I may not be understanding your issue correctly, but have you tried setting the default texting app to the the Google App in Settings/More/Default SMS App?

I did try that also compared the settings to the both htc one M8s' we have.
I finally just did a factory reset and rechecked the settings and ticked the stock messaging app and so far its fine..
Weird one as it was checked before the reset..
I'd love to get all of this extra Verizon "gumbo" off these phones, I can't stand how much garbage they load on them.

Root and uninstall that junk app. I did.

I didn't think anything was available for the htc one m8 on Verizon to do so yet?

Verizon Messaging can be disabled under the App Manager. You can also, using a custom launcher, drag the icon to the top of your screen under App Info, and disable it there. Same goes for their VVM and Caller ID apps.

[Q] Handcent

So ive seen handcent all over the fourm and people talking about how great it is. So i downloaded it and i admit its amazing. The only problem ive run into is that when i get a message is shows up in handcent and the stock text program. How do i disable that so my phone only uses handcent?
In the stock messaging app, you need to go into settings (when it's open hit "menu" and then "settings") and turn off the notifications for receiving a message. Back out of it, and you should be good-to-go. I personally turned off all notifications in the stock app.

Much appreciated I though that there might be a way to totally disable the stock program because they will still pile up in there wont they?
Yea, the messages will still be in the stock one. The way I understand it though, all the messages come into/out of a single spot. The messaging programs (Handcent, the stock one, etc.) just look in that area to let you text. So you can just remove the stock one from being linked on one of your home pages, and then you never have to see it again. There might be a way to remove that program itself, but I don't know it. It doesn't bother me though since I just don't ever open it and instead use Handcent.
You could always uninstall it via adb if you are rooted. Search "how to remove bloatware (or unwanted apps)" or some variant.

Just don't delete it! LOL! Trust me! That and don't delete Facebook out off the phone either. Those were BIIIIIGGGG mistakes. LOL! I won't ever do that again. Good thing I do nandroid back ups before I try experimenting with removing stuff.
Anyone having touble with Hancent opening since 2.2? I have at least a 30 second lag when I launch, almost like a memory full issue.
I have the stock notifications off and am not rooted.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
jfk
freeze it thru titanium backup like i did! u can defrost it any time!
I've tried Handcent a few times and it seems OK but has a fatal flaw. My wife and I use txt-to-email and back. She send my a txt on vtxt.com and I reply through my SMS service straight to her email address which pops up on her Blackberry. Handcent won't sent messages to email addresses.

For Those Having Problems on GVoice

Seeing the "similar threads we found", I see that I'm not the only one having this issue and we're not the only phone having problems.
Turns out there's a known issue on Google Voice where if the customer adds a line, subtracts a line or screws with their service in any way that requires an activation of the line that's on Google Voice (like an upgrade...yknow like we all did ), that Google Voice can fizzle out. Basically, it automatically unchecks the box that says "this phone can receive texts" which prevents your phone from receiving texts. This also changes the setting on the phone app to route texts through your stock messages app again. This will step-by-step you into changing them back.
Well I got mine working again, and I'd like to share how I did it so maybe it'll work for you.
**NOTICE**
This is for one line on Google Voice only. Apparently this won't work if you have multiple phones attached to the same Google account.
Okay:
1. open up your web browser and go to: voice.google.com. Then open up google voice on your phone.
2. in the browser, click your phone number (top right corner). A menu will pop up and you'll notice the "this phone receives text messages" (or however it's written) is unchecked. That's the bug, it'll uncheck itself every time you go to that screen. Also, when this box becomes unchecked, it actually changes a setting in the Google Voice app on your phone to route texts through the stock messaging app again (annoying).
3. Check that box so that it's one (don't close out of the browser yet, leave it on that screen)
4. Then, in your google voice app on the phone, go to menu > more > settings > notifications and sync where there's a drop down menu specifying whether you want messages received by the messages app or GVoice. choose which one you want (i'm assuming if you're here, you use GVoice). This is the setting I mentioned that it changes in the app (all the way back in step 2).
5. Now you should still have GVoice open in your browser. If not, you follow directions badly and need to repeat the process. If yes, you should have the unchecked box checked (when it wasn't before) and the setting on the phone app itself changed back to normal.
6. While the browser is open, have a few people text you. You should now be getting texts and voicemails delivered to your GVoice account again. This isn't necessary, but to test to make sure you did it right.
Last: once you re-establish that "connection" close the browser and never go back to that options page again (it'll just un-check that box and change that setting on the phone and make you do this all over again). Now your GVoice should be working properly.
*addendum*
If you're still have trouble after this. Go back to the options page where you started, check the box, then uninstall/re-install Gvoice on your phone and go through the set up again...then continue following the steps.
*addendum 2*
If this fails, then disable GVoice services with Sprint and set them up anew using the app on your phone (like you did the first time).
Don't worry about the "can't do whatever", just hit "skip".
Then follow the steps above.
Hope this helps, I know us GVoice users are minority but hey we need people to figure crap out too

