[Q] problem in rooting - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi guys
i'm a new user and PLEASE help me!
i want to root my new nexus 7 (2013) but i can't.
VROOT and Kingo detect my device but can't root.
unknown sources and usb debugging are activated and i tested with both mtp and ptp mode.

I used wugs toolbox and it did a good job. that is my suggestion. , unless you want to, at. this point, do the whole thing yourself with the SDK/abm.

if i want to root via wugs toolbox i have to unlock bootloader and my device will wipe.
better suggestion with no wipe?

I'm pretty sure you HAVE to wipe when your bootloader gets unlocked. This is why it's always suggested to root as soon as you get the device.

There is no way around wiping when the bootloader is unlocked. This is easy manually though.
First unlock the bootloader and install aTWRP custom recovery

Then you flash a root zip and you're done.

Stop using Toolkits....
If you have a custom recovery you can download a SuperUser.zip and flash that.. this should give you what you want. Or you can download a Custom Rom and just flash that... problem solved you also dont have to go through the process of deleting the stock-recovery.sh that runs and kills your custom recovery.
I already fixed it but thanks for the reply and I should be not using tool kits thatsbfor sure but what do you mean about a custom recovery? How would I install that? So I would install the custom recovery then flash the su file and then flash a new from is this correct?

If you want to find out if your rooted check Play Movies. It will say ur appeared to be rooted and refuse service to the device.
The toolkit is amazing. I don't know why someone wouldn't recommend using it.
CWMR is a emergency thing in my opinion. It saves my butt countless amounts of time. U can flash it with Rom Manager, CWMR touch, and Rom Toolbox.
They are all available in the play store.
The toolkit isn't recommended because people don't learn things themselves. OP go superuser and see if things are given root or denied.

CWM is the most important tool in a crack flashers toolbox.
Flash it from rom manager he says, you can get it from play store...... kids these days.

I was just saying the simplest way on how to do it in my opinion.
And I don't use CWMR much. Only if something goes wrong.

[Q] complete unlock process

honesly I havent rooted or unlocked my bootloader yet, i dont really have a sense of urgency. at least not till aosp roms drop.
my question is, now that the boot loader has been cracked. we should expect an untethered recovery right?
also, from what i undrstand. i have to root first, then boot loader unlock, then i can flash the tethered recovery, right?
When you root and unlock the bootloader using the methods in the dev threads it will put in CWM.

I honestly have no idea what tethered version is, I am assuming you can only get into it by plugging your phone in and running some type of cmd? If so, then its untethered cause I can use it anywhere.

The Freegee bootloader unlock process installs it for you. You can wipe, mount, flash.... it gave me an error when I tried to back up but i'm pretty sure that can be done too.

You have to backup up to internal sd card or something like that, it's a few lines down from the normal backup.

i guess the following is too much work:
Code:
boot into bootloader
fastboot oem unlock (which you dont even need to do if you're already unlocked.)
let the phone reboot into android.
move supersu.zip over to your sd card
reboot into bootloader
fastboot flash recovery cwm.img
scroll through menu to get to recovery
flash supersu.zip
must be just too hard for you.

You don't need it as it's not needed to root the phone..........
Therefore you don't need it..

And since you can't go through simple steps, don't bother trying to root..

If you install the simple fix here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44597339#post44597339
You can install future OTAs successfully and keep root.

Just rooting doesn't prevent updates. You just lose root and have to reapply after update.
Custom recovery means you probably need to download the update file and apply it via the recovery instead of the automatic updater.
Changing or removing system files will almost definitely prevent updates being applied.

I JUST did this. I had TWRP and rooted. I has 15J. Booted my nandroid. Downloaded the 15Q update, restarted to install. TWRP caught the stock image and flashed it.
Then I booted into 15Q. I lost root and TWRP. Flashed over TWRP through fastboot and rooted.
No issues.

hi sfhub, do I need to do
fastboot oem unlock
before doing
fastboot boot twrp.img ?
I've been rooted since day one and gotten ota updates fine.
I use twrp and just make sure to flash supersu each time and call it good. Not a single problem on my end.
Even still if you bork it just flash factory image. It's pretty simple to get out of a pinch. But rooting and ota should work fine as long as you keep stock image. Just reflash supersu each time and you're good to go.

If you aren't already unlocked then, yes.
Most people will already be unlocked though if they are rooted.
fastboot oem unlock process will force a factory reset for security purposes so backup anything important.

