After some water exposal, bottom hardware buttons (along with optical trackball) refused to work.
I have fixed them with some precise inside cleaning, but the optical function (not the button himself) continues malfunctioning, which is not a big deal for me, but..
The exact problem: i spotted in dark environment, that the sensor inside continuously glimmers in all modes - scren-off, scren-on (without puting finger over him), etc.. In return, my battery drains extra aprox. 10-12 mA!
I have observed, that in healthy device, sessor glimms only when interacting with him..
Is there a chance to disable this sensor to avoid this? I hope in software manner
I don't think there is anything out there that will disable the optical pad. You could give HTC a call or your carrier and see what they say.
There is this thread on the forums about turning off the backlights.
Should work for trackball as well? Probably. Something about LED Hack on the first or second page. Seems to be something on the 3rd page as well.
Go have a read over here (I just skimmed. its 2am lol) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704977
@formformer
If you tell me your kernel version I will try to build a kernel without trackpad support!?
@Meaple 's post was sadly adequate and rips best hope in me ;( ..
@eden2812 I have using 2 led hacks from previous attempts to minimize energy consumption & eye comfort, and they shurely don't do the "trackpad sensor shutting" job..
@AndroidJaspie
it's so damn cool to offer this kind of experience. salute!
i have likely using latest Ginger Villain's compilation, but any recent rom-kernel set, with weak appetite fits my best.
i will be very patient to hear from you..
my current setup is:
OK I built a new kernel from the cyanogenmod sources now without trackball support. I tested it with GingerVillain 1.4 and it worked.
please make a backup and then give the update.zip a try.
Tell me if the new kernel solved your problem or not.
Jasper
Yes Jasper, obviously the sensor is shutted (no glimmering observes) and the xtra drain is all gone now!! I'm so pleased.
But i have found, that the bottom buttons (including the button under the optical trackpad) not waking the phone any more. Is this issue related?
And another, not so important question: Would be this kernel compliant with other Gingerbread releases? or.. could you give me some hint, if is possible to transform your "surgery" into a some kind of a patch, that will give me opportunity to enjoy any feature kernel/roms?
Again, BIG 10x for your respond in this custom problem so far! You make my life happier
karel
No problem i like it to work with things like that. So it's a good chance to improve my knowledge about linux and help other people at the same time.
Are you talking about the all buttons or only about the button around the optical sensor?
If you are talking about the one around the sensor then it's normal that it won't wake up the phone any more. But the others(home, menu, back and search) should work like before.
This kernel works only with cyanogenmod and GingerVillain. On other rom's like Oxygen it doesn't work. But you i can compile you the kernel you want.
At the moment it's only possible to disable the trackball only by editing the kernel configuration. But i will try to get it working without changing the kernel so that you can use every kernel you want.
Jasper
i told so, about the relation of shutted sensor and not working buton.., but yes, others buttons also not working in lockscreen-off mode, where they should or at least worked before. (volume butts still works for wakening..)
ps. a have barely no linux skills, but its interesting for me either!
and if editing & compiling is not so high level task, im going to try first steps right now!
Any way, disabling track sensor without editing kernel settings sounds like a dream..
k
hi, my fried
could you tell me, where in the config I can find the exact setting and how to change it?
hi
if you got the kernel source you can make menuconfig to configure the new kernel. To disable the trackball go to "Device Drivers" --> "Input device support" --> "Opticaljoystick". To disable the joystick press "n" to enable it press "y"
Don't know how to comile your own kernel?
here is a useful links that helped me, too:
-[HOW-TO] Build your own kernel package from source
huh.. 10x 4 the guides, they light me enough to get started week ago, but i get stuck just in the beginning (problems with MBR or something..). and at this moment i have absolute lack of time to deal with this interesting stuff. However.. can i have one more last ask from you: to compile for me an updated kernel.. (they says he has the ability to record 2way call conversations..)
Using the Ginger Villain rom, suppose with this richardtrip kernel. Guess CM will worx too..
Thanks anyway!
ok
a bit late but here it is
a new kernel version 2.6.37.2 from the richardtrip-sources.
kernel features:
-disabled trackball
I don't know anything about "Two-way call recording kernel support" but i will try to find out as much as posible to configure a kernel with it.
jasper
Hi AndroidJaspie, i've the same problem with the optical trackball of my desire. I use the miui rom with the kernel 2.6.37.6-cyanogenmod-g8913be8. Can i use the kernel in your last post? thx bye
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Sorry for not being able to be more specific in the title, but my question is this: What exactly is the outcome of this kernel ****storm? With the CM team doing something which makes it hard for kernel developers to adapt?
Let's say one flashes CM9 and some custom kernel which has an app for controlling its settings, say GLaDOS, Trinity or Franco. Now, using these three kernels takes away the ability to modify kernel settings through the CM menus, but if one is using said kernel control app, then what difference does it make if the settings aren't available in the CM menus?
Also, I get it that no nug reports are accepted if one is using this mix, but since when did the CM team ever accept bug reports for nightly builds? I don't think I've ever had a single problem running a custom kernel with CM9 seeing as how I've always utilized some sort of kernel control app (and a few bucks for it isn't much of a hassle)
Can anyone shed some light on this? What are your experiences?
I would love to hear some answers on this as well. I kind-of have a love affair with franco.Kernel right now.
Its the same as carriers do it "If you dont use the software they gave you, you get no warranty". They don't know what you did with the phone, or what you flashed, or what could possibly be broken in the rom, so if you don't have the software the way they intended, they can't/won't help you.
Same applies with CM9, if you don't use the kernel they made/gave you, then they don't know if the issues you might have are because of a bug in the rom, or a bug in th kernel. Its hard work as it is to develop roms, tracking down bugs due to user choice/error is far harder and time consuming.
Basically, if you want to submit bug reports/make sure all the features of CM9 (any custom rom really), then use what you are given. No one forces you to use their rom, nor use a different kernel. With freedom of use, come other restrictions.

