Hi,
I was wondering if anyone in Toronto area would know a place to buy the HTC Desire Z that isn't from Bell?
Or if it is from Bell, contains no Bell software (unbranded) and is unlocked?
I've been looking and haven't had any luck.
and has anyone noticed that Rogers is falling behind in the phone model area? Their phones are kind of getting outdated...
Thanks!
I uphave one unlocked with rogers....yeh there wayy behimd in terms of android. I suggest checking out kijiji.com or look at ebay or craigslist. If all else fails pm me and ill find you some online.

I purchased an unlocked/unbranded Desire Z on Ebay to use in the states on the AT&T network. It was a North American Version which had the correct 3G bands for ATT. Had a good seller and good experience but the phone was quite pricey. They go for anywhere between $550 and $650 US.
I would suggest buying it from Bell via FutureShop or BestBuy.
You don't have to get a plan if you do that, plus they offer their extended warranties which still cover you if you root the phone, etc (though you should still make it appear stock).
You can flash the official WWE ROM which is basically stock HTC Sense. It won't have the Bell apps, and you don't need to root or anything to flash the WWE ROM (I think). You just need to make a 'goldcard' which is just a specially formatted SD card.

Yeah I was gonna buy one from Bell, but I don't know any trustworthy sites I can buy the unlock code from, which was why I opened this thread, but anyone here know one?

Be careful, because G2 owners have found big problems when they unlock their phones, like not being able to connect to any network after that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835673
Cellunlock.net with the code bbrocks50 for half price. You can find the phone listed a couple different ways. Either by first looking up htc or by first looking up bell. One is chapter than the other. I paid 15.
Zero issues unlocking. I think the issues are limited to g2.
I'm unlocked with Telus currently..and I used HTCsimUnlowNow.com. Seemed to work fine..the only thing was it was initially $15, but then I had to send them another $10 (after paying the 15) because of the Bell carrier or some excuse. So far i've had no problems..and i'm even able to use my BB data plan with the HTC despite Telus telling me it most likely wouldnt work lol.
I was wondering if I'm able to remove Bell's software using a program (TitaniumBackup, for example) or do I have to go through that whole process of flashing this and that to unbrand it?
And how bothersome is the Bell software?
..Although I'm gonna do it anyway but I don't have time right now to mod the phone.
You need root and it takes a lot of time to do it with titanium. It's easier to flash the wwe rom. But the apps aren't too annoying. The lack of htc locations is annoying
To elaborate on my last msg (which I wrote in a rush)..
It's more painful and takes longer to remove the apps manually as you need to root and then use Titanium's force remove method, one by one, which reboots the phone each time and takes forever.
Alternatively you could root and then S-OFF and delete those apps with the root file manager.
Or, the easiest/quickest way imho is to borrow/make a goldcard, download the euro HTC Sync, the WWE Rom, and run the ROM install program. It does the rest of the work for you
I was gonna go buy the phone today but Bell won't sell it unless I go on a plan.
I called up several different places, all the same reply, they won't let the phone go unless it's going out with a plan.
Does anyone know where I could buy it in and around Toronto?

I asked at our local Best Buy (Oshawa) yesterday and they said they can sell the phone without a plan, no problem.
I bought mine today, you can buy it at WirelessWave or Telephone booth for the retail price.
I did notice the timestamp on the text messages are incorrect though, does anyone else have this problem?
I bought mine brand new on ebay for $375, t-mobile branded.. paid $15 to unlock it.
I suggest watching for a cheap one on ebay, maybe even try to bargain with some sellers.

