Hey guys, I've finally had enough of trying to make my MT4GS work how it should and am finally starting to seriously shop around. I think I've settled on the GS4 but I've been lost wading through hundreds of forum posts. Honestly I just have one question: If I go to the T-Mo store right now today and buy a GS4, is it possible for me to flash the Google Play version of the ROM to the phone? I'm kind of confused with the whole Knox update thing whether or not it's possible, though I did catch the post about not letting the phone update and clearing the cache on first boot.
I know the answer is somewhere spread across multiple posts, but I just wanted to get a definitive answer before I go get the phone. Thanks for your help in advance!

Yes, you can. I bought mine with 4.3 installed. Rooted that, then reflashed stock to get 4.4 when it came out. When I rooted 4.4 I didn't pay attention well enough and used a method that tripped Knox. If you want GPE don't worry, you're gonna trip Knox which is no big deal unless you want the warranty. When I realized I've tripped Knox I have installed 4 different roms including Google Play Edition. I need wifi calling so I'm back to a TW based rom now.

Like the title says im running 4.1.2 but i hear there might be a release of 4.2 coming the 20th?
I'm wanting to root my phone and join the club. I'm pretty much a newb when it come to this I want to make sure i do everything right when i start the process i'm a truck driver so my phone is a important part of my day to day activity and cant end up bricking my phone.
Ive been looking at youtube vids and reading comments some people having problems and some doing just fine.
Could someone recommend a link one with a video to show the process that would be great, should i wait for a over the air update to 4.2
Sprint won't be going to 4.2 . They are bypassing and the upcoming update will be 4.3. I would wate until the update comes out before you root. That way the roms and rooters will be able to be written and hou can have all the perks of an official 4.3

I disagree. I would root now. It's possible with any OTA update, it could secure the root exploit. And nothing has been really said when any update is coming. Could be a couple weeks or a couple months.
And if you're rooted already, you'll only need to wait a day or two before someone uploads a rooted version of the update to flash.
Plus, if you fubar something, it's likely already been done and you'll be able to find a fix.
And if you do depend on your phone, it's hard to say what things may get borked with the update. So by waiting those few days for the updated rom, you'll find out what is not working and can decide if updating is right for you. Sometimes updates will bork things like GPS.
Personally, I don't see anything you really gain by waiting.

Ditto on rooting before an update. Get root before the Knox **** hits your phone and your warranty is permanently b0rked. Once 4.3 and Knox is on your phone, if you ever root there's chance in hell of ever claiming on your warranty. More likely than not.

Not wanting to wait just want an instruction how to I'm a trucker with a lap top and never have Wi-Fi unless I'm at McDonald's so I don't get to check and download what I'm needing to.
I'm just curious if anyone else here besides me is still on the ATT 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 only because they are still skeptical about updating or just refuse to accept it, and the reasons why. I feel like I'm the bad guy around here because I refuse to rush and play with the latest toy (Ooops, I mean the 4.3 update).
I'm even reading some of the members, and even some devs here wondering why some people are refusing to update, because you can do just about anything on the new bootloader that you can do on the old ones.
Well, I always thought that us rooters who are non-developers are not suppose to accept OTA updates from our carriers, and should only be flashing the Roms from our developers (good devs by the way). OTAs tend to fix previous issues and attempt to make the phones more secure, but at the same time, create new issues and further lock down the phones.
Look at all the posts around here right now that are just filled with 4.3 issues. One of the most common for example: (I'm having issues, have soft bricked, or just don't like the update?) Is there a way to flash back to complete 4.3 stock so that I can start over? No! And without any official firmware released from AT&T, if something goes wrong with your phone, then all you have to flash is a custom ROM, which I was taught that we should be doing any way, while avoiding the OTAs.
I just want to see here if there is anyone else thinking the same way and why, or is this just going to turn into people who OTA-ed becoming defensive.

