Discussion: Sailfish OS - Sony Xperia ZL

Hello Guys,
in the last time I read a lot about the Sailfish OS developed by Jolla and running on the Jolla Phone and a few other devices including the Nokia N9 and the Galaxy Nexus.
Jolla said that it wants to publish its OS for android smartphones and I decided to open this thread to inform you about Sailfish and discuss it, so we can maybe build up an userbase and so become a part in the Sailfish development for android devices as soon as Jolla publishes its sources.
Jolla wrote that it shall be easy to install Sailfish on every android handset. I have no clue how that will work out and what effort one has to take to actually run it, but it seems as if Jolla wants the users to have it the easiest way possible.
What is Sailfish OS?
It is an OS based on Meego and so in linux, just like android. But there are a lot of differences as well:
The navigation in Sailfish works via gestures, swipe inside the app to the left to go back, down to get into settings, from the left edge to get to the homescreen and more.
The homescreen consists of an overview about open apps in tiles, which are partly interactive.
The system itself is very open to developers and runs even android apps with help of the so called "Alien Dalvik" VM.
Another striking point is, that, other than most if the other OS, it does not force you to have unnecessary apps installed, even the android app support is a module you can download in the market and doesn't use your resources if you don't want it.
The administrative rights (~root) are easy to gain.
I link you a video here that shows you the newest update on the Jolla phone, the new version is considered stable.
The battery of the Jolla phone has 2100 mah and lasts with this update about three days with moderate use. While he does not explain "moderat use" closer, a user said he used whatsapp a lot and so, while I get only one day with moderate use (whatsapp and e-mail), out is likely that the battery time would only improve.
Of course this cannot be guaranteed, but I would like to read your thoughts about it.
what do you think about Sailfish?
Especially concerning the fact that our beloved Xperia ZL is generally less supported than Xperia Z thanks to Sony not making the effort to advertise it as XZ :/
Greetings

Update:
here a member of the xda Community pasted a mail concerning the development state of Sailfish on the nexus 4.
It's as well mentioned, a tool called something like "Hardware adaption" which will work with every cm10 Rom and apparently turn the (Sailfish) Rom into a device specific Rom with the drivers used in cm10.
In my eyes it's very likely that this is also the method Jolla may apply when releasing Sailfish for Android.
What do you think?

So Guys, apparently the Alien dalvik (to run android apps on Sailfish) may not be available on Android hardware due to licensing issues.
Still interested?
Personally I was not planning to use the Alien Dalvik anyways, but for many users this may be essential
What do you think?

it would be a good breakthrough for our phone

Dont be sad @keenofhiphop
Consider yourself lucky that our device is almost identical to xperia z so our awesome devs can port it.
And i heard that jolla will make sailfish available for higher end xperia devices so we come in that category
If you need help pm me or search
I will try my best to help you out

That's right as well
As I am no dev I would even take the time to learn it as it *should* be easy if you believe Jolla.

There's a Whatsapp client for sailfish called Mitäkuuluu (or similar) and it is said to be working pretty fine. There's even an indie Tapatalk client for sailfish.
So it's not that there are no Apps. There are just less

Which rom to flash for a friend

Hey guys,
Knowing that I'm a long time gs2 and nexus4/7 flasher, a friend of me just asked me whether i could make her xperia arc s faster. She's apparently on ICS and the phone is quite slow indeed. Factory resetting didn't help that much.
so my question is: is there a decent ROM for an xperia arc s which fulfills these requirements:
- stable
- faster than stock
- no/few potential dealbreakers (stuff that doesn't work opposed to stock)
- no bloatware, possibly close to stock android
Is there such a rom?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

You can just search the Android Development Forums here.
Since your friend is asking for something similar to AOSP, she can go for a CM ROM.
Can you recommend one from personal experience?

It's not allowed but in my experience i like racing bean its based on cm 10 jelly bean rom its very fast and pretty.ICS based rom is Ultimate HD the best if you ask me.Bit all other ROMs out there are almost good as these two but i think these two are popular.