I have tried these steps and nothing works..If i change the setting in the app to use the google voice app for receiving text it automatically un checks the box online in the google voice settings. When I recheck the box online the app reverts back to using the stock app for messaging in the goggle voice app. quite pissed off about it but i'm still receiving calls from my google voice number so I guess I will live with it until its figured out.

here's the essential part:
Check the box, but leave the browser window open so you can see it.
save the setting for using GVoice but leave the settings open so you can see it.
Then open a new browser window and text someone using the browser interface in a separate tab. I use Google Chrome and have the GVoice extension so I didn't need to do that.
The idea to get texts moving back and forth while both are checked without leaving so they can't uncheck (which they won't do if you stay in the windows).
Once you get the flow of traffic going, then leave those settings windows and never, ever go back to them. It's a cheap fix and a house of cards of sorts (i've accidentally undone my own work twice), but it does work.
Ok..this is what I discovered for me. I have an Evo3D flashed to boost and I have the same google voice number going to it as I do the touch. I was looking at my settings online and suddenly the box for receiving text to the 3D was unchecked so I rechecked it. Well when I did that my messages started going through the stock messaging app on the 3D . So I decided to uncheck both my Touch and my 3d in the settings online to receive text and now I'm getting my text back through the google app. This makes no sense but its working right now.

I suspect it'll be fixed in the next update or two.
If you didn't mind going through the WHOLE set up process again, you could find and download an older apk and just go back to a bug-free version. I have a transparent themed one and an inverted one from before the latest update and they worked fine before I updated it (ever since, they are screwed up).

Messaging app lag?

Just wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same thing. I haven't experienced any lag with this phone whatsoever except for the stock messaging app.
1) Sometimes when I open the messaging app, the preview of a text messaging thread may be from many hours ago and then "refresh" itself to the most recent text. Essentially when I open the app, the preview shows a much older text message and then after a couple seconds will show the most recent one.
2) Sometimes when I push send on a message, it will take a second before the text is actually sent so if I continue to text, it will add on to the previous message until sent.
The only way I've found to correct this is to switch to the "SMS/MMS" tab, which seems to correct the lag, but of course any time you push the back button out of the app, it goes back to the deault "all messages" tab when opening. I also tried holding down the tab titles and it brings you to a screen which it almost looks like HTC was going to give the option to remove other tabs but the boxes cannot be unchecked.
Anyone else running into these issues? Find a solution?
Yeah ive noticed the same weirdly enough I don't feel lag when using sliding messaging app or textra

I don't recall having any of those issues but for me what happens is when I open the message app, in the list of people I've been texting, it shows their phone number for a second, and then it switches to their name. And it only happens once in a while. Like right now, it's not happening. Weird