For starters i can't imagine why anyone who is rooted and running a custom ROM would ever dream of installing an official OTA. By the time the carrier's have had time to update their own ROM and distribute the update it will have long been incorporated into most custom ROM's. Point and case is 4.3 (which i have been running thanks to Task650 for many months)...boom all of a sudden you are stuck with a bootloader that you cannot change, or how about the case of the S4's who blindly or unknowing installed an OTA that gives them a locked bootloader that cant be downgraded (in the case of those of us with carriers who are evil bastards). The only case where i would personally find it 'acceptable' to install official OTA's is someone who has no interest in rooting or installing any custom software to their device. Yes the current S3 bootloader is rootable but one day, probably the next (if there is one) update i would imagine it will be locked down like the new devices. Its sad to say but the direction Google seems to be moving all Android devices may end up this way which will be a dark day indeed.

I don't think it's Google locking the devices down. It's the manufacturers: Samsung, HTC, Motorola, etc... that are incorporating the locked bootloaders. I may be wrong, but that's the way it seems.

Yes currently its the manufacturers, at the behest of the carriers...hence why att and verizon are locked on the s4 and up samsung devices but not sprint or tmo. I was simply stating that if things continue to go the way they seem to be with googles decisions moving forward with android it could end up that way.
They can lock em down but you know some talented dev will find a way in

Same here.
I wonder if for some reason another toy (Ooops, update) comes to this phone, will the rooters who OTA-ed, and then re-rooted or flashed another ROM (and tripped their new warranty bit counters in the process) be able to receive the new update, or will it be blocked because of the counter increment, and once again, will have to rely on custom ROMs, which they should already be doing?

...Anything, except flashing back to stock for reflashing purposes or for warranty service or resetting the Knox warranty bit. OTA may also damage resale value, among other downsides.

There are diverse camps among the rooters & other members here. Through my GS1, GS2 & GS3 I've used mostly debloated stock TW roms; for work, on the road constantly & needing a maximum stable daily driver; like other stock TW enthusiasts.
Apart from user (flashing) errors, the stability, the flexibility & connectivity complaints you cited are what I measured against when deciding to flash a 4.3 rom, kernel & modem from |ROM|Bootloader|Kernel|Modem| AT&T Official 4.3 MJB |24 Nov 2013| .
What designgears, upndwn4par, loserskater & the others have posted on multiple threads I read & reread here before flashing allowed me to attempt the 4.3 upgrade with a solid backout plan & maximum control, reaching my desired result:
Stable, debloated (by me, it's personal) permission edited (using App Ops) battery optimized 4.3 using the same bootloader as on 4.1.2.
The resources exposed in that one thread I linked, plus miles of reading in prep here on XDA showed me how to have the upgrade my way, so even stock a enthusiast can get a first class passage thanks to our devs. Buy them a drink when you can!
I just got my S4 moving off my HTC One and maybe I'm stupid but I can't seem to find a SAFESTRAP or my M919 MK2. I see all the cool mods listed but I'm missing the boat on how to load them safely. I just pulled this thing out of the box and I don't want to trip Knox if I don';t have to, (Super deal on factory sealed unit on Swappa.com - highly reccomend you trade there) These two skins are making MY skin crawl and I need to get Google Edition on here. Is anyone aware of a guide for idiots as I keep reading down dry holes and am not finding any answers. Thanks and KUDOS to all who help us get better. I know I'm a lot less scary than when I got here. I Sim unlocked the phone (didn't have to, but just cause I could to run on Simple Mobile/TMobile Tracfrone subsidiary. Thanks a bunch. I had already rooted using saferoot but was unaware of Triangle Away. That is a great tool. I'm still not clear how to get CWM over there without tripping knox (I know I had 422 last night my bad) and if I am going to be able to run mods without safestrap. I understand the bootloader on the 919 is different and this may not be an issue but I've read two different opinions. I got the pnone new unsealed off swappa so I may not have a warranty to bother with but would like to try and protect it if I can. I can find tutorials for VZW and ATT but not TMO. I need to learn how to look better any advice appreciated. I'd just go for it but this knox thing is worrying me.

