[Q] Any Advice? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Hello everybody, i took the 4.4.2 update from verizon back in February. i realize that there are ways to s-off via a java card, but i am not willing to do that. Im fine with spending the $25 just dont want to have to mail it because this phone is my every-day phone so i would need it. my theory, with this phone being almost 2 months old is that i could contact Verizon and make a complaint about the purple camera tint problem as i do have that. im hoping the refurbished phone i get would come with 4.1.2 or 4.3 because when i picked this phone up new from the verizon store back in January it came with 4.1.2. Do you think this is a good idea or not as i will not get a "new" htc one but refurbished phones are just like new as i have had many before. Also, there is probably not gonna be a exploit released for awhile and im not fine with waiting till August.

Well first of all it's $75 not $25 and I wouldn't go through Verizon if I were you... just send it to HTC and they'll replace the camera for you and you'll get back the same phone in working order. Most people have been getting it back with 4.3 but there is a risk of getting 4.4 so it's up to you. The refurb from Verizon would probably be 4.3 or lower but that's not guaranteed either.

Plus with most refurbished phones they are the ones that people returns and the purple tint issue won't be fixed by them.

I realize that there is a very great chance of the refurbished phones having the purple tint problem but I'm not really worried or care so much because as long as I can take a picture that's good enough for me.

Did you have to walk in the store?
or can you just call them about it and get the phone mailed to you

Just call and they will send you one and once you get it you have 5 days to send one back.

Alright sounds good, i have dealt with refurbished iPhones before( yes i actually used to have one). Still deciding if i want to give up my current "new" one but the refurbished iPhones and other droids i had didn't have any problems that i can recall, so leaning towards getting a refurbished one.

T-Mobile JUMP! and KNOX

So... I'm coming up for my first JUMP on 1/19. I'm considering getting the Galaxy Note 3 or the LG G2. I've heard a lot about the KNOX flag and the warranty being void but I'm curious about any experience with trade-ins.
According to T-Mobile, the only things they check when you exchange a phone using JUMP is that a) it doesn't have a cracked screen, b) it doesn't have water damage, and c) it powers on and boots.
They didn't mention anything about checking for tripped flags, root, or anything else (and at this store pretty much all of the guys there have rooted their phones). Does anyone have experience with this yet or know concrete info? I'm ready to dump the One like a bad habit but I'm not going to get a Note 3 if I have to worry about not being able to trade it after 6 months because I chose to free the device to run to my specifications.
Considering that every phone on T-Mobile is 0 down right now, I'll be getting a new phone on the 19th and the only thing that is pushing me towards the G2 is the concern that I might not be able to trade in the Note 3 later and get stuck paying 708 dollars for it.
I had turned in my note 2 for the 3 and just turned it back stock and no issues.. He didn't look into software.. Just made sure it works

I guess I'll just call them and see what they say about it. I think you're probably right and that I'm freaking out about nothing but I don't want to make a 708 dollar mistake and I don't want an S4. Maybe I'll wait for the S5... I don't really know at this point.

I have an HTC One so I have the same 32GB of internal storage and a worse camera than the G2.
Trust me, I've spec'd both phones and I want the Note 3 but KNOX is holding me back for two reasons - one in case T-Mobile checks it when I do my next upgrade and two because it appears to have stopped a lot of development for the phone. I don't see much in the way of custom ROMs over here, especially compared to the One since AT&T, T-Mobile, and international variants are all 100% ROM compatible with each other.

We have great roms but it would be ur call. I know the specs are one thing but you can go to store and test camera. As far as Knox. I have sent back 5 phones all rooted and never got a problem. The phones went back cause it was t mobile not knowing how to fix issue. The dev of tweaked helped me fix it.