I have these two issues.
This stock HTC Messages app automatically closes when you back out of sending a reply message, so it doesn't refresh the preview list like previous HTC phones on a reply. On the same token, it appears that it completely quits the Messages app, requiring you to load the names from the Contacts app when you open the Messages app without replying to a message. If you press Home rather than Back, when you open the Messages app again, it loads the messaging screen with the contact you most recently messaged, the person to whom you just replied. If you open the app and send a message, then press Back, it loads the list again, and everything is all good. It's all very odd.
Well glad to see I'm not the only one. I had tried Handcent, Chomp, etc with nothing but lag and other issues. Thanks to the response from NSRpxndxhou, I tried Textra and actually really like it. Best replacement text app I've tried.
I like how HTC's stock messaging app looks, but it ended up simply being too slow. I switched to Textra, enabled the dark theme and never looked back. Silky smooth performance, even with giant threads.
I am in the middle of an email conversation with the guys at Textra. I love the app. But my group messages are not working correctly. Those guys are great. Within one day I got an email with an update to try.... make that two updates. Just got another one while typing this.

Textra does seem nice, but there are a couple things I would miss from the stock messaging app. I like the ability to search ALL your text messages to find a specific text. I also prefer to have the time stamp on each and every text like the stock application does. I also don't like how it shows the contacts phone number below their name.
I would likely use this as a stock replacement if they were able to integrate all those features.

You may want to consider going into messaging->settings->general and adding a text limit (default at 200). When you do this you will notice your messaging to be a bit more zippy. This is because its not trying to open all of your old previous messages (which can be in the thousands).

I had a Messaging app issue when I had too many messages, which was fixed by deleting them, but that whole "reloading" issue seems to be separate.
Even with a few messages, it tends to reload upon reopening the Messaging app. Really weird why it does it...

Had this issue as well, found out that if you go to the stock messaging app settings > MMS > then connection settings, this gives you the APN. Copy that URL and paste it in the Textra MMS settings. Mines worked flawlessly ever since. Not experiencing any lag like the stock messaging app, and have noticed no difference in features.

Man.....Verizon can kiss my A** with all this bloatware

I can't wait to get root. NFL Mobile constantly popping up. EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET A CALL THAT CALLER ID THING COMES UP. Verizon Messenger, etc. WTF. This is ridiculous.
Go to Settings, Application Manager, All and uninstall what you can and if you can't do that, disable.
What is more worrying is all the features they removed.
Aye man be glad you don't have a Galaxy phone lmao, especially S5 & under, those things are filled with bloat from bottom to top and without root are the legit true phone nightmare. S6 improved a bit but not as much as it could've been. Satisfied with my G4 so far, just got it today and not too much bloat, I can live with it.
You can disable most of that stuff right from the application manager section of settings, and you will not see it anymore.
If you want to go hardcore use the debloater tool. I've hidden every app I normal remove with root including concierge.
The G4's bloat is insignificant compared to the Sammy phones man!

That annoying caller id can be semi-taken care of. If you are using an app and a call comes in, you can have it only pop up a much smaller icon that lets you know of an incoming call instead of that humongous annoying full screen caller id. From the home screen, tap the dialer icon. You have to be on 'Dial' or 'Recent', just hit the 3 dots in the top right and select Call settings. Down towards the bottom there is an option "Incoming voice call pop-up" that is unchecked by default. This will give a much smaller pop up that you can use just like the full screen. And if you don't want to see it when a call comes in, you can just swipe it up and the call will eventually go to voice mail. Or you can just hit decline and continue using the app that you were.
Hope this helps some :good:

Did anyone else get the update (today) for Verizons "supports and protection" app. My concern is the "protection" part...it appears to be an antivirus. Fine, with every other scenario, with our possible future exploit...I turned it off/disabled it for piece of mind.

I have disabled protection as well; along with few others. (verizon navigation and visual voice mail)
Huh, I guess I was being dense. Every phone I've had before the disable option was turned off for all the bloat from the get go so you couldn't disable. I just disabled a metric ton of crap on my phone. MUCH better already! Thanks XDA!!!!!!
Yea I use Nova Launcher and drag and drop unwanted Apps to the desktop "App Info", where it goes directly to the option to either Uninstall or Disable. I weeded through all of the App Drawer apps, then dive into the actual Application Manager where I Disabled several there too.
I DO love the Visual VM app, so that is the one thing I like to keep.
For some reason I liked there messaging app better than the LG one.

