Recovery - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys I want to change my recovery from cwm to twrp. Twrp manager shows my device as unsupported. Can it be safely flashed with Odin over top cwm without Uninstaller it?
Sent from my unknown using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I'm sure someone will say this is terrible for some reason but I found out yesterday the flashing root has menus built in to flash twrp, chem and Philz and all three worked for me that way.

Double-check (err, triple-check) your phone model before going the ODIN way, and make sure you grab the correct ODIN-compatible tar file.
I don't think there is an "uninstall" method for a recovery. To change your recovery, you simply overwrite it with another one. The official TWRP website shows three different methods (installing using Goo Manager [recommanded], overwrite the recovery partition using an IMG file, and flashing using ODIN) to achieve TWRP's installation into your device. Please take a look at the project's website for more info.

I'm stuck. I can't get root back after update to 4.3 - Tried everything

Right guys, usually I'm quite good a figuring these things out myself but this one has me stuck. I've tried loads of suggestions and I'm sure I'm doing something wrong somewhere.
Basically I've just flashed SlimBean, the Android 4.3 version. When I opened SU it says that there is no SU binary installed and that it can't install them. I researched that error message and I have tried the following.
Re-Root using Odin and CF Autroot. The process worked but I still don't have root access. (I checked that I have root enabled in the developer options)
I read that I need to flash SU v1.51 but I now don't have a custom recovery so can't flash the ZIP. I tried using ROM manager which won't work because I don't have Root access.
I decided that I need to flash a custom recovery so I downloaded one from TeamWin (the TAR/MD5 version for Odin) and tried to flash it with Odin. Unfortunately Odin detects my phone, starts file analysis, then crashes. I decided to try flashing it using Goo Manager. This said that it had worked but when I rebooted I still get the stock Android recovery
I tried to flash a CWM recovery using Odin but again it crashes. I was using Odin v3.07 but I downloaded v3.09 and it still doesn't work.
So I HAVE done some searching and tried to resolve myself but I'm stuck now. I could be missing something simple. Any ideas people?
Settings > Developer Options > Root Access then select Apps and ADB. If you can't see developer options go to about phone and tap 6x version number.

Yes mate. That's what I meant in my original post when I said that I'd enabled root.
Thanks for trying to help though, I appreciate it.

Have you tried framaroot? Not sure if it supports Note 2 but it doesn't require custom recovery afaik

Never heard of that to be honest. I'll have a bit of a search and see if it will work for the Note 2.
Thanks.

Problem solved. I didn't directly use Framaroot but when searching for it I stumbled across Philz Touch Recovery which actually did flash with Odin (strange why CWM or TWRP wouldn't work with Odin) so you did help indirectly
From there I flashed DrKetan_MultiTool-AromaVxx.zip and got my Root back.
Thanks

I use Philz too but didn't tell you as I though there was a whole problem with custom recoveries in general :$
Glad you sorted it out though

Can you tell me how you did it? I'm fairly new and don't want to brick my phone....again.
I keep having the same trouble with root access as you described and want to give Philz a try.
Thank you bunches!
Irene
One thing I have noticed myself, that unless you are Running Probam which has Super SU as it's native Root, then you will encounter this problem. Installing SuperSu on many 4.3 Roms will break root, from what I have read and tested. Use the built in superuser instead. But it is good to know that Philz works.
So until SuperSu is updated, don't use it.

Download Philz touch Recovery and the SuperSu and Busybox flash file. Place the SuperSu/Busybox flash file onto your phone internal or external memory card. Then open up Odin and select Philz file in the PDA section. Put your phone into download mode by holding Power, Volume Down, Home, you will see the menu asking you to go into download mode. Choose yes. Connect your phone and a yellow or blue box will show up in Odin to let you know it's connected.
Leave the boxes with tickmarks and what not. Then click Start and it will flash. It should reboot your phone.
When rebooted turn off phone. Then Hold Power, Volume up and Home button to boot into Philz recovery choose install zip file and navigate to the SuperSu/Busybox file and choose it to flash. Flash file. Optional but always a good idea, wipe cache/dalvik cache after then reboot phone.

