Does the modem affect the LTE radio? I am still on MDL bootloader and I installed the NB4 modem. Curious if I will see the huge increase in speeds with LTE like everyone else.

I'm on T-mobile and installed it....
I only got EDGE! Lots of Bars, Much more than I got before, but never saw LTE nor 4G!
When I tried to re-flash the MDL modem which I had before, all hell broke loose.
I ended up reverting to stock, rooting it again, installing CWN recovery, and then getting my nandroid restored to 1 day ago....
Dunno if the modem file I got was farkeled or why it was not working right....
I downloaded a different modem.bin and NON-HLOS.bin and flashed it. To my great surprise, it improved all my reception quite a lot! more bars where I NEVER saw that many, and no dropped calls since the flashing of it.
Have not tested speed in detail, but rough test showed more speed overall....

I wasn't sure if the modem was GSM only or LTE included.
have you noticed a bump in speeds? I noticed 1-2 more bars in LTE and 3G, but speeds don't seem/feel faster. People in the NB4 thread report faster speeds.

so even if im on a MDB baseband and ive flashed MDL roms but my baseband still says MDB afterwards.. it updated me to MDL? Because ive noticed that after flashing serval MDL roms my baseband does not change. That sounds kinda fishy to me that it wouldnt say MDL. i was thinking that i needed to flash to MDL to insure it will work properly with MDL roms. i was about to odin a MDL root injected rom once i found one to fix this issue but now im skeptical since i think im aready on MDL. Your modem is your baseband? Can i just flash a MDL modem and it will show MDL afterwards not MDB in the about phone. How come it doesn't change when i flash a MDL rom. i rooted and flashed on the a stock MDB baseband and its read the same a dozen roms later. i also rolled back in odin my friends OTA updated MDL to MDB so i could use moto chopper to get root. it rolled back fine. I was able to get root with moto chopper but it still read MDL even afterwards. I was pretty sure it was on MBD even though it didnt say so.

Thanks for the link, but even after flashing the MDL modem in odin it still shows that im on UVUAMDB. is that right? shouldnt it show that im on UVUAMDL now? is it only a s4 problem? i heard on a youtube video that the baseband reads the same but DID update. i've flashed dozens of modems on my s1, s2 and s3 and i knew the modem changed because it say what modem im on. i just want to make sure im using the best modem for my area. i am having an issue with death star 4.0. i use to get a strong lte signal at my home now i barley get 4g and it goes on and off mostly off. lte does work if i drive down the street but most of the time i dont have internet connection at all then it pops up for a couple of minutes at like 4 bars then back to no connection figured it might have been a problem with the modem. other roms i used i havent had any issues with data yet. just test driving this rom because a buddy of mine wants it. i personally prefer aosp roms.

I did the same as you; got the phone with MDB and wasn't on the stock ROM for more than a day or so. It took a few flashes for my baseband to report as MDL once that was out.
I bought a used ATT I317 for use on T-mobile network. Just got everything set up, had to flash the J2 modem in order to work around the unlock. Without any further tinkering, it looks like I am getting access to the 4G network via notification (no indication of access to LTE) but getting highest speeds of about 10.25 Mbps down 2.5 up, and lower speeds of 3 Mbps down. I'm wondering if an updated ATT modem would remedy this problem or if I should get a T-mobile based ROM and flash the updated T889 modem to it?
Many of the posts I have come across are older and I believe before the tower integration. Not sure if it is necessary to go further in modem modification or do the AWS band work around. I have my phone rooted and plan to try out different ROMs, especially cyanogen and DittoNote 3, would it work better for me to access the T889 bands from variants of those, or other ROMs?

yeah first do the latest modem and then the aws mod.
because each time you flash any kind of modem you need to re do the mod
Ah okay thanks. So I should put the latest ATT modem on there and with the AWS mod it should take care of all of my 4G and LTE issues? Then on top of that I should be able to flash any ROM without issue?
Do you happen to have a link to the latest i317 modem?