Oh I believe you about the camera but my One has been taking pink photos in low light for months now so anything is an upgrade lol.
I wouldn't be worried about warranty exchanges, I've sent back phones with jacked up bootloaders for that no problem lol. When you use JUMP they actually look at the phone though because its a trade in to get a new model and they wipe out the balance of the old one. I guess I might take the risk. Out of the box I've heard the Note 3 isn't really too bad on stock software anyway. I've got a Nexus 7 if I want to play with custom ROMs and such. I'll ask the store about it when I go trade in my One though. I have a guy there that I always deal with who roots his phones (he's the one who actually told me how to fix a problem I was having with my One's signal by flashing an unofficial radio) so I'll ask him what's up.
If you have Jump, the phone has a carrier warranty which doesn't void because of Knox flags. Only the manufacturer warranty (people who don't pay the extra$ for Tmo warranty) get hassled if rooted, Tmo employees could care less (USA)

I don't know what i am going to do in 4 months. I don't see a much better phone on the horizon. The gs5 is just going to feel so small. Maybe the note 4 will come by Christmas and I'll trade up every year or so.

I don't think I can go back to a smaller screen. Held my wifes s3 and it feels so tiny, I have been spoiled by the Note's screen size.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it jump only provides value (or at least yields the best return) if you commit to upgrading every six months, as every month beyond that you're paying off the balance that would otherwise be wiped out in an upgrade--the whole reason you're paying the premium in the first place.
I wonder if they would allow an upgrade to another note 3.

I know that T-Mobile doesn't void their warranty, even when you root a phone.
However... I wasn't sure how that worked on trade ins.
I called the store today and the training that they've gotten regarding ANY trade-in is just to make sure that there is no water damage, the screen isn't cracked or otherwise damaged beyond hairline scratches and that the device powers up.
They said that since they just refurb them anyway, they aren't concerned with anything else.
I think I've pretty much made up my mind to go for the Note 3 in light of this information. Especially since I don't hear about overheating with it like I do with the Nexus 5, the G2, and the Z1. Apparently the G2 gets so hot that it actually reboots... Too close to home for me with all the issues with rebooting the G2x had. I can't see myself wanting a GS5 and the HTC One+ looks like its just a marginal upgrade to the One. I'd consider waiting for it if I could get confirmation it was going the have the Snapdragon 805 but Qualcomm themselves have said devices using it will be out in the second half of the year so really, I can't go wrong with upgrading to the Note 3 now.
I'm going to do just a little bit more research to make sure it doesn't have the thermal issues but so far, it looks like a green light. Hopefully it doesn't take much work to get N9005 ROMs to work on N900T models.
Thanks everyone!
And when it comes to the Jump upgrade period, it depends. If you get your upgrade at 0 down, its still a savings at the 1 year mark. Besides that, the monthly cost for Jump is only 2 bucks more than insurance and warranty were by themselves and its the same price if you had the 11.99 that the Note II and Note 3 required. If you don't upgrade often though, the benefits definitely diminish.
Thank you so much for this thread, everyone. I got the Note 3 not knowing about Knox and was hesitant to root it. After reading this thread, I'm going for it.

Coming from the Galaxy Nexus, I forgot about stuff like Knox. Good to know it shouldn't be an issue. Been rootin' and romin' since the D1 and haven't ever had to return a phone for anything related.

Randomly walked into an ATT store this morning and got a Note 4...

...So when are we getting a good root?

Probably never.
I bet by the end of this week. Root will be easy, bootloader will not be broken though. I just want my Titanium Backup and Root Explorer so root is all need.
I called a few att stores in my area and each of them said they have them in stock, but cannot sell them... How'd you pull this off?

You'll never have CM11 on it. Never. But you can use exposed and do other mods. Just no ROMS.

I was surprised when it happened because samsung phones were always so open. Nexus 6 looks good but it's just a big phone with no feature that I know of at least to take advantage if that screen. At least they finally went above 32gb now. But I don't think I'll ever buy an AT&T phone ever again.
I did the same. Walked into an AT&T near me during lunch and got a white Note 4. I wasn't expecting to be able to get one but they are selling them here in Milwaukee.
Much like some of you here, I don't need anything more than root to run titanium and a couple other things. I never understood the idea of getting a note device to throw an AOSP rom on it that negates the S Pen functionality and other Note qualities. Why not just get any other big phone?