Is having 2 Custom Recoverys bad?

After achieving S-Off, thanx to Romrunners method, I flashed CWM Recovery cause I prefer over TWRP. Just wanted to know if I should be concerned in having 2 recoverys installed, and how to delete the other.

OK so first off you can't have 2 recoveries. Also it is called rumrunner. ROM manager is not support for this phone. And Twrp is better. Lol

That's ROM Manager's somewhat backwards way of asking you what to do about its recovery image.
The options, from top to bottom, are "Install CWM", "I have already installed CWM", and "I have already installed TWRP."
If you choose the one that applies to you, it will stop bothering you.
ROM Manager works fine, btw - once you've convinced it that you have CWM-m7vzw installed (it can even install it itself(!)) you can back up and restore and flash ROMs 'til your heart's content–even CM10.2 nightly updates.
I have a similar question, I have cwm on my htc and want to go over to twrp. What's the best way to remove cwm?

You do not need to remove cwm, all you need to do is put the twrp.img file in your adb/fastboot folder, boot to the bootloader, select fastboot usb - sometimes it loads automatically to this -, type fastboot devices to confirm your device then type "fastboot flash recovery twrp_filename.img" - type that without the quotes and the actual filename with .img. Once you enter that and hit enter you should get some text saying it is being sent to your phone and it should tell you if it worked or failed.
Thanks I appreciate the help..

Guess I need to try and install twrp again. Some folks over in the omni room forum are saying that the latest cwm is what's causing baseband issues when flashing roms (no service)

[Q] Nexus 7 Newb would like feedback on plan for setting up my device

I recently picked up a Nexus 7, unlocked it, and loaded KitKat yesterday with the factory image. I have set the device up now and would like to use a custom backup to take an image of the 7 and then store that image off of the device on an external drive since I only have a 16gb 7.
I have downloaded Clockworkmod ROM Manager to do this. Is it easily feasible to make a stock image and then transfer the image to an external drive? I'm having an issue installing the Clockworkmod Recovery tool, but I posted a question about that in a different forum.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick
I presume you have a custom recovery installed in addition to the ClockWorkMod Manager? If not, use the WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit to install that, then boot into the recovery and select the backup option. It will create a folder on the root of your device called clockworkmod which will contain your backups. Just copy that to your PC, and transfer it back to the device when you need it.

I've used ROM Manager a fair amount for creating backups. It works well, but like was said previously, you'll need to flash a custom recovery. The two main choices are Clockworkmod (CWM) and Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). CWM works well with ROM Manager in my experience on another device.
I've found TWRP much easier to use though. It features a touch interface. You'll be able to customize the backup file name if you initiate a backup in recovery mode. The file name will also allow spaces, while CWM doesn't.
Check it out at teamw.in/project/twrp2. I think the recoveries are the same, but make sure you select the correct Nexus 7 model (LTE or Wi-Fi). You can flash the image in the bootloader using fastboot. Instructions are avalaible on the TWRP website.

I don't think TWRP is working with 4.4 build number KRT16S
Can anyone confirm? I just tried to flash the latest TWRP recovery 2.6.3.1 and it was not working when I rebooted into recovery. I was still getting the stock image.

Just backed up stock KitKat to a thumb drive and flashed newest 4.4 Omni Rom from thumb Drive. Use the WugFresh Nexus Toolkit to flash recovery. It makes it much simpler.

From what I've read, the stock recovery for KRT16S is the same as KRT16O. I'm running the latest TWRP on KRT16O without issue.
Assuming your bootloader is unlocked, you shouldn't have an issue. Can you list the steps you're using to flash recovery? Maybe you're missing something.
If you have the correct driver on your computer and you're using fastboot, the command should be "fastboot flash recovery [insert recovery file name].img" from the fastboot directory.