I don't think you have warranty, actually im pretty sure you dont. If it were me personally, i would just go ahead and do whatever you want. I think safestrap is the only option to do any sort of cwm. Otherwise, you will trip your knox counter.
im so sick of having a flag ship almost 800 dollar phone with bugs. SOOOO annoying.
a couple of questions first.
can I root without Knox tripping? its been awhile since i investigated.
is Cyanogenmod still one of the best?
does wi-fi calling remain working? (this is a must)
can i use google wallet?
im not so worried about knox anymore.. to fed up to care anymore.
so if the other 3 questions are a yes, then im ready to root. can someone point me in the right direction? this site is like info overload these days. lol.

Three answers
You can root without tripping knox by using towelroot but that wont matter because it seems like you want a custom rom which will need a custom recovery which will trip knox. About Cyanogenmod, in my opinion it is still one of the best and i am about to flash it to my note 3. Lastly when i rooted my wifi calling still works but i used CF Auto root instead of towelroot but i dont think it will make a difference

I've already returned a Knox tripped note 3 for warranty repair with no issues whatsoever.
Cm11 from about 6 weeks ago onwards have been running flawlessly for me. I go back and forth once or twice a week.
I have to say that nf1 had been incredible - fantastic battery, speed and stability.
Update:
I found the Odin files at SamMobile, so that's a comfort. Shouldn't be any problem going back to ANIE but it might make more sense to just hold off until ANK2 gets integrated in some roms...or Lollipop release... that said, I'd still like to know if the ANIE CF-Auto-Root will work on ANK2 firmware, or if it's specific to the firmware listed, and if there will be an issues or lag as others have reported, or if that is a phone issue unrelated to root.
So I rarely post, but a couple of days ago I shattered my Note 2 digitizer. Long story short, it was cheaper (sort of) to swap from the old $80/mo plan to a $60/mo plan with easy pay for the Note 4. My situation is this: I've almost never gotten a phone when it first comes out. So I have a few questions I didn't see answers to.
1) CF Auto Root...Chainfire lists it as supporting ANIE firmware, but not the current update...ANK2? Does it work? Are there still issues?
2) Somewhat related to question 1, but the development seems stagnant for the Sprint Note 4 just 2 months after it says the phone was released. Is it because people are staying on the Note 3? Perhaps it just hasn't picked up yet? I have 14 days to return the phone, so I'd like to go where the action is while I still can.
3) I've been seeing people mention a lot of problems after rooting their Note...lag and such. Is it something I'd be better off waiting to do? It was never an issue with the Note 2...any insight as to how exactly installing busy box even could cause these issues?
4) Rooting trips KNOX. Knox is a physical (not purely software) indicator of tampering, I've seen? Does this matter? Does it void Sprint's TEP, etc.? I don't anticipate needing it, but nobody that loses or damages their phone typically does. Is there presently a way to ODIN back to stock, is there a yellow triangle hanging over my head constantly, etc. if I were to only root the stock ROM and not install a custom one? I realize a flash back to stock will not reset a physical trip of KNOX.
Thanks for taking the time to read through and lend a hand - as I said, I rarely post and try to find this stuff for myself. But it's been a bit much to track down and some of the questions don't lend to specific enough search terms.
Root os compatible with nk2 twrp too even the current custom roms are compatible

Appreciated! What do you mean the current custom roms are supported, though? If they're based on ANIE, when I flash them wouldn't it overwrite NK2? I'm talking software not baseband/modem.

Lag due to xpose...so I need to install the Xposed framework? I was hoping to simply root and leave everything else stock, if possible. Or you mean the custom roms using Xposed framework had to make a fix for it?

Update: Got it rooted, installed Wanam Xposed, enabled the Secure Storage bypass thingy for S Health and Private mode, as well as disabling ro.securestorage in build.prop. Success I hope. Thanks again for the push in the right direction guys!