One (free) alternative to the Visual Voicemail app is Google Voice. You can configure your phone send unanswered calls to your Google voicemail instead of Verizon's. This will automatically transcribe the emails for you. It can be a bit hit or miss, but it's better than nothing! It also lets you play your voicemails individually without having to call in and listen to them all.
www.google.com/voice
DT Ignite
Be sure to disable DT Ignite (uninstall not available). It is used by the cell companies to push apps to your phone without your consent. I was wondering why Cookie Crushers and another app showed up two days after I activated my G4. A Google search turned up an article showing that this app is what does it. At least I was able to uninstall the added bloatware that was installed via DT Ignite.

Yea I used Google Voice and it was nice. It worked enough for me to get a jist of the message but it would be really funny sometimes. I REALLY like Verizon's Visual Voicemail. It is just easy. I like being able to delete multiple messages at once and pick and choose.
@OP, coming from the G2 the Bloatware is about the same. This should be no surprise. I had a Verizon G2 that had official lollipop. I think the apps were exactly the same. I use the same method I used on the G4. I use Nova to drag apps and uninstall what I can and Disable the rest.
There is an actual Debloater Tool, but you have to be careful with it as it lists EVERYTHING. I find it much easier to do it my way. No PC. No Drivers. No risk of removing an important app.

While I do agree verizon should do anything the phone, the extra software they added on isn't 'too' bad once you think of it. I looked at my disabled menu and its about less than 10 apps? It is not as awful as it was on my G2. with a bit of time you can tweek the phone to your liking. Maybe it is Stockholm syndrome but I'm starting to like LG's layout as they have progressed over the past 2 years..I am looking forward to custom roms though
I do not understand why verizon would want anyone to use their messaging app.. all it does is cause confusion and cause people who are unaware they can change default messaging apps to switch to an iphone or something else. I do not understand why they think this is a good thing. the simple stupid solution is always better!
still a bit ticked off that they removed smart settings from our phones (multi user etc). I could honestly live without, but the fact they did it for their personal gain (which actually hurts them) makes zero sense to me.
kinda wished verizon added wireless charging, like the g2... OH well, its a simple enough fix.

HTC U12+ Known Issues

Sooo I got the phone last Thursday and am using it on Verizon. I've had a few issues that I figured I'd throw a thread together incase anyone else has the same...
Known Issues that I have:
"GroupMe" application will not update unless I am in the application and clicking on a specific chat. - Worked on every other phone I have and cant even find anything on this subject on google. If someone sends a message in a chat it will not update or notify me. I have to click on the specific chat for it to update. I've reinstalled the app 3 times and cleared the cache. un-optimized it with battery settings, nothing is working.
Fixed Issues that I have:
Phantom vibration. - Almost like a notification is happening but nothing is showing on the screen. Cant figure out this one for the life of me. I even have a notification log downloaded and it just vibrates away with nothing being logged.
Found out it was Verizon Caller ID app. Apparently it keeps crashing and "starting" over and over again. I disabled notifications on it and the vibration went away!
MMS Cannot be received only sent. - I've gone through this extensively with Verizon support. Tried everything on another thread, switched out sim blah blah blah, finally they have opened a ticket with the engineers and will get back to me in 48 hours.
Works now in default app just not android messages......................................
Anyone else having any other issues?
That's disappointing that there are mms issues. MMS on the U11 using anything but the stock messaging app was a complete ****show. I hope you can get more bands than just 13 as well.

MMS works fine on my European un-locked (and rooted) U12+. Got one as late as yesterday... Using stock SMS app.

Someone on Android Central had Verizon block messaging and then re-add it for everything to work. Maybe worth a shot?
Same here... Unlocked US model. Send but not receive texts...
I've done the same, reset, new SIM, swapped Sims etc.
I'll take a look on AC and see if they have something there for a solution... Thanks for the heads-up. Glad I'm not alone.

