night picture I had to take the cover off. Ever since I have been using the "Soft TPU Bumper Frame + Clear Crystal Back Case Cover (ebay)" and the "Hybrid Bumper Case Cover Frame (ebay)". The caseology is a great protection cover, but for me, is like a great car with a bad performance.

Stop taking it off and on.
I don't see the problem. The case is to stop the phone breaking when you drop it.

Slim cases provide no drop protection at all. Ironically enough they're only good to protect against scratches.

Spigen slim armor is awesome! Been using for the past 3 months. NO COMPLAINTS!

I've the spiegen "light armour" and it's protected my phone 100%
These cases are meant to be kept on. I've never taken it off and would imagine if I did a few times it may damage as it's a tight fit, which is why fit and leave!

The Nexus 5 is pretty easy to break, I couldn't believe the video.
We need to protect our phones really well and I need suggestions for a decent yet appealing case.
Thanks
Well i ordered two cases when i got mine and they seem pretty good from all the feed back i've seen on here
SPIGEN Google Nexus 5 Case ULTRA HYBRID
and this
SPIGEN Google Nexus 5 Case Slim Armor
But that drop test made me cry i tiny bit

Holy crap i dont think ive ever seen screen breakage this bad
Easy to break? It fairs pretty well in side drops, no? Any glass will break if it directly hits the ground; raised lips helps to prevent this scenario.
A simple TPU case with raised lips should do the job.
Alternatively you can grab some skins to cover the phone to prevent dents, and use glass or anti-shatter screen protectors.

I never expected this, even after the numerous complaints about the nexus 4 being very fragile...
I guess we should add one of those rhino shield or similar screen protectors to our phones ASAP.
Yeah, sorry about the title, the screen protector is more important in this case
Waiting for a lifeproof imitation....
That made me cringe. Glad I have a case.

it survived 3 drops at 5 ft. 2 drops that landed on the same bottom side. glass vs cement will always result in the same way. seeing how everything still functions after the glass being shattered that badly is actually more surprising.
Got my Nexus 5 on Monday, but case wont arrive until next week.
Left it in a drawer and, after this video, thats where it will stay.

I beg to differ. I dropped my S2 with no cover or screen protector so many times on it's face, sides, back and all 4 corners. It fell so bad that the corners actually warped over the glass and are all indented.
Screen... Spotless. Very tiny scratches here and there, but after 2 years I am amazed at the quality of the gorilla glass on that phone.

I'm not sure whether it's the bigger screens or that the newer gorilla glass generations are weaker, but screens are definitely more breakable these days.
In the three years I've had it I've beaten the **** out of my Sensation, but the screen is still flawless.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate at the moment and have dropped it numerous times on its front, side and back... Aside from some scuffs on the case, there's really nothing else wrong with it.
..Which leads me to believe that older android phones probably don't actually use glass as their screens. I think my Cappy's screen is probably plastic. It definitely can't be glass, considering how many times I've dropped it.
Oh no it's definitely glass - trust me on that one
I fumbled it mid air and inadvertently threw it to the ground (carpet) and it popped out a nice glass shard.
It's the raised edges that save it. I dropped it so many times too, but the slightly raised edges take all the force. I'm totally getting a case - just ordered a cheapy on eBay to hold out until I get something that shows off the phone better
i just started a thread for the case i'm gonna get for my n5. if you're paranoid about drops, this is the case for you.

so tough to watch....does anyone know what happens to the phone after he tests them? obviously something like that is just going to get returned or sold. and it would be a shame if he just wasted a N5 on a test like that..
My n5 I've already dropped 3 times from at least 4 foot. First one in the bathroom landed screen down on the tiles. I [email protected] myself. Not a mark
Second time in the kitchen again to tiles landed but I tried to catch with my foot and ended up kicking it on the bounce into the cupboard about 1.5meters away from where I was. Still no scratch
And third time in the garage I was using it as a torch dropped it straight to concrete didn't see what side it landed but haven't got a single scratch on it!
I'm shocked as hell
My ultra hybrid case really needs to be delivered asap the way im going.

Don't use hard cases

I dropped my Nexus 5 cased in a spigen ultra fit on its corner. The corner of the phone got roughed up when I took off the case to check. Hard cases don't absorb well in my opinion.

You can't expect a plastic sleeve to offer any protection.
If you want it safe from drops, IMO, you need dual layer protection.
That's why I went with a Neo Hybrid, too. Plus, it looks awesome (especially the champagne one).

[Guide] Headphone/Earphone Buying
Neo Hybrid is nice but makes the phone way too bulky for my liking on one-hand usage.
Then your only option are cases that do not protect well from drops. It's a compromise we all make, though I'd hardly call the neo hybrid bulky.
There are a thousand cases for a thousand different preferences. I just don't think anyone should delude themselves by thinking a plastic sleeve can save a phone from a good drop.