Ok, maybe I was doing something wrong. The command line indicated it was installing correctly when I flashed it. However, when I rebooted to recovery it was never TWRP.
I just installed Clockworkmod Recovery so it was probably an error on my end.
Now, since I have made a backup, how can I identify where it is stored? I would like to move it to my computer since I only have a 16gb 7.
Thanks for all the replies,
Rick
I can't remember the default location. I think it's sdcard/clockworkmod/backups.
If you remember the file name, you can just search for that using ES File Explorer or a similar app.

great, thanks for all the help. I will probably reflash back to stock and then rebuild my device and backup. I have OCD about making sure I've got the cleanest install and right now don't know that for sure since it's been trial and error.
They are saved in /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup
They are hidden from other apps, so you need a file explorer with root to move them.
Great, thank you for the reply. The help from folks on the forum has been fantastic and really helps a newb.

CWM Help!

I'm rooted on stock 4.1 but i didn't have a custom recovery so I flashed cwm rom manager. I was able to make a nandroid backup fine but when I tried rebooting in to the recovery, it would just take me to stock recovery. How do I fix this? Thanks, in advance!

For some phones, it seems Rom manager doesn't flash the recovery properly. Just like Goomanager, for me, will not flash TWRP at all. I prefer to flash it using MSkips Toolbox or ODIN by itself if you know how. If you use the toolbox, it will be an older version of CWM, but after you flash the older version and make sure it works by rebooting your phone into recovery, then you can flash the newest version of either CWM or TWRP in ZIP format HERE. ODIN can be tricky for some who've never used it before. The Toolbox automates this process for you.

If you prefer CWM, give Philz Touch a try, it is a very advanced version of CWM, and works great for a lot of users, myself included. There are flashable .zip files for Philz and CWM, if you install both on your SD card there is no harm in switching to Philz in order to check it out, you can then easily flash back to CWM if you want.

P.S. Knowing how to use Odin is a valuable skill, nothing wrong with having an app perform a task like installing a custom recovery as long as you also know the more "nuts and bolts" approach.

Can someone give me the link to go from 4.3.1 to 4.4??

I'm running Dirty Unicorn 4.3.1 and MK4 and want to root to 4.4 kit kat and load some new roms.
I have tried just wiping and flashing, but I get no data unless i'm on wifi.
Is there a step by step to get the update?? I also read about some knox crap also. Don't know what that is.
Please advise.......
Thanks in advance

Well if you read most of the 4.4 rom threads you will see you need to use cwm recovery or philz recovery. Since you are using twrp you wont get data to work without going through a few hoops.

I did download rom manager and Philz. I just wasn't sure how to get them to override TWRP. Do I just flash Philz??
Thanks so much for chiming in. I've been rooted for several years, but this update flew right by me.
Keep talking......
Yeah just flash it through ROM manager then reboot into recovery. If it is not philz recovery (although it should be) then you can just flash it in recovery.

I downloaded rom manager, but it doesn't seem to override TWRP. I also tried to flash Philz (which I preferred), but I could only try to flash it with TWRP, and of course, it failed.
Do I need to freeze TWRP in Titanium backup ???
Please re-download Philz and verify md5 then flash in twrp. After flashing in twrp reboot the recovery within twrp and boom! you have Philz!

Like you, I could not get TWRP to leave my device (no matter what I tried). Only thing that finally worked was this flasher utility to get CWM:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools
Granted I didn't try to Odin PhilZ or CWM but that was about the only thing left I hadn't tried.
I had twrp for a recovery. When I installed DU 4.4.2, I downloaded cwm 6.0.4.3 because I guess twrp and 4.4 roms don't play nice. I actually downloaded the cwm recovery, saved it on my external sd, and booted into twrp recovery, flashed the recovery file for cwm, and it rebooted. I boot back into recovery with cwm on board, and then downloaded whatever 4.4 roms and gapps package that was necessary. It works fine for me.