I suggest not buying from bell, or anything that is compatible with bell, unless you need it for ATT US or in Australia. Reason is that they use the wrong frequencies for use in Canada and would lock you to ROBELUS (the old evil phone companies). The US version of the vision is better... still compatible with robbers, but also with the best things that have happened to telecommunications in canada.... ever.
It sounds like we should start an exchange:
T-Mobile/Wind compatible phones exchanged for Bell/Telus/Rogers/AT&T compatible phones...
I'm on AT&T and I'd love to find the Bell Desire Z for purchase at a reasonable price. All the prices I've seen are ~$650 but the phones retail price is $500. Maybe I'm just not used to Canadian taxes... can my Canadian brethren enlighten this ignorant American as to how much the phone would cost unsubsidized after taxes?
You can get them straight from Bell for $565, with tax (13% on 499.95). If you look on kijiji and CL you can get them anywhere from $400-$500.
I bought mine yesterday for $480, no tax, and factory unlocked. It was brand new and sealed and came with a receipt for the warranty.
A lot of people are fooled into paying $600-$650 for an unlocked phone because sellers try to tell them that it costs $80-$100 to unlock it. But if people would take the time to look they would find you can get it unlocked for $25.

You can get it locked for free now, thanks to the fantastic work of scotty. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857390
I'm on Rogers and I'm having a heck of a time trying to find out. Everyone wants to charge an arm and a leg. Trying to trade my Xperia X10 and some cash for a Desire Z.
Sup guys,
Which M8 version would you buy, developers or just the unlock version if you were gonna buy the phone outright. I'm leaning towards the developer version with the unlock bootloader but I also like the resell my device after 15 months or so.

do you care for sense? I thought sense is worth it so i bought the regular version. If you want stock android than get the developer version....
Get unlocked version. Updates are just as fast. I think the dev edition was more money and you can unlock boot loader easily with HTC.dev account
Get whatever is cheaper. U can get whatever GsM version and convert it to GPE edition or Dev edition. Get it from a carrier imo cheaper

Do you care about warranty? (is there even some on the Dev edition?)
I would get the normal one, claim the 50gb (now 50 extra gb, so 100 gb total) Drive storage for 2 years, Unlock it by yourself, and then chose if you want a Sense 6 custom rom, or a GPE Rom.
That way you get 100 gb drive (i mean, why not? thats still 48 dollar saved ), and can have both, sense and GPE. And i pretty enjoy sense, its features are so nice, i dont even want to go back to GPE or CM~^^
Hi guys,
A friend of mine will be in the states during early / mid June. so I was thinking in pulling the trigger and ask him to buy me the unlocked version of the new htc 10.
I began to look for a place where my friend could buy the phone, but it seems that it's not able to purchase from retailers in the unlocked variant?
Buying it online an get it shipped to him it's out of question since my friend won't stay in a specific place for more than 1 or 2 days...
Any buying advice / tips over this?
Thanks,

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. As Geoff said I need a store where my friend could locally pick up the device...
I repeat myself, my friend is visiting USA for a business trip, he's not capable of managing his schedule. However, he can drop by Any local store near him to buy me the device.
If there are not any retailer from where he can buy the phone at the moment then I guess I'll look for another device

You just buy their HTC 10, since you're buying it full price they should SIM unlock it for you. After that you need to S-Off etc... to put the US Unlocked Firmware on it.

sorry to be so insistent about this but, what would be to s-off? Sing off?
I'm switching from iOS (so I'm kinda noob about android lol) and I'm not from US. So the phone would be used in other countries. Will I have any trouble with that going this way?

Pay full price, then call their customer service for the sim unlock code. I don't think you'll get it at the store. Or you can buy the unlocked US version from HTC which is fully compatible with T-Mobile.

Aren't VZW phones still unlocked if so that would probably be the best best then unlock, s-off, flash unlocked ruu.
Buy from HTC online store... There is a discount code floating around somewhere that is (apparently) still active that'll give you $100 off...
I would say just order it to one of the places he'll be at and when he gets to that certain place he can just pick it up. Swappa is your friend since some people add goodies with the phone, idk, just a suggestion. There are no HTC stores to just get the unlocked variant like that sadly.
FYI, the HTC.com offer with promo code HTC1008 (100$ off) is not working anymore ...
you cant just walk in a store in the US and get the unlocked version like the HTC.com website. Best you can do is get the tmobile or at&t version and flash the US unlocked RUU found here on XDA.