Ezekeel brought it to everyone's attention with this thread.
Please excuse my ignorance. I'm completely new to Flashing RoMs.
I'm just wondering because I would like to try out CM due to the amount of people who highly respect it and I would like to be able to see it for myself, although I really do enjoy the sleeping screen gestures on the stock C-OS and have found myself using them alot so would like to be able to use them with CM.
Thanks!

Right now: Custom gestures (no) - no custom firmware supports these yet.
The "fixed" gestures (circle for camera, V for torch, double tap to wake) are supported by nearly all community firmwares. (Omni is missing music next/last as I haven't had time to fix that.)
gestures find 7
is it an idea to port the gesture apk thats running under ColorOS, the reason i ask is cause i would love to use CM 12 but the missing custom gestures is for me a reason to stick on colorOS for now
In colorOS im using Custom gesture Version : V1.01.1849_140612.R18655_140806 (screen on gestures)
and even more important :
BlackGestureCustom V1.0_1032_140825.R22548_140910
if someone would be able to port these aplications i would leave ColorOS forever
here is a list of APKs i found within the ColorOS Rom
OppoGestureEngine.apk
OppoGestureServer.apk
OppoGestureUI.apk
Folks,
Besides ColorOS, is anyone aware of any of the AOSP ROMs that support the voice wake-up feature natively? I'm not referring to the Hotword detection feature "OK Google" which requires you to be on your launcher - I'm referring to a state where the phone is in sleep mode where its using a dedicated processor (similar to Moto X) to listen to a trigger word. I understand that ColorOS has this coded as "Hey Snapdragon".
Just wanted to check-in to see if this is being actively developed for any of the other ROMs or whether anyone has some timelines associated for its development.
Thank you,
Mash
Bump.
Hoping @Entropy512 will be looking into this now that we are close to nightlies on OmniRom.