I have found that Android messages app doesn't work as you can't select the preferred sim for messages. Having to use stock at the moment.
Somewhere in another thread, there was an adb command I think that set and enforced the default sim slot. Wonder if that would help with your issue, Nestacres? Sorry, I would search myself and link but just checking in on a quick break at work.

Android Messages isn't comiled for usage with Dual-SIM, as Google Nexus/Pixel phones are all Single-SIM devices. If you know how to use adb you cand do the following:
From adb shell run the following command
Code:
adb shell settings put global multi_sim_sms 1
This did the trick on the U11 DUGL as well, and Android Messages could be used and worked just fine. Thanks to @Electronic Punk for pointing that one out to me!
Soooo Got MMS to work on the default app and with Verizon Message +.... Android messages still does not work and that is something many others have said as well....
Very sad.

Pr3dict: did you do anything different other than what you originally posted? I've been on vacation since i got the U12 and haven't called Verizon. I can send everything, but not receive. I can pop the SIM and put it in my iPhone x and the texts just role in immediately...I really want to love this phone! Lol

It actually works great with dual sim, for some reason HTC left out the default SMS sim option out on Oreo (simply doesn't exist in settings.apk anymore) and only left the data one. Fortunately that fix is basically a fire and forget, once it sees a default it has no issue picking between them.
HTC handle it differently on phone and SMS as they have a button for each sim.

Yeah they handle it quite different. But let's see. Maybe we'll get an overhaul with Android P.

I did everything possible. Even got a new SIM... What seemed to do the trick (and was the last thing I did) was having Verizon block my messages and then unblock them.
Then I could send + receive. Beforehand I could only Send... But beware it does not work with Android Messages.

How did you first activate your phone? If it's not activated properly on Verizon it can fry your SIM card or cause things to not work.
I first swapped my SIM from my U11 and could not make calls but was able to use internet and send and receive text and mms. But just like the U11, I can only receive MMS on the stock apps like HTC messaging and Verizon message+. Cannot receive MMS on third party apps.
But the proper way to activate the U11 and U12+ is to first register your imei with Verizon then you have to transfer your SIM from a Verizon device that has advanced calling/VoLTE in the settings.
The U12+ does not have any Verizon advanced calling or VoLTE setting so if you just pop a new SIM in without first having it activated on a Verizon advanced calling device, it could cause problems and fry your SIM card.
It sucks but that is the best way to activate it.
Manually attached IMEI to SIM, and toggled messages/on/off on my account.
All is well and working for receiving SMS/MMS on stock messages! It worked immediately...
Thanks for the feedback and discussion everyone.

In my case, after updating (purely, after RUU) to v1.21.401.3 I have noticed a few times that after picking up the device and "squeezing" I should wake up, scan my face and unlock my smartphone (I have my preferences set) .
But just the few times after "squeezing" the device does not react at all, there is no vibration.
After the traditional unlocking (applying the finger to the fingerpront or pressing the POWER button) the smartphone wakes up properly.
This happens when the smartphone is not used for a long time (deep sleep?).
But this is not the rule.
I also had ONE total reboot.
On the other hand, the update did not improve in the first few months the best inflections of the volume up button (Vol +). Very often you have to press many times "to surprise", and pressing and holding it to turn up in series - is very difficult to achieve

Is anyone else having issues with the youtube app? Im finding it buggy. To be precise: if I start a video and then turn the phone landscape to go into fullscreen, if I then turn back the phone vertical and come out of fullscreen and then try minimise the still playing video it goes a bit haywire, parts of the screen goes grey and I can't minimise the video. Can any replicate?!

New issue thats bothering THE CRAP OUT OF ME!!!!
The phone isnt vibrating on incoming calls. I thought I just kept not feeling it or hearing it but nope, the phone literally turns the screen on and it just doesnt vibrate. I don't have battery saver on, and I don't have "Do not disturb" on. Its weird.

Discovered a slight work around since. It doesn't happen if you go in and out of fullscreen using little button in the bottom right. So it only happens with auto rotation.