Why do you say that? Root and bootloader are two completely different things.
Root should be easy and we should get it. Custom recovery on the other hand, probably not.

Correct me if I'm wrong but these custom ROMS don't support the S Pen. If that is true, what use is the ROMS if you can't use the S Pen. That is one major point of the whole note.

The S Pen was never a real selling point for me. HTCs have bad cameras, LGs have have horrible reliability from mine/my buddies experience with the G2 and the Note is still the spec king. I could definitely get behind a Nexus though.

Which store did you go to? I tried at the Greenfield store on 76th and Layton but they said they will start selling it on the 17th.
I don't mind touchwiz myself and if you haven't played with a note 4 in store you might be pretty happy with touchwiz this time around, its snappy and actually doesn't look nearly as bad as it used to. Can just install nova or google now launcher if it is that bothersome though from a UI perspective. Setting wise I think Samsung offers more a better features than aosp.

I got the Note 4 in Pasadena, they had 5 white and 2 black. They are technically not suppose to sell them until Friday, but all the corp stores got them. It took a bit of effort to get them to admit they had them, and I pulled the corporate partner card on them so they went ahead with it.
Now what sucks is I can't transfer any of my data with titanium backup, I am wondering when root will be available.
I also agree with others here, if you don't need or care for the S-Pen the Nexus 6 is probably the device you want...
So who will be first to release a root?
Hopefully we can get root for now... Maybe we should check out the G3 forum as they got root with the bootloader locked...

To be honest, id probably flash that update. Im in Israel and i have yet to find someone with a Java card here. Stock isnt horribleeeee but i miss Cyanogen/AOSP
Stock isn't bad at all if you disable all the crap. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact we're not getting root.

Ok, a hundred people or so will have root. Which means there's not a whole lot of development that will be happening, so I'll just live with stock.

I disagree, it takes time to get things going. Most the Developers (that I know of anyway) that are on Verizon have gotten their phones S-OFF, and are working hard to bring us the goodies. It will only get better from here, and those who are patient enough or don't feel like shipping their devices, will have all the goodies waiting for them, as we are working hard getting the ball rolling. It will only keep getting better and better. Even if SunShine NEVER brings support to Verizon, their any many amazing people with Java Cards who are 100% trustworthy and depending how you ship your device it can be back the same week. (I personally sent my phone out with $400 insurance on a Monday, and the phone was back in my hands by Wednesday - It was on it's way back to me with a tracking # before I even had time to see if the phone had made it!) 100% worth it, and thank you again @dottat!

I think I will be. Forcing myself to use it until tomorrow or a few more days...then decide between keeping this or my V30. Heavily leaning toward V30 right now.
I'm not sure yet, will use for a week and then decide. I really like the phone, but get the off axis blue screen quite a bit.
I'm not sure if mine is worse than normal or similar to other units.

Completely agree
I'm also in the "nope, not returning it" group. I really like my 2 XL and my screen is just fine for my eyes.
I impulse purchased the device at Verizon the other night. I have the Note8 but wanted the Pixel2 as a replacement for my Nexus 6P whuch gets used for kernel hacking & ROM development. Having learned that the Verizon won't be unlocking the bootloader was a deal breaker for me. Mine is going back.
After seeing the screen and playing with the device I'm not interested in ordering the unlocked sku directly from Google. I'm unsure what to buy for a new dev device at this point.
--ok
It's not what I hoped it would be, bought Verizon one hoping like last year I could unlock bootloader. Gonna return and go with one plus 5t most likely. Gonna test drive v30 also.
People returning the Verizon variant phone because they couldn't unlock the bootloader!? Really? At this point, that is old news about Verizon phones. If that's what you care about, that is a scenario in which you wait to see if anyone figures out unlocking the bootloader before you buy. Secondly, I bought the unlocked variant from Google knowing full well that it'll be a while probably before we get things like root and twrp. Not trying to bash on anyone, but c'mon. Y'all should know better.

It's not what I hoped it would be, bought Verizon one hoping like last year I could unlock bootloader. Gonna return and go with one plus 5t most likely. Gonna test drive v30 also.

