Hi everybody,
I have a huge problem (for me anyway) and I can't find a solutions (i've searched for 2 hours now!). I hope somebody can help me.
I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S rooted. Basicly I wanted to transfer a big file on my SD Card. Without thinking i converted my Fat32 SD Card to NTFS with the command prompt in Windows XP. After converting I could still see all my files etc on my laptop.
When I disconnected the phone from my laptop, the phone couldn't recognize my SD card anymore and offers me to format it! So I figured I'd change it back, but I'm not able to connect the phone to my laptop trough USB, it just doesn't offer me the option.
When I insert the SD Card trough a MicroSD adaptor in my laptop, Windows won't recognize the disk either, and offers me to format it to a 512 byte disk - the SD Card is 16 GB.
I'm really freaking out now since there is alot of important documents and photos on the SD Card. Is there any way to force connect the SD Card trough the phone with the USB Cable? Since the files were available before disconnecting, i'm sure they're still there.
I tried 2 partition recovery programs (testdisk and File Scavenger) but they either recognize the Card as empty 512 or 1024 byte.
Is there any way I can format the SD Card back to Fat32 trough USB, or just even recover the files on it?
I hope my stupidity can be solved painless
Thanks in advance...
Didn't you make a back up of your files when you converted it to ntfs? Doesn't Windows normally format the card when you change its file system?

I have a feeling the SD card might've gotten partitioned... ie. you have two partitions on there now instead of just one. Open a command line with the with SD card connected to the computer, do this:
diskpart
list disk
select disk #(get the disk # from "list disk")
clean
That should get you back to a single-partition sd card.
Does windows give you any clues in the disk management section?
Right click > My computer > Manage > Disk Management
Download minitool partition wizard and then plug in your sd card and open the program. Then delete every single partition you see (ON THE SD AND NOT YOUR HARD DRIVES) and then click create a new partition and then format it to FAT32 and you are good to go !
Had the same problem with a flash drive
right click on drive > properties > readyboost > uncheck the box. Try to format the drive again.
Oh boy... The convert Fat32 to NTFS cannot be undone.
The tool was included with Windows XP for those Upgrading from Windows 98, who would still be runing FAT32 on their hard drives. It allowed them to upgrade to NTFS without loosing any data...
Unfortunately, the only way to get the card back is to Reformat it. I'd recommend the Command Prompt, and the Command would look like this...
Code:
Format /FS:FAT32 /X (drive letter):
The /FS switch tells Format.exe to format the specified drive in a specific file system. In this case, we're forcing it to setup a FAT32 partition on the disk.
The /X switch tells it to dismount the drive before formatting. This makes sure that nothing else is currently using the drive, so that nothing else can mess with the drive while Format is working with it.
After the drive is formatted, go download some decent data recovery software (I've always had good luck with iolo Search and Recover, but your mileage may vary) and have it scan the drive to recover your media.
Also... DO NOT MODIFY THE DRIVE IN ANY OTHER WAY! IF YOU WRITE ANYTHING TO THE DRIVE, COPY FILES TO IT, CREATE FILES ON IT, SAVE THINGS TO IT, YOU WILL LOOSE ANY DATA YOU PREVIOUSLY HAD ON THE DRIVE! Naturally, formatting the drive has a chance of doing this anyway, however, the automatically detected sector size should match the original sector size, so the chances of loosing everything are slim to nil. All hell breaks loose when you start adding and removing things from the drive...
Recently got my phone which runs through Kodoos and cant seem to find an answer online via HTC manual?
ive browsed several SDcard threads here on the forums and none seem to be covering my problem?

Try to format the card in pc using an incompatible format like ntfs and then put it in the phone and then the phone should ask you if you want to format the card. If not try to go to settings and format manually.

dude. just format the sdcard using your pc in FAT16 format. you can also try fat32 but I don't know how it plays with android.
cheers!
PS: after you format it using the above method, it's good to take the sdcard out from your phone and then put it back. just to be on the safe side

well...tried FAT16 and no luck?
im getting very frustrated at the thought of a phone that doesnt even see a simple SDcard when my PC does?
Well it might be some hardware issue. The phone does not recognize that sd card is in right? Does the phone show something when you plug in the card while the phone is on?
Did you try to put in other card?

