Hi everyone,
I'm using a HTC Wildfire and am considering changing from stock (HTC non-branded) to CyanogenMod for a number of minor reasons. Could anyone just confirm that I got a few points right before I get started:
- Recovery is totally independent from the ROM itself, right? So I can flash ClockWorkMod Recovery only, continue to use the stock ROM, but have the additional features of ClockWorkMod available, such as backup, with which I can create a complete backup of the stock ROM. In case I don't like CyanogenMod, I can restore the stock image and be exactly where I left it, Apps, Settings and everything (of course the new Recovery will still be installed.) Is this correct?
- I'm planning to do the following steps (I read about the details, just want to confirm the basics):
x use the Revolutionary way to S-OFF and install new Recovery
x create full image backup of the stock ROM using the new Recovery
x install new ROM (ClockWorkMod)
x if I don't like CM: restore image created before to return to stock
-> This should work, shouldn't it?
- One more: What will happen if the the phone is S-OFF, an alternative Recovery is installed, and a HTC Firmware-Update is attempted? Will this work at all, will it update just the ROM, or will it update the Recovery, too? S-OFF will not be changed back to S-ON, right?

1. Yes, the recovery is in it's own partition and is independent from the ROM
2. The recovery creates a "snapshot" of your current ROM. So when you restore, it'll be just the way you left it.
3. There's no need to do any HTC Firmware updates after installing a custom ROM (infact, I'm almost 100% sure that it won't work)
As a basic answer yes you go ahead with what you posted.just make sure your hboot version is compatible with revolutionary 1st etc etc.
As for HTC firmware update question,if your talking about the over the air updates I'm not sure but I think it would update your hboot thus reverting back to s-on status again so best not accept it if you do get one (turn off in settings)

No, the manual ones you can download directly from HTC and install via USB. My understanding was that this would kill everything flashable, including radio and recovery. It would be reassuring to have a worst-case way to go back to stock in case the image-restore fails for whatever reason.

Ah sorry never dealt with any firmware updates. There are ruu.exe to help get back to stock if something goes wrong I think.

You can go completely back to stock, s-on and all but believe me once you have cwm installed there really is no point unless its for warranty reasons, backup fails are rare with the latest recoveries + if it does fail with your first backup you can always post here and we will explain how to extract a stock Rom from an ruu to put things back to how they where before or you can flash a custom sense Rom and modify it to your liking.

Ok, I'm on my way now. I've performed the "Revolutionary" S-OFF and am now running "Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4". Is this an out-of-date version?
I've read about ROM-Manager being able to auto-check for and flash a new Clockworks Recovery, but I've also read that ROM-Manager needs root. I have not yet flashed a new ROM, so I assume that I'm not yet rooted, am I? Can I find a ZIP of CWM that I can directly flash from the SD-card?
Does the CWM-version I'm running have any effect on the "quality" of the image backup? In other words, if I create a backup now, will I be able to restore it later running a different version of CWM?
The "different version backup restore" is a bit wonky and won't always work.
To flash a different recovery from the SD card do this:
1. Place this file on your SD card (Not in any folders!): http://www.multiupload.com/74EW2VPNHL
2. Boot into the bootloader
3. Wait a bit and then it should prompt you to update
4. Click the volume+ key to update
5. Remove SD card
6. Boot into the new recovery and insert the SD card
7. Go under mounts and select Mount USB storage
8. Delete the PCIMG file from your computer

I tried to, but I couldn't use the link. The whole domain seems to be down - maybe another holy crusade of Big Content, who knows. They sure leave fans in their wake, don't they.
Since you indicated that updating would be ok for the wildfire I went to http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager and downloaded the file recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-buzz.zip.
However, I'm not sure how to handle it: If I put it on the card under this name, nothing happens on bootloader-start. In recovery, I can select the file and install it, and then I immidiatly get a newly colored menu with the new CWM version 5.something. However, once I restart, the old CWM (v4.x) is there again.
I assume I need to use a magic filename so that the bootloader performs the update, not the (already running) recovery. Right?
**EDIT: Ah, disregard. I believe I found the answer myself.
Do you have fastboot?
If you do I can give you the recovery.img I'm using, which you can flash via fastboot.