I've been wanting to take a look at this for some time, but just have been too busy/burned out to look at it so far. It SHOULD in theory be possible, but honestly, I'd prefer to wait until xplodwild finishes his current "special project" before I start, since he has experience with SVA. Also maxwen is working on doing a lot of updating of Omni's audio HALs, so probably best if he finishes fixing offload first.
So in short - not even the slightest chance I'll even start looking at it until I return from vacation. But who knows, max might take a look, he's a freaking beast that never sleeps.
Are there any of the Lollipop builds in which the S-Pen has functionality other than being just a regular stylus or pointing device?
First of all, the only function of the SPen is to work as a stylus(Active digitizer). Everything else is a rom feature/functionality implemented by an app, not the pen.
Answering your question; sadly, not completely:
- Even the acclaimed rayman cyangenmod cm12.1 still lacks pen functionalities as it doesn't recognizes the eraser on more professional wacom pens(even from Samsung ones dedicated to our tablet specifically).
- Temask Rom is doing a very good work adding some personalization to the possible pen gestures and behaviors but nothing as far as creating an stylus experience as Samsung does with all the apps Samsung brings to the table.
- As far as i know, only touchwiz based roms have those stylus dedicated apps you are searching for as part of the rom.
The thing is, installing Roms such as CM or Temask CM is done to get rid of the Samsung Touchwiz environment with all its gimicks and features. People that flash this kind of roms are searching for, at least for now, a nexus tablet that has a digitizer to draw/sketch. I get that some Samsung features are useful, but many of us think that the lot of them makes the device lagy and only a low percentage are worth it.
This said, there are only two options, your feature needs are covered by third party apps, which are very rare, or you have to stay with touchwiz based roms.
To give you a list of the third party apps that are available visit this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2641400
Check if they cover your needs to see if changing roms is worth it for you. :good:
What we can hope for the feature:
If we can get an app on cyanogenmod source to add better API for the stylus(Attach/Detach Gestures, On/Off Digitizer, Hover+ButtonClick, Double Tap, Tap/Button Click, etc) developers would be able to make marvels out of it and make apps that compare and surpass Samsung implementation for features(Quicker, personalized and not making the device laggy); most importantly making it universal for any rom based on CM(Which are a lot). Currently we have CM SPen Addon: the downsides: you have to pay to get all the features and if you make an app out of it, the user would have to download 2 apps or more to make it work.
There is also a great project here in xda, beta status, that is trying to add some functionalities such as the action menu and screenshot noting. I dont know how it is going because i am not a beta tester of it but looks promising. The downside again, even if they do it incredibly well; the project doesn't add anything to the table for a "universal" API so it is not going to make more apps "pop up" for the device, you are stuck relying on them for more solutions. If anyone had the link, please post it.
I hope I took into perspective what non Touchwiz roms are at the moment, what they are going to be in the near future and what they can be if things play well. :good:
Thanks for all of the information. Definitely something to think about. The feature of the touchwiz roms that I use is the s-pen functionality. The rest of it I don't care for and I freeze as much as I can.

Yep, that i why i use cm. I would barely use touchwiz features and they would lag a lot when i did so i stopped using them. I changed to cm and i have never looked back. The only thing is that GPU is not optimized optimized at the moment so some things show graphical glitches and stuff. Don't know i that is going to get fixed soon, or ever for that matter. I use this tablet as a netflix-notebook machine and it works just fine.

There is also LiquidSmooth. It has the same S-Pen features as temasek ROM but it is based on Slim ROM which is very battery efficient. Only feature I miss from TW is multi window, but this is made better by the stylus gestures.

So pen presure sensitivity is not implied in such custom ROMS as it is in Touchwiz?
Pen accurate location detección on and over screen, tilt sensitivity and preassure sensitivity ranging from 1 to 0 are hardware-driver based. If the ROM got the drivers and your machine has the digitizer functioning correctly, it is going to work as well as it is intended to. Furthermore, your ROM could or could not implement OS-wide functions to make a better and seamless experience for you and complementing apps. And last but not least, your ROM(like touchwiz) could add unique apps to give a better or worse experience.
TL;DR: You can have a working spen without touchwiz.