is the UCUBMK6 the current i317 modem? and will the CWM file work on TWRP? (i317-cwm-ucubmk6-modem.zip, from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2589891). If its not current, I haven't been able to find whatever is the most up to date modem

yup this the latest and it should work with twrp
I'm currently running BlueLightning-20140410-jflte. I just tried updating to the new modem, so my Baseband is M919UVUFNB4 (from MK2).
My kernel is 3.4.82-ChronicKernel, and I have done some minor modifications to the ROM, mostly just removing bloatware.
Up until last week, I got incredible LTE speeds, from 30-50Mbps. Now, I am getting .5Mbps to 5Mbps, maximum. The average is around 3Mbps.
Called T-Mobile and they did troubleshooting. Confirmed that I am receiving the proper signal from the towers and everything.
Beyond changing my hosts file to block ads, I have made no real changes to this ROM, my kernel, or anything beyond updating my modem.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I don't want to have to switch phone carriers just because I am no longer getting the speed that I should. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My previous modem is when the problem started. That's why I updated it in the first place.
Flash NH7 modem or try a different ROM.. If those don't work, flash back to stock and see if speeds go back to normal
By any chance anyone have a NK2.zip to flash in recovery? Greatly appreciated
There's a .tar stock untouched in the generals forum of the spr note 4, I don't think anyone has pulled the stock recovery or bootloader and posted it on the forums as of yet and flashing the NK2 tar doesn't wipe your internal sdcard but everything else gets wiped.
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app

What are you looking to accomplish with the nk2.zip? just stock kernel? recovery? bootloader?
@ <Spark91> thanks a bunch, i did see that .tar file in General. @ <millerboy3>, i also didnt wanna take the chance in updating bootloader (firmware) and NOT be able to root right away. Besides, this may sound too strange but my co-worker has gotten really great signal strength after Official Sprint OTA Update as Ive been having dropped calls since ive had this phone (Sprint NOTE 4). Didn't have this problem with Note 3???....Don't get me wrong, the data speed is much much faster with Sprint's SPARK and im also loving the phone....Except for the dropped calls issues!
The NK2 tar will update everything and CF-AutoRoot ANIE ( people have said ) can root nk2, if you're looking for another way you can .tar flash twrp2 trltespr 2.8.3.0 and root via flashing SuperSU update ( latest STABLE ) as that has worked for me as well. Just make sure once you're done rooting you give SuperSU permission to freeze the Knox app and reboot once done.
The NK2 modem however, YMMV. I'm having the same speeds / signal and no difference in clarity when doing calls, and this is up in Minnesota.

There is no fix for the poor LTE speeds and reception. I have even went so far as to have Samsung reflash the phone and it still has poor radio performance. Your only option is to stick it out and pay it off or take your early upgrade option, pay $300 and upgrade to something else. This was Sprints and Samsung's final offer to me after 3 weeks of phone calls daily.
I was running a paranoid android for some time and wanted to go back to the original rom so I grabbed the latest telus 4.4.2 rom off of samsung updates and the phone works fine. The only thing I notice is that before I used to have the LTE icon in the status bar and now I only have the 4G icon. Since I never got the update officially from Telus over the air, can anyone currently running 4.4.2 on a galaxy s3 inform me if they have the LTE or the 4G icon?

It's only an image, it doesn't change anything. That being said, you can test your network speed see if anything changed.

Well according to Telus:
about.telus.com/community/english/about_us/technology_%26_innovation/telus_networks/national_wireless_network
4G is maximum 21Mbps and LTE is maximum theoretical 150Mbps and acordding to the speedtest app I get 46.97 Mbps download and 7.83 Mbps upload so that means on my LTE?

Chances are that you're on LTE. Do you know if your modem changed? Cause if it didn't, you're getting the same thing you were before stock.
Also, like I mentioned, they're images, they are easily swapped/changed. Different ROMs will use different images
You can Go to settings>about phone>status. And it should tell you what network type your on, either HSPA or LTE

I haven't flashed a modem but I did flash the stock rom using ODIN, is a modem included in that package usually? Also I think this rom came with root which would mean it's not 100% stock, is there a place I can get the original telus rom?

Root was simply pushed to the stock ROM (might've been unbloated too) but if you want unrooted, get it directly from Kies or a Odin flashable version from Sammobile.com . You might have to unroot before though (using SuperSU or whichever root app you have) if you wanna do it through Kies.
As for the modem, if you flashed stock, then yes it flashed a modem. That being said, it might be the one you had on custom as well cause most custom ROMs don't change it. That being said, you can look which one (if any) was packaged with the ROM you were using and compare with the one you currently have on your phone.