Okay, here's how you flash a recovery via fastboot.
1. Extract the .zip I attached to the location where you fastboot is
2. Reboot phone in the bootloader
3. Select fastboot and attach USB cable
4. Open up the command prompt and type in "cd [location of fastboot]
5. Type in "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
6. You're done
Oh and by [location of fastboot] I mean that you type in the location of fastboot.
Wow - this was fun. There was something really curious going on with my device: Whatever I tried, no "official" way worked to modify CWM v4 to v5. In every case, the menu of the new version showed up and was usable, but was gone again after restart. After the file-on-card method got me nowhere (file was not recognized), I tried the high road and installed ROM-Manager. This complained about missing su. So I installed su. After that ROM-Manager downloaded CWM v5 and put it onto the card (into a file named update.zip - ahh... ) On restart, the CWM-install-screen came up, then the v5 menu.
And after restart, it was gone again. Even ROM-Manager was confused: He showed v5 as "installed", when in fact it was still v4. ;-)
So finally I downloaded the Android SDK (to get fastboot.exe) and performed the flash as you suggested in the first place. And it worked. First try, without hitch, permanently.

The problem with ROM Manager's version is that it's only temporary and can only be accessed from the ROM Manager itself
I have an HTC Explorer and have installed CM 9 easily. Unlock bootloader through HTC , install custom CWM recovery using fastboot, then install CM 9 zip from sd card using CWM recovery. I have tried to do the same with my daughter's Wildfire. I get as far as installing a CWM recovery but it hangs at a "hat" icon when I try to use it. I have tried several CWM img files, including the one in the "cm49?" zip. None work. Is there a way for me to get a CWM recovery working? I don't want to go through all the s-off process, I don't think it is needed. My Explorer works great with s-on. I hope someone can help. I promised my daughter I would get ICS on her phone as her Christmas present.

If I'm not mistaken you have to flash the boot.img manually with S-ON so I think a S-Off'd device is much better and it isn't that hard to S-Off it. I don't know if the S-Off methods still work if you unlocked it before but they should.
Besides you haven't taken the CWM from Pico/Explorer and tried to install it on the Wildfire, have you?

Thanks for your reply. All the cwm img files I have used have come from this forum. I had high hopes for the one I extracted from "pc49img.zip" as it seemed to say it might work on another post. It installed like the other but doesn't work.

I got a question are you just unlocked or already rooted on the WF? I think you can't install CWM if you're not rooted. That would be nice to know. Otherwise you can may follow this guide

Just unlocked after following the procedure on "htcdev.com". With my Explorer you can root the phone with the aid of the CWM recovery you install after unlocking it. Maybe the CWM recoveries for Wildfire assume your phone is already rooted, but I don't know how to root it without having a working CWM recovery first.

Yeah you're right. I think the progress on S-ON should be like this:
-flash CWM
-flash superuser rights (thats how it worked on the HTC One X)

Thanks for all your help miniAndroidian (the Nexus 4 should be awesome, (I am saving up, but they are not available in Australia at the moment. I told my daughter she should get one too, but she hasn't got the money either, so that's why I am working on the Wildfire)
Unfortunately the post you directed me to says you have to flash the CWM recovery from the stock recovery but I don't have that anymore as I have replaced it with the CWM recovery which just hangs. There must be a way round it, but I am no expert at all.

Same in Germany with the Nexus 4 but it should be avalible in the middle of january

You have to put the "update.zip" to the root of your SD-Card and boot into the bootloader menu (the white screen with 3 android's on the bottom) and then it should recognize the new CWM.
Terrific. I didn't understand it. My daughter lives 100km from me so I will have to visit her this weekend. She left after Christmas saying "Dad, admit it you are a failure" after I had spent hours on it, so this might show her I am not as useless as she thinks. I am intending to flash the "mini" CM 9 rom. I hope this is the best one.

I really hope it works (i'm out of solutions ) otherwise you should really think about S-Off'ing it.
miniCM 9 is the fastest one but the sensor buttons don't give a vibration feedback it's a kinda annoying.

I have had a very very frustrating day. I tried "update.zip", didn't do anything. I even renamed it "pc49img.zip" nothing. I finally found a windows program called "unlock root". I used the free version. You just connect up the phone via usb and press root. It gets you to confirm it is a wildfire and then after a bit says successfully rooted. I then installed Superuser, Rom Manager and ES File Explorer to check it.
I backed up the present rom successfully with Rom Manager. It even has an option for flashing Clockworkmod recovery and one for rebooting into recovery for manual management. It downloads CWM recovery 5.0.2.0 but it doesn't work either (looking at the files on the SD card I think it is just the same as the "update.zip"). There is also an option for installing a rom from sd card but when I went to this it asked if there was any addon, and of course I need tiny gapps. It then said I need the paid version for this. Seeing the recovery didn't work I didn't want to risk it.
My conclusion is all the present CWM recoveries require S-Off. I have read some people like the Aroma installer. I know nothing about it, but I wonder if it might be possible to install the CM 9 rom with it.
I have worked out what my problem has been. I have fallen for the old Trackball trick. I must be the only person not to know you use the Trackball in CWM recovery not the power button. I sent my daughter an email and she has confirmed the recovery in Rom Manager actually works when you use the Trackball. I will have to visit her again now to install CM 9.