Does the 5t even work on Verizon?
It's a phenomenally fluid device and killer battery life, but I really can't get used the display which is so essential, so returning it.

Verizon bootloader unlock???

my dumbass screwed up and purchased the verizon one by accident. and was wondering if anyone has heard or seen the bootloader unlocked anywhere. ive googled but keep getting pixel 1 threads
Nope.
Return it for refund, then order a non VZW version.
Ah. The tragic tales continue. Return it.

They could not give me me one free of charge (if I had to keep it for my DD.) If I can't unlock the bootloader, I don't want it. But that's just me and a bunch of other people. YMMV.

How did you like it in comparison to the note 8? I currently have the note (despite always being a nexus guy and a Samsung hater) and I love it. But still tempted by the pixel.

I really don't think you have much to worry about then. Personally, I'd take a dozen of them and give them out to everyone I know since no one I know even knows what a bootloader is, no less root.
I have a VZW Pixel locked bootloader and I have no regrets. I recently had to return the one I got for $240 over 2 years for a warranty replacement. They sent me another Verizon model but I could unlock it this time. Must have slipped thru the cracks. I did flip the switch but I won't unlock it until I no longer have it on a network at which point I'd play around with stuff and not worry about performance or soft bricks. I've found no real reason to unlock it while using it as my DD.
But as you say, that's just you and this is just me. Neither of us is right or wrong, it's just how we do things these days. I will not pay $650 just to have a device that I can bl unlock when I won't unlock it anyway. Under $300 and $360 for the 2 XL is a tremendous deal. Other than on XDA I doubt there are many who even care about bl at those prices. You won't get that from Google and maybe not even from Verizon this year. We'll see.

Not yet but hopefully soon.
My bet is there will never be a bootloader exploit for the VZW bootloader's. This time I went direct with Google.
I ordered a Pixel 2 XL from Verizon last night about 9:00pm and already have it in my hands and activated. I'm not one of those that has to have an unlockable bootloader either. I purchased from Verizon because it was 50% off by trading in my Verizon Moto Z Force. Lately I've switched camps from must have unlockable bootloader to don't want unlocked bootloader. I prefer to remain stock and take OTA's without issues. My past experiences have taught me that the stock software untampered with performs better and more reliably than any 3rd party ROM ever will. My only reason for unlocking to begin with was ad blocking and removing unwanted apps. You can block ads with "VPN Hosts" app on an unrooted phone and I don't feel the need to remove software any more. I just don't open what I don't use. I haven't tried to unlock the bootloader on this new phone but I suspect you cannot.

I know, the note is an amazing device. I keep thinking I'm nuts by sticking with it but it's kinda flawless.

I use the pixel as a toy and to play around with roms. Ill probably save a few hundred bucks and buy the 5t this week, and use the note for my dd

That's what I use my op3t for. I just went into a Verizon store and played with the pixel, took a few indoor shots and compared them. I'm no longer looking for a pixel.

Very hit or miss. The quality control is poor. If had each except the five. Two of my kids still using my old ones and they are holding up well but it's a total lottery. That's been my experience with every model they have released.

I'm strongly considering ordering one from VZW because of the current promotion. I had resided to keeping my Pixel XL, but now that I know I can take an old spare phone and get 50% of a new pixel 2 XL, I'm very tempted. I have a Pixel XL with an unlocked bootloader, but it's been unrooted for at least the last 8 months and I haven't otherwise taken advantage of the unlocked bootloader so I don't think I'd miss it. I love the stock ROM, the seamless update process, and decreased vulnerability.

There is one thing about the Pixel 2 XL you need to be aware of. The screen colors are pale and not very vivid. As a result the display does not look as good as other phones. Do some research on that before you buy to make sure you can live with it. I'm ok with it but I'm sure others may not be.

With saturated color mode, it definitely is not too pale. Actually, that mode is too saturated to me, but some people like it that way

LOL I just got the update a few minutes ago.that's the first thing I tested. Saturated mode does improve the colors, at least in my opinion.
