Hi guys,
A friend of mine will be in the states during early / mid June. so I was thinking in pulling the trigger and ask him to buy me the unlocked version of the new htc 10.
I began to look for a place where my friend could buy the phone, but it seems that it's not able to purchase from retailers in the unlocked variant?
Buying it online an get it shipped to him it's out of question since my friend won't stay in a specific place for more than 1 or 2 days...
Any buying advice / tips over this?
Thanks,

you can buy unlocked version from htc store USA, it will cost 699 usd

That doesn't really help him as he wants to buy it in a store. If he wanted it shipped he could just order it online.

This does not give you SIM unlock though, or does it?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. As Geoff said I need a store where my friend could locally pick up the device...
I repeat myself, my friend is visiting USA for a business trip, he's not capable of managing his schedule. However, he can drop by Any local store near him to buy me the device.
If there are not any retailer from where he can buy the phone at the moment then I guess I'll look for another device

You just buy their HTC 10, since you're buying it full price they should SIM unlock it for you. After that you need to S-Off etc... to put the US Unlocked Firmware on it.

sorry to be so insistent about this but, what would be to s-off? Sing off?
I'm switching from iOS (so I'm kinda noob about android lol) and I'm not from US. So the phone would be used in other countries. Will I have any trouble with that going this way?

Pay full price, then call their customer service for the sim unlock code. I don't think you'll get it at the store. Or you can buy the unlocked US version from HTC which is fully compatible with T-Mobile.

Aren't VZW phones still unlocked if so that would probably be the best best then unlock, s-off, flash unlocked ruu.
Buy from HTC online store... There is a discount code floating around somewhere that is (apparently) still active that'll give you $100 off...
I would say just order it to one of the places he'll be at and when he gets to that certain place he can just pick it up. Swappa is your friend since some people add goodies with the phone, idk, just a suggestion. There are no HTC stores to just get the unlocked variant like that sadly.
FYI, the HTC.com offer with promo code HTC1008 (100$ off) is not working anymore ...
you cant just walk in a store in the US and get the unlocked version like the HTC.com website. Best you can do is get the tmobile or at&t version and flash the US unlocked RUU found here on XDA.

Hey guys,
i'm thinking of getting a t-mobile g2 handset. i've found one online, refurbished, for a cheap price. my question is do i need to activate the handset? i'm going to use it in europe and since i'm not in the usa now a friend will bring the handset to me.
a friend here is a dev and the company he works in got 2 phones from the states shipped. they had to activate them and it cost them 50 dollars each because they are no in the states, t-mobile said that it's free if it had been done in the us..

i think activating phones are for the prepaid feature phones that are locked to your carrier. you activate them to beable to use your carriers network and they often charge you 10$ for it. im not sure but i dont think you need to activate your phone

The link is dead. The Desire Z or G2 is an excellent phone, just don't pay more than 200 or so for a refurb. Even if the phone comes branded, running gfree to get root and s-off will also set the CID: 111111111111 so it will be sim/carrier unlocked once you're done.

Activation is only when you're buying a phone at a carrier, and the activation isn't on the phone per se, but rather activating the line on the carrier to work with the phone. There's no activation required to use the phone though. Just unlock it (either with rooting or buying a code) then pop your international SIM in it.

Oh wow I wasn't aware of that. I bought the dev edition straight from HTC instead of going through AT&T so that I could avoid all of the carrier bloatware., but I didn't realize that they also lock down the bootloader. Verizon and AT&T are really POS carriers. They either lock you into a 2 year contract for a subsidized phone or make you pay full price for the phone over 12-18 months and then lock down the bootloader so you can't actually own your device. My advice, unless you have Verizon (HTC doesn't sell a CDMA unlocked phone), buy directly from HTC and you can do the bill me later option with Paypal and then just pay for it over a year. We need to stop giving carriers our money until they actually change their ridiculous practices.

what's the difference in paying the carrier for the device over a period of time or giving it all to htc at once? You don't actually think the carriers are going to give you a discount do you?
I will give you that the locked bootloader is annoying I don't believe we're providing enough $$ to verizon to make a difference.