I agree with OP. I also own a Spigen Ultra Fit which has left noticeable scratch marks on the corner of my phone and I have never dropped it! Seems like this is a common problem with the Ultra Fit.
It depends on what you're willing to sacrifice. I'd rather have some protection and slim phone then full and bulky device

As a materials engineer, there are two things to consider:
- Hard materials are good for wear or scratch resistance, but they don't use to have a good resilience or fracture toughness: they don't absorb energy, so are not a good choice for impact resistance applications.
- In the other hand, soft materials as foams or silicon/tpu are not good for scratch or wear or impact with a sharp tool (this is what hardness really means), but they are very good absorving energy and have a high fracture toughness.
So when chosing your case you have to take into account your personal situation: do you usually drop your phone? Or are you more worried about scratching it with keys or coins?
And that's why composite materials should appear also in this field, to combine a shock absorber in the inner part of the case and a harder coating on the outer to protect against scratches.
I don't trust this "anti-shock" cases which are extremely rigid and slim.
^awesome post. Now I wish I knew that before all of this happened

That's the problem with the Ultra fit case, it grips so tight that every time you pry off the case it will scuff the phones matte finish in the corners. I didn't like this and stopped using it in favor of the softer and more protective Diztronic TPU case which is slightly bulkier but hey, one of life's many little compromises and one Im ok with.

This is like saying you never get sick because you take a vitamin every day. There's no way of knowing if it was the case that prevented the screen from fracturing without doing several drop tests in a controlled way. It could have easily been the angle of the fall, distance, or floor surface that saved the screen.
Hard plastic doesn't absorb the shock at all really because it's not flexible. This is why the higher end cases like the spigen neo hybrid have a dual layer protection of TPU.

Found my case finally - very minimalist

Let me state it 1st, I like my N5 naked. It really feels good in my hand, but the hard reality of the world is I will drop it, again. 1st time I was sitting on a chair and put the phone on my leg and I said to myself, take it off your leg because when you stand it it will fly off. And boys and girls what did I proceed to do? You guessed it, I stood up and the phone hit the concrete floor on the right corner and kind of popped open. I squeezed it shut and no harm. Anyway, after that I had been looking for a case and bought I think 3 others. They were all thin and 2 with the clear backs and 1 without, but they all added too much bulk and worst of all for me was the fact when I actually used the phone, something sharp would rub my ear and drive me crazy.
So, I had the following criteria; minimal, no top and bottom covering and had to raise the phone up slightly when I put it down on its face.
Well, the new release Ringke Slim going for around $7.99 is perfect for me. I covers the corners so if I dropped it I feel it would absorb the blow. It's raised just a little so when I lay it down it is off the surface. It has no top and bottom so does not hurt my ear and its cheap! I would of paid pretty much anything for a really good case, but I found it for cheap. I still have to put my glas screen protector on, like I say I really like it naked, and with that on it should be pretty safe.
I can't really see anything being thinner, except maybe just a bumper, but I have not seen one I like. I will be leaving the Slim on my phone.
It's a great case for those of us who like a more professional look with a minimalist form factor and the feel of the naked N5 back with an added grip factor. I'm with you
There is a similar case that's cheaper and believe it or not thinner, albeit minor. Bear Motion. I have 2 and while they are slightly thinner and have very smooth edges unlike the stock rearth slim, they are very slippery in the hand. Too slippery for me.
NX5
The spigen ultra fit and ringke slim are both good minimal cases. You can't go wrong with either.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the additional case suggestions, I'm going to investigate the Bear Motion. I could not imagine slimmer but the slippery factor may be an issue. The slim is not as nice, to me, as the naked back, but not bad in terms of grip.

Yeah when it is new you are correct. How long have you had it? Reason I ask is because after your finger/hand oils get on the case it then becomes very grippy like rubber. At least that has be my experience.
I'd also imagine it can be dependent on where you live and the weather. If it's cold and dry this case could have a little slip to it.
NX5
The Ringke Slim is a terrible case. It scratches the device, sharp corners all over it. Do not recommend it unless you want to scratch your phone.

Yes ultra fit is too tight that it scratches the phones corner
I'm not quite sure it would protect your phone from a drop. There was a post on here not to long ago with a cracked nexus 5. In the picture it was wearing the spigen ultra slim which is very similar to the ringke. The glass screen was cracked at the bottom where it took full force of the fall because there was no protection there.