Camellia Red, Topaz Gold, Carbon Gray exclusive to HTC.com
Camellia Red and Topaz Gold will begin shipping in early October.
What are the odds I could convince HTC to send me a Camellia Red Unlocked phone to replace my Carbon Grey Unlocked phone when I apply for the Uh-Oh protection? I could wait 2 months with a damaged camera lens to get a Red model. I loved my red M8.
Other colors won't start shipping until October. Kind of like the A9, a fiasco, and 2 $100 credits I ended up getting with them due to delays on shipping. I can wait, and hope they can't deliver, and get more credits!
Now if I can get my credit reinstated of $100 that expired for whatever reason. HTC support is so slow!!!
Sucks that it's only for USA, that red one looks really good!

It's not US only @Chad_Petree it should be available in each country where HTC.com sells phones directly to consumers.
For example the discounted price (-15%) is 594,15€ for Finland, Sweden and Denmark at least.
Germany is 568,65€
UK 484.49£
France, Spain, Ireland, and Italy 636,65€
And so on. Don't have the time to check more countries..
Edit: Pfft, nvm, that was an old message to the original offer. Should learn to read.

I wish someone would tell verizon that now all phones have to work on all networks lol, because you have to do mods on the Unlocked 10 to get it to work on verizon and if you want volte to work you have to fully convert your unlocked version to a verizon version and verizon still will not accept and activate your unlocked 10 imei on their network, you have to activate your verizon sim in a verizon phone then put that sim in your unlocked 10. FCC should get verizon to stop this crap or start fining them.

In the end of your statement you said that you have to activate a verizon sim in a verizon phone...and then put that sim in the unlocked 10? I actually bought the Verizon HTC 10 not knowing any of this until I called Verizon to activate and the guy told me I could have just bought the unlocked version from HTC.com where I purchased the phone. He was actually really helpful. Most of the time when I talk to the folks at Verizon they're knowledgeable enough to know what they have to do. My question is: why do you need to go through the hassle of activating the SIM in a Verizon phone first? They have to accept the unlocked version. You might have to use a Verizon SIM which only makes sense to be honest. But those are free at the corporate Verizon Wireless stores...not the Wireless Zones and the Radioshack's of the country. I don't even think RS sells Verizon anymore.
I'm just pissed that I bought the Verizon variant. HTC.com should know better and just sell the unlocked version saying it works on all carriers. The Google Pixel coming out doesn't have special variants. Just one phone that works for all! Yes Verizon has an "exclusivity" partnership with them but I don't see the benefits for Verizon. Unless people pre-order through Verizon where there's more of a supply...and probably some ****ty bloatware that you can get rid of in a snap. I just got my HTC 10 on Thursday. I've already rooted it and unlocked it with s-off. I'm trying to find someone with the Android Nougat 7.x firmware but the people that do won't give it out and I definitely understand why. I can still return the HTC 10 within 30 days, and then buy the Google Pixel XL once they've depleted the pre-order stock. I've been loyal to HTC since the Thunderbolt days though. That's a long time.
So to answer your comment -- Verizon reps know they have to activate the unlocked version. But they can still require a Verizon SIM or I could have just taken the one out of my M8 I still have if they were that intense. Do you see any benefit with Google and Verizon being partners on this? It doesn't make any sense when you can order the phone through Google.com anyway.

Unless something has changed ? The unlocked 10 to be used on verizon has to have the verizon radio flashed to it which requires s-off to stick and root access.