That's the whole point, if you do the ATT Next plan or the equivalent plan for Verizon, you will pay the full price of the phone over 12-18 months (depending on which plan you choose), but they give you a phone with a locked bootloader and a SIM lock. If you go through HTC though, you will pay full price (obviously), but you can opt to do bill me later with PayPal and pay it off over a year with no interest. By going through HTC though, you can get a SIM unlocked phone and if you go with the dev edition, the bootloader comes unlocked (no need to go through HTC Dev). Unfortunately for Verizon users, if you want a CDMA phone that has an unlocked bootloader, then you'd need to buy an unlocked (SIM) HTC One M9 from Sprint and then unlock the bootloader via HTC Dev since HTC doesn't sell CDMA phones themselves. To be honest, I'm never going to buy a carrier branded phone again. They come with too much bloatware, they're sim locked, and you have to wait for the carrier to push software updates. In summary, it's ridiculous that carriers allow you to buy a phone, but not really own it.

This looks like an old thread but just to clarify there are exploits we can use a Java Card to unlock just find someone nearest you in the Verizon HTC One M9 Java Card thread. We have s-off and root. (just in case someone new see's this thread)
Firstly, apologies if this is already answered somewhere, but I have searched both on XDA and Google and can't find a definitive answer.
I'm considering getting this device as an upgrade, but can't seem to find out if the M9 handsets directly supplied by EE UK have officially unlockable bootloaders or not. They have a nasty habit of permanently locking bootloaders/blocking unlocking by official means and the ability to unlock is essential to me, so it's a deal breaker if they're permanently locked.
Any answer from someone that has an EE supplied handset would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yeah, I'm reading that you need s-off to flash other regions firmware. I haven't had an HTC device since the original Desire, so I'm out of the loop.
I assume there's a guide to all this in the general section somewhere, so I've got some reading to do before ordering.

I know you should avoid getting Sony handsets from EE or any retailer except for three as they have their boatloaders locked out. Htc on the other hand is fine and should always be.

That is lucky, for me I inadvertently did a work around.
With my Z1 I flashed the DRM partition (can't remember it's name) anyway, i ended up with a brick, wouldn't even charge, so instead of sending it back through EE, i sent it back through carphone warehouse, good thing is, I got a brand new boxed z1 in black instead of white (which is what i wanted) and not an EE version of the device so i could unlock it fully, best thing about it all is it came back in 3 days
Hi, I was intending of getting a Pay as Go sim while in USA for my M9 but now that the 10 is out I thought I might get one whilst out there. Do you think the 10 will be readily available {July 8th - 27} and do I go for a unlocked version and get a Pay as Go sim or a carrier based one and unlock later.
My personal preference would be to purchase the unlocked version. Unfortunately, it would be unlikely that you would be able to find an unlocked version in a retail store, but time will tell if any retail stores will offer it. (It should be available through the HTC web site by then.) You would probably be stuck with getting a carrier branded model. (T-Mobile would be the GSM variant here in the United States.)

Sorry. Just waiting around for my 10 to ship and trying to avoid work right now.
Two BestBuy reps claimed they would be carrying/able to order unlocked HTC 10's. I hope so, because I spent my saved phone cash on my wedding. If they do not carry it, I'll be forced into an unlocked S7.

Camellia Red, Topaz Gold, Carbon Gray exclusive to HTC.com
Camellia Red and Topaz Gold will begin shipping in early October.
What are the odds I could convince HTC to send me a Camellia Red Unlocked phone to replace my Carbon Grey Unlocked phone when I apply for the Uh-Oh protection? I could wait 2 months with a damaged camera lens to get a Red model. I loved my red M8.
Other colors won't start shipping until October. Kind of like the A9, a fiasco, and 2 $100 credits I ended up getting with them due to delays on shipping. I can wait, and hope they can't deliver, and get more credits!
Now if I can get my credit reinstated of $100 that expired for whatever reason. HTC support is so slow!!!
Sucks that it's only for USA, that red one looks really good!