nothing shows up when putting the card into the phone while it is on, but it does state SDCARD REMOVED when pulling it out from the phone
May be the SD card have some defect. Insert some other SD card and see if the phone nose it out.

ill probably end up doing that and just buy a new sdcard but i have a feeling itll do he same thing seeing as my PC sees it just fine and my last phone used it without a glitch. Now formatting this card for this phone, ive lost 1gb of photos!
Well I just did a small test. I have formatted a spare SD card with NTFS(I used MiniTool Partition Wizard for that) and put it in the phone. It told me that the SD card is blank and not properly formatted and asked if I want to format the card.
So this is something that your phone should do too. So my conclusion is that there must be either something wrong with the card or with the phone. So hurry to try a different SD card and if it doesn't work you should ask for replacement device.

thanks everyone so very much for all your help!!!
i called Future Shop (where i purchased my device) and explained everything including your guys help to them, and they said it sounds like the devices card reader is defective. So...seeing as i just got this on Friday last week, i can exchange it for a new device at no cost.
:good:
just got back in from future shop....
seems it was the sdcard that was defective but...
after coming home, i reformatted the old sdcard back to ntfs and dropped a pic on it from my PC and it still works?? lol
for some odd reason the device just didnt see the card? maybe cuz it was generic? maybe cuz it was only 1gb? i dunno??
however...got me a new 8gb sdcard for 14.00, thatll do me just fine!!
again, thanks for all the help

I have tried all the technic which is written above but still the problem is same
I got my ATT Note 2 last night and its great so far. When I plugged in the Sandisk Class 10 64gb microsd card I got on amazon, it did not ask to format it. When I go to settings it shows the card and 59.6GB available and does have the tab that asks if you want to format. I did not click on it since the card is recognized. I even moved some songs on to the card and they played so my question is. Do I need to format the card or is it working straight out of the package like it should? I just don't want to put a bunch of stuff on the card and then find out I need to format it after all. My GF's note 2 did the same thing. I read on a bunch of threads about how the cards didnt work with the stock format and only showed 32GB but mine seems to be OK. Any thoughts?
Note 2 recognizes exfat format, which your sdcard is probably formatted to out of the box since it's a 64GB. So no need to change it to another format. Most older phones don't recognize the format though, so if you're planning to move it to and from another (older) phone you might want to. Otherwise, keep it as it is. The posts you read about people having problems with 64gb micro sd card were probably using a phone that doesn't support exfat format.

Thanks!!!
BTW is there a way to create folders inside the SD card so when I move my music and pictures to it I know where they are.
sure... you can create them from your phone using the built-in file explorer in your phone (My Files). Go to All files > extSdCard > Press Menu button and choose Create folder.
Or you can connect your phone to your PC and create folders from windows explorer.

I tried doing it on Windows explorer and it would not let me. I will try myfiles on the phone.
Some custom kernels do not support exfat, just letting you know just in case.

I'm having the worst time finding a solution to this, and it's backwards from everyone else's problems that I'm finding.
For the first time, I decided to Root/Flash my phone to a custom ROM via CWM and Beanstalk. Everything went smooth. But now while in the Android OS I am completely unable to mount my 64GB External SD which was fully functional in Stock.
To clarify (and what's backwards from everyone else's problems apparently) is that in CWM I CAN see/mount the External drive and browse files on it. It's only once Android boots that the External SD fails to mount. I've Reset/Reloaded the ROM, as well as CWM, and the result is always the same. I've even tried a different version of CWM (Philz Touch: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38298833). Works great, but the Recovery loader isn't the problem...it's always within Android itself that it vanishes.
I've also, via CWM, wiped every cache there was. The two things I have not done are formatting the Internal and External SD's.
The only solutions I have found in the forums/online are people who have reformatted their external SD's to Fat32 instead of extFAT, and I'm willing to give it a shot, but thought I'd check here first.
I scoured through all 110+ pages of the Beanstalk ROM forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38298833) and no one apparently is having this problem, so I'm not about to blame the dev.
Any thoughts/help is greatly appreciated!