I've been following xda for a while now, but this is my first post so please take it easy on me, if I posted this in the wrong thread.
I am not new to rooting and costom roms. I have successfully rooted one phone before and I used it for a more than a year, didn't have any problems at all. Yesterday I got myself HTC One X and today I tried to root it and somehow got myself stucked/bricked.
The phone is stuck on HTC Quietly brilliant screen. I can get into bootloader, but thats it. What can I do? I already tried to flash back the original ROM, but couldn't get device to connect to PC. I looked all over the forum and googled it and still can't seem to find the solution. Any help would be highly apprechiated.

Something went wrong when I tried to root it. It probably didn't go through with it. I tried to flash a stock rom back, after I got stuck but it won't go, because I can't connect with PC.

Which recovery have you installed? If it's twrp you can mount SD from there put a custom ROM on it with superuser (root) flash that ROM from recovery and you have root. It's by far the easiest way to flash a custom ROM to get root instead of getting root on a stock ROM.
And BTW, the hox is not easy to brick of you ask me so don't panic (yet)

need to be more specific. did it happend just after you tried rooting? or did you try to install/flash rom/kernel/(recovery etc)
try to root again . use this tool. its the easiest. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439
i m no expert but from my experience your problem occurs when you flash incampatable kernel..also, we cannot s-off our one x so you have to flash the kernel (named as boot.img, if not , you rename it) manually via fastboot. (download sdk tools) when flashing new rom.

As you said, I used that tool. I installed HTC Drivers, registered at HTCDev, got TokenID, submitted it and unlocked Bootloader. Everything went ok, the only thing that was wrong was with the MTP device driver, which failed to install every time. (I think that was the reason why it disconnected with PC). I then procceded to Perm Root where it got stuck on the phone with red explanation point screen. From there I could still reset phone to a normal state like there was no changes.
Then I tried InsecureBootAndRoot, followed the steps and shortly after it started rooting, the program closed and it was stuck here. I tried to do it again, but I got the message: Waiting for a device.
Can you explain in more detail, how to flash kernel manually, if my computer doesn't recognize device?

Have you flashed a rom yet or are you still on stock? Do you prefer sense roms or AOSP/cyanogen?

No, I haven't. I am now practically without a rom (I think). I would prefer custom rom (like cyanogen).
The problem is that everytime I try to do anything for example, flash back factory RUU, I get the message: device not found. Is this because of problem with drivers. Someone please help me out

If you want cyanogen you need a custom recovery like TWRP. That recovery you can flash through fastboot but like you said there is something wrong with your drivers. Did you install HTC sync on your PC. And did you enable USB debugging in your current ROM?

Yes, I got CWM recovery. I just discovered that. I installed and uninstalled all the latest htc drivers and htc sync many times. It enabled debugging mode, the last time I was on stock rom (don't know if you can check that now in bootloader?) If my phone is not rooted, than I can't install custom rom right, because I think it isn't. how can I check that?

No you don't need root to flash a custom ROM. Flashing a custom ROM will give you root. So you are doing things the wrong way. If you can get into cwm then make sure you have cyanogen.zip and gapps.zip on your phone. Extract(copy) the boot.IMG file from cyanogen. Then from cwm do a nandroid backup, full wipe except SD card, flash cyanogen, flash gapps. Then from cwm boot into boot loader, make sure you place the extracted boot.IMG in your fastboot folder on PC and in command line give commands: fastboot flash boot boot.img then: fastboot erase cache then: fastboot reboot Then you can unplug USB and it will start cyanogen and you have root.

Okay, so I installed latest CM10 and gapps. How to extract boot.IMG form cyanogen?
I extracted boot.img from Cyanogenmod zip file (that is the same for everybody, right?). I did a Nandroid backup like you said But now all I can do is wipe data/factory reset (CWM Recovery v5.8.4.0). I can't find an option to wipe only selected things.
I was blind, but now I see! I got it running. Everything works great. Thanks to all of you, especially to J_Dutch :victory:

Glad you got it up and running! Hope you enjoy the custom ROM, with every other ROM you flash you will need that boot.img to be flashed separately.

The subject pretty much says it all. Now that we have S-Off again (yay, way to go developers) which would you use and why, CWM or TWRP? Pros? Cons?

