N or a sideward's Z icon - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if I am being stupid but I have an icon on the top righthand corner of the phone that looks like a double N or a double Z turned 90 degrees.
What is this?

Yep. It's the icon that shows that NFC is on.

Great thank you
How do I turn on GPS? and use the barometer?
Also I read that this phone can act like a remote, anywhere to get an app to change channels at the local pub

settings / location for gps
the htc tv app has the remote control features. you should be able to tune the channels on most tv's with it

I prefer SmartRemote on my M7. I use it to put the Stars game on at bars and stuff.

could you consider adding a dock mode toggle into your app ?
besides that, it works great !
testing now, I play movies everyday

Awesome idea! my phone overheats, so this will be great thanks!
Just what is was looking for...
Will try it later when using the MHL
Thanks

Love it great idea !
is it possible to assign a shortcut button or have it as a notification for easier in app access ?
Working great so far
You could always place a widget of the app to access it quick from home launcher. If I implement permanent notification, it requires a service to be kept running -> battery problem. However if you want, then I could implement a notification toggle that let you turn on the screen without the need of putting the phone to sleep and wake it up.
Please share any other ideas if you have

The best thing I have found so far is an app called Screen Filter (turns the brightness to almost 0%). For me it works best to set a homescreen widget so you can access it when the screen is unreadable.

To any one who want me to port this app to their devices, please note that I don't have the device myself (I only have Nexus S / Moto Xoom and the HOX International). So please PM me, so I can give you instruction on how you can help me port this app.

How to keep GPS on when screen is/goes off?

How can I do that? I was travelling in an unknown location yesterday and was using GMaps, but when the screen was going off GPS was losing its connection and it was re-established after some seconds, it was annoying and time consuming. Not only GMaps, other GPS related applications also react the same way! Could anything be done? Anyone?
Thanks in advance.

If you are using Google Maps without the "Navigation" like i do because of the country restrictions then you are right; GPS goes off with the screen. But if you have 3rd party navigation apps, like Sygic or Route 66, then they either do not allow the screen to sleep or do not let GPS turn off even if the app is minimised in the background.
But if you still want to use your Maps there was this app which you can select the apps and when those apps are on on the foreground it prevents the screen from turning off. But i can not remember the name. If i can find it i will post here.
'KeepScreen' available at Play Store. Just search for it.

Yes, I've seen My Tracks keeps steady gps signal when screen is on, but it loses it's stability when screen is off, it's really annoying!
@Others: Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them both and give feedback.
PS: Backitude is meant for Google Latitude! I don't use Latitude, so it'll do no good for me.

Is it possible to use NFC for custom Pandora commands?

I'd love to use NFC while I'm playing Pandora, to do one or more of these things:
Skip ahead
Thumbs up
Thumbs down
"I'm tired of this track"
Does anyone have any idea how I could do this? Is it even possible?
Not sure how you could incorporate NFC. But voice with tasker would work fine.

Any hints on how to do this? I am not great with either voice or Tasker. For instance, how to thumb down using tasker?

Screen keypress..
Basically, you get the x,y coordinates for the different buttons on the screen.
You can get these coordinates in developer options on "pointer location" and then you run the shell to emulate these touches.
Search for "tasker emulate enter key" same concept. Enjoy!

I did a tasker to uninstall pandora and to install rhapsody .. really I did just to see if i could ..
It's very easy, like the post a couple spots above me, just set up Tasker (which is complicated I know but start with small things) to push buttons in Pandora, then use any recent nfc app to launch Tasker, and you're set!

Thanks dude, I got as far as being able to set tasks to press buttons on the Pandora screen.
BUT, I don't know how to get Pandora to show up on the screen when it's playing in the background already. Anyone know how to do this?
(I already tried the action of just opening the app of Pandora, but it doesn't do anything if Pandora is already running in the background).
Not the cleanest solution, but maybe put a shortcut on your home screen then set Tasker to use that?

Status Bar Symbols/Icons

Can anyone tell me what the symbol is left of the headphones one?
Better still, anyone got a full list of icons we're likely to see.
Thank you.

Yes. It's when BoomSound is active. Usually appears when sound from an app or music is playing. If you go to settings and scroll down you'll see BoomSound and the icon there too.

Military time

Does anyone know how to change the watch to display military time?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I believe mine changed to military time when I selected to use 24h time in my phone's settings.
Sounds simple enough, but I don't see those Particular settings. Can you show me exact order?

Oh, disregard. I didn't catch the phone settings part.

Not that I'm against having options, but can I ask why you would want one on your phone and another on your watch?
EDIT: You can look into certain watch faces. I see that Beautiful Weather Watch Face offers the ability of changing the time between 12h, 12h w/AMPM, 24h.