@afuller42 You either have to buy the 32gb or the 128gb and that's it. There's no microSD slot in the Google Pixel series phones.
I got this phone on amazon for 110$ us then seen it on ebay for around 65$ only after I orded it.
regardless the oem boot loader is grayed out.
its a gsm unlocked works fine with my tmobel sim.
came with stock 7.1 tryed to unlock then upgraded to 8.1 still grayed out and now 10.0 still grayed out.
If the boot loader cant be unlocked I most likely will send it back thanks for you time
Sounds like it is a Verizon/unlocked model and they indeed do have encrypted boatloaders. If you had stayed on the old version of android you were on when you got it I believe there's a Verizon unlock boatloader thread here on XDA but it has to be on an older version of Android to work.
I bought my XL off eBay for $135 new a few months ago. Its confusing because some people that aren't like us XDA peeps, they don't fully understand the whole unlocked deal and most don't know wth a bootloader is or if they have Verizon unlocked model or also over on pixel 2 and 2xl eveb the refurnished units from Google have encrypted boatloaders and the thing isn't even greyed out but it won't unlock because they're encrypted as well. I've seen several reports of this on here, reditt and on Google's own help site people tripping out because they received replacement devices that had the encrypted bootloaders. I'd be sooooooo pissed!! If you run some fastboot commands and it can't be unlocked, if you end up not being able to return it and want one that doesn't have the locked down bootloader od throw it on swappa and sell it and get one. Swappa is cool because many of the people there are here in the forums or have been and they known what they have. Good luck. Sorry that happened to you man. It gave me anxiety after I looked for a month for a decent deal and read all the reports all over the internet.
There are Verizon Pixel & XL that are carrier unlocked but still have the locked bootloader and work on some gsm carriers. This sounds like it may be the case with yours. I'd throw it on a cord and type in the unlock fastboot command anyway just to see.

Np. All Android devices come with the bootloader locked and if the carrier that the device was sold on doesn't make their models to have the extra security, with an encrypted bootloader to where it's impossible to unlock the bootloader for anyone except the one who encrypted it, in this case the carrier.. I've never heard of a device that had the encrypted bootloader being unencrypted by request from user on whatever carrier the device came from. If they're encrypted, unless someone else finds a work around, and it would be here somewhere if they did,,, then they stay locked and can't be rooted.
Verizon devices that they sell CANNOT be bootloader unlocked because that's how they decided to sell their phones. Almost all Android's sold by USA carriers are that way these days with the exception of many Motorola/Lonovo devices and a few others in the mix here and there.
I had a moto g6 Play (Boost mobile) before my Pixel XL (which I named Jesus because it saved me ??) and my G6 Play had a quad core 1.4 GHz CPU while all other models of the same phone had an eight core chips Boost sold the runt and I was in a hurry the day I purchased it and the lady at Boost shook her head when I walked in the store and told her what I wanted she confirmed that it had an eight core CPU and me being in such a hurry that day grabbed it, paid and left only to find out later it was laggy and the lady in the store had no clue about what I said or wasn't paying attention just shook her head as I talked.. lol. So after I unlocked the BL and rooted it with good ole TWRP recovery & Magisk I was then able to debloat it and take off like 30-40 apps, all kinds of sales trash, then the lag almost went away and it made it at least usable thanks to the great work of PHH on GSI roms and everyone else who participates in the GSI development. So you gotta really watch for these CDMA USA carriers because they're the ones who have many phones with specs cut down in half like that.. I'll never buy anything but Pixel and OnePlus again! Too much headache and to me in my opinion those are the best devices.
It's become a real mission these days to purchase a good Android device that doesn't have an encrypted bootloader because that's the way most carriers sell them so the only way to go is buying factory unlocked and confirming that the device can indeed be bootloader unlocked before purchase. Thing is many people who sell phones online don't care to answer a question like that and they buy their phones in bulk and half of them don't know what the heck they have. lol.. A good phone salesman knows what we mean when we say the word "bootloader." They're like, "Aaaah hell another one of those xda rooting tech gurus." ?? Back in the day almost all Android's could be bootloader unlocked by user if they wanted to. Now it's a mess of confusion for those who want to mod their device.