I've used both CWM and TWRP pretty extensively over the last few years but I have settled on TWRP just because I like the layout and ease of use. So far I haven't ran into anything that didn't play nice with either one, so for me its an aesthetic choice.
I've only used TWRP once. A lot of people are using it these days because of the theming options and it being faster than CWM but I've read too many reports about various flashes not working properly with it. Stability trumps coolness for me so I'm sticking with CWM.
I've used TWRP since I got my rezound way back when and have used it since then there where some issues fliashing kitkat when it first came out. Philz is a nice recovery too.

I wanted to chime in here: I've used both on my HTC one for Verizon and I seem to have a problem with both. After using JCase's root app and successfully getting s-off, I'm not able to get either recoveries to flash the superuser apk so that I can sustain root access. This is preventing me from flashing any rom. I know that a bunch of other people on this forum were able to get their roms flashed on so I was wondering if it's something I've done wrong, or just incompatibility with these 2 recoveries?
Steps I took:
1) installed JCase's weaksauce app, rebooted
2) obtained root, downloaded SU from market
3) proceeded with firewater to obtain s-off (successful)
4) installed clockwork recovery via fastboot.
5) proceeded to install superuser, unsuccessful.
6) rebooted phone, uninstalled SU (from 1st installation prior to s-off)
7) attempted to reinstall SU from Clockwork - fail.
8) flashed TWRP recovery, attempted to install SU, failed.
Not sure if there are other recoveries that I should be trying?

Are you sure you obtained S-Off? One S-Off is complete, uninstall weaksauce, and flash recovery via fastboot (makes sure your using the latest cwm or TWP. I used this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416431
Boot into recovery and flash SU. Worked like a champ for me.

Thank you so much for your response. Yup, when I hold down the power and volume down button, my hboot says Unlocked at the top (which I believe to be the status of my bootloader) and S-Off.
I flashed recovery via fastboot, and tried what I believe to be the latest versions of both Clockwork and TWRP. I'll check out the link you sent again and will post results.
Question for you, after you uninstalled the weaksauce app, you left SU installed, correct? So the process would be uninstall weaksauce, reboot to fastboot mode, flash recovery, flash rom?

Yep that's what I did. I flashed superuser before flashing the rom though. What error do you get when you try to flash superuser?
Oh wait, I just read your initial post. Youre not trying to flash an .apk through recovery right? You should be flashing a .zip file in recovery.
You don't have to flash super user to flash a Rom either bro as long as you have custom recovery you can flash wahat ever Rom you want ?

Yep, just to clarify I originally flashed superuser because I kept the stock rom, but I quickly went to the debloated rom the next day. But Coach is right, you don't need superuser to flash the rom.
Philz touch is by far the most user friendly. Lots of customization options. Its based on cwm but is much better.

I had cwm corrupt all my backups I had. Since then I ran twrp. As far as Rom issues people seems to have outdated twrp version or something about the Rom. When I had a Rom fail to flash while in recovery I would reboot recovery and would then flash just fine

Twrp all the way. Its faster at backup and restore, and themeable.
I had really good luck with TWRP 2.6.3.4 but when I upgraded to 2.7.0.1 suddenly backups failed. Never got an answer back on why that was happening, so I switched to Phiz and haven't had a problem with it yet so I'm gonna stick with it for now.
Philz Touch Advanced CWM is the best recovery, hands down. Try it. You will see.

I tried it and wasn't impressed. Every process seemed to take forever to do. With latest twrp I can do a backup in under a min.

1. If I root my HTC One M8 with the stock rom, will I still get updates, or will I have to flash a rom everytime there is an update from HTC?
2. How can I manage folders and write to my microSD card once I root?
3. Once I root and unlock my bootloader do I have to flash a rom or will the stock one be automatically flashed? I want to remain stock just like the phone came out of the box, and get all my updates from HTC automatically. I just want to have the H/K audio enhancements and I want to be able to move things to my SD card. Thats the only reason I want to root. Any help in doing this is greatly appreciated. In fact, if someone helps me out greatly with a step-by-step by rooting,keeping stock,getting H/K, being able to write to sd, I will pay them $5 via Paypal if thats allowed here....
Oh, and I have the Unlocked version.

Any root file explorer app should be fine. I use Es file explorer.

This question makes me believe you don't have much understanding of what rooting is and that means if something goes wrong, you will not be able to fix it. This is a dangerous. I strongly suggest doing some reading and trying to understand before you mess around (no I don't care to know how many devices you've rooted in the past). This is the only warning I will give you.
Unlock bootloader at HTCdev.com
boot to TWRP or Philz Touch (fastboot boot customrecoveryfilename.img)
Make a nandroid backup and save for just in case.
Install supersu or superuser (custom recovery should offer to install root for you, I know TWRP does, not sure about Philz Touch)
Firewater S-OFF (optional, extra dangerous, HK may not work without it.)
Install HK
Install a file explorer app capable of requesting root.