For example the discounted price (-15%) is 594,15€ for Finland, Sweden and Denmark at least.
Germany is 568,65€
UK 484.49£
France, Spain, Ireland, and Italy 636,65€
And so on. Don't have the time to check more countries..
Edit: Pfft, nvm, that was an old message to the original offer. Should learn to read.

I wish someone would tell verizon that now all phones have to work on all networks lol, because you have to do mods on the Unlocked 10 to get it to work on verizon and if you want volte to work you have to fully convert your unlocked version to a verizon version and verizon still will not accept and activate your unlocked 10 imei on their network, you have to activate your verizon sim in a verizon phone then put that sim in your unlocked 10. In the end of your statement you said that you have to activate a verizon sim in a verizon phone...and then put that sim in the unlocked 10? I actually bought the Verizon HTC 10 not knowing any of this until I called Verizon to activate and the guy told me I could have just bought the unlocked version from HTC.com where I purchased the phone. He was actually really helpful. Most of the time when I talk to the folks at Verizon they're knowledgeable enough to know what they have to do. My question is: why do you need to go through the hassle of activating the SIM in a Verizon phone first? They have to accept the unlocked version. You might have to use a Verizon SIM which only makes sense to be honest. But those are free at the corporate Verizon Wireless stores...not the Wireless Zones and the Radioshack's of the country. I don't even think RS sells Verizon anymore.
I'm just pissed that I bought the Verizon variant. HTC.com should know better and just sell the unlocked version saying it works on all carriers. The Google Pixel coming out doesn't have special variants. Just one phone that works for all! Yes Verizon has an "exclusivity" partnership with them but I don't see the benefits for Verizon. Unless people pre-order through Verizon where there's more of a supply...and probably some ****ty bloatware that you can get rid of in a snap. I just got my HTC 10 on Thursday. I've already rooted it and unlocked it with s-off. I'm trying to find someone with the Android Nougat 7.x firmware but the people that do won't give it out and I definitely understand why. I can still return the HTC 10 within 30 days, and then buy the Google Pixel XL once they've depleted the pre-order stock. I've been loyal to HTC since the Thunderbolt days though. That's a long time.
So to answer your comment -- Verizon reps know they have to activate the unlocked version. But they can still require a Verizon SIM or I could have just taken the one out of my M8 I still have if they were that intense. Do you see any benefit with Google and Verizon being partners on this? It doesn't make any sense when you can order the phone through Google.com anyway.

You can still s-off unlock and root your verizon 10 just use the sunshine app its $25 but it frees your phone from verizons choke hold lol. Go to http://theroot.ninja and it lists it all out for you.

Unless something has changed ? The unlocked 10 to be used on verizon has to have the verizon radio flashed to it which requires s-off to stick and root access.

None of that is necessary per FCC regulations and law...but I didn't activate an unlocked 10 on the network. I'm pretty sure you just call them up with a Verizon SIM number associated with an IMEI that you want to use it on and that's it

Verizon never added the unlocked imei numbers to their network. Seriously this has been going on since it came out verizon wont do it and people did file complaints with FCC and verizon gets out of it.

I guess we'll find out. I don't really care personally. The only phone I'd get if I return the 10 is a phone in the Pixel series. I just wish they had expandable memory! But I like the 10 with Viper on it.

Its been since april. The unlocked 10 needs the verizon radio flashed to it, plus volte wont work unless you use the other thread which you flash the verizon ruu to an unlocked 10 then volte will work. Links below both go over all that. I also wish pixel had the sd card slot, but also stereo speakers instead of the one facing down speaker it does have also has no OIS.

@afuller42 You either have to buy the 32gb or the 128gb and that's it. There's no microSD slot in the Google Pixel series phones.