It's the best case I've used so far. Highly recommended if you want a case that doesn't take away from the look and feel of the N5. I've taken the case off and on over a dozen times and I have no scratches at all on my phone corners. As for the sharp corners of the case, about 30 seconds with a nail file takes care of it

Sure it does. It depends on many factors. How high it drops from, how it lands, what it lands on, etc....
This is a minimalist case with form factor, scratch resistance, and looks as the priority. Not drop protection. If one wants strong drop protection then this case is NOT the one to buy. One should then purchase a thicker bulkier 2 or 3 piece "fat case" like an otter box or similar.

Not everyone has the scratch problem like you guys have had. I have a Ringke Slim and have never had it damage my phone, and I quite like the case. I also switch between different hardcases often and there are no scrapes in sight.
Also, it's unfortunate dice that you damaged your phone from your drop with a hardcase case on it. But don't criticize a person for recommending one because his good experience differed from yours.
It seems you've got some personal vendetta and drive to go into every hardcase thread and badmouth them.

Are you using a White or a Black Nexus? I have a feeling that the sides of my white one will end up getting damaged over time with this case, just because that's how glossy stuff is... Regardless, thanks for mentioning the case and it's nice to hear that the interior is matte. I just wish that there was a case similar to the 360 Spigen case that covers the top and bottom as well, and is matte on the inside.
But for now, i guess the Ringke will do.

I do have the black N5 and the black case, on the black phone you almost have to take a 2nd look to see it has a case. I do like the way on a white case the white would show on the top and bottom. You may be right but, the rubbing of just the day to day may be enough to wear it down. Well good luck in finding a case and let us know what you decide on.

I think I'll have to just settle for this one, as every time a company creates a minimal case such as this (like Incipio's feather line), they will always leave the top and bottom exposed.
I'm slightly concerned regarding the buttons being exposed, but I'm sure that since Google has a rev. 2 variant with better buttons, any issues I come across during the warranty period will be addressed.
I remember with my HTC EVO I had left that it in a Seidio Surface case which wrapped around all sides and it still got dents/scuffs/scratches just sitting in the case because of small bits of dirt or something would slip in. Oh well, such is life

[Screen Protector] SPIGEN GLAStR Nano Slim Tempered Glass

Hi guys,
I just installed the Spigen GLAStR Nano Slim Tempered Glass Protector. I bought it off Amazon and it came pretty quick despite the holidays. I've attached pictures of the glass on my Nexus 5. Sorry I didn't get pictures of the installation process. I didn't want to risk getting dust underneath, so I had to do it quick.
I used the "Hinge Method" to put the screen on. And as you can see I got slight bubbles at the bottom (circled in red), so the installation wasn't perfect. I also have 1 tiny micro bubble in the middle...it's hardly noticeable even with the screen off/on and is probably less than .5mm in diameter. I would still suggest using this method for any screen protector installation.
After about 30 minutes, I used a micofiber cloth-covered squeegee to push out those bubbles that were circled...and they're gone! I just have that tiny ass one in the middle.
Overall it feels great, and its definitely smooth with the oleophobic coating...I haven't put my Cruzerlite case on yet, gonna give it some time for the glass' adhesive to settle in. I will comment on that soon!
Any questions? Feel free to hit me up!
Best,
K

Tempered Glass w/ Cruzerlite Case On
Hi all,
Just an update here. I let the glass sit overnight and all the bubbles were gone..even that micro bubble in the middle of the screen. This morning, I slapped on my Cruzerlite TPU case, to see if there was any peeling of the glass, or any fit issues.
Initially, it seemed everything was fine. However, after I got to work, I noticed that in the left bottom corner, the case began to push the glass up a little, especially if I pushed on that edge. As such, I decided to remove the case to prevent any more issues.
Spigen's GLAStR screen protector seems like a good one, but I think if they increased the edges 1mm in each direction, the Cruzerlite case would sit on top and sort of seal the glass rather than hit edge-to-edge like in this case, causing the glass to begin peeling. I've attached pictures to show what it looks like with the case on.
Let me know if you have any questions!
K

Sure. The Hinge method is where you take the screen protector and tape it to the phone BEFORE you peel the protective film away.
1) Align the screen protector to exactly where you want it
2) Tape one side of the protector so that you can swing it open like a door (tape in two places..I put a piece near the power button and one a little further down
3) Open up the "door" that you just made and clean your naked screen so there is no lint, dust, hair etc.
5) Make sure the protector aligns just as you want it
4) Then peel the "backside" of the film off so that the adhesive side is exposed and "close the door" so the protector is on the phone
5) Immediately take a squeege and cover it in a micofiber cloth and push out any bubbles you may have
6) Peel away the front of the screen protector
7) Using the squeegee that's inside the cloth (VERY IMPORTANT so you don't scratch the glass), push out any remaining bubbles
8) DONE! ENJOY!
Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt9_fZDT-As

Nice review and a +1 for the hinge method. Only way to install a 'dry' screen protector for me!
Just received mine today. Install went great except I noticed an air bubble on the left side about halfway down, right on the edge. Well, when I took a closer look, it was actually a chip in the glass.
Contacted Spigen Support and I am waiting for a response. Hopefully they can help me out.