Correct. However, after you have everything like you want it, you will need to flash the original recovery back to your device. From what I understand, the OTA updates don't work with a custom recovery.
However, you should also consider that nearly every ROM in this forum will be updated within a few days anytime a new release is pushed. I can speak from personal experience that ARHD 5.5 is nearly identical to stock. It would only then require a weekly visit to his thread to see if a new release is out. Every other Sense based ROM here would be the same. Just mentioning that you do have alternatives.
Don't flash twrp. Just boot to it. Since you're not flashing roms, no point in flashing a custom recovery.

You don't need it for Sd card access
You might need it for HK as I stated earlier. If you don't understand why you might need it. read the thread I linked.

Intend to root my M8 but keep it in stock for the time being. So just rooting and booting into recovery to take backup.
I am a newbie so trying out the advantages of rooting and taking it one step at a time. As such Custom Roms are not my priority right now. Flexibility to OTA update is a priority, for which i have learnt that other than installing some basic root apps like titanium, if i decide to flash custom roms/recovery, overclock/undervolting, then i loose that flexibility.

3. Don't remove system apps. Use titanium backup to freeze if you don't want them running so you can unfreeze if needbe.
Tip 1
Make nandroids when you make changes so you can revert back, you can always boot into custom recovery to make and/or restore nandroids.
Tip 2
Always know how to undo what you're doing. If you don't have an undo plan, don't do it.

I am new to HTC and want to do all the necessary research before I root my phone. I have read your everything explained guide which was very helpful. As with the other users on this thread I want to gain root access but I do not want to run custom ROMs and I still want to receive OTA updates to my phone. It looks like simply booting into a custom recovery such TWRP and flashing supersu will enable root access without changing the stock recovery.
Can you explain how I boot into TWRP recovery without actually flashing it? It seems like every thread or guide I find online instructs me to flash a custom recovery. Where do I place the TWRP recovery file on my computer in order to boot into recovery?

so long as you have fastboot available on your pc, , connect the phone in fastboot mode, then on the pc open a command prompt in teh folder where the recovery is(**), and issue teh command
Fastboot boot custom-recovery-name.img
that should boot you without flashing it.
** browse to the folder where it is in regular explorer, then hold shift and right click, there will be an 'open command prompt here' option in teh menu.

Thank you for the help.
If I am following correctly here are some basic steps I should follow. In order to get fastboot on my computer should I download the entire Google SDK from the google developer website. This file will then include everything I need on my computer in terms of fastboot. I should also ensure that I have all of the latest HTC one (m8) drivers installed on my computer.
Then I should download the latest version of TWRP and ensure that the file name is matches custom-recovery-name.img
I should enter fastboot mode on my phone and connect it to my computer. Following the command prompt, I will boot into TWRP recovery. Once in TWRP recovery can I disconnect my phone from the computer? I should first create a nandroid backup (as a precaution) then I should install supersu. Once I install supersu I should have root accress.
I just need to reboot my phone and it should still have the stock recovery but now with root access.

sorry, can't answer the SDK stuff, I didn't have to install any SDK, BUT it may have still been installed from when I used to flash my HD2 a few yrs ago, , or perhaps the drivers are installed when you first connect the phone in fastboot mode to teh PC?
Whichever, I certainly don't currently have the SDK installed, so it's either leftovers, or it comes with the drivers. (EDIT - i also have myphoneexplorer installed, which installs certain drivers and stuff too,,,)
try it, put the phone in fastboot, , connect it to usb, let windows install whatever drivers it feels, then open a command prompt on teh PC and type
fastboot
if it says unknown command, then its not there, if it gives you lots of lines of help info, then fastboot is installed.
Assuming it works (or once you get it working) change custom-recovery-name to say whatever your recovery is called, and it will boot the phone allowing you to perform all the normal actions. Whether or not it will allow SU to install, I don't know, i've only had the phone 2 days, and all i did was HTC bootloader unlock, flash twrp, install su, flash viperrom and done.

Thank you for the advice. I have rooted one other phone in the past and I remember using adb commands, so my computer may already have fastboot enabled.
Since I do not want to flash the custom recovery and only boot into recovery will I need to keep the phone connected to my computer while in TWRP recovery?
why would you need to unhook it? play it safe and leave it connected.
I have been using this method to boot into TWRP to re-install SuperSU after each HTC ONE M8 update. However, with the update just released (Android 4.4.3), when I issue the command it just has the phone reboot. It does not bring up TWRP. Any ideas?