:highfive:
Does the FAT32 let you keep files bigger than 4gb? I have a 64gb, and use most of it for HD movies for my kids. (Brave, Nemo, etc.)
nope it doesnt...but most of us just use a program that takes those files and converts them to a smaller size type...handbrake is what I use, and it takes a 8 gig mkv file and knocks it down to under a gig...much smarter idea...and, on a 5 inch screen, you cant tell any difference in quality..
fix
I could swear I saw an EXFAT fix for Beanstalk a few days ago, somewhere on here....run a search. I will check my history.
some kernels allow for exfat use, but, not all of them do, so why bother with it; just go fat 32, make those movies smaller, and this problem is no longer a problem, no matter what rom/kernel you decide to use..

I guess I'm annoyed that if have to move everything to my computer... Then back to the SD to format it. Its the only thing keeping me from dual booting.

well, you should back up the contents of your sd card to your computer anyways, so this is a good time to do that..
Thanks for the feedback - greatly appreciated.
I formatted my SD card to FAT32, but did it in recovery mode on the phone, turning on "Mount USB" mode - and did it through the phone via my PC and a USB cable.
After I did this, now CWM/Touch can no longer mount the card, and Beanstalk ROM still can't see it. However, I'm getting a different message now - something about the SD card "being empty". If I try to formatted it via Beanstalk while booted into android, nothing happens.
After some reading, people have advised using an SD Reader - and formatting the SD card via the Reader connected to a PC. I don't have a reader yet (I'll grab one shortly) but thought I'd ask first - whether the SD card is formatted FAT32 while in the phone, or done via an SD Reader, does it matter? Is there a real difference in how the SD card is formatted between these two scenario's?
I saw this on Phiz Touch CWM recovery loader: "All external sdcard issues: first format in PC with primary partition, tons of people are formatting as logical and come cry". So what I'm assuming is that somehow the SD Reader via the PC creates a "Primary" partition whereas if it's formatted via the phone and a USB cable, maybe it formats it as a Logical?
Thanks again for the help - once I get this all sorted out I'll be sure to post back with my solution for anyone else struggling.
format it in your computer for fat 32, then throw it in the phone.
when you bought it, it should have had a larger sd "holder" that you can use to format it on your computer, assuming you have one, or a sd card reader is built into your computer.
Sometimes I have had issues formatting my cards in my phone; I have used my camera, and my computer successfully, but the phone formatting can be iffy, so do it on a pc, and you wont have any issues. Format it as fat32, and use the default allocation size, if that comes up in the formatting dialog on your pc
You're the man - I feel like I at least owe you a coke for your timely responses.
Oddly enough, I think I cleaned house a while back and chucked every single adapter card I had - trust me...I just went through every box/bin/desk I owned trying to find one. So yeah, learned myself a lesson right there.
I do have a camera - maybe I'll give that a shot in the meantime and see if that does any better.
I wanted to post a follow-up with my status.
I grabbed a USB card reader (the kind you can put Micro SD's or standard SD's into, then plug them into the PC like a USB stick), used one of the recommended FAT32 formatting programs, and viola! Everything is fixed and the SD is working as designed.
Big thanks to wase4711 for the insight and help! I'm totally excited about trying other ROM's, now that I have that issue ironed out.
Kudos!
glad to see it worked for u..
First of all, I think my first thread was in the wrong section so I decided to post it again HERE. Please lock and remove the old thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal.../im-trouble-applying-update-external-t3023915
So, yeah. I can't apply update from external storage. It has no content. I tried formatting my SD Card and performed a factory reset. I can't flash anything from it. My baseband version is I8160XXMG2.
Actually, when I choose "apply update from external storage" there's some weird combination of letters, numbers, and symbols in it. I can't seem to remove it. Please help me ASAP. I want to install Cyanogenmod 10.2
Does File System format of SD Card need to be something like FAT32, NTFS or other for it to be detected in "apply update from external storage"? Right now it's Generic Hierarchical. Is there anyway for me to format it again via USB Cable? I don't have any card reader.
Anyone? Please help me...

If you can put SD cards in your computer you can reformat it from there. You might need an adapter if your computer doesn't take micro sd cards. My SD card came with an adapter (basically a piece of plastic to slide the small sd card in so it becomes bigger to fit in your computer).
I believe it needs to be FAT32, not sure if it would work with other file systems. But if it works for other purposes on your phone it should already be FAT32.
I'm not 100% sure about this so you might want to wait for a reply of someone who has more experience.
Hope it helps.