That sucks! I hope they are responsive. Did you go with the hinge method as well during installation? I noticed that my glass is slightly off to the right.. Didn't get it perfect.. Oh well.

I didn't go for the hinge method. But I have used it in the past and it works pretty well.
The chip is pretty small so its not interfering with anything on the screen, as long as it doesn't get worse.
Spigen sent me an email back with a case number and said I should be contacted within 1-3 business days. Hoping for the best!

Saved my phone!
Im not 100% sure HOW it saved my phone, but im sold on them and will be buying a replacement!
my son likes to hide my phone, last night he hid my phone under my recliner (which hits the floor when rocking) and as i was rocking away i heard CRACK / CRUNCH....looked under the chair to find my phone with two very prominent pressure cracks on the screen...
i thought NO WAY was this ONLY the Nano.TR....as i pulled up the corners, the glasses started breaking and falling apart, but low and behold, not a single scratch or dent on my phones screen!
Completely blown away that my phone's screen didn't crack under the pressure.....sold on them forever!

So because of the chip in the edge of the protector it ended up just cracking across the screen.
I can't feel the crack but you can see it.
No email back from Spigen yet. Buy I did update them on the hairline crack across.
Still hoping for the best.

It's the first time I try a glass screen protector, this one is very wonderful. There is only a micro-chip somewhere, but I can't see it in normal conditions, I have to examine my screen closely for like one minute to spot it.
Putting it on the screen was very easy, much easier than plastic screen protectors.
It fits nicely with official Google bumper case.
Without a case?
Hey guys, I personally want to buy this Spigen protector (.tr version) because I hate cases on my mobile phone. I'm not going to waste €36 (yes, its the Netherlands) if I also have to apply a case on it. So is this screenprotector drop-proof? If I drop this phone from 1 meter from the surface, would it be able to save the ORIGINAL glass?
Thanks,
Viresh

They recommend a case with this product because they say the protector would crack easily without any case over time.

What do you mean by "over time", considering my usage, I have only dropped my old phone (SGS+) once in the two years of intensive usage. As SGS+ is a smart strong boy, it doesn't break, not even a scratch. Would the Glas.tR, 0.4 mm, survive a 1 meter downfall? Thanks in advance yo

Well, sorry but I have no idea. It's only written that they strongly recommend using a case along with the glass.

It depends on how it falls obviously, but I'd say chances are pretty good that the glass screen protector would be cracked or chipped after a fall, especially onto a hard surface like concrete. I have the GLAS.t on my N5 and like you I prefer no case and am very careful with my phone. But even just casual daily use, the screen protector has chipped, and it's been the case with several others too (spanning a variety of different brands as well).
So I would proceed with caution and really consider if it's worth sinking the money into. That being said, if the screen protector chips or cracks after a fall, it's taking damage that would otherwise be applied to your phone, which is its purpose to begin with.

So, a fall from 1 meter above on a hard surface, with the glass .tR 0.4mm applied, straight on its front would prevent the ORIGINAL Nexus 5 glass from cracking? (i know the spigen **** will crack)

There's no reason to expect any screen protector would save a phone from a drop. Screen protectors are meant for preventing the glass from being scratched. If the drop is sufficient to damage the screen, I strongly feel it would damage the screen through a 0.4mm sheet of glass overlaying your screen.
Cases, however, are what you use to protect phones from drops.

Be careful using case's on the note 4

I've have all ways used case's and screen protector to protect the value of my phone, because when I'm on to the next thing i see my phone to supplement the cost of a new one.the note 4 chamfered edges do not like cases, all around the edges is scuff marks if you have a case on take it off and have a look for your self
i agree. I had a condom case on my phone from spigen for about 2 weeks and now it has very small scratches around the edges. The plastic bezel didnt scratch this easily.
that's why I stay naked since the galaxy note2, though I dont have any history of being clumsy or something to scratch my toy
Using the sup case which is a 2 piece, hard inner, soft outer case. Not one scratch yet. I believe the scratches are from cases that allow slight play within causing dirt to get inside and the phone to rub it in.

I use the Pelican Pro Voyager case on mine, there are no scratches or issues even after dropping a few times.

I also have the Pelican Pro case and was concerned that it might crack open if it lands on one of the corners.
Got a UAG case yesterday and read that some users reported scratches on the bezel. I'm sure it's because the case is so snug. I have a hard time taking it off... lol

From my experice, any case that has a hard inner will eventually scratch the sides. Soft inners are less prone.