[Q] i want a rom for BBM

hello everyone
BBM dont work on original rom because its 2.3.5 and BBM works only on 4.0.0 or higher so i downloaded an awesome custom room 4.2.2 but when i try to open BBM after installed it its says " unfortunately bbm has stopped " and i searched google and found that BBM dont work on custom roms too
so i want original room 4.0.0 or higher to use BBM on it
its a necessary for me
thank you and sorry for me bad english :victory:
Answer is short mate. As bbm isn't made.for armv6 devices (old processor architecture) like our phone it can't run because it needs armv7 and so only chance maybe is converting the app which may isn't possible to port due to new programming.

[Q] Pros and Cons of a custom ROM on this tablet.

Really tired of the bloat on this tablet. Thinking about rooting it so that I can remove most of the Samsung junk. Thought about going one step further and flashing another ROM. What would be the downsides, if any, of doing this?
As a long time "rooter" of devices there are a few downsides.....
- usually voids warranty
- can not accept official Sammy updates
- must wait for a custom Rom to incorporate the update
- many custom Rom updates require (or is highly recommended) a fresh install meaning one must "setup the tablet" from scratch.
* not to say there aren't more positives about rooting and installing a custom Rom...you just asked about the negatives. Basically unless you load a custom Rom and stick with that for a while, you are usually doing a lot of updates and tinkering with Roms, settings, and kernels a lot as custom Rom writers ("devs"......God bless them) usually put out frequent updates trying better their product. If you like that then it's for you. If you don't it can be very aggravating.

I havent bought device and sold it before rooting it and do what i want with it , its real fun.Bad about rooting or custom roms is if you dont know what you doing you may lose your device
But if ya careful ,read and not flash anythin you see , you will be fine.
why android devices somehow beats IOS ? cause you can do what you want and let your device do what you want not device control you
as above said you may lose official updates , you always can go back to stock as it was as i did when i sold my preview devices
and root may stops some apps from working as they ask for unrooted devices and they are so few
PS: my note 2014 is still stock , not ready to miss with it , still playin with my note 2
If we root, how are we suppose to go back to stock to accept kitkat? Nobody is deving for the device and I was thinking of rooting.

No, actually it makes the pen even better because you can add every app you want to run in a multiwindow /pen window, you can get 4 apps multitasking and so on

There a particular ROM that extends this multi-window feature or is it an app?
I dont know which device you exactly have, there is 1 custom rom which includes all apps in multiwindow. But ypu can get that with an app as well

SM-P600. I think I found the app on the market.
So, no control or functionality issues persist in custom ROMs like Paranoid Android or CM?
I am using Multiwindow Apps Manager from AEON TIME

Help me understand the "bloat" issue you have? How does it interfere with using the tablet?
I once was all rah rah about flashing new roms but these days I just need root to tweak the stock ROM to my liking. I've removed most of the Samsung bloat, Knox and other stuff from my device...You would think I have a faster nexus 10 with S Pen and multi tasking. So I really don't mind the lack of development...

I hope so! It's so beautiful! And seems really good!
Yeah that would be so great but having Ubuntu Touch would also be very nice, here is a porting guide on it so maybe anyone can do that? I can't I dont have a PC which could do that so anyone out there could make it!

That's right but it's still Android so you have the soft keys and so on the design of the apps themselves is also still Android and you can't change that.

That's what i mean! it's still basic android. I liked the pac-man rom, but there is so much not working. I just wish we had some real android 'skins', like the sailfish os, firefox os, ubuntu touch, touch wiz all those.
And for every other OS that you want to port you need CM 10.1 and that's the version we have.

[Q] Hashcheck-Hybrid vs xKat ROMs: Which do you prefer?

Ever since the release of 4.4.2 on the SM-P600, I've been using the Hashcheck-Hybrid ROM. It's fast, although it sometimes crashes (this could be due to the custom firmware, though,) and doesn't have quite as many listed benefits as the other ROM I'm considering getting, xKat. For those of you who use the latter ROM, what do you think of it?

This.
Comparison threads about roms/kernels/themes/etc never conclude somewhere and there is always unwanted fights in them.
The best you can do is to try them both and see what suits you best.