I haven't rooted my device yet , I am on all stock. Does 'fastboot boot' just loads the twrp image and not flash it?
How will I be able to backup stuff, are there any other options aside from titanium backup that requires root .

There are some backup apps that don't need root, but probably need to restore.
You can also try adb backup, but it may not backup 100% of your stuff.
I'm not the best person to ask on the backup as I always unlock before I do most of the software installs just so I can avoid losing customizations later on.

Thanks, I am currently backing up using adb., a non 100% backup is better than no backup at all. I hate redoing things.

Yes, very simple, just type
fastboot oem lock
I would advise against doing so unless you plan to return the unit though, as if you ever need to do stuff to your system (even factory restore) then you'd need to unlock again, which would factory reset again.

The 1.55 update doesn't appear to want to install properly for me from Google Play. Is this an issue of having the OTA fix installed?
Nevermind...i guess i needed to reboot...but, this does beg the question, is there anything related to the OTA fix that needs to be "uninstalled" in general?

Upgraded to 4.4.2 - Need to root again, please help

Hi,
I just joined the forums this evening. This is my first post.
Basically I want to figure out how to re-root my (2013) Nexus 7 which I just updated to 4.4.2.
I installed 4.4 and had to re-root, of course losing all my settings and apps, having to reinstall and reset everything to my liking.
I have never made a backup.
I just now upgraded to 4.4.2 update, and all my settings and apps are in tact, however, I lost root.
I do not want to re-root and reinstall everything again, so I need help on recovery and steps involved.
I am still unlocked, and I have the TWRP installed as well as SuperSU and RecoveryTools.
Please advise how to make a backup and re-root in the least painful way.
(PS I did use the Wug'sFresh kit to do my rooting the first time around, and am not very comfortable using the SDK etc)
Thanks!
-Mike

Hi,
It is very frustrating I want to be able to keep all my apps/settings and configurations after root, but I don't know how.
I think there is an app that allows you to keep your root after upgrades, but I haven't really figured out which way to do things.
Any pros out there who can help?
Everything is fine on my tablet right now, just the way I like it BESIDES being unrooted.

have you tried flashing the SuperSU zip in recovery? should be all you need to do to get root back. dont need to lose any data. just re-enable root apps aka grant root permissions when they pop up.

Hi efan3719:
I don't have the zip in my SDcard but SuperSU is installed, but when I tap on it it says I need root access, and when I tap on Recover Tools > flash TWRP it says "need root" as well..
Should I download SuperSU zip latest file version and copy it over to my device and then run it using my file explorer?
Sorry, I may be confusing I'm still learning this stuff.

download SuperSU from here http://download.chainfire.eu/370/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip, put it on your device. reboot to recovery, flash the supersu zip. reboot. you should now be rooted.
:/
I have the zip file now on my device.
However, when I reboot into recovery TeamWin no longer comes up it goes to dead android character with exclamation point. :/
Try the nexus root toolkit. It makes rooting very easy with great step by step instructions.

I have that program. I used it to do my original unlock and root.
Can I re-root using that without losing my latest update/and settings?
I cannot boot into Recovery Mode to reinstall SuperSU (which I currently have installed on my system but it won't work when I tap on it because it says I require root).
So I cannot install the SuperSu zip I just placed onto my device.
This is confusing.
Okay I used Wugs again and looks like I am re-rooted.

Hi,
basically I had my Nexus 7 (2013) upgraded to KitKat 4.4.2 using the automatic (wi-fi) over the air update.
it installed fine but caused me to lose root. no other information was lost, all my apps and settings were the same, i simply lost root.
when you lose root, you are no longer able to access TWRP during the bootloader startup by going into recover mode. it will show a dead Android character.
so I simply connected my Nexus to my pc and (having Wug's Root Tookit and Nexus 7 drivers already installed from my first time rooting) I selected (from Wug's drop down menu - when Wug's program starts up) my build and version.. then it did it's magic and downloaded the pertinent files. (of course you need to have USB DeBugging checked in settings > developer options or whatever..
then i selected Root option and 'install custom recover' check box as well.. and let it do its thing.
TWRP started up automatically during reboot, and did the root.. then my Nexus was all good again, all apps and data in tact, with root. all good.
Hope that helps.

Yes you should just be able to use WuGFresh's nexus root toolkit to update n7 4.4.2 update
The app won't have a 4.4.2 option but you can just select root any version and it will still be able to root your n7 running 4.4.2
